Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for Engineers........2006-06-01

This book contains examples that pertain to many types of mechanical concepts. Most machines I have personally been involved with use instances explained in the book. As a referece guide alone it is fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars A terrific resource for mathematics teaching.......2000-03-30

I have used this book for the past 5 years in teacher seminars. It contains many many tips and suggestions for integration real world technology: heavy equipment, cars, bicycles, lawn chairs, steam engines, amusement park rides. The mathematics ranges from simple multiplication applied to gear ratios to complex geometry used in linkages. Model building in the math classroom is a fun way to try out the theory shown. There are also numerous excelent exercises.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Another Insightful Book by Mr. Louis.......2006-10-11

This is an outstanding book if you are planning to implement kanban. It breaks down the kanban system into 25 design options where you select kanban technique based upon your environment. The techniques selected work together in forming a kanban system that is designed for your plant. This is an exceptional book.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Application of Kanban.......2006-10-03

This book was exactly what I needed to improve productivity in my business. It was not a one size fits all kanban design process but rather guided the reader in the appraisal of their own unique environment. After reading this book, I realized that kanban in and of itself does not make a world class system but rather it is selecting the appropriate kanban techniques for the specific environment that creates a great system.

5 out of 5 stars Great for those in kanban management positions.......2006-10-01

This book is without question the most thorough and insightful work on designing a kanban system that I have read. The implementation aspects of this book are truly powerful as it not only explains the appropriate implementation steps but also demonstrates how to determine the anticipated inventory levels prior to implementing kanban. As someone who has personally managed a kanban replenishment system, this book is a must read.

      Book Description

Recent advances in science and technology have led to a rapid increasein the complexity of most engineered systems. In many notable cases, this change has been a qualitative one rather than merely one of magnitude.A new class of Complex Engineered Systems (CES) has emerged as a resultof technologies such as the Internet, GPS, wireless networking, micro-robotics, MEMS, fiber-optics and nanotechnology. These complex engineered systems are composed of many heterogeneous subsystems and are characterized by observable complex behaviors that emerge as a result of nonlinear spatio-temporal interactions among the subsystems at several levels of organization and abstraction. Examples of such systems include the World-Wide Web, air and ground traffic networks, distributed manufacturing environments, and globally distributed supply networks, as well as new paradigms such as self-organizing sensor networks, self-configuring robots, swarms of autonomous aircraft, smart materials and structures, and self-organizing computers. Understanding, designing, building and controlling such complex systems is going to be a central challenge for engineers in the coming decades.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars A great text.......2007-09-29

this is a great text for the undergraduate and graduate student as well as researcher in the colloids, polymers, and surface science field. It has the math that gives you the insight to apply to industrial or lab experiments and provides as a good reference for the experienced scientist/engineer. Excellent buy and worth every dollar.

      4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2000-08-04

Note: writing below review based on my perusing the first edition, which is not significantly different than the second, except for the aforementioned added chapter, IMO.

Particularly liked the "Concept Map" at the beginning of each chapter - this tells me what I can find in each chapter and gives me a good overview of where to find what (more than any Table of Contents can).

Could have done with a chapter on various analytical and experimental tools used to study colloids. This is done briefly in the chapter on bilayers but the spectrum of available tools in studying colloids, micelles, and other structures in this domain would serve the reader well and complete the book, so to speak. In any case, this is one of the books I'd like to buy soon.

        Book Description

The 18 th ESACT meeting was celebrated in Granada (Spain) in May 2003, and was entitled "Animal Cell Technology Meets Genomics", in order to reflect that the emerging technologies in the area of genomics, proteomics and other "-omics"-type disciplines will provide key technological assets to increase knowledge and open new horizons in animal cell technology. During the meeting a variety of top-class emerging technologies were presented together with the lastest advances in more mature industrial areas. The meeting was opened by a first session devoted to the understanding of basic cellular mechanisms, and four sessions focused on applied aspects of animal cell technology: Cell-based therapies and gene-based therapies, target discovery and biopharmaceuticals. The Granada Meeting has also seen a special focus on forefront industrial case studies. The spirit and scientific excellence of the 18 th ESACT meeting is now reflected in different chapters of the book. The book presents, in form of short papers, a high number of the contributions to the meeting, and has been prepared with the aim to provide a relevant reference of the current research efforts in Animal Cell Technology.

              Book Description

The Hubble Space Telescope is the largest, most complex, and most powerful observatory ever deployed in space, designed to allow astronomers to look far back into our own cosmic past with unprecedented clarity. Yet from its launch in 1990, when it was discovered that a flawed mirror was causing severe "myopia" and sending fuzzy images back to Earth, the HST has been at the center of a controversy over who was at fault for the flaw and how it should be fixed. Now Chaisson, a former senior scientist on the HST project, tells the inside story of the much heralded mission to fix the telescope. Drawing on his journals, Chaisson recreates the day-to-day struggles of scientists, politicians, and publicists to fix the telescope and control the political spin. Illustrated with "before and after" full-color pictures from the telescope and updated with a new preface, The Hubble Wars tells an engaging tale of scientific comedy and error.

In this new edition, coming at the half-way point in the HST's planned mission of fifteen years, Chaisson has brought the Hubble story up-to-date by sorting out the spectacular from the mundane contributions the HST has made to our knowledge of the Solar System, the Milky Way Galaxy, and the distant galaxies of deep space.

              Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good background read on HST.......2007-01-07

Frankly, I enjoyed the atsropolitics perspective of the Hubble Space Telescope [HST] but several people that were associated with the project I have spoken dispute elements of the book on a factual basis. Nonetheless, I see facts as being taken from where one stands especially in political science and the art of spin. For anyone doing an overview study of the Hubble Space Telescope, this book should be among those to be read for insight to the early development issues associated with a 'Big Science' project. The HST has, fortunately, been a significant instrument in astronomy the past decade or so. Hopefully the 2008 service mission will extend its life several more years leaving more to the HST story to be told with many more pictures and words to be written as to its astronomical observations.

              5 out of 5 stars 20-20 Vision.......2004-04-12

Chaisson has effectively been made a nonperson at NASA (one scientist tangentially involved in the Hubble program told me that he "believed" that Chaisson had been a "janitor or maintenance man"), which implies that he's on to something.

Reading this book will teach you something essential about organizational politics, something that is often revealed, but never corrected, and so must always be relearned. It will also make it clear why -- assorted automated go-carts to the contrary -- we're not going to Mars or anywhere else in the near future, at least not with this outfit.

              1 out of 5 stars A Great Novel.......2003-01-04

``Hubble Wars'' is a great exciting read, but unfortunately it has little to do with anything that really happened. Chaisson's tone reads like that of a classic self-serving political memior, ``I was there. I saw everything. It's a shame that the fools didn't listen to me, because I alone knew what to do.'' In truth, Chaisson gets the details completely wrong in many places, fails to understand what people were really doing to save the mission, and represents a privileged vantage point that he in fact did not have. I have yet to meet anyone who had anything to do with the Hubble who considers this book to be a fair or accurate history. Chaisson's tone is vividly clear in the summary chapter in which he judges the profoundly successful 1993 repair mission to having fallen far short. There is a great history of the Hubble to be written, but this is not it.

              5 out of 5 stars A great read!.......2000-02-18

An excellent book! It really shows what goes on down in the bowels of another government agency. Really well done. It's really amazing how the press can be lead on by the PR machine and how the PR machine doesn't even know what it's doing in a field a s specific as astrophysics and astronomy. It's really a wonder how hubble even got off the ground, let alone, work. Now, it is finally giving us some really good science and will hopefully continue to do so until the end of its operational life.

5 out of 5 stars Great reading for anyone interested in astronomy.......1999-02-20

If you've ever wondered what went wrong, and more importantly, what went right with the Hubble Space Telescope, this is a book for you. The author describes many of his personal experiences and gives us folks on the outside a peek at how professional astronomers work. Also, he corrects some of the errors that were made by the newsmedia in the early days of the project
