Great Book.......2007-03-20
A great tool for Harmonic Analysis. The book is really well written, a most read for any one who is interested in the area of wavelets, S.P. or harmonic analysis.
The most universal treatment of the subject.......2005-06-08
I say universal because this book would appeal to engineers, computer scientists, and mathematicians alike. Mallat was particularly successful to present the topic in a sufficiently rigorous way but without losing sight of the practical and more intuitive side. The presentation comprises the mathematical and the signal processing viewpoints simultaneously. The wavelet field is very vast by now with several subfields. In this respect, Mallat made a great selection of topics in this book. There is a chapter on estimation which offers great review material and pretty much the state-of-the art on signal estimation over a wavelet basis. The chapter on approximation is particularly useful for those who are not well versed in approximation theory and thus are unable to understand other treatments. If you're interested in learning wavelet theory to solve practical problems such as image compression, signal estimation, etc, this is the book to have.
The worst textbook I have ever seen.......2004-02-12
I just finished Chapter 3 of this book, but I have had enough of it. Conceptions about Fourier Transform are not clear at all. And the most unbearable thing is that, there are many printing errors which may lead to misunderstanding.
Algorithms and much more!.......2002-07-10
The subject of wavelets has many facets, --infinite in all directions;-- some of the more exciting sides of the subject
are algorithmic, and the underlying mathematical principles are both simple and powerful. Stephane Mallat's great, and readable, book, in both of its editions, brings
this out wonderfully!
A bold approach to wavelet transforms that simplifies.......2002-04-24
This is an outstanding tour through the field of wavelet decompositions of both continuous and discrete signals. It employs the formalism of Hilbert space, instead of linear algebra. This is important because the power of this formalism yields insights into the subject matter that are practically impossible in linear algebra. The formalized approach allows a wide variety of subjects to be placed on a common basis (no pun intended). For example, the transition of the treatment of the Fourier transform into Hilbert space, brings to bear the powerful guns of that space (such guns as inner product and completeness), and allows for a truly elegant proof of the Parseval and Plancherel formulas.
Parseval's theorem, simply stated, is that the inner products in Hilbert space are conserved by the Fourier transform. How simple. Linear algebra approaches cannot hope to make things this simple.
Proof of the General Sampling Theorem is equally elegant; it is shown that the projection of the function to be decomposed onto a basis function gives the discrete spectral coefficient.
Readers will also enjoy the treatment of windowed Fourier transforms and frames.
I should add a note about the style of the treatise. This treatise is not ordinary. It consistently uses very precise and carefully defined symbology. Contrary to popular belief, this makes the text easier to read, not more difficult. Once the reader understands the symbol set being used (they are all defined in the front of the text), even the proofs are tractable. Yes, I said proofs. That is another aspect of the text. There are proofs embedded in the text, without loss of continuity or clarity. Proofs are necessary to a good understanding of the subject matter. The formalism of theorems, lemmas and propositions makes the conclusions understandable, because the theorems, lemmas and propositions supporting the conclusions are identifiable.
I applaud the author for his approach and recommend that other text book writers use the same approach.

Book Description
This volume explains how the recent advances in wavelet analysis provide new means for multiresolution analysis and describes its wide array of powerful tools. The book covers variations of the windowed Fourier transform, constructions of special waveforms suitable for specific tasks, the use of redundant representations in reconstruction and enhancement, applications of efficient numerical compression as a tool for fast numerical analysis, and approximation properties of various waveforms in different contexts.
Book Description
Although DSP has long been considered an EE topic, recent developments have also generated significant interest from the computer science community. DSP applications in the consumer market, such as bioinformatics, the MP3 audio format, and MPEG-based cable/satellite television have fueled a desire to understand this technology outside of hardware circles.
Designed for upper division engineering and computer science students as well as practicing engineers, Digital Signal Processing Using Matlab and Wavelets emphasizes the practical applications of signal processing. Over 100 Matlab projects and wavelet techniques provide the latest applications of DSP, including image processing, games, filters, transforms, networking, parallel processing, and sound.
The book also provides the mathematical processes and techniques needed to ensure an understanding of DSP theory. Designed to be incremental in difficulty, the book will benefit readers who are unfamiliar with complex mathematical topics or those limited in programming experience. Beginning with an introduction to Matlab programming, it moves through filters, sinusoids, sampling, the Fourier transform, the Z transform and other key topics. An entire chapter is dedicated to the discussion of wavelets and their applications. A CD-ROM (platform independent) accompanies the book and contains source code, projects, and Microsoft® PowerPoint slides.
Customer Reviews:
Great introduction to MatLab and DSP.......2007-07-27
This book is very readable and is chock-full of examples, sample code and explanations of DSP concepts. I think the best way to read it is to start with Chapters 1-2, which give an introduction to DSP and an overview of MatLab. Then, immediately follow this with Chapter 10, which covers applications. Subsequent chapters can be read as needed.

wavelets for engineers.......2003-01-25
The marriage of signal processing and wavelets has spun off a host of exciting applications of math and algorithms. The use of wavelets outside of math itself is a recent sucess story. As a rule, it was an unexpected combination of ideas,-- as opposed to a single one, that generated the most powerful applications. The present very nice book is aimed at students taking a service course, for example electrical or optical engineers, but it has broader appeal as well. The authors start with basic principles from math, and move on to multicarrier communication systems..., and boundary value probems.

Good for actual implemtation.......2005-02-10
This book is a good overview of Multirate signal processing. It has a good mix of theory and practical application. I was able to use this book to help me design an almost perfect reconstruction modifed DFT filterbank for use in a Xilinx FPGA.
good starter.......2003-09-16
By luck, this book was the first I tried for filter banks. Although sparse in some parts, I found it easy to replicate the examples and extend them. Working through this book wasn't all that hard and seemed to give a good basis for further study. Vaidyanathan looks somewhat formidable.
Save Your money.......1999-06-09
Touches on many aspects of multirate theory, but gives little in-depth substance. For a book this pricy, I would expect something more. Buy Vaidyanathan instead....the bible of multirate.

Wavelets and Sub-band Coding.......2006-02-23
It is an excelent book for anyone interested in wavelets from a Discrete Time Signal Processing point of view.
It has a good introduction and review of basic topics, concepts and definitions necessary to grab the basis of DSP in the first chapters. Therefor, it provides a good framework to study wavelets without having studied DSP.
However, it is better if you have studied DSP prior to reading this book. You will enjoy it much more!
Engineering, CS, programming, math..........2003-02-13
There are few books that sucessfully cover the interface of diverse fields, and yet this lovely book represents a subject that thrives on the interconnections. It is a great textbook, and it works well for selfstudy. The two subjects wavelets and subband filtering [from signal processing] are quite different, and have distinct and independent lives, they have different aims, and different histories. And yet, it is the happy marriage of the two that enriches the the union to an extraordinary degree. Multiresolutions are the bread and butter of wavelet algorithms, and they thrive on methods from signal processing, the quadrature-mirror filter construction, for example. One reason some books in the subject miss the target is that most authors know one of the subjects well, but not the others. Diverse subjects have quite different languages, and different terminology. The present authors are indeed on target, and they know it all. They come from engineering, but they know all the math;--the connections are made. And they strike a balance: Engineers can find what they want for the practical problems, and the mathematicians will not be disappointed. Programmers can pick up what is needed in their world. The book has been tested in courses, including mine. If you pick it for a course, the authors have material on their web pages that serves as a wonderful supplement. Lovely!
Hurried, incomplete mathematical treatment and undefined.......2002-05-28
The authors look hurried to catch the wave of wavelets and compiled hot topics of the publication date without almost any logical order. Lots of material taken from others' papers without generosity in the references. The book is missing to tell readers its purpose! Is it a mathematical treatment of wavelet transforms or an engineering book? I could not answer this question as a doctoral student. It's very much like a Ph.D. dissertation of the second author. Frankly, I was disappointed with the quality of the book from a known researcher like Prof. Vetterli.
Almost a great book.......2000-08-30
One get's the feeling that this is the outline for the definitive book on wavelets. But the authors can't make up there minds whether the book should be mostly theoretical or merely useful. A great deal of why and what - and not too much how to. Hopefully there will be another, more insightful edition.
The faithful shall be rewarded.......2000-07-07
Martin Vetterli is the foremost researcher in the area of wavelets in signal processing, and one of the best presenters whom I've met. That may be sufficient to convince some people to buy this book, but may discourage others from buying this book.
One thing to keep in mind while reading this book is the following: The faithful shall be rewarded. If you're uninitiated, this book can be very intimidating, and Martin goes through the first parts (considered to be review) a little bit hurriedly, all the way through the end of Chapter 3.
But once you get into Chapter 4, you will be treated with an excellent coverage of why wavelets are so great, and the state-of-the-art of its research and application. This is where the two authors truly work their magic in their writing.
Even as you try to get past Chapter 3, there are many gems to be discovered, for example the proof of the ambiguity function in time-frequency analysis.

Customer Reviews:
Images and more..........2005-10-28
There are many great examples of basic image processing techniques in this book. Topics like Image Filtering, Edge Detection and also some Wavelets. There is both theory and detailed examples which really helps when trying to get the DSP in a symbiotic relationship with Matlab, CodeComposer Studio and MS Visual Studio.
There is a logical flow in how information is presented. First a basic description of the algorithm. Second some Matlab or pseudo-code. Then third he describes exactly how to implement it on the c6x dsp. Not only are there implementation details but also interfacing explanation for both Matlab and Visual Studio.
Overall this is an excellent book for getting a project up and running in a timely fashion.
A well laid out introduction to embedded image processing.......2005-08-13
This is an extremely well laid out and understandable text. The coding examples are easy to understand and can be easily demonstrated on the TI DSK's. As a current TI employee with little experience with the C6x line of DSP's, Qureshi's book allowed me to learn a large amount of image processing background in a short time while becoming familiar with the workings of Code Composer Studio and the DSP. The book starts very simply and has clear instructions on how to obtain the tools to run all of the code samples on real DSPs.
Starting with an overview of the tools involved and the C6x architecture, Qureshi moves into simple image processing concepts, such as contrast stretching and window/level processing. After clearly explaining the concept and the implementation, the reader is led through the process of optimizing the code for the DSP environment. Later topics, such as edge detection and wavelets leave the reader with a clear understanding of the fundamentals of image processing, as well as code examples that make implementation a breeze.
Overall, an excellently written book and a must for anyone interested in image processing, whether on TI DSPs or not.

A masterpiece in wavelets.......2003-03-14
This is a very well written book on the theory of wavelets and its applications. The presentation is self-contained and may serve as an introduction for someone who wants to learn about this topic. It also is an excellent book for those who have an advanced graduate degree in applied mathematics since it demonstrates how to truly understand complex concepts. This book gives a general presentation of some recent developments in wavelet theory with an emphasis on techniques that have a geometric and spectral-theoretic flavor. It can be certainly used as a textbook for graduate students as well as as a reference book for the specialists and researchers. A very nice feature of the book are the tutorials at the beginning of each chapter and some sections, which serve as summaries of main ideas and guides through the background ideas and motivation. At the end of every chapter there are plenty of excercises of various level of difficulty. Overall, this is a great book and I recommend it highly to a motivated reader.
Distinguished link between math and computer science.......2003-03-11
This is an important mathematical reference written in excellent style. Wavelets have found applications in many areas of engineering and CS. The authors provide a detailed, rich and entertaining tour through this relatively young but important field for both math and CS/Eng. Connections are, e.g., made between advanced CS virtual-reality applications such as audio-systems processing, future applications such as quantum computing, and advanced math in functional analysis and operator theory.
A fresh look at wavelets.......2002-10-08
The Book by Bratteli and Jorgensen is a superb book on wavelet's theory. It is very well written and has new and a fresh point of view on the subject. Although there are several good books on wavelets, the book by Bratteli and Jorgensen covers an important niche that has not been covered before. In particular
1- The book covers the theory of wavelets from the point of view of operators and functional analysis and will appeal to a growing number of pure as well as applied mathematicians interested in the subject.
2- The writing of the book is very appealing: every chapter starts by a tutorial that gives motivation as well as intuition. It is then followed by a very clean mathematical development of the subject, together with many examples, figures, and applications from physics and engineering. A set of nice problems is provided at the end of each chapter. Thus this book can be used as a graduate textbook or for mathematical seminars in mathematics departments.
3- This book can even be used by experts in wavelet theory for learning about recent developments and new perspectives from operator theory and functional analysis.
I highly recommend this book.
an intriguing new wavelet book.......2002-09-09
This is a book about an important topic in applied mathematics by two authors with excellent credentials in both pure and applied areas. The reader will find many intriguing threads connecting wavelets to other parts of mathematics, including a wavelet index theorem, quantum computing, the ubiquitous C*-algebras O_n and, of course, spectral theory. The graphics are meticulously done.
I look forward to learning a lot from it.
An Intriguiging New Book.......2002-08-30
This is a book about an important topic in applied mathematics by two authors with excellent
credentials in both pure and applied areas.
The reader will find many intriguing threads connecting wavelets to other parts of mathematics, including a wavelet "index theorem", quantum computing, the ubiquitous Cuntz C*-algebras and, of course, spectral theory. The graphics are excellent. I look forward to learning a lot from it.
