Lacking in going from abstract to application.......2007-09-23
This review is for the 11th edition of the book. I am using this for a business math course and overall the book is lacking. Many of the examples presented in the chapters are simplistic and have no relation to the difficulty of the application examples. It's unfortunate that the solutions manual while containing the solutions to the examples does not go into more detail in how to solve these type of problems. While it appears the authors goal is to go from abstract to application, he misses the mark. I find myself consulting external resources for almost every chapter. Not recommended.
Finite Mathematics for Business Economics, Life Sciences and Social Sciences (10th Edition).......2005-09-17
They sent me the wrong book. I ordered the Finite Mathematics for Business Economics, Life Sciences and Social Sciences (10th Edition)by Raymond A. Barnett and received the solution manual. I feel very disapointed with this purchase.
NOT USER FRIENDLY!.......2005-09-08
I am using this textbook for my Math for Business and Economics class and it is terrible. This book is not written taking into consideration the audience "Business Majors". Concepts are better explained in the Chapter review than under the sections they are being presented. There is only 1 example for each new concept and definitions are written using one or two definitions of new concepts within it. If this book is intended to take the student from the abstract concept to the real world it sure doesn't do this. I understood the material better in my Intermediate Algebra class than I do now.
Sound choice for a finite math textbook.......2004-06-27
This is a very sound choice as a textbook for a course in finite mathematics. The coverage is appropriate, the level suitable for the non-math major, the explanations are excellent and the authors take the title seriously.
The topics are covered in the following order:
* Elementary functions and their graphs.
* The mathematics of finance.
* Matrices and systems of linear equations.
* Linear inequalities and linear programming.
* Logic, set theory and basic counting.
* Probability and probability distributions.
* Basic game and decision theory.
* Markov chains.
There are many exercises and at the end of each section there is a set of basic exercises followed by a collection of applied problems. The set of applied problems is split into three categories: business & economics, life sciences and social sciences. Since finite mathematics is often a preparation for students to work in these fields, this format is what impressed me the most. With all of these "real world" problems to work as part of their study, no student using this book could ever legitimately say that they see no purpose to their studies. Solutions to the odd-numbered problems are included.
I came into contact with this book after my choice of textbook was irrevocable. Had I seen it earlier, it would have been the one I used.

Book Description
This book offers an outstanding algebra review, detailed coverage of finite mathematics and sound treatment of both differential and integral calculus. This edition offers thorough coverage of the graphing calculator and computer through optional exercises and supplements. The largest, most varied selection of applications available will convince even the most skeptical reader that mathematics is useful. There are over 300 worked examples included, presented in example-solution-matched problem format to encourage active learning. The book includes over 3,800 carefully selected and accurate problems divided into A, B, and C level of difficulty. Carefully selected and organized topics are structured to provide maximum flexibility in selection of material, with a Chapter Dependency Chart included in the Preface. Added optional graphics calculator and computer exercises give the reader excellent hands-on practice. Revised topical coverage includes the review of basic set theory, expanded coverage of counting techniques now including sets and Venn diagrams is presented in two sections as opposed to one, rewritten and expanded section on factoring polynomials now includes applications of the quadratic formula to factoring second-degree polynomials, and material on inverse matrices and systems of equations is now presented in two sections.
Customer Reviews:
I thought it was pretty good actually.......2001-10-20
I also had this book for two math classes and found it to be pretty good, probably one of the better text books I've had. It explained things better than my teachers did! In all fairness, I knew all the math before the calculus part so I only really read the book in an in-depth manner the last 3 or 4 chapters. Anyway, just a different opinion.
Is this book talking about math? Did I miss something?.......2001-06-21
I am a college student and had the unfortunete experience to have to use this utterly useless textbook for two different courses--a finite math and a calculus course. The text is very technical and wordy, with terrible examples not explaining steps but rather using the authors 'ego-boosting' terms such as 'obvioulsy', 'of course' and 'simply' -- wrongly assuming that drawn out text taught the student something. Do not buy this book if you are looking to learn calc--there has got to be something better.

Book Description
This practical manual demonstrates how to arrive at equitable and successful arrangements over access to, and the commercial development of, genetic resources. Despite much discussion at the international policy level relating to the use of genetic resources and traditional knowledge, to date there has been no such guide on integrating concepts into practice. Many parties have stakes in the commercial use of biodiversity, from local communities and indigenous peoples to resource managers, NGOs, research institutes and universities, industry and national governments.
This guide draws on experience from a range of countries around the world to show how the benefits from the commercial use of biodiversity can be maximized and shared equitably while also achieving local conservation and development objectives. It explains how groups can better design and control the terms of research and business partnerships, and also how to participate in drafting national laws and contributing to international policy debate.
No single model fits all circumstances, and the manual is structured to enable readers to select and apply approaches most relevant to them. It includes extensive information on the codes, contracts, policies and other documents required, as well as extensive contact details. It will be an invaluable tool for all the stakeholders involved in benefit-sharing research and commercial partnerships.

Customer Reviews:
excellent book.......2004-09-26
I used the second edition of this book many years ago in college. Its easy to understand and does a good job of covering its intended subject matter.
A great textbook for end users of mathematics.......2000-04-27
This book is just very good. It is a top-quality, superbly on target solution for end users of mathematics. I had selected and subsequently used it as a textbook for a freshman calculus course aimed at prospective economics majors at an Ivy League college. My goal was to present a broad scope of the fundamental concepts of applied mathematics relevant to the social sciences, while keeping the exposition at the basic level of mathematical sophistication. Given the objective, one needs a textbook that would replace most proofs with carefully chosen exemplifications, rely on technically undemanding exercises, but enable the teacher to introduce concepts at a lively pace and tie them to interesting applications. This textbook meets all the requirements.
Our course used essentially only the more advanced parts of the book. The selection of topics was systematized by the idea of staying focused on some of the basic mathematical methods designed for solving broadly understood problems of optimization, extrapolation, and prediction. Formally, students were required to learn algorithmic skills, like finding extrema of functions of one and several variables, linear programming, basic routines for ordinary differential equations and Markov chains. Primary emphasis was put on understanding the differences and similarities between continuous and discrete, deterministic and random. The book served us well and we felt truly rewarded by its amazing collection of well selected, well thought-through real-life applications. I am enthusiastic about this book and so were very many of my students.

Applied calculus.......there is a method to the madness.......2000-05-08
I used this textbook in my first calculus class. The applied calculus class showed me some of the things this stuff can actually be used for. The authors and editors have combined excellent graphics, and outstanding homework problems. If you are a gluton for punishment from word problems, or if you need help at the most basic level of calculus, this is the book you'll need.
