5 out of 5 stars Good balance between theory and practice.......2006-03-13

This book provides a good balance between the mathematical theoretical foundations and the implementation of wavelet algorithms. The chapter of time-frequency analysis is specially relevant, and very hard to find in other books about the topic. The only miss is about more practical implementations of the algorithms.

5 out of 5 stars Reference for implementation of transform algorithms.......2003-09-05

This is the only book i know that is focused on implementation aspects of numerical transforms. It explains quite well the practical issues that are rarely touched in digital signal processing and wavelet textbooks. It spans fourier transforms, cosine, wavelets,... It is rather self-contained, if you have problems with maths you can skip chapter one, other chapters should be quite readable by every science grad student. Be aware that this is not a transform textbook, so you should first learn a few things about numerical transforms, wavelets and subband coding before getting into this one (go to Oppenheim and Schafer for DSP, Vetterli for subband coding). A good textbook for a course on numerical transforms implementation.

5 out of 5 stars *Creating* wavelets!.......2002-10-05

This is where to learn about wavelet packets, and what they can do.-- Where to learn the programming techniques that are especially adapted to wavelet algorithms, and which have proved their worth. The book actually tells you how to write a program;-- it motivates, and explains the elements step by step. It also gives the background, and offers a beautiful presentation of the essentials. It is selfcontained and a pleasure to read. It has the algorithmic approach to the discrete wavelet transform;--a topic that is hard to find elsewhere,-- at least in a systematic presentation.

4 out of 5 stars not the easiest one around but well describing algorithms.......1997-01-08

This book gave me a rather hard start with very dry and short theoretical introduction but the algorithmical/discrete part is well done and allows for implementation of most of the work where many details emerge ... I was missing solutions for the exercises though

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece in wavelets.......2003-03-14

This is a very well written book on the theory of wavelets and its applications. The presentation is self-contained and may serve as an introduction for someone who wants to learn about this topic. It also is an excellent book for those who have an advanced graduate degree in applied mathematics since it demonstrates how to truly understand complex concepts. This book gives a general presentation of some recent developments in wavelet theory with an emphasis on techniques that have a geometric and spectral-theoretic flavor. It can be certainly used as a textbook for graduate students as well as as a reference book for the specialists and researchers. A very nice feature of the book are the tutorials at the beginning of each chapter and some sections, which serve as summaries of main ideas and guides through the background ideas and motivation. At the end of every chapter there are plenty of excercises of various level of difficulty. Overall, this is a great book and I recommend it highly to a motivated reader.

5 out of 5 stars Distinguished link between math and computer science.......2003-03-11

This is an important mathematical reference written in excellent style. Wavelets have found applications in many areas of engineering and CS. The authors provide a detailed, rich and entertaining tour through this relatively young but important field for both math and CS/Eng. Connections are, e.g., made between advanced CS virtual-reality applications such as audio-systems processing, future applications such as quantum computing, and advanced math in functional analysis and operator theory.

5 out of 5 stars A fresh look at wavelets.......2002-10-08

The Book by Bratteli and Jorgensen is a superb book on wavelet's theory. It is very well written and has new and a fresh point of view on the subject. Although there are several good books on wavelets, the book by Bratteli and Jorgensen covers an important niche that has not been covered before. In particular

1- The book covers the theory of wavelets from the point of view of operators and functional analysis and will appeal to a growing number of pure as well as applied mathematicians interested in the subject.

2- The writing of the book is very appealing: every chapter starts by a tutorial that gives motivation as well as intuition. It is then followed by a very clean mathematical development of the subject, together with many examples, figures, and applications from physics and engineering. A set of nice problems is provided at the end of each chapter. Thus this book can be used as a graduate textbook or for mathematical seminars in mathematics departments.

3- This book can even be used by experts in wavelet theory for learning about recent developments and new perspectives from operator theory and functional analysis.

I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars an intriguing new wavelet book.......2002-09-09

This is a book about an important topic in applied mathematics by two authors with excellent credentials in both pure and applied areas. The reader will find many intriguing threads connecting wavelets to other parts of mathematics, including a wavelet index theorem, quantum computing, the ubiquitous C*-algebras O_n and, of course, spectral theory. The graphics are meticulously done.

I look forward to learning a lot from it.

    Book Description

    This concisely written book gives an elementary introduction to a classical area of mathematics—approximation theory—in a way that naturally leads to the modern field of wavelets. The exposition, driven by ideas rather than technical details and proofs, demonstrates the dynamic nature of mathematics and the influence of classical disciplines on many areas of modern mathematics and applications.

    Key features and topics:

    * Description of wavelets in words rather than mathematical symbols

    * Elementary introduction to approximation using polynomials (Weierstrass’ and Taylor’s theorems)

    * Introduction to infinite series, with emphasis on approximation-theoretic aspects

    * Introduction to Fourier analysis

    * Numerous classical, illustrative examples and constructions

    * Discussion of the role of wavelets in digital signal processing and data compression, such as the FBI’s use of wavelets to store fingerprints

    * Minimal prerequisites: elementary calculus

    * Exercises that may be used in undergraduate and graduate courses on infinite series and Fourier series

    Approximation Theory: From Taylor Polynomials to Wavelets will be an excellent textbook or self-study reference for students and instructors in pure and applied mathematics, mathematical physics, and engineering. Readers will find motivation and background material pointing toward advanced literature and research topics in pure and applied harmonic analysis and related areas.

The volume develops various periodic quasi-wavelets which can be used to solve the Helmholtz integral equation under some boundary conditions with complexity O(N). The last part of the work introduces a class of periodic wavelets with various properties.
      Audience: This volume will be of interest to applied mathematicians, physicists and engineers whose work involves approximations and expansions, integral equations, functions of a complex variable and numerical analysis.

        Book Description

        WAVELETS AND RENORMALIZATION describes the role played by wavelets in Euclidean field theory and classical statistical mechanics. The author begins with a stream-lined introduction to quantum field theory from a rather basic point of view. Functional integrals for imaginary-time-ordered expectations are introduced early and naturally, while the connection with the statistical mechanics of classical spin systems is introduced in a later chapter.

        A vastly simplified (wavelet) version of the celebrated Glimm-Jaffe construction of the f43 quantum field theory is presented. It is due to Battle and Federbush, and it bases an inductively defined cluster expansion on a wavelet decomposition of the Euclidean quantum field. The presentation is reserved for the last chapter, while the more basic aspects of cluster expansions are reviewed in the chapter on classical spin systems.

        Wavelets themselves are studied from two different points of view arising from two disciplines. The mathematical point of view covers the basic properties of wavelets and methods for constructing well-known wavelets such as Meyer wavelets, Daubechies wavelets, etc. The physical point of view covers the renormalization group formalism, where there is a close connection between wavelets and Gaussian fixed points.

        The book is heavily mathematical, but avoids the theorem-proof-theorem-proof format in the interests of preserving the flow of the discussion - i.e., it is written in the style of an old-fashioned theoretical physics book, but the major claims are rigorously proven. The minor themes of the book are reflection positivity, the combinatorics of cluster expansions, and the issue of phase transitions - themes which have nothing to do with wavelets, but which provide necessary cultural background for the physical context.
