Book Description
First introduced in 2001, Kersting's Distribution System Modeling and Analysis is the only textbook on computational modeling for electric power distribution systems. Computer models are only as good as their input, and this intuitive work clearly explains the principles and mathematics behind these models and provides approximation methods that help students recognize when a result is not what it should be. Using the same authoritative yet accessible approach, this second edition was updated to reflect the changes and advances in the field since the first edition appeared. Nearly every chapter of this book has been updated according to new trends and areas of interest, new technologies, and the increasing spread of distributed generation. Most notably, this edition features a new chapter on the center-tapped transformer for providing three-wire service to single-phase customers. New discussions consider the effects of mutual coupling between overhead and underground lines running parallel for long distances, expand on the discussion of induction machines to consider the rotor circuit, and examine the effects of distributed generation technologies such as windmills on feeders. Illustrated with numerous figures, examples, and exercises, Distribution System Modeling and Analysis, Second Edition remains the definitive textbook for teaching students to understand and model all aspects of modern distribution systems.

Great examples but careful, many errors........2006-03-19
This book is loaded with great examples and the problems at the end of chapters are based on these examples. There are multiple errors in this book though. Small errors. Chapter two has about 4 or 5 errors in it. I am up to chapter 6 right now and I think that every chapter so far has at least 1 error in it.

Product Description
There is no other information retrieval/search book where the heart is the mathematical foundations. This book is greatly needed to further establish information retrieval as a serious academic, as well as practical and industrial, area." ---Jaime Carbonell, Carnegie Mellon University. Berry and Browne describe most of what you need to know to design your own search engine. Their strength is the description of the solid mathematical underpinnings at a level that is understandable to competent engineering undergraduates, perhaps with a bit of instructor guidance. They discuss the algorithms used by most commercial search engines, so you may find your use of Google and its kind becomes more effective, too. --George Corliss, Marquette University. This book gives a valuable, generally non-technical, insight into how search engines work, how to improve the users' success in Information Retrieval (IR), and an in-depth analysis of a mathematical algorithm for improving a search engine's performance.
Written in an informal style, the book is easy to read and is a good introduction on how search engines operate
Christopher Dean, Mathematics Today, October 1999. The second edition of Understanding Search Engines: Mathematical Modeling and Text Retrieval follows the basic premise of the first edition by discussing many of the key design issues for building search engines and emphasizing the important role that applied mathematics can play in improving information retrieval. The authors discuss important data structures, algorithms, and software as well as user-centered issues such as interfaces, manual indexing, and document preparation. Readers will find that the second edition includes significant changes that bring the text up to date on current information retrieval methods. For example, the authors have added a completely new chapter on link-structure algorithms used in search engines such as Google, and the chapter on user interface has been rewritten to specifically focus on search engine usability. To reflect updates in the literature on information retrieval, the authors have added new recommendations for further reading and expanded the bibliography. In addition, the index has been updated and streamlined to make it more reader friendly. Instructors will find that the book serves as an excellent companion text for courses in information retrieval, applied linear algebra, and scientific computing. Because of the authors informal, conversational tone, readers with nonmathematical backgrounds also will appreciate the less technical chapters of the text.
Customer Reviews:
Good Introduction.......2007-05-07
There are better books in the market, and even the author would be the first to recognize it. However, this book is one of the most clear and readable introduction to the subject that you can find.
The author fully acomplishes the objective: teach his reader, at undergratuate level, how search engines work. Even some difficult subject, such as LSI, are treated at a level one can easilly understand.
One of the most important characteristics of the book is that it does math. Every formula has an example, usually using small matrix that allow the reader to easilly follow them.
The book is suitable for an objective introduction to the field. It is not very "academic", in the sense it is rather informal. If it is not a textbook, it could help some bewildered student to grasp the inner workings. It could also help a teacher to find clearer ways for explanations and good examples for classroom.
Read at the bookstore, no need to buy.......2002-05-19
This little booklet is best to be read at the bookstore.
There is no need to buy. In fact, buying it is a waste
of money, given the $[money] price tag. That is about a $[money]
a page.
So, save your money and time...
Appreciations from a novice........2000-06-29
I read this book because I am starting academic research on search engines. It was one of my first books on the subject. It actually deals with two aspects: (1) relevant issues in search engine design, and (2) a mathematically sound approach in building and querying large index strucutres. The explanation in the book on both aspects is short but to the point and explained in an understandable way. It also contains a short list + description of some key references. Great !

Book Description
This completely updated and revised Second Edition of the popular Workbook of Atmospheric Dispersion Estimates provides an important foundation for understanding dispersion modeling as it is being practiced today. The book and accompanying diskette will help you determine the impacts of various sources of air pollution, including the effects of wind and turbulence, plume rise, and Gaussian dispersion and its limitations. Information is shown in summary graphs as well as in equations. The programs included on the diskette allow you to "get the feel" for the results you'll obtain through the input of various combinations of parameter values. The sensitivity of data to various parameters can be easily explored by changing one value and seeing the effect on the results. The book presents 37 example problems with solutions to show the estimation of atmospheric pollutant concentrations for many situations.

Something every technical profeesional should have.......2003-12-05
An incredibly easy book to read. I found I could go from section to section and extract the knowledge that needed at that time. Sometimes I just pick it up and open it at random and I often get something new out of it. After being exposed to this book you can see how dimensional analysis is something that most of us should be capable of applying to those problems that lend themselves to no other approach. The only reason I gave it 4 and not 5 was because I would have liked to see more financial examples and I don't think amperes should be considered a fundamental unit. One of the best technical books I have bought.

Applied Dynamics of Ocean Surface Waves (Advanced Series on Ocean Engineering, V. 1)
ASIN: 0849323118 |
Book Description
Major advances in modeling methods and the computing power required to make them viable have led to major breakthroughs in our ability to model water waves. Problems that were once intractable--such as modeling the 1958 Lituya Bay event--have now been solved. The time has come to incorporate into one resource the modern techniques and tools of water wave modeling--and who better to develop this resource than the man responsible for many of the field's most significant advances, Charles L. Mader. Numerical Modeling of Water Waves, Second Edition covers all aspects of the subject, from the basic fluid dynamics and the simplest models to the latest and most complex, including the first-ever description of using compressible Navier-Stokes techniques to model wave generation by explosions, projectile impacts, asteroids, and impact landslides. Tsunamis receive particular attention among the many examples presented, but the author also explores applications to underwater barriers and waves from cavities. The book comes packaged with a CD-ROM that contains the computer codes and movies generated by the author and his colleagues at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Mader's three-pronged approach--through text, computer programs, and animations--imparts a thorough understanding of the new computational methods now at our disposal and provides the tools to put those methods to effective use.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding work of scholarship and a valuable reference .......2004-08-22
The second edition of the book entitled Numerical Modeling of Water Waves is a well-written, comprehensive treatise of the evolving science of computer modeling of waves. In a very skillful and methodical manner, the Dr. Charles Mader provides new insights on the subject and updates the reader with what is being done with state-of-the-art, high-performance computers which allow for the adaptation of new codes that can result in even more accurate simulations of waves generated from a variety of source mechanisms - whether generated by earthquakes, landslides, explosions, or the impact of asteroids. The book is an outstanding work of scholarship and a valuable reference for any researcher involved or interested in the numerical modeling of waves.

Book Description
Thoroughly revised and updated, The Art of Modeling in Science and Engineering with Mathematica®, Second Edition explores the mathematical tools and procedures used in modeling based on the laws of conservation of mass, energy, momentum, and electrical charge. The authors have culled and consolidated the best from the first edition and expanded the range of applied examples to reach a wider audience. The text proceeds, in measured steps, from simple models of real-world problems at the algebraic and ordinary differential equations (ODE) levels to more sophisticated models requiring partial differential equations. The traditional solution methods are supplemented with Mathematica , which is used throughout the text to arrive at solutions for many of the problems presented. The text is enlivened with a host of illustrations and practice problems drawn from classical and contemporary sources. They range from Thomson's famous experiment to determine e/m and Euler's model for the buckling of a strut to an analysis of the propagation of emissions and the performance of wind turbines. The mathematical tools required are first explained in separate chapters and then carried along throughout the text to solve and analyze the models. Commentaries at the end of each illustration draw attention to the pitfalls to be avoided and, perhaps most important, alert the reader to unexpected results that defy conventional wisdom. These features and more make the book the perfect tool for resolving three common difficulties: the proper choice of model, the absence of precise solutions, and the need to make suitable simplifying assumptions and approximations. The book covers a wide range of physical processes and phenomena drawn from various disciplines and clearly illuminates the link between the physical system being modeled and the mathematical expression that results.

Book Description
Computer simulation proves to be a valuable tool for the analysis and prediction of compartment fires. With the proper understanding and software, fire safety professionals can use modeling tools and methods to find answers to many critical questions relating to the prevention, investigation, and reconstruction of compartment fires. Thoroughly updated and revised, An Introduction to Mathematical Fire Modeling, Second Edition introduces the concepts, software, and techniques of computer-aided mathematical modeling and the software for the analysis and prediction of a variety of compartment fires. Beginning with basic compartment fire theory, the author develops a simple mathematical model that provides an engineering approximation of the time-varying conditions created by fires in an enclosure that may be subject to hot-layer vents. This is the first book focused on the deterministic computer modeling of compartment fires, and the FIRM model presented is the first fire model to be documented, validated, verified, and evaluated according to ASTM guidelines. The text includes detailed information on the use of the QBASIC software provided on an enclosed CD-ROM.
