Book Description
Gas turbines play an important role in power generation and aeroengines. An extended survey of methods associated with the control and systems identification in these engines,
Dynamic Modelling of Gas Turbines reviews current methods and presents a number of new perspectives.
• Describes a total modelling and identification program for various classes of aeroengine, allowing you to deal with the engine’s behaviour over its complete life cycle.
• Shows how the above regime can be applied to a real engine balancing the theory with practical use.
• Follows a comparative approach to the study of existing and newly derived techniques thus offering an informed choice of controllers and models from the tried-and trusted to the most up-to-date evolutionary optimisation models.
• Presents entirely novel work in modelling, optimal control and systems identification to help you get the most from your engine designs.
Dynamic Modelling of Gas Turbines represents the latest research of three groups of internationally recognised experts in gas turbine studies. It will be of interest to academics working in aeroengine control and to industrial practitioners in companies concerned with their design. The work presented here is easily extendible to be relevant in other areas in which gas turbines play a role such as power engineering.

Pulse Width Modulation for Power Converters: Principles and Practice (IEEE Press Series on Power Engineering)
ASIN: 0470845287 |
Book Description
Photovoltaics, the direct conversion of light from the sun into electricity, is an increasingly important means of distributed power generation. The SPICE modelling tool is typically used in the development of electrical and electronic circuits. When applied to the modelling of PV systems it provides a means of understanding and evaluating the performance of solar cells and systems.
The majority of books currently on the market are based around discussion of the solar cell as semiconductor devices rather than as a system to be modelled and applied to real-world problems. Castaner and Silvestre provide a comprehensive treatment of PV system technology analysis. Using SPICE, the tool of choice for circuits and electronics designers, this book highlights the increasing importance of modelling techniques in the quantitative analysis of PV systems. This unique treatment presents both students and professional engineers, with the means to understand, evaluate and develop their own PV modules and systems.
- Provides a unique, self-contained, guide to the modelling and design of PV systems
- Presents a practical, application oriented approach to PV technology, something that is missing from the current literature
- Uses the widely known SPICE circuit-modelling tool to analyse and simulate the performance of PV modules for the first time
- Written by respected and well-known academics in the field

Book Description
Battery Management Systems - Design by Modelling describes the design of Battery Management Systems (BMS) with the aid of simulation methods. The basic tasks of BMS are to ensure optimum use of the energy stored in the battery (pack) that powers a portable device and to prevent damage inflicted on the battery (pack). This becomes increasingly important due to the larger power consumption associated with added features to portable devices on the one hand and the demand for longer run times on the other hand. In addition to explaining the general principles of BMS tasks such as charging algorithms and State-of-Charge (SoC) indication methods, the book also covers real-life examples of BMS functionality of practical portable devices such as shavers and cellular phones.
Simulations offer the advantage over measurements that less time is needed to gain knowledge of a battery's behaviour in interaction with other parts in a portable device under a wide variety of conditions. This knowledge can be used to improve the design of a BMS, even before a prototype of the portable device has been built. The battery is the central part of a BMS and good simulation models that can be used to improve the BMS design were previously unavailable. Therefore, a large part of the book is devoted to the construction of simulation models for rechargeable batteries. With the aid of several illustrations it is shown that design improvements can indeed be realized with the presented battery models. Examples include an improved charging algorithm that was elaborated in simulations and verified in practice and a new SoC indication system that was developed showing promising results.
The contents of
Battery Management Systems - Design by Modelling is based on years of research performed at the Philips Research Laboratories. The combination of basic and detailed descriptions of battery behaviour both in chemical and electrical terms makes this book truly multidisciplinary. It can therefore be read both by people with an (electro)chemical and an electrical engineering background.
Customer Reviews:
Great reference for anyone who designs systems using secondary batteries..........2007-07-05
This book provides a great overview of battery chemistries, charging algorithms. and modeling techniques. If you are an engineer designing battery operated equipment or chargers, this is s great reference. It is starting to become a bit dated, due to the rapid advancement in battery technolgy and charging techniques, but it is still valuable.

Book Description
The main contribution of
Power Estimation and Optimization Methodologies for VLIW-based Embedded Systems consists of the introduction of innovative power estimation and optimization methodologies to support the design of low power embedded systems based on high-performance Very Long Instruction Word (VLIW) microprocessors. A VLIW processor is a (generally) pipelined processor that can execute, in each clock cycle, a set of explicitly parallel operations; this set of operations is statically scheduled to form a Very Long Instruction Word.
The proposed estimation techniques are integrated into a set of tools operating at the instruction level and they are characterized by efficiency and accuracy. The aim is the definition of an overall power estimation framework, from a system-level perspective, where novel power optimization techniques can be evaluated.
The proposed power optimization techniques are addressed to the micro-architectural as well as the system level. Two main optimization techniques have been proposed: the definition of register file write inhibition schemes that exploit the forwarding paths, and the definition of a design exploration framework for an efficient fine-tuning of the configurable modules of an embedded system.

The Nuclear Imperative: A Critical Look at the Approaching Energy Crisis (Topics in Safety, Risk, Reliability and Quality)
ASIN: 0387289135 |
Book Description
Part I highlights the emerging role of power electronic apparatus in power transmission and distribution networks. It also discusses topics in modeling and simulation as pertaining to the utilization of power electronics in large power networks.
Part II presents different power electronic converter assemblies for power transmission and power quality enhancement. These are presented in conjunction with suitable models which the readers using the book for self-study need to conduct parametric analyses or as a starting point for future research.
The aim of the book is to provide a new approach to power-electronic systems, where modeling becomes an essential part of the study process. The book therefore could be used in a graduate-level course that discusses power electronic components in transmission and distribution. It will also be a valuable resource to the practicing engineers and researchers who want to develop models for emerging circuits.
