5 out of 5 stars Wasn't the book described.......2006-01-18

The description given about the book did not correspond with the book I received. The book I received was not a hardcover nor was it the 550 pages as described. It was the paperback version that contained 384 pages. However, regardless of being paperback rather than hardcover, it was still the same book I needed. I ordered it on thursday, and received it on monday. The shipping was extremely fast and I'm very happy about it, because I needed this book ASAP to do my studies. And the price of the book couldn't be beat, I practically saved 60 bucks for a new book.

1 out of 5 stars not for beginners.......2005-03-07

I had to buy this book for my class. This book doesn't instruct how to input equations. Not enough example answer codes for each problem. Less visual and tedious to follow all words.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-01-16

This is a well-written book that provides a nice, concise introduction to numerical methods. As with other books by this author, it is very student friendly and should be particularly useful for people, like myself, who use it for self-study. I was not familiar with MATLAB prior to using the book. This book made it relatively easy for me to pick up the fundamentals and then implement numerical solutions. As a computer scientist, I also liked the emphasis placed on the development of M-files. My only criticism is that I wish the book covered more material. I hope that the author expands it in future editions.

5 out of 5 stars Justin London did it again.......2007-07-19

I highlight two points:

1. The inclusion of Matlab and Excel code in almost all topics of the book.
2. All the content is new and more advanced, there is no recovered topics of his previous book.

5 out of 5 stars Offers prebuilt code for immediate use.......2007-06-29

This book offers prebuilt, modifiable code that you can use for energy, power, weather and many other derivatives applications. The download process is fast and easy. For those who use Matlab, C++, or Excel, there is no competition. A great book with unique content and code.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for coding derivatives.......2007-06-16

This book was my ultimate go-to resource on several financial engineering projects (on the buy side). It covers many different derivatives and provides example MatLab and C++ code that is easy to modify and extend.

The instructions for setup and downloading the code could be more clear, perhaps on a CD.

5 out of 5 stars State of the art derivative modeling book.......2007-04-10

Great book. But the code downloading process is a bit weird. Don't know why they just attach a CD.

5 out of 5 stars Describes the Modelling Procedure and Gives the Code.......2007-02-08

Derivatives are not simple things. It almost seems that complexity was a design goal when they were being set up. In order to determine their real value either today or in the future you almost have to model them on a computer.

This book covers dozens of different types of derivatives, including the common ones and some of the new even more esoteric ones. It talks about the structure of the derivative, and then presents models of them. The models are presented in the most common modelling 'languages' in use today. There is a lot of code involved, but there is not a CD included with the book. Instead, an access code providing a one time download for the code. Note, a one time download. Be sure and save the code quickly and on several media. This procedure allows the models to be updated as needed without regard to the time it takes for the book to move from being written to being published, but if you have a disk crash....

The biggest things this book provides are: first, you get to see what an expert in the field has done, and second, you get the code to run his models on your system, and of course you can modify them if you find some other aspect suits your needs better.

This is a new book, first printed in December 2006, so it is current with the derivatives being marketing at that time.

5 out of 5 stars Great for learning the basics of MATLAB........2007-08-18

I purchased this title because I am starting a numerical analysis sequence next year using Matlab and I knew only how to plot in 2D and do simple calculations at the command line. After studying from Gilat's text for the past month or so I feel very comfortable using Matlab for all the basics and I am ready to learn how to exploit the full power of the program.

Each chapter gives just enough mathematical background to provide anyone with at least college algebra/trig enough to understand what is going on.
Although this book does not cover any topic too deeply, it does cover the fundamentals of many aspects of Matlab in a way that allows the reader to move fairly quickly through the whole book without getting bogged down in any one area.

In the end you will know the basics about how Matlab operates: how to work with vectors and matrices, how to write simple programs and function files, how to plot and format data, how to fit data to a curve, and how to differentiate and integrate both numerically and symbolically, and a bunch of other great tools for solving problems.

Also, as the other reviewers mentioned, the book makes very good use of graphics to show how input and output should look, as well as what exactly each line means.

I would recommend this text to anyone wanting to learn the basics of Matlab.

    5 out of 5 stars Reader.......2007-04-23

If you plan to start with Matlab with no prior experience, this book beats most of the other available titles.Since an inside view of the book is not available on Amazon, I will for the benefit of others list out the chapters here.Ch1 begins with the necessary introduction, developing familiarity with the command window, display formats and precedence of operators. It moves on to Ch2 and Ch3 where arrays are introduced and the mathematical operations on them explained.Ch4 is about script files,Ch5 on elementary plotting techniques using in-built functions like plot and fplot.Ch6 introduces functions and Ch7 extends the previous material to formal programming techniques like loops and control structures.Ch8 explains curve fitting and interpolation,Ch9 is about three dimensional plots and special graphics.Ch10, the last one of the book uses Matlab to do symbolic math which cover elementary algebraic equations. The examples contained in the book are from elementary physics and engineering,so if you are looking for more advanced material that has been treated using Matlab, this might be a little less helpful. The numerical techniques again cover simple problems like projectile trajectory, flow of water from a vessel with a small hole punched in its sidewall,RC circuits, viscosity and so on.Relatively advanced topics like Fourier transforms and applications to signal processing are also left out.If you are done with this book or feel that the material isnt of much help, I will suggest that you might try "Numerical Computing with Matlab" by Moler(he is perhaps one of the architects of Matlab). This book(electronic version) is available for free from the mathworks website [...].Overall this book does a good job in explaining details and is also generously sprinkled with figures and screenshots. Please try it if you are first timer to Matlab.

5 out of 5 stars Very good introduction.......2006-05-04

I had never used matlab when I started reading this book and I found it very easy to follow. I now have a good working understanding of the matlab basics and I recommend that anyone who's looking to get started with matlab pick up a copy.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect introductory text for MATLAB.......2005-12-08

If you are completely new to MATLAB then you will find no better book to guide you through the basics. It is perfectly suited for teaching yourself several basic but still very interesting and useful programming techniques. Topics are presented to the reader in an order carefully determined to produce maximum benefit and knowledge. The book is short and very readable, with many example programs.

In short: if you want a FIRST introductory textbook for MATLAB, you can't beat this book. And it covers the latest version (Release 14).

    5 out of 5 stars A truly excellent text!.......2005-11-21

This book was written for teaching Matlab to freshmen in an introductory engineering course, so most of the examples are from first year physics and engineering. Nevertheless, after looking at all competing texts, I chose it to teach Matlab to sophomore geology majors, most of whom had not yet taken calculus or physics. I was very happy with the results; by the end of the semester the students were well on their way to being competent programmers, and I think they will find calculus and physics much easier because of their experience with this book.

I chose this text because it is very well written--you can tell the author has had long experience teaching the subject--and because of its many excellent examples. Most people learn faster by example than by theory, and the examples in this book are easier to follow than those of other texts. Each example shows the command window with a gray background and white insets, or call-outs, containing explanations. The pages are attractive.

In the main text, Matlab commands are set in Courier to clearly distinguish them from the discussion itself. Sections are fairly short and easy to follow, and at the end of each chapter there are many problems of gradually increasing difficulty. The solutions to some problems are given at the back of the book. The abundance of complete examples makes it easy to skip around in the book as soon as students are familiar with Matlab syntax. There are astonishingly few typos and none were serious. Cell arrays and structures are used only where needed for particular commands, a wise pedagogical decision. I particularly enjoyed the second edition's new chapter on symbolic math, as I had never used this part of Matlab in my own research.

The book is 7.5"x9.25" in size with 343 pages, and so is easy to carry around. It's inexpensive, as textbooks go nowadays.

    3 out of 5 stars Okay for a text.......2006-03-18

This book is okay for a text book, however there arent many examples, and the examples that are there are very simple. There are solutions for some problems online, though most of them are very basic and don't help very much.

    4 out of 5 stars Useful Book.......2004-08-28

This is a nice book for scientists and engineers. There are MATLAB programs already written that you can download from the webpage very easily, and modify for your specific use. I am no programmer, so having programs I can easily modify is a plus. This is meant to only be a review of linear algebra, so if you are trying to learn that subject, you will probably need to supplement this text with another book. This is not terribly in-depth on the MATLAB either. But it is a very useful handbook of plotting and interpolation methods, and how to choose the best methods for your particular set of data.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction.......2007-04-17

I found this to be a well written, easy to comprehend introduction to MatLab programming. I had programs written and running within the first two hours of reading it. Makes a great quick reference as well.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST first MATLAB book for sicentists and engineers.......2006-11-08

This book is a true joy to read. It is well-organized, well-written, and provides the most clearly illustrated (through examples and figures) introduction to MATLAB I have found. More importantly, it is specifically geared to scientists and engineers e.g. those seeking to exploit MATLAB's numerical methods capabilities either for teaching, learning, or researching. Each chapter contains relevant and useful exercises from the material and provides complete answers for you to check your work right away. The sections on graphics and publishing are very nice and demonstrate how MATLAB is a full-service software tool. The second half of the book provides an excellent overview of "Applications" - basically, numerical methods using MATLAB. The book focuses on the built-in functions for root finding, quadrature, ODEs, etc. but not the details of the algorithms themselves (here it refers you to a numerical methods textbook). This should be the first book any scientist or engineers buys when starting to learn MATLAB. The MATLAB Guide by Higham and Higham (2nd Edition, SIAM) should be next . . . Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Well worth it for beginners.......2006-05-06

This book is extremely helpful for novice MATLAB users who need to generate results quickly. It is concise and easy to navigate.

    5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2006-02-21

This is a very fine resource for laerning Matlab from the introductory level.

5 out of 5 stars An easy Intro!.......2006-01-30

I think this is a really nice and user friendly book if you look for a painless intro to mathlab, or if you look for the quick and essential tips that can get you started hands-on with a few functions or programs. No prerequisites are needed!
Of the computer and programming tools out there in math and in CS, Matlab is probably the one that it tailored more directly to numerical computations and to matrices (to graphics too!); as opposed to symbolic manipulations, where perhaps Mathematica and Mable have an edge. Yet, these choices often come down to a matter of taste, and to what you are used to. Or what the book or the class is steering you towards.
Still, I noticed over the past year, that teachers and students involved with elementary numerical analysis, math, or CS courses have liked this little book. And yet, there are lots of other Matlab-books out there; as well as manuals, step-by-step guides, etc; and some are even free on the web. Thanks God for Google! But this little book seems especially attractive for beginners.

I have yet to find a good guide to Matlab GUI building. The manuals are too pedantic (lots of style advice and arrows and pictures), and the other books I have spend too much time explaining lists of properties and options. This book also suffers from this: just listing a bunch of options and then going down the list to explain each in turn. I was looking for something more practical, for a higher level programmer: how to go from start to finish of some primary GUI types, with perhaps some brief asides about the various options. This book does do step-by-step solutions to different problems, but the problems seem rather simplistic (not 'advanced') and anyway haven't really addressed the issues I am facing.

Part of the problem is Matlab itself: the data structures used for GUIs are convoluted and opaque and the techniques for building GUIs have gone through a number of revisions so that there are many ways to do the same thing. And I am still not clear what the advantages of the different methods are. So while I can't say that this is a great manual, it isn't any worse than the others. But in the end you will probably end up switching back and forth between all of them and the on-line help -- and still not be able to solve your problems!

    5 out of 5 stars excellent resource.......2007-03-09

I desperately needed this! Although there was a lot of the "handle" concept that I still had to struggle to learn (and am still learning), this book made it 100 times easier to create my more advanced applications!

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT book!.......2006-12-07

I taught a course this quarter which introduced our grad students to the fundamentals of MatLab programming -- this book is by far the best reference I could find for the section on "Graphical User Interfaces"!

5 out of 5 stars Has it all! Why bother with any other resource!.......2006-08-04

Superb! Succinct and to the point,no need for multiple tomes on the same subject to gain the advantages of this knowledge, this one actually has it all! Kudos,Mr. Smith!

    1 out of 5 stars worst ever!!!.......2004-01-29

I've had Dr. Venkat as a professor for 3 classes at RIT and he is by far the worst I have ever had. DO NOT BUY HIS BOOK! It will only make you dumber! That is how I feel after coming out of his class. I believe the reviewer that says the website is a main resource, he points us to the class site all the time with no helpful information, and because he can't answer the questions himself on the spot. Are you buying a book or a website? I think that's all the helpful information I have for now.

5 out of 5 stars How to learn and use MATLAB quickly!.......2002-11-03

Excellent source for all people who don't have time to study MATLAB in-depth. A lot of useful examples help anyone to create his/her own code in no time!

5 out of 5 stars Great self teaching tool.......2002-01-03

In this text the author chooses MATLAB as the tool in running computer-based optimization problems. This approach clearly covers all levels of optimization, and the book further supports this coverage through many helpful examples that balance theory with the application. The open-ended problems that are provided are a helpful mechanism for reinforcing the lessons of the text. The website that is a companion to the book, helped me access the reference links to the MATLAB software and the author's own personal site. This web site is a true lifeline to the book.

    4 out of 5 stars Supplemental Text.......2007-05-25

This book was recommended by a professor as a good supplemental text. So far, I have been glad I bought it. The main text is very good, but very technical. This book helps to fill in some of the holes that come up.

It is quite bright and colorful inside, and not what I expected. It is easy to read and demonstrates how to get started using MATLAB.

5 out of 5 stars Great from Basic to Advance.......2005-09-17

This is a great book for learning Matlab. It starts from very, very basic stuff, and picks up at a steady pace, teaching u tons of things with ease. This is the official book of my College Course "Computer Programming for Mechanical Engineers", and I'm doing great in it with the help of this book.

4 out of 5 stars A good first book for beginners.......2002-08-24

I am not a full time computer programmer. In spite of my limited programming experience, I was able to follow the lessons in this book. The information is presented in a logical sequence and fully explained and illustrated. As the title suggests, this book is for engineers who need answers for their own use and is not intended to show you how to make fancy illustrations for presentations.
There are two shortcomings that bothered me. One is the lack of a table at the end of each chapter listing the other commands and functions that do almost the same thing as the ones covered in the chapter. This would increase this book's usefulness as a reference. The other problem is the end of each chapter having an illustration of some interesting engineering project or concept. One claimed that Matlab could be used to drastically improve the fuel efficiency of motor vehicles. The other was a half baked political statement to the effect that you would be better off giving irrevocable control of your life over to a group of people who have a history of looking after their own interests first and others second. Of course this suggestion was worded in an appealing style.

3 out of 5 stars It Could be Better........2000-11-03

The book is a good start to MATLAB students but there is a lot of errors in the text. Despite the author's appeal asking everybody to show him the errors, I think it would be better to rewrite the book, mainly because his work could be more useful if he insert a specific chapter about I/O operations, which is, in my opinion, the most dificult thing to do in MATLAB. Examples of I/O operations with several data formats would be useful too.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2000-10-29

This is a great text. Easy to read and many good examples illustrated in the book allow you to quickly pick up MATLAB, especially the GUI section. It's very clear and up-to-date. Unlike some other texts just tell you the inefficient Matlab 4.x code for the GUI programing.
