Product Description

“There is no other information retrieval/search book where the heart is the mathematical foundations. This book is greatly needed to further establish information retrieval as a serious academic, as well as practical and industrial, area." ---Jaime Carbonell, Carnegie Mellon University. “Berry and Browne describe most of what you need to know to design your own search engine. Their strength is the description of the solid mathematical underpinnings at a level that is understandable to competent engineering undergraduates, perhaps with a bit of instructor guidance. They discuss the algorithms used by most commercial search engines, so you may find your use of Google and its kind becomes more effective, too.” --George Corliss, Marquette University. “This book gives a valuable, generally non-technical, insight into how search engines work, how to improve the users' success in Information Retrieval (IR), and an in-depth analysis of a mathematical algorithm for improving a search engine's performance. …Written in an informal style, the book is easy to read and is a good introduction on how search engines operate…” —Christopher Dean, Mathematics Today, October 1999. The second edition of Understanding Search Engines: Mathematical Modeling and Text Retrieval follows the basic premise of the first edition by discussing many of the key design issues for building search engines and emphasizing the important role that applied mathematics can play in improving information retrieval. The authors discuss important data structures, algorithms, and software as well as user-centered issues such as interfaces, manual indexing, and document preparation. Readers will find that the second edition includes significant changes that bring the text up to date on current information retrieval methods. For example, the authors have added a completely new chapter on link-structure algorithms used in search engines such as Google, and the chapter on user interface has been rewritten to specifically focus on search engine usability. To reflect updates in the literature on information retrieval, the authors have added new recommendations for further reading and expanded the bibliography. In addition, the index has been updated and streamlined to make it more reader friendly. Instructors will find that the book serves as an excellent companion text for courses in information retrieval, applied linear algebra, and scientific computing. Because of the authors’ informal, conversational tone, readers with nonmathematical backgrounds also will appreciate the less technical chapters of the text.

4 out of 5 stars Good Introduction.......2007-05-07

There are better books in the market, and even the author would be the first to recognize it. However, this book is one of the most clear and readable introduction to the subject that you can find.

The author fully acomplishes the objective: teach his reader, at undergratuate level, how search engines work. Even some difficult subject, such as LSI, are treated at a level one can easilly understand.

One of the most important characteristics of the book is that it does math. Every formula has an example, usually using small matrix that allow the reader to easilly follow them.

The book is suitable for an objective introduction to the field. It is not very "academic", in the sense it is rather informal. If it is not a textbook, it could help some bewildered student to grasp the inner workings. It could also help a teacher to find clearer ways for explanations and good examples for classroom.

1 out of 5 stars Read at the bookstore, no need to buy.......2002-05-19

This little booklet is best to be read at the bookstore.

There is no need to buy. In fact, buying it is a waste
of money, given the $[money] price tag. That is about a $[money]
a page.

So, save your money and time...

4 out of 5 stars Appreciations from a novice........2000-06-29

I read this book because I am starting academic research on search engines. It was one of my first books on the subject. It actually deals with two aspects: (1) relevant issues in search engine design, and (2) a mathematically sound approach in building and querying large index strucutres. The explanation in the book on both aspects is short but to the point and explained in an understandable way. It also contains a short list + description of some key references. Great !

Book Description

Modeling the Environment is the first introductory textbook for a technique of rapidly growing importance. It requires little or no mathematical background, and is appropriate for undergraduate environmental students as well as professionals new to modelling. Developed from the author's own introductory course, it is classroom-tested and represents an important contribution to the field of system dynamics.

Modeling techniques that allow managers and researchers to see in advance the consequences of actions and policies are becoming increasingly important to environmental management. The models produced are vital analytical tools that aid the policy-setting and implementation process, and help us to understand how environmental systems respond to management interventions.

Modeling the Environment is a basic introduction to one of the most widely known and used modeling techniques, system dynamics. The book is designed to build the skills of students as they progress from learning fundamental ideas to constructing models of increasing complexity. Written in a clear and comprehensible style, the book:

.

In addition, the book contains more than 300 figures and model illustrations, and provides a guide to an interactive website where students can use the text to "navigate" management flight simulators ? models of both real and hypothetical systems developed by the author. The book also contains appendixes that help students review the necessary math, and which provide additional concepts and exercises for further study.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Anyone.......2006-12-12

This is a great book for anyone who wants to gain a thorough understanding of Stella software. The book is easy to read, and the examples and case studies are well chosen.

5 out of 5 stars Great interdisciplinary book on environmental modeling.......2000-05-24

A highly readable introduction to environmental modeling. What distinguishes the book from other environmental science and environmental modeling works is its interdisciplinary treatment. In particular, the models integrate the physical world and the world of human behavior. Far too many environmental models fail to close the feedbacks between human behavior and the state of the environment, instead taking waste inputs or resource use as exogenous. This book helps students learn to model human behavior (social and economic) as an integral part of the ecological system. The models and software mean the book encourages active learning, and enable students to explore important issues on their own if they choose.

3 out of 5 stars Modeling the Environment.......2000-04-24

This book is easy to read and contains clear examples of how to use stella software to model the environment. The marvel here is the software, not the book. For the software timid, it might suppliment the software users guide.

      Book Description

Despite advances in modeling, such as graphical user interfaces, the use of GIS layers, and databases for developing input files, the approaches to modeling phosphorus (P) have not changed since their initial development in the 1980s. Current understanding of P processes has evolved and this new information needs to be incorporated into the current models. Filling this need, Modeling Phosphorus in the Environment describes basic approaches to modeling P, how the current models implement these approaches, and ways to improve them. The book sets the scene with a review of general approaches to modeling runoff and erosion, P in runoff, leaching of P, stream processes that affect P, and an examination of the important issue of model uncertainty. It describes state-of-the-science watershed-scale P transport models including dynamic semi-disturbed models, models of intermediate complexity, and two lumped models. Phosphorus Indexes (PIs) represent one end of the modeling spectrum and the book takes a comprehensive look at PIs developed in each state, and illustrates some of the problems encountered when incorporating PIs into farm-scale manure management software. The book discusses monitoring data, which is critical for calibrating models, and concludes with suggestions for improving the modeling of P. From researching mechanisms to applying regulations, the uses of phosphorus models have increased as our knowledge of the effects of phosphorus in the environment has increased. Drawing on contributions from experts, the book gives you the tools to select the model that best fits your needs.

      Book Description

The challenges facing groundwater scientists and engineers today demand expertise in a wide variety of disciplines–geology, hydraulics, geochemistry, geophysics, and biology. As the number of the subdisciplines has increased and as each has become more complex and quantitative, the problem of integrating their concepts and contributions into a coherent overall interpretation has become progressively more difficult. To an increasing degree transport simulation has emerged as an answer to this problem, and the transport model has become a vehicle for integrating the vast amount of field data from a variety of sources and for understanding the relationship of various physical, chemical, and biological processes.

Applied Contaminant Transport Modeling is the first resource designed to provide coverage of the discipline’s basic principles, including the theories behind solute transport in groundwater, common numerical techniques for solving transport equations, and step-by-step guidance on the development and use of field-scale modeling.  The Second Edition incorporates recent advances in contaminant transport theory and simulation techniques, adding the following to the original text:

-An expanded discussion of the role of aquifer heterogeneity in controlling solute transport
-A new section on the dual-domain mass transfer approach as an alternative to the classical advection-dispersion model
-Additional chemical processes and reactions in the discussion of reactive transport
-A discussion of the TVD (total-variation-diminishing) approach to transport solution
-An entirely new Part III containing two chapters on simulation of flow and transport under variable water density and under variable saturation, respectively, and a third chapter on the use of the simulation-optimization approach in remediation system design

Applied Contaminant Transport Modeling, Second Edition remains the premier reference for practicing hydrogeologists, environmental scientists, engineers, and graduate students in the field. In 1998, in recognition of their work on the first edition, the authors were honored with the John Hem Excellence in Science and Engineering Award of the National Ground Water Association

4 out of 5 stars Suitability for those that are not engineers.......2005-10-14

This book provided an excellent explanation of the modeling of solutes and groundwater that conveyed a very good understanding of the challenges and methods used without resorting to the use of mathematical sophistication that actual ground water modelers no doubt possess.

In other words, I think that this book would benefit both those that are hydrologists and geologists as well as those that have had some training in environemental site assessment and remediation but have not been exposed to the actual number crunching that is essential for doing actual simulations.

This book has a dual objective: first to introduce the reader to some of the most important and widespread environmental issues of the day; and second to illustrate the vital role played by mathematical models in investigating these issues. The subjects covered are ground water contamination, air pollution, and hazardous materials emergencies. These issues are presented in their full real-world context and are used to develop important classical mathematical themes. The emphasis throughout is on fundamental principles and concepts, not on achieving technical mastery of state-of-the-art models.

5 out of 5 stars A very interesting textbook for an interdisciplinary course........2002-02-04

In the Spring of 2001, I used this book to teach a new course on mathematical modeling of environmental issues. I found this book to be a fascinating reading and wished to share it with students. The book's approach to environmental problems, and to their mathematical modeling, and the pedagogical suggestions given in the accompanying Instructor Manual, provided me with an excellent source for setting up an unusual and very successful mathematics course.
The book presents an in-depth introduction to several environmental issues of contemporary relevance, such as grounwater contamination, air pollution, and hazardous material handling. The students are exposed to most interdisciplinary aspects of the problems encountered. These aspects include social and ethical considerations, business, law and political implications, and the scientific side represented by chemistry, physics, geology and mathematics.Mathematical models are introduced as the natural machinery necessary for finding solutions to the quantitative aspects of the environmental problems. As such, even sophisticated models of air pollution, are accepted by students, with very little mathematical background, with a high degree of competence and enjoyment.Just as naturally, computers are being used to understand the implications of the mathematical modeling. That is, computers are used to carry out heavy computations and graph data (MS EXCEL), and to analyze case scenarios' danger zones in case of hazardous materials accidents. The later uses a risk analysis program which comes with the book, ARCHIE. ARCHIE is an interactive, user friendly DOS program which runs nicely once it is properly installed. It is a little tricky "fooling" the Windows environment into installing and running ARCHIE. I e-mailed Charles Hadlock, and he was very helpful talking me and the people at the Computer Lab through the installation.
The course requires a substantial amount of preparation to set it up initially, but this is to be expected for a course of such substantial interdisciplinary richeness. The instructor needs to become familiar with new software, read a little about environmental issues in an environmental science book, surf the Internet for relevant sites, and think how to teach the unfamiliar non-mathematical aspects of the course. All this work more them pays off in terms of what you end up offering the students, and their enthusiastic response. I am using this book again this semester. It is much easier and the students are just as enthusistic.
If you want to set up a course where mathematics is involved in solving some of the world's major problems in a natural and interesting way, I highly recommend that you use this book.
Sarah Glaz, Professor of Mathematics, University of Connecticut.

3 out of 5 stars Not Good as Primary Text.......1999-12-19

I used this as the text for a course in Mathematical Models and Applications, and I do not recommend that other teachers use it. I spent an average of somewhere between 5 and 10 hours per presentation (the class met three times per week) and that wasn't enough. The book's background information on groundwater, air quality, and hazardous materials was enough to get me started, but I found I had to spend a lot of time learning environmental information not covered in the book. I also spent an incredible amount of time constructing homework and exam problems. The book really isn't all that bad, and can serve well as an introduction to the subject for a college teacher who wants to learn something about this, but as a primary text it requires way too much preparation time on the part of the teacher, especially at an institution with a heavy teaching load. (I had an 11-hour teaching load.) By the way, the hazardous materials program used by the authors of the text, ARCHIE, is being phased out, and information about it is hard to obtain. (It doesn't even run on some modern computer systems.) Its replacement, CAMEO, currently has serious installation problems. It isn't all that hard to get around them on your own computer, but installation on computers in a lab may be a different story. Book Description

Increasingly used to represent climatic, biogeochemical, and ecological systems, computer modeling has become an important tool that should be in every environmental professional's toolbox. Environmental Modeling: A Practical Introduction is just what it purports to be, a practical introduction to the various methods, techniques, and skills required for computerized environmental modeling. Exploring the broad arena of environmental modeling, the book demonstrates how to represent an environmental problem in conceptual terms, formalize the conceptual model using mathematical expressions, convert the mathematical model into a program that can be run on a desktop or laptop computer, and examine the results produced by the computational model. Equally important, the book imparts skills that allow you to develop, implement, and experiment with a range of computerized environmental models. The emphasis is on active engagement in the modeling process rather than on passive learning about a suite of well-established models. The author takes a practical approach throughout, one that does not get bogged down in the details of the underlying mathematics and that encourages learning through "hands on" experimentation. Environmental Modeling: A Practical Introduction by Mike Barnsley (CRC) Increasingly used to represent climatic, biogeochemical, and ecological systems, computer modeling has become an important tool that should be in every environmental professional's toolbox.
He provides a set of-software tools and data sets that you can use to work through the various examples and exercises presented in each chapter, as well as presentational material and handouts for course tutors. Comprehensive and up-to-date, the book discusses how computational models can be used to represent environmental systems and illustrates how such models improve understanding of the ways in which environmental systems function.
The initial motivation to write this book stemmed from the perception of a growing divide between the increasingly sophisticated computer-based models that are being developed to represent various aspects of Earth's environmental systems (including those pertaining to its climate, ecosystems, biogeochemical cycles and hydrological processes) and the ability of many undergraduate students, and even some graduate students, of the environmental sciences to engage constructively with these models. The aim of this book, therefore, is to provide a practical introduction to the various methods, techniques and skills involved in computerized environmental modeling, including (i) representing an environmental problem in conceptual terms (i.e., devel¬oping a conceptual model), (ii) formalizing the conceptual model using mathemati¬cal expressions (i.e., formulating a mathematical model), (iii) converting the math¬ematical model into a program that can be run on a desktop or a laptop computer (i.e., implementing a computational model) and (iv) examining the results produced by the computational model (i.e., visualizing the output from a model and checking the model's validity in comparison with observations of the target system).

        Book Description

Dynamic Modeling of Environmental Systems is a primer on using models to understand environmental problems. With their many natural, economic, political, and technical aspects, environmental problems require a systems approach. This book provides an introduction to modeling concepts and applications that is specifically geared toward the environmental field. Sections on modeling terminology, the uses of models, the model-building process, and the interpretation of output provide the foundation for detailed applications. After an introduction to the basics of dynamic modeling, the book leads students through an analysis of several environmental problems, including surface-water pollution, matter-cycling disruptions, and global warming. The scientific and technical context is provided for each problem, and the methods for analyzing and designing appropriate modeling approaches is provided. An accompanying CD for both Macintosh and Windows computers contains a run-time version of STELLA modeling software with models from the text. While the mathematical content does not exceed the level of a first-semester Calculus course, the book gives students all of the background, examples, and practice exercises needed both to use and understand environmental modeling. It is suitable for upper-level undergraduate and beginning-graduate-level environmental science courses. The text is also useful for environmental professionals seeking an introduction to modeling in their field. About the Series: The availability of powerful, intuitive software for developing and running simulation models of real-world phenomena promises a revolution in studying, teaching, and thinking about complex problems that range from the functioning of a cell to that of an ecosystem to that of a national economy. The books in the series Modeling Dynamic Systems will promote the spread of "systems thinking" by integrating state-of-the-art modeling techniques with the theories and concepts of specific disciplines or interdisciplinary topics. The unifying theme of the series is the ease, power, and transparency of model-building.

        Book Description

Although archaeologists are using GIS technology at an accelerating rate, publication of their work has not kept pace. A state-of-the-art exploration the subject, GIS and Archaeological Site Location Modeling pulls together discussions of theory and methodology, scale, data, quantitative methods, and cultural resource management and uses location models and case studies to illustrate these concepts. This book, written by a distinguished group of international authors, reassesses the practice of predictive modeling as it now exists and examines how it has become useful in new ways. A guide to spatial procedures used in archaeology, the book provides a comprehensive treatment of predictive modeling. It draws together theoretical models and case studies and explains how modeling may be applied to future projects. The book illustrates the various aspects of academic and practical applications of predictive modeling. It also discusses the need to assess the reliability of the results and the implications of reliability assessment on the further development of predictive models. Of the books available on GIS, some touch on archaeological applications but few cover the topic in such depth. Both up to date and containing case studies from a wide range of geographical locations including Europe, the USA, and Australia, this book sets a baseline for future developments.

The list of reasons as to why a computer couldn't predict the location of an archaeological site covers at least a page of small type: we don't know where the water was in those times, we don't know the soil type in those days, we don't know the cultural or social values of the time and how they might have influenced site location.

In spite of this, the advent of ever better GIS software and higher performance computers have lead researchers around the world to being using GIS in a predictive manner to help identify potential sites worth investigating.

This book is a summary of research conducted around the world by people attempting to do just that. GIS can of course be used to map teraine and other features such as springs, both those flowing now and those from the past that have left traces. Combining these data with prediction equasions developed by the researcher have produced some interesting studies that point to success.

The book has a series of contributors from around the world: France, Greece, UK, Slovenia, Australia and of course many different organizations in the U.S. This book represents the state of the art in the field as it is known today.

          Book Description

A uniquely accessible text on environmental modeling designed for both students and industry personnel

Pollutant fate and modeling are becoming increasingly important in both regulatory and scientific areas. However, the complexity of the software and models often act as an inhibitor to the advancement of water quality science.

A Basic Introduction to Pollutant Fate and Transport fills the need for a basic instructional tool for students and environmental professionals who lack the rigorous mathematical background necessary to derive the governing fate and transport equations. Taking a refreshingly simple approach to the subject that requires only a basic knowledge of algebra and first-year college chemistry, the book presents and integrates all of the aspects of fate and transport, including chemistry, modeling, risk assessment, and relevant environmental legislation; approaching each topic first conceptually before introducing the math necessary to model it.

The first half of the book is dedicated to the chemistry and physics behind the fate and transport models, while the second half teaches and reinforces the logical concepts underlying fate and transport modeling. This better prepares students for support jobs in the environmental arena surrounding chemical industry and Superfund sites.

Contributing to the book's ease of use are:
          * An extremely user-friendly software program, Fate(r), which uses basic models to predict the fate and transport of pollutants in lakes, rivers, groundwater, and atmospheric systems
          * The use of "canned" models to evaluate the importance of model parameters and sensitivity analysis
          * A wealth of easy-to-understand examples and problems
          * A chapter on environmental legislation in the United States and Europe
          * A set of lab exercises, as well as a downloadable set of teaching aids

A much-needed basic text for contemporary hydrology or environmental chemistry courses and support courses forthe environmental industry, this is a valuable desk reference for educators and industry professionals.
