The moral case for the free market.......2007-09-14
For anyone interested in an economic case for capitalism, this is not the right book - Rand was a philosopher, not an economist (in spite of her sound understanding of economic theorems.) However, for anyone interested in a moral defence of the system and an understanding of its intellectual history and opponents, this is a vital piece of work. Rand includes essays on voluminous topics, such as the gold standard, distortions of what actually happened during the Industrial Revolution, the proper role of government (I disagree with her on this), and so on. It is essential to understand that Rand was not a corporate shill, nor did she approve of the status quo - to the contrary, she strongly opposed the notion of corporate welfare and the like, and believed in a free market economy. Unfortunately, her adulation of big business gave ample ammunition to her critics. She replicates her essay on the rights of individuals toward the end of the book, which is in itself an excellent read. Taken in conjunction with The Virtue of Selfishness, this work will spur the youthful mind into further inquiry on the philosophical origins and defences of laissez-faire.
AMAZON! PLEASE READ THIS.......2007-07-17
Can you please take down that disgraceful "editorial review" you've allowed to creep its slimy way onto this site (and somehow barnes and nobles as well? who is pushing this stuff?). It is a smear on this book's page, and frankly it makes your site look tawdry and muckraking.
Unless of course, you posted that review to get all of these wonderful reviews defending the author of this book from attack by its own salesman.
Take that review down and replace it with something neutral at the very least.
Really, its almost criminal.
Very well written book about capitalism and democracy.......2007-04-06
Although this book was written many years ago, it rings true for today's issues. The book is made up of multiple (25 or so) mini essays, each about 5-10 pages long.
The book has a clear and logical philosophy that is consistent. Its' basic premise is that pure capitalism is the first and only moral system for man. This is because capitalism equals freedom which frees a man from coercive oppression, and that man can only create wealth and new ideas when free to use his mind. The book states that the US briefly came close to pure capitalism in the 1700 and 1800s, but is now heading to fascism, as the state leaves property in private ownership, but the state controls output and use of the private property.
This book is the best I've read in several years, because it helped me unify my outlook on several fronts (political, economic, legal, social, etc) into one grand, consistent theory. I think this book will appeal to liberals and conservatives alike. Both are damned in this book by Rand, but I think the left, right, and center will recognize parts of Rand's philosophy that are dear to them too.
Read it for yourself to see, the book is cheap.
Propaganda?.......2007-04-06
The only "outlandish piece of propaganda" about this book is the Library Journal's unabashed hit-piece pseudo-review of it on this website. The essence of capitalism is a political-economic system based on individual rights where all property is owned privately. If you wish to engage in thought about the authentic meaning of capitalism, read Ayn Rand's articles in this book, then if you decide to reject capitalism for statism, do so with the full knowledge of what capitalism is and be prepared to take the consequences for selling your soul.
greenspan.......2007-04-05
this book with its essays by greenspan show a good example of a guy who used to fight against courruption & the federal reserve and then sold out to those who battled against.
Our money was taken from us in the middle of the night by corrupt bankers. The federal Reserve is bogus.

what planet is she on?.......2007-05-30
I received this as a thoughtful gift when ending a mental health internship and while I tried many of the things in the book, my path to my "ideal" private practice did not even remotely approach her rosy outlook. Get on insurance panels if you want clients; this ideal client stuff is really for people who already have their names out there. Don't waste your money unless you want to exist in the same ether-world she lives in.
great! .......2007-03-09
very useful in starting a new practice; because it is a workbook, you do not just "read" it. it requires you to think about what you want for your practice, set a plan, and make it work!

Goldmine of ideas for private practice.......2004-07-16
I have her earlier book, "Building Your Ideal Private Practice," which I love. This workbook reviews some of that but goes much further and offers many new ideas and some cutting edge concepts. Its very useful for those of us in private practice who need marketing and business help from someone who has been there, done that. Lynn is a therapist and business coach, so she is in a perfect place to help the rest of us. I went to one of her workshops, and then got this workbook. This workbook is very well organized, takes you through a plan month by month, adds a lot of concepts. I especailly loved the last sections, that looked at a developmental model for understanding the evolution of your practice over time.

Dated but brilliant.......2005-07-24
There is a canard that to not know history it to be doomed to repeat it. Usually I have found that most people who read history do so in a manner that distorts it to fit their own views on contemporary issues (Newt Gingrich is a good example of this). This is not necessarily a bad thing but the reader should be self-aware.
There is some truth to the canard. It is impossible to read in early American history without realizing that many of the same issues that the founding generations dealt with are still being played out in the political arena.
I came to this book because I was looking for detailed background on the historical evolution of the jury, especially in regards to jury nullification. Over and over again in the ratification debates, various founders discuss the need for the jury to be able to decide on the law itself not just the facts of the case.
Abramson gives an excellent succinct discussion of the history, as well as the history of other aspects of the jury's role; e.g., the unanimous verdict, preemptory challenges and the application of the death penalty.
What makes these discussions particularly incisive (ironic?) is that Abramson contrasts our historical realities with an ideal of jury deliberation.
In his ideal type, the jury is a model of deliberative democracy. People bring to their jury duty the sum total of their knowledge and experience and work together to fashion a unanimous verdict based on a worked out sense of community justice. Abramson, I believe, regards this model as the ideal that juries have striven for over the centuries. One aspect of this ideal that he emphasizes is that it is only on a jury that most of us get to actually participate in the act of governance.
As a juror, I decide when and how to apply the law to my fellow citizens. At that moment, I am the government.
Abramson adds a new touch to this by insisting that jurors as members of the various groups that make up their identities (gender, class, religion, ethnicity, etc.) bring to the deliberation the different points of views that represents those groups. As long as we don't act as blind voting blocks for those groups but still listen, debate and decide together, we are still living up to the democratic ideal of the jury.
Abramson's discussion is incredibly rich. I will detail one further aspect of it in order (I hope) to whet your appetite.
In regards to jury nullification, Abramson makes an useful distinction. We may no longer have a legal right to nullify the law when on a jury (Sparf and Hansen v. United States, 1895) but we always have the power to do so. Jury nullification continues to occur (I would argue that the only way to understand the OJ Simpson verdict is as an instance of nullification). Abramson wants us to face up to this reality. We should instruct juries as to their power to nullify. His main argument for this is that nullification works only to an acquittal, not to convict (p. 92). In this I think he is a bit naive or relying on a bit of definitional legerdemain. Juries can and will decide to ignore a judge's instruction about the admissability of evidence and will on occassion convict someone on the basis of evidence they are not supposed to consider. This can only not be considered nullification by definition. But, like Abramsom, I am willing to take the leap on nullfication because I simply believe in the American people as a whole to try to get things right.
My main complaint against the book is of a different order entirely. This is a book that is badly in need of a second edition. Not one that has the new preface that the other reviewer mentions but a complete updating of the evidence, examples and discussion.
The first edition came out as the OJ trial was dominating our scandelmongering press and there is much that has changed in our legal system since then. I would love to reread this book in a up-to-date edition.
Until such time of grace, I cannot recommend this present edition highly enough. Abramson has taught me an enormous amount about our legal system. Whether arguing for unanimous verdicts or against preemptory challenges he is learned, thoughtful and fair to all sides. And, as always, I am made hopeful but the writing of someone who really believes in what we can be as a democratic people.
In fact, perhaps the praise I should be paying to the author is that he lives up to his own ideal of deliberative democracy. So should we all.
Finally back in print.......2000-10-27
It's a relief to see Prof. Abramson's fine volume on juries back in print. One of the most important books on juries written in recent years, Abramson looks at the political role of juries and makes several original observations that are in themselves worth the price of admission. This is the sort of book that is appropriate for lawyers, law and graduate students and laypersons alike.
When this book originally came out in 1994, Prof. Abramson appeared at a great number of academic symposia and other events having to do with the jury system. To some extent, this book became the focal point of the current wave of interest in the jury system, much like Kalven and Zeisel's "The American Jury" did in the 1960's. The updated preface appears to be the result of the interactions and dialogues Prof. Abramson developed with other serious jury researchers as a result of these experiences. That said, let's hope that the book remains in print for some time.

Derrick Knows How to Master the Media.......2007-03-14
There are many consultants in the financial services industry who can help you. However, very few are also actively producing themselves. Derrick Kinney is one of them. He writes from experience and by following his ideas, you will master the media and build an impenetrable brand in your market. Read the book. Implement the ideas. Take good care of your clients. If you follow those three steps, your business will soar.
Wonderful Book ! A Must For anyone looking for new clients........2005-12-30
I've been a financial planner for eighteen years and have read a lot of books on developing business. Master The Media is, hands-down, the best I've read. After, implementing Derrick's ideas I had a half-page article written about me, several short pieces in the 'Professionals on the Move' section of the paper, and a TV appearance in studio. More importantly, this has resulted in new clients and several calls for appointments. Derrick not only provides everything a financial planner needs to break into the media but he also has excellent chapters on how to land and maintain the new high net worth clients you get from your PR work. His methods have become one of the main ways I will market my firm.

As a senior business consultant, keeping in tune with business literature is a must. Rarely is a release worthy of such accolades. Derrick Kinney has written a literary masterpiece. Mr. Kinney's approach is clear, concise, and an absolute must read for those businesses attempting to master their media presence. Mr. Kinney's savvy approach for the financial professional is multi-dimensional, yet not weighed down in its intellectual approach. His personal success is a testament to this full proof strategy of mastering the media. This book is not a "must read," it is "required reading."

nursing homes from a physical therapist's perspective.......2004-08-29
This book is somewhat informative about internal pressures in nursing homes and how they work. For instance, she relates how a physical therapist may be pressured to let less qualified people actually do the work and sign off on it.
But her perspective is pretty exclusively that of a physical therapist and of old people whose conditions CAN improve. This is not everyone and the geriatric nurse perspective she criticizes is actually more humane for many people.
She has some good suggestions on things to look at, people to talk to, and questions to ask of a nursing home, but if you are going to get only one book on the topic, this would not be it.
