Book Description

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is an important design tool in engineering and also a substantial research tool in various physical sciences as well as in biology.

The objective of this book is to provide university students with a solid foundation for understanding the numerical methods employed in todays CFD and to familiarise them with modern CFD codes by hands-on experience. It is also intended for engineers and scientists starting to work in the field of CFD or for those who apply CFD codes. Due to the detailed index, the text can serve as a reference handbook too.
Each chapter includes an extensive bibliography, which provides an excellent basis for further studies.

The accompanying CD-ROM contains the sources of 1-D and 2-D Euler and Navier-Stokes flow solvers (structured and unstructured) as well as of grid generators. Provided are also tools for Von Neumann stability analysis of 1-D model equations. Finally, the CD-ROM includes the source code of a dedicated visualisation software with graphical user interface.

3 out of 5 stars cod is not very useful if you run windows.......2007-07-31

The book falls short of explaining application in a numeric fashion. For this you have to consult the CD which does not owe itself to much use if you don't have a UNIX system or the hacks for windows to emulate. After four or so hours of searching hateful FTP site for what I needed I gave up and shelved the book, explains why there is an abundance of used ones. Oh, and there is no web site, support, or any place to send an email to get help, so forget that. The similar computation is explained in a short order in "Centrifugal Compressors: a basic guide" if you don't want to spend 175 bucks.

5 out of 5 stars A superb post-graduate CFD book .......2005-03-23

Blazek has done a really great job of providing a well rounded reference text of the current state of finite volume related CFD algorithms and techniques. He treats almost all solution related aspects, ranging from discretization to solution acceleration. The mathematics underlying each is given in a clear and consistent manner, and is accompanied by useful commentary (for those new to an area) as well as quite an extensive reference list for those required additional information. This is truly a superb buy for students, lecturers and those researching CFD!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent reference book.......2002-04-10

I find this book to be excellent. I would not use it as an introductory book because I think Versteeg and Malalasekera is better suited for that. However, having said that, I think this book brings the entire topic into perspective quite nicely. As far as organization and topics, there is no other book on FCVM that includes so much in such a nice way. The reference section in the back of each chapter is incredible. Here is my suggestion, buy Versteeg and Malalasekera to start out, then get this book to get an overall perspective of the subject. It's possible that you may still find this book difficult to read. In that case, try reading some chapters out of Tannehill et al before you make the complete jump.

5 out of 5 stars I like this book.......2002-03-26

The book gives a very good and detailed overview of current finite-volume CFD methods. I like very much the chapters about the different discretization schemes. Principles of cell-vertex, centred schemes and various control volumes, structured, unstructured are explained very clearly. From my point of view the book brings me to write a CFD code to understand numerical principles much better.

Book Description

This is a textbook for advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate students in mechanical, aerospace, and chemical engineering. The book emphasizes understanding CFD through physical principles and examples. The author follows a consistent philosophy of control volume formulation of the fundamental laws of fluid motion and energy transfer, and introduces a novel notion of 'smoothing pressure correction' for solution of flow equations on collocated grids within the framework of the well-known SIMPLE algorithm. The subject matter is developed by considering pure conduction/diffusion, convective transport in 2-dimensional boundary layers and in fully elliptic flow situations and phase-change problems in succession. The book includes chapters on discretization of equations for transport of mass, momentum and energy on Cartesian, structured curvilinear and unstructured meshes, solution of discretised equations, numerical grid generation and convergence enhancement. Practicing engineers will find this particularly useful for reference and for continuing education.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic introductory treatment of CFD.......2007-04-27

This book is a must-read for any practicing engineer who needs to come up to speed on the basic techniques of CFD quickly. It provides enough information for one to start writing code to model operating equipment with confidence. A second excellent book on this topic is referred to by Date as well: "Numerical Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow" by Patankar.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for both students and practitioners.......2005-10-18

During my final year project in CFD at IIT, I went through a number of books on Introduction to the topic. Among all of them, I think this is the best book from the point of view of students. This is an exceptional book for an introductory course in CFD. This book helps a student make the transition from analytical solutions to numerical methods easier. A lot of books on the subject tend to lose the physics part and divert to numerical analysis totally. To familiarize the reader with grid generation, both structured and unstructured grids have been covered in detail. Sufficient example code has also been provided in the appendix.

Hardbound. These volumes contain the proceedings of CMWR2002, which was hosted by the Faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences at Delft University of Technology. The interest in this meeting was truly overwhelming: around 230 papers from leading scientists were submitted and accepted for publication in the proceedings. The actual scope of the meeting was much broader than the title "Computational Methods in Water Resources" might suggest. Not only traditional hydrological topics like surface water and groundwater hydrology were covered, but also modern topics like coupled reactive transport, multiphase flow, pore-scale network modeling, remediation techniques, optimization, groundwater-surface water interactions and data assimilation. A quick glance through the Table of Contents of these two volumes immediately shows the richness of the material presented during the four days of the conference. New conceptual models, experimental methods, upscaling

5 out of 5 stars The basic of CFD.......2007-08-14

I found the basic knowledge for understanding the computational fluid dynamics. If you have "computational fluid dynamics, Hypersonic and high temperature of gas dynamic" and a software for solve linear system and EDO( like Mathenatica), you could make computational fluid dynamic. Also clarify "Time-dependent approach to the steady state","classification of quasi-linear partial differential equations","Implicit and Explicit methods","Boundary-fitted coordinate","Time and space marching".

      5 out of 5 stars Simply Fantastic.......2007-02-04

I am presently in my 4th year of a PhD in Astrophysics. While my background in the analytic portion of Fluid Dynamics is strong my understanding of how one discretizes and solves these equations numerically is somewhat lacking.

I picked this book up as a starting point to more complicated methods and found it to be, hands down, one of the best texts I have ever read. It presents the material in a concise, clear, and physically motivated fashion which makes learning the topic incredibly straightforward.

While this book is only a 'kicking off' point for more advanced techniques I think it is a must read for beginners and intermediate users. For the first timer to CFD the book will get you started down the right path armed with all the preliminary tools. For the more advanced user it will put aspects of the topic into an easier to understand light and perhaps shed more light on fundamentals that were presented poorly elsewhere.

I'd give it ten stars, it's allowed me to crack into the code I'm using and really understand why it works as well as having set me down the path to a more advanced level of understanding of CFD.

5 out of 5 stars Computational Fluid Dynamics.......2006-08-28

This is a very easy book to read. Anderson not only explains the computational methods, he covers the basics and explains the relevance of the equations and terms. This book addresses the needs for people with little background on this subject. I recommend it for any novice interested in obtaining a basic introduction to CFD.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to CFD!!.......2006-07-17

This is one of the best books I have read on CFD. Dr. Anderson divided the book into 3 sections: Basic Equations, Numerical Concepts, and Do-It-Yourself examples. Each section is very detailed and easy to follow. The only thing that could improve this great book is to include a CD with the examples. I recommand this book for all CFD beginners!

      5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2004-09-16

If you want to learn CFD from the beginning, you must buy this book. It is simply the BEST, and I hadn't enjoyed reading a technical book since long time ago.

            Book Description

Large eddy simulation (LES) seeks to simulate the large structures of a turbulent flow. This is the first monograph which considers LES from a mathematical point of view. It concentrates on LES models for which mathematical and numerical analysis is already available and on related LES models. Most of the available analysis is given in detail, the implementation of the LES models into a finite element code is described, the efficient solution of the discrete systems is discussed and numerical studies with the considered LES models are presented.

            Book Description

The book is the only one of its kind devoted entirely to the subject of Large Eddy Simulation. It presents a comprehensive account and a unified view of this young but very rich discipline. LES is the only efficient technique for approaching high Reynolds numbers when simulating industrial, natural or experimental configurations. The author concentrates on incompressible fluids. The topics are well chosen and both the mathematical ideas and the applications are presented with care. The book addresses researchers as well as graduate students and engineers. This second edition is a greatly enriched version motivated both by the increasing theoretical interest in LES and the increasing number of applications. Two entirely new chapters are devoted to the coupling of LES with multiresolution multidomain techniques and to the new hybrid approaches that relate the LES procedures to the classical statistical methods based on the Reynolds Averaged Navier--Stokes equations.

            4 out of 5 stars Good Book!!.......2007-07-12

Great Job, this book is good, but is very tiring. Because the subject is extensive.
            Thank you!!

5 out of 5 stars An atlas of large-eddy simulation.......2006-06-02

This book presents the current status of Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) and is invaluable for anyone working on the field.

The author presents all relevant subgrid scale models, the theoretical basis of the method, lessons from practical cases, etc

It is no accident that this is the 3rd revision in 4 years, collecting forewords from leading theoreticians along the way: Germano, Lesieur and Meneveau.
