4 out of 5 stars Publisher does not provide CDROM in latest printing.......2007-01-09

Recently purchased this book and from reading parts of it the book is a very good source of the mathematics associated with signal processing. However the publisher in the latest printing I just received no longer provides the promised CDROM and the listed website where to obtain the MATLAB material on the CDROM is also no longer supported by the publisher. An e-mail response to my inquiry about the missing MATLAB code source from a representative of the publisher indicates that the book is too old and their is no need to provide the material anymore.

3 out of 5 stars Target Audiance - Choose Wisely.......2006-08-03

This book is certainly technically sound. That being said, I find the notation confusing and the text relatively inacessible. The book is likely a good selection for someone wanting to study the innermost mathematical details of modern signal processing. Unfortunately, the text spends less time on actual implimentation and usage than would be preferable for audiances focussed on real world applications.

5 out of 5 stars excellent collection of signal processing math.......2006-01-05

this book is really good for a signal processing researcher.
generally it is difficult for a new researcher to connect math to the signal processing methods. conventional signal processing books only give the bit of math as needed in the signal processing books and this makes it difficult for an inexperienced student.
in this book mathematics is explained in more detail and in the introduction of each chapter it is mentioned why and where you would need this math knowledge.
at the end of each chapter application sections are provided
where problems from signal processing are explained for that particular mathematical method.

there are also exercises.

however, this book can be difficult for a new graduate without any establishment of signal processing concepts and problems.

it is an excellent book for a phd student in my view and it can be a classic.

Book Description

Providing an easy introduction to the boundary element method, this book is ideal for any reader wishing to work in this field or use this method for the solution of engineering problems. From the beginning, the emphasis is on the implementation of the method into computer programs which can be used to solve real problems. The book covers two-andthree-dimensional linear and non-linear analysis in potential flow (heat flow and seepage) and static elasticity. Several computer programs are listed in the book and may be downloaded free of charge via the Internet. They include programs and subroutines for:
* 2-D analysis of potential problems using the Trefftz method
* 2-D and 3-D linear analysis of potential and static elasticity problems using isoparametric elements (single and multiple regions)
* implementation of non-linear problems
* coupling to finite elements
The programs (written in FORTRAN 90) are well documented, and can be employed by the user to gain experience with the method through the solution of small test examples. Furthermore, readers may use them as a starting point for developing their own boundary element package. In addition, exercises are included in most chapters involving the use of the programs with answers given in an Appendix, and a number of interesting industrial applications in the areas of mechanical, civil and geotechnical engineering are presented.

5 out of 5 stars Good for student and practitioner.......2001-06-27

I am a grduate student. My specific research area is BEM. and I programmed my own c++ code.

If I could get this book earlier, I could have saved a lot of time. By reading this book, reader can find not only detailed information for coding but also clear understanding about BEM.

The impressive points to me are 1) working 2D/3D potential and stress solvable code-there is multi-region version too, excellent explaining about 2)Corner problem, 3)assembly procedure (especially for multi-region problem), 4) programming frieldly math notations, 5) good logical flow of chapters.

The only problem I found is few mistypings. But, it does not prevent me to understand the material.

For engineers in industry, I think they can use the code to solve engineering problem with some modification if they don't have expensive commercial FE package, or use the code to solve linear problems quickly, etc.

As a result, Prof. Beer achieved his goal of writing this book and I hope this book can help to expand the BEM users.

Almost completely the same as MatLab6 for Engineers no need to buy the new book if you have the previous edition. But does a good job of covering the scope of MatLab.

4 out of 5 stars brief discourses on various maths methods.......2006-10-03

Palm demonstrates the simple versatility of Matlab. Many examples are given that are likely to be encountered by an undergrad engineering student. Matrix methods might be the most useful, given the prevalence of linear systems that you often have to solve.

Matlab can also be used for symbolic algebra. Here the usage may be a bit more specialised. While this can be neat to use, chances are that most engineers will rarely have to use this ability, relative to number crunching.

The book only briefly covers Matlab's probability and statistics functions. It covers the bell curve [normal distribution]. But doesn't really go into anything advanced. Still, remember the book is only meant as an introduction.

4 out of 5 stars Really good book!.......2006-02-18

The content is very effectively edited and presented. The material covers all one needs to know in order to solve various problems and exploit several powerful features of MATLAB. Very good introductory text.

It's one of the text-book requirments I had for my computing class. It works, but... buy the used ones if possbile.

3 out of 5 stars Not very good for coding.......2005-10-20

Although this book has a lot of pertinent information to engineers, I bought it with the intent of learning the fundamentals of coding in MATLAB. I have a class in which our teacher assigns problems in MATLAB, but none of the students have experience in MATLAB. I bought the book to help me figure out how to write codes and it doesn't do that too well, but I could see how it might work well for someone familiar with MATLAB who needs to use it for an engineering problems.

5 out of 5 stars Great introductory text for engineers!.......2006-08-28

This work is one of my favorite all-around optimization books. It covers a lot of ground and it is very well written from a pedegogical point of view. Covered are a full range of linear and nonlinear methods, and for both constrained and unconstrained problem types. Also treated are geometric, dynamic, and integer programming techniques. Many of the algorithms within the book are presented with step-by-step examples which greatly assist the reader.

One downside is that I found the explanations of SQP and GRG methods to be confusing and insufficient. As these two techniques are among the more efficient and robust for many NLP problems (which are essential for engineering applications), this was disappointing. I hope Professor Rao will write a fourth edition with improvements in these particular areas. Otherwise, this book stands out as a useful and practical reference for both students and practicing engineers. If I had to have only one general book on optimization, this would be it. Other useful favorites are "Numerical Optimization" by Nocedal and Wright, "Practical Methods of Optimization" by Fletcher, and "Numerical Methods for Unconstrained Optimization and Nonlinear Equations" by Dennis and Schnabel.

4 out of 5 stars An update to the review above.......2000-09-16

Since writing the above review in 1999, I have become familiar with some of the more recent methods for linear optimization. If you are interested in linear/integer optimization, you may be interested to know that this book discusses the simplex method and its derivatives, and describes Gomory cutting plane method for integer programming. Lest you get carried away by the unbridled optimism expressed in the previous review , please note - this book does not cover iterative linear programming methods such as interior point methods, EXCEPT for a rather good, detailed description of Karmarkar's 1984 method (projective transformation), with a numerical example. Another omission is trust-region methods; however line-search methods are discussed. So if 0/1 optimization, interior point methods, semi-definite programming, trust-region methods is your cup of tea, shop elsewhere. I'm rolling back my previous rating from 5-stars to 4-stars on this count.

5 out of 5 stars A most valued addition to my bookshelf........1999-08-13

I am a sucker for books on applied mathematics. This book ranks among my most valued ones, and is always within constant reach for reference on optimization algorithms. The book covers linear programming, nonlinear programming, geometric programming, dynamic programming, integer programming, and stochastic programming. A wide array of methods which seem impressively complete are covered in this 903-page book. The addressing of the topics is geared more towards making the reader understand how the algorithms were derived (which is welcome, in contrast to chasing up the original research papers), and using them. Just about every method is illustrated clearly with examples - a welcome feature of the book. One minor drawback is that all examples and exercises that are applied to engineering, are drawn from mechanical and civil areas (note: there are also many examples that are mathematical toy problems). Having said that, I must hasten to add that I am an electrical engineer, and I have no problem at all in using this book. Strongly recommended for people who work with optimization algorithms!

    Book Description

Expanded to include a broader range of problems than the bestselling first edition, Finite Element Method Using MATLAB: Second Edition presents finite element approximation concepts, formulation, and programming in a format that effectively streamlines the learning process. It is written from a general engineering and mathematical perspective rather than that of a solid/structural mechanics basis. What's new in the Second Edition? Each chapter in the Second Edition now includes an overview that outlines the contents and purpose of each chapter. The authors have also added a new chapter of special topics in applications, including cracks, semi-infinite and infinite domains, buckling, and thermal stress. They discuss three different linearization techniques to solve nonlinear differential equations. Also included are new sections on shell formulations and MATLAB programs. These enhancements increase the book's already significant value both as a self-study text and a reference for practicing engineers and scientists.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very good finite element text.......2007-09-25

In this book, the authors expose many aspects of finite element analysis, in a mostly clear and straightforward manner. The in-depth coverage of topics is appreciated, since most books only give an overview of the subject without revealing the details.
Overall, this is an excellent, detailed presentation.
A note to some reviewers: before you comment on a textbook, spend some time - maybe a few years, studying and learning the subject, and maturing as an individual. Then make your comments.

1 out of 5 stars Difficult to understand.......2005-02-06

I took Prof Kwon's class and used this book. It was very difficult to understand. Bathe's book is much more clear.

2 out of 5 stars There has to be a better book to learn FE........2003-06-29

Professor Young Kwon teaches at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. I used this book in his class and found little difference when I compared it to the first edition. The first edition has some minor errors, but the problem sets for each chapter along with the Matlab programs provided are very much the same. The first chapter has some basic Matlab necessities and the second chapter covers weighted residual methods (strong / weak formulation, least squares, collocation, and Galerkin). There is a one paragraph summary of the Raleigh-Ritz method (derived from Calculus of Variations), which is more accurate but not as popular as Galerkin. I found a much better explanation of these weighted residual methods in an undergraduate numerical analysis book. The remainder of the book covered shape functions, isoparametric functions, numerical integration techniques, boundary and initial value problems, eigenvalue problems, beams, shell and plates, and trusses.

    Caution:
    - If you are planning to use this book as a reference or to educate yourself. STOP! This is a boring and merciless graduate-level book. At times we (study groups) would spend anywhere from half an hour to an hour trying to decipher the sample problems. Don't waste your time looking for the solutions manual; it is harder to follow than the sample problems.

    - If you want to learn the core of FE and can program easily, this book would help -- but it won't be easy.

    - If you want to learn FE for practical applications, spend your energy using a commercial or open-source FE package.

    More general comments:
    - If asked to describe this book, I would reply with "grueling".

    - The Matlab code is far from being easy to understand. Maybe it's easy to follow the logic, but there is very little documentation to support the code. You will spend A LOT of time figuring out the variables alone, which has a lot to do with how well you understand the code.

    - Someone with a non-engineer background would NOT be able to understand this book. Someone with a technical background and a strong math foundation may be able to. For example, this book contains a few topics from Theory of Elasticity. This theory is taught in advanced solid mechanics classes -- not even the undergraduate Mech-E's cover it. You should also have a good handle on matrix algebra, integral calculus, and basic ODE's.

    Bottom Line:
I did not like how this book presents the FE Method. If you really need it...good luck!

4 out of 5 stars understanding the finite element method.......2000-08-26

This book carries on from the first edition, lots of new theories and programs have been added. The errors in the last edition(1996) have been corrected. This book is a must for people who want to understand the finite element method and for people who want to learn how to program it using 'Matlab'. Matlab is one of the most widely used programming tool.

I have the old edition but i find this new edition refreshing. The new theories and programs help in digesting the book better.

overall this is an indispensable book for people trying to learn to program the finite element method because it gives a clear understanding of how a finite element code works.

    thanks,

This book is extremely useful, especially for those new to the finite element methods. Despite the fact that it puts a lot of emphasis on matlab, the code is easy to understand and translate into other powerful languages like fortran 90. It took me a few days to start writting my own FEM code after buying the book. I would strongly recommend it even for those with a non-engineering background.

      Book Description

The topology optimization method solves the basic engineering problem of distributing a limited amount of material in a design space. The first edition of this book has become the standard text on optimal design, which is concerned with the optimization of structural topology, shape and material. This edition has been substantially revised and updated to reflect progress made in modelling and computational procedures. It also encompasses a comprehensive and unified description of the state of the art of the so-called material distribution method, based on the use of mathematical programming and finite elements. Applications treated include not only structures but also MEMS and materials.

      Book Description

This is a simple, concise, and useful book, explaining MATLAB for freshmen in engineering. MATLAB is presently a globally available standard computational tool for engineers and scientists. The terminology, syntax, and the use of the programming language are well defined and the organization of the material makes it easy to locate information and navigate through the textbook. This new text emphasizes that students do not need to write loops to solve many problems. The MATLAB "find" command with its relational and logical operators can be used instead of loops in many cases. This was mentioned in Palm's previous MATLAB texts, but receives more emphasis in this MATLAB 6 edition, starting with Chapter 1, and re-emphasized in Chapter 4.

5 out of 5 stars Great introductory book on Matlab.......2003-07-17

This is a very good book for novice to learn Matlab. It is clear and concise and with some work-out engineering examples. For beginners to learn Matlab, this book is better than " An Engineer's Guide to Matlab" by Edward B. Magrab. But if you already know some basics of Matlab and want more details and advanced functions or egineering examples, " An Engineer's Guide to Matlab" is a better choice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to MATLAB.......2003-06-22

This is an excellent introductory book to MATLAB. The examples provided is a great motivation for engineers who tend to shun away from computer programming. During my freshmen year, computer programming was taught by the computer science dept. Their method of teachin is a roller coaster ride for many engineers which resulted many of us, including me to have a phobia in programming. However, Palm has explained the use of MATLAB and programming with clear examples and some interesting exercise to keep one hook onto the subject as well as realizing the importance of MATLAB and programming in engineering.

Therefore, this is a highly recommended book for those who intend to learn more about MATLAB which is an important software for engineers.

5 out of 5 stars My first book in Matlab.......2002-10-10

This books is very good as an introductory for Matlab users, espcially engineers.. It contains alot of enineering problems solved using Matlab. It is good for freshmen students and engineers. It can be studied as a first course in computer programming, rather than Fortran, C or Pascal. I am a lectureur in Electrical Engineering Department. I would recomend it to be studied using this text book.

          Book Description

Today's need-to-know optimization techniques, at your fingertips

The use of optimization methods is familiar territory to academicians and researchers. Yet, in today's world of deregulated electricity markets, it's just as important for electric power professionals to have a solid grasp of these increasingly relied upon techniques.

Making those techniques readily accessible is the hallmark of Optimization Principles: Practical Applications to the Operation and Markets of the Electric Power Industry.

With deregulation, market rules and economic principles dictate that commodities be priced at the marginal value of their production. As a result, it's necessary to work with ever-more-sophisticated algorithms using optimization techniques-either for the optimal dispatch of the system itself, or for pricing commodities and the settlement of markets. Succeeding in this new environment takes a good understanding of methods that involve linear and nonlinear optimization, including optimal power flow, locational marginal prices for energy, and the auction of hedging instruments.

In its comprehensive, skill-building overview of optimization techniques, Optimization Principles puts you on the same footing with algorithm-savvy software developers. Starting with a helpful look at matrix algebra fundamentals, this just-in-time reference covers:

As an aid to the uninitiated, appendices provide a brief description of basic principles of electricity, and the development of network equations.

Optimization Principles allows you to learn optimization methods at your own pace using Microsoft Excel or MATLAB software, and it includes an FTP web site with downloadable Excel spreadsheets and problems. After mastering these practical applications, you can then refer to chapters that highlight the theoretical background of the algorithms and resulting solutions. The book also includes a Web site with downloadable files of all example problems and solved problems.

Ideal for engineers, other electric power professionals, and advanced engineering students, Optimization Principles demystifies the electric power industry under deregulation-and delivers a complete, learn-as-you-go tutorial of optimization techniques that no other resource can match.
