Customer Reviews:
nice one, amazon.......2007-09-08
Amazon is just lame sometimes. I've been asked to write a review of this book. Review the NEC? Uh, ok. I'm an electrician, so I guess I really like the NEC. There you go, Amazon.
NEC 2005 Softcover version.......2007-08-31
The Softcover version of the National Electrical Code 2005 is a must have reference for all Journeyman and Master Electricians. It is an essential tool for any students who are studying for a State License Exam.
How do you rate a code book?.......2007-08-31
The picture of the book I ordered looks exactly like the one that I received. Amazing! It actually has the NEC codes on the inside of the book which is exactly the reason I bought it. It is a really pretty book with lots of information.
I wish I had bought this years ago..........2007-08-09
I'm not an electrician so the price of the NEC delayed my buying a copy for too many years. I hunted for answers in forums and other web sources. (For advanced home improvers, Rex Cauldwell's excellent Wiring a House (For Pros by Pros) is a wonderful resource.)
I bought the spiral-bound edition 2005 National Electrical Code Spiralbound & Turbo Tab Set.
The 2005 NEC is as readable as and better than some codes. I recommend some highlighters and the 2005 NEC Tabs.
Millers Illustrated Guide to the NEC: Based on the 2005 National Electrical Code is a somewhat pricy but helpful companion. The coordinated descriptions and illustrations make the Code take on real-world meaning. There are almost no illustrations in the NEC.
Shipping fake.......2007-04-11
Just to let you know that i have ordered this book a month ago and I'm still haven't receive it !!! Of course they already charged my account. If you really need it just go over to the nearest Borders and buy it,Illustrated Guide to the NEC: Based on the 2005 National Electrical Code at least you will not have this headache waiting for something that may be in your house six months later !!!! I will never buy from this distributor again in my life. I have ordered things two weeks after this one and they are already with me !!!!!

Electric Code Book.......2007-06-11
This book is required in order to obtain an electrical contractor's license in the state of Georgia.
Very Good Reference Book for Electricians.......2007-06-09
This book is fine, it was a little bit expensive though.
this is the top of the line.......2007-03-19
this is everything i would ask for in a code book. it has details and is very comprehensive. this code book is great for keeping everything up to code.in reality sometimes compromises need to be make for pratical sake, electical inspectors i've dealt with understand that too. sure follow the book to perfectlly in a test exam but in real life something are not going to be happening.
Important Resource.......2007-02-19
Wanting to make internal wiring systems safer is the right thing to do. However, knowing how to meet that goal has never been more difficult. And with internal wiring systems more complex than ever, having a resource that provides correct answers about the NEC rules along with details in a simple explaination, is even more useful. That's exactly what the NEC 2005 Handbook does.
I have used this resource for years and can always count on it to provide answers in a clear and concise manner. The latest Handbook continues to improve with the increased use of illustrations and expanded discussions to help the reader know the NEC rule specifics... while helping in its understanding.
The Handbook is a "must have" reference if you are serious about doing all you can to meet the safety goals of the NEC Rules.
student use.......2007-01-04
This book is far better than the standard red code book. this has more useful information with the pics and tables that is more helpful. and the tabs are great makes finding the sections alot easier.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent, full of examples, easy to follow.......2006-09-20
This book is one of the best, most thorough and well explained textbooks I have encountered in the past 5 years of school. The authors, one of whom is teaching my course, present their explanations in a way that is both thorough and accessible. This is not a cookbook by any means - it is a very solid, detailed foundation for power electronics, and doesn't gloss over the important concepts like other books in the field. If you're just looking for a reference book with equations, circuits, and tables, this isn't for you. However, if you're looking for a text to study and understand in detail, you'll be right at home.
This book, when read and studied regularly, is very easy to follow and concepts are driven-home with solid examples. Very well done.

Lots of information with some open ended information.......2004-04-08
I would agree with the other reviewer that this is not a "how to" book. The book approaches the subject from an academic viewpoint. The reader is expected to fill in between the lines with previous experience. It appears that the authors, professors as U of C, supplement the text with worked out examples for their students. I would recomend it to people already versed in the subject and want more information.I found it for half price and this makes it worth buying as a reference.
Execellent Book.......2004-03-06
First off, this book is NOT a cookbook. It will not tell you how to design a power supply for a specific application. But this is not the books purpose. This book is written for those who wish to understand in depth knowledge of power conversion. It is written as a text book. If the reader took the time to understand what is written (and it is written well) then the person would be able to design a power supply for any application using any topolgy. It teaches you the first principles of power conversion in order for you to apply it. Out of all my power electronic books this is my favorite book by far. If you are a power supply designer this book is a must.
Powerfully good.......2004-01-10
Fundamentals of Power Electronics, by Erickson and Maksimovic, has become one of my new favorite reference books for DC-DC Converter design. My library is full of similar books, but most only contain insignificant bits of information, are needlessly difficult, or just plain worthless (but a requisite in the power engineering bookcase). The massive FPE combines the best of them all, exceeding even my former favorites (those by Tater, Billings, or Pressman). Although written as a textbook with the usual exercises at the end of each chapter (and frustratingly, with no answers) it is full of practical, applicable information. It has excellent chapters on inductors and transformers, with practical information such as inter-weaved windings for reduced leakage. It has one of the best treatments of Bode plots than any one book I have contains (I can now retire my old Valkenburg). Thankfully, it does not waste pages with useless Nyquist or other esoteric loop stability analysis methods. Nice index and appendix. I wish Maksimovic had included a section on his famous switched-capacitor circuit, even if not technically a power circuit. I highly recommend this book for any engineer seriously involved in power electronics.

Customer Reviews:
Great product & service.......2007-09-21
This was my first purchase from amazon and I was totally impressed by the quality of the product and the service! I would buy again from the same seller and recommend others to do the same.
A Very Bad Sequel.......2007-03-09
I have now used this book 3 times for a class. While the 1st edition did a nice job of covering the material in its time, the additions to in the 2nd addition are a disaster. What the book has going for it is that it at least lists the necessary material for such a course in the table of contents. However, all the additional material is poorly explained at best. The problem sets are too few and the ones that are included are generally weak.
I have tried to use this book, but after constant student complaints and my own difficulty with the text, I have finally concluded that the problem lies with the text and not with the users.
I think an indicator of problems was the large number of errors in the first printing; large here is an understatement. Even in later additions, the 4th, the size of the errata is huge. I think this is indicative of the authors' attention to detail and seriousness in preparation. I have found similar errors and ambiguities in the associate Computer Manual.
The bottom line is that this book has seen its final appearance in our curriculum. I would use any other text, even an older one.
There is simply not enough room or time to point out all the problems with this text. Do yourself a favor if considering this text for a class. Don't bother.
The best book for the discussed field.......2007-02-05
The discussed book is very explanatory and could be students' material for academic lessons.
great book.......2007-01-16
easy to read for computer scientists who are not necessarily experts in statistics. the code in matlab is very good, and helps a lot.
this book is a good introduction to machine learning.
Very well written.......2006-02-26
I liked this book because it does a great job explaining the concepts and the reasoning behind the mathematical formulae. Other books such as "The Elements of Statistical Learning" toss the Math formulas at you and expect you to figure out the significance or the importance of 'em. The book does not shy away from Math - but does a great job presenting it.

Great Introduction to Image Processing.......2007-09-16
(This review refers to the second edition of the book)
This book is a simple and very well written introduction to Image Processing. This book starts off with the very basics of the subject. In fact the introduction is a bit too long and may be boring for some. The book contains many examples from different real world applications. In most chapters this book covers only the very basic techniques, so readers who want to study more advanced concepts will have to look elsewhere. For example, this book does not cover Canny edge detection which is probably the benchmark edge detection algorithm. The chapter on wavelets was refreshing; it concentrated more on how wavelets can be used for image processing and less on the math. The chapters on enhancement, restoration and color are elementary. The chapter on compression was quite good. The book ends with a few chapters on segmentation and pattern recognition. Overall, its a very good introductory textbook well suited for senior undergraduate/first year graduate students.
Simply Excellent! Fully Justifies Its Price!.......2006-05-09
The preface of this book starts with a quote:
"When something can be read without effort, great effort has gone into its writing".
And once you start reading the book, you realize how much the book lives upto this. Everything is written clearly and importany points are stressed again and again in each topic until you become fully familiar with them. Topics are written with implementation in mind, as you can get started with writing your own code instantly.
The book makes the subject as interseting as it gets, and although some existing basic concepts of mathematics and statistics are quite helpful while reading, but you dont even have to be familiar with Digital Signal Processing to fully understand the contents.
Finally, I'd like to say that out of the few poeple that fully understand a concept, fewer have the gift to deliver their knowledge to others, and the authors of this book have that gift.
Excellent book for Image Processing.......2006-03-25
This book feeds the readers all the basic concepts of Image Processing. Very easily understandable and lucid in explanations. I would rate it one among the best EE books published so far.
OK book for 1st or 2nd year undergrads.......2006-02-14
I am giving this book 4 stars because it's quite descriptive and easy to follow. It covers some of the basic concepts behind digital image analysis and touches on the more general signal processing concepts, but it doesn't go very deep into the actual math. This may be what you want, but for me it was an assigned text for a 4th year undergrad course I took in college, and I found it inadequate. I felt like I could have written this book before I even started the class. At the same time, though, I think it would have been a great text for a more entry-level course.
If you want a text that goes in further detail and provides some math to chew on, I have to recommend the "Fundamentals of Digital Image Processing" by Anil K. Jain. It is also sold on Amazon, and I found it to be more appropriate for a 3rd year, 4th year, or Master's level course.
Turn Knowledge into Code.......2006-02-11
This is the best, most understandable image processing book I ever read. It is the
only image processing book I've ever read in which I could immediately turn the concepts into code (IDL). I spent most of a Christmas vacation thinking it was a novel I couldn't put down. That's about as good as it gets for a technical book! Well done, Gentlemen.

I do not recomend this book because the author gives poor explanations. In chapter 5, he explains steady state error for unity feed back HORRIBLY. He says the value of c(t) must be infinite or nonzero, but doesnt bother to show why. This book needs more work making concepts clearer and making less assumptions.
Its not all bad, but its not 5 stars everyone else has given it. I have read good textbooks, this isnt one of them.
Great Text!!.......2005-12-11
As a student in control systems engineering, I found this text to be very valuable (I had the 3rd Edition then). As an engineer, I found it to be my everyday reference. A few years back, I jumped ship from the engineering field and have obtained a PhD in another field of science and to my surprise, I still reference this text today. Great Text!! Dorf and Bishop is not bad but Nise takes first place.
Best Book for understanding the fundamentals of Control Systems.......2005-10-28
Norman Nise has done a great job with this book. This book is a first hand guide for beginners who have absolutely no knowledge of Control Systems and its purposes. The book with its details of each methodology & its purposes gives an indepth view of the subject. This is excellent tool for beginners (for understanding the fundamentals) and gradually upgrading to a better level by able to design systems. The Skill Assessment Exercises are able to bring out the key techniques to solve any problem. A must buy for all people interested in Control Systems Engineering and looking for a book where fundamentals can be cleared.
Very well written but a bit too "Mickey Mouse".......2005-10-06
For an applied math (and physics, to an extent) text, it is surprisingly interesting! The chapters are pretty easy reads but the coverage is thorough. In fact, it's too thorough at times. Nise has a little habit of taking a relatively simple concept and beating it to death. However, this is a good thing if you're a slow learner.
My one complaint is the "Mickey Mouse" factor. The problems are just too simple on the whole. I enjoy simple problems, but there aren't enough challenging ones. Even the long "practical" problems are generally pretty easy. Even so, the use of MATLAB in many of the problems is excellent.
A great feedback and control systems book. I highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
Residential Wiring.......2007-09-26
Well written. Easy reading and understandable. Figures and images enhance a clear understanding.
A textbook, not a reference book.......2007-05-26
The National Electric Code explains how wiring is to be done in structures built within the United States -- plus a few other countries that have adopted the code. The code is extremely comprehensive and difficult at times to understand.
This well-organized book does a wonderful job of reviewing different types of installations and discussing the practical aspects of completeing the project within the requirements of the code. The explanations always reference the code so that you can find more details or the exact tables involving the work you're completing.
The book approaches the code in sections, starting with a discussion of the code itself, then moving to reading electrical diagrams as commonly found on blueprints. The book covers simple wiring for switches and lights, branch circuits, and two-phase circuits for large appliances. In all sections, the book throroughly describes physical installation requirements and explains the different conduit, wire types, and boxes that can be used.
The balance of the book discusses near-water installations, special purpose outlets, low-voltage installations and HVAC-related work. The book also includes discussions of service entrance work on both the service side and the load side, as well as stand-by power systems.
The book is well-indexed and includes a good glossary.
Throughout, this book is very well written, with very clear examples and explanations. It is easy to find information you need to work on your project.
I'd review this book with five stars except for one issue: it's not clear from any of the descriptions that the book is a textbook. Each chapter ends with a set of example problems and questions, but does not provide answers to the exercises within the book. Instead, the reader must pursue the instructor's manual -- which can't be ordered at Amazon, and also can't be ordered directly from the Thompson/Delmar site; presumably, it's only available to bona fide teachers.
The exercises can mostly be answered by carefully studying the material of the chapters. But for a book that describes itself as a "trusted resource", I'd expect solved examples, not quiz questions as in a student textbook.
Despite the fact that this is really a text book, there's plenty of reasons to buy and use the book if you're not a student. It does a great job of explaining the code with practical, current examples, good drawings, and clear pictures of real products.
great for the homeowner, starting electrician.......2007-04-22
I'm a homeowner who has wired 2 houses (not including the one I grew
up in, helping my mother pull Romex since I was 6) as well as helped
friends and relatives with theirs.
Wish I had read this book sooner, despite it's price. It covers very
comprehensively the NEC, including references to specific sections.
One thing it does very well that other books DON'T do, is provide diagrams
of exactly which wires go where (not something I really needed, but
best diagrams of any of the wiring books out there). Also, plenty of
examples and above average exercises at the end of each
chapter. I think this book is mostly used as a textbook.
Each chapter is a good, well written balance of
1) code requirements
2) diagrams of actual circuits
3) do's and don'ts
4) specifics of the circuits for that particular room (Clothes Dryer
Circuit Wiring)
5) pictures of actual components
6) practice questions
Weak points:
The low voltage wiring section is outdated.
You really should be running all this in conduit or ENT smurf tube with
pull strings for future proofing anyway.
The other books you really should buy:
1) An NEC code book as a companion
2) the Electrical Wiring Commercial by Ray Mullins and maybe the
Raceway book. The Residential book just doesn't cover conduit as
comprehensively.
3) Rex Cauldwell's Wiring a House. He's not nearly as comprehensive, but
he does a much much better job of explaining what you SHOULD be doing, not
just what you have to do per the NEC.
Most of the other books out there are just poorly written rehashes of the
NEC.
great book to start with.......2007-03-19
its a good fast glimps into the NEC code book, its a lighten up version with a more down to earth view. maybe one step closer to the students then the code book it self. however i just had to buy the NEC code book because this is not as comprehensive. its hard to find fault in a good product and it is what it is.
Poorly organized and not on point.......2007-02-28
I spent quite a bit of time researching to find a good book on residential wiring for a rewire project I was looking to tackle in my early 1900 house. In the end, I purchased three books:
1. Electrical Wiring Residential - by Mullin
2. Wiring a House (for Pros by Pros) - by Cauldwell
3. Complete Guide to Home Wiring (Black and Decker)
Unfortunately I have to say that I found this (Mullin's book) to not be user friendly. While I think there is a wealth of information within the book, it is not organized in a very logical manner and tends to be filled with pages of details that aren't that meaningful for most readers.
For example, Chapter two spends quite a bit of time discussing electrical symbols commonly found on an electrical plan [how many people really need to know this?]. Then, intermixed in Chapter two is information of the number of wires in a box, selecting the right size box, etc. [important info for most people doing a wiring job]. Further, the specific NEC code is typically co-mingled with other [often not important] information throughout chapters, making it very hard to easily find code requirements on a specific topic. Point being, the book isn't logically organized, basically to the point of being distracting.
My recommendation to the author would be to have chapters laid out in a more logic manner (i.e. a chapter on a specific topic, e.g. a chapter on wire, a chapter on boxes, a chapter on lighting, a chapter on recetacles, etc.) and to have a consistent approach to where the code requirements would be found in each chapter (e.g. at the end of the chapter), so it is is always easy for the reader to find.
As side note, this book does not have any information on old wire and minimal information on doing a rewire project. Further, it does little to provide meaningful and helpful/practical hints.
I personally preferred Cauldwell's Wiring a House (for Pros by Pros). In my opinion, Cauldwell's book focuses more on giving the information you will TRULY need to know to get a job done. I got much more out of the approximate 200 pages in Cauldwell's book than the 700 pages in Mullin's book. Cauldwell's book is better organized, more on point, and written in far clearer language. Further, while Cauldwell's book respects and presents the code, he takes it further by providing best practices ("above code") and also provides many helpful/practical hints.
To the extent you want a book that has every detail on the topic of residential electrical (such as a several paragraph explanation of why code uses the term "Luminaire" rather than "Light Fixture"), then this is a book for you. If you want a book that gives the information you need to get the majority of residential jobs done AND delivers this information in a manner that is concise and easy to understand... then I recommend a different book, such as Cauldwell's book noted above.

Book Description
This introduction provides an in-depth, comprehensive treatment of a collection of classical and state-space approaches to control system design. It ties the methods together so that a designer is able to pick the method that best fits the problem at hand. Includes case studies and comprehensive examples with close integration of MATLAB throughout. Clearly marks problems to indicate which section they are drawn from for easier reference. Provides a logical presentation of a control engineer’s approach to key problems (such as rejection of disturbances, improvement in steady-state errors, and better dynamic response); compares the performance of the feedback structure to that of open-loop control. A useful reference for aerospace, mechanical, or electrical engineers who want to brush up on their skills in dynamic systems.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for experienced engineers.......2007-06-14
I found lots of answers to practical situations encountered in electro-mech. systems. If you are working with signals, this book gives you good advice in general, and sufficient theory background to back it up. It is well written and has lots of plots - uses Matlab.
Excellent book for an introductory control design course..........2007-05-01
As a student learning this material, I have to say that from beginning to end, just about everything you'd want to know about control system design is in this book. Well compiled and collated off, with enough pictures to satisfy any engineer, I've got the important pages tabbed and it's now a part of my permanent reference library. The examples and the motivations behind everything done in the book are enough to get you designing your own feedback control systems.
A few things you should know: the book examples jump around a LOT. Examples from chapter 7 draw on diagrams and examples in chapter 4, etc... and consecutive pages will often refer to figures and diagrams that aren't even on the current page, nor will they tell you where they are sometimes. I found myself flipping back and for and back and forth often when trying to follow examples or read chapters.
Second, I really hope you aren't trying to learn control system design without MATLAB. All I gotta say is... DON'T. For example: the intricacies of linear quadratic regulator theory are not as important as learning how to apply it in a design project. Plus, the iterative nature of control system design means that you will want to save your process as an m-file. Don't try this stuff without a copy of, or access to a copy of MATLAB.
There are better options.......2006-07-10
I own several books on Control Systems (including this one), but if you have to buy just one and you are in the process of choosing it, I would recommend Katsuhiko Ogata's Modern Control Engineering.
This is not a good textbook for a beginner, and considering its price, it's not a good buy.
Sucks.......2005-09-28
Well first off the book does not do a good job of providing sufficient examples on how to do things. On top of that the solution manual you can get online through those 2 ppl that are selling it is useless. It has all the problems worked out wrong...just my luck!
Good Sections on PID and Multivariable.......2005-06-15
As a practicing engineer, I found the book's sections on PID controllers and Multivariable control to be more informative than my other references, including the venerable Ogata.
Though perhaps the objections listed in the other reviews are valid when the text is used for an introductory course, I would just like to point out the text had value for me in understanding real-world PID controllers. Not sure if I would recommend it over Ogata for an introductory course, though.
Both Ogata and this text make extensive use of Matlab, which is almost a requirement to have in order to follow the examples. The author makes available all his Matlab source code on his website, as well.
