Book Description
Approaching computational statistics through its theoretical aspects can be daunting. Often intimidated or distracted by the theory, researchers and students can lose sight of the actual goals and applications of the subject. What they need are its key concepts, an understanding of its methods, experience with its implementation, and practice with computational software. Focusing on the computational aspects of statistics rather than the theoretical, Computational Statistics Handbook with MATLAB uses a down-to-earth approach that makes statistics accessible to a wide range of users. The authors integrate the use of MATLAB throughout the book, allowing readers to see the actual implementation of algorithms, but also include step-by-step procedures to allow implementation with any suitable software. The book concentrates on the simulation/Monte Carlo point of view, and contains algorithms for exploratory data analysis, modeling, Monte Carlo simulation, pattern recognition, bootstrap, classification, cross-validation methods, probability density estimation, random number generation, and other computational statistics methods. Emphasis on the practical aspects of statistics, details of the latest techniques, and real implementation experience make the Computational Statistics Handbook with MATLAB more than just the first book to use MATLAB to solve computational problems in statistics. It also forms an outstanding, introduction to statistics for anyone in the many disciplines that involve data analysis.

Great hands on hanbook.......2007-01-11
Up to the point - great to have on the shelf for quick consultations. It makes a great textbook to be complemented with specialized papers on the different topics. A must have for anyone doing computational Statistics in Matlab. "Exploratory Data Analysis with MATLAB" by Wendy L. Martinez, Angel R. Martinez is a great follow up volume to this book.
Good Book for me..........2004-06-18
There were a lot of negative comments for this book on Amazon so I sort of held off the purchase of this book. However, last week I ordered the book and quickly realised it is very useful. The book may lack detailed theory but excellent references are scattered throughout if you really want to follow it up. And the book is easy reading and well written with most statistical concepts defined before they are used.
The focus of this book primarily is to explain how to work on statistics using Matlab and it provides a taste of various areas with adequate explanations and code to get started. One advantage of this book is they do not define their own notation but use the notation which is currently in vogue in academia.
If you are starting out in Matlab, are not a statistician and do not have previous experience with other packages (like Splus or R) you should definetly think about getting a copy. If you are a Stats Guru you can just read the toolbox documentation. However note that these authors provide their additional stats toolbox FREE (which is also well written) on the website which contains most of Matlab statistical functions so you could save yourself some money on the Stats toolbox.
Disappointing.......2002-10-11
I think there would be a real interest in a book on "computational statistics" and related topics that showed details of analyses and algorithms using Matlab. This book is expensive and extremely disappointing. The explanations are sparse and very weak and the m.files are usually small add-ons to functions from the Stats Toolbox.
I think in any book on this topic there have to be detailed explanations of how methods work and what their limitations are.Otherwise the reader can find themselves in a lot of trouble very quickly. There is insufficient detail either for a student coming to the topics for the first time or for someone actually wanting to analyse data.
Other books that people might want to have a look at:
1)Statistical Pattern Recognition 2nd edition . Andrew Webb. This is not oriented to any particular language.Good introduction.
2)Netlab. Ian Nabney (this has excellent Matlab functions for neural networks)
3)Modern applied statistics with S 4th edition, Venables and Ripley. This uses a different language (but which will be relatively easy for Matlab users to learn), but learning S or R (free!) makes a huge number of tools available.
4)The recent data mining book by Hand et al. This offers clear and cogent explanations. It is good for someone who does not want overly mathematical descriptions.
I haven't looked properly at the recent Hastie,Friedman and Tibishirani book yet, but you can find reviews on the Amazon page for the book.
Not very useful.......2002-08-28
My major complain was that the authors, in general, did not present algorithms clearly. Limit selections of algorithms did not help either. As a result, you cannot use this book as a reference because it just does not contain enough material. You cannot learn much about computational statistics with this book becuase the statistic methods and algorithms are not adequately presented. you cannot even write codes for your own statistic analysis with the MATLAB examples shown in the book unless you have the Statistics Toolbox.
The only persons that might be benefit from this book are those who don't want to read the Statistics Toolbox manual on line. Given that the Mathworks no longer ship printed manuals, this book may be used a companion of the Statistics Toolbox.
sloppy writing.......2002-07-10
I ordered this book assuming to get something useful, but i got the impression while reading the book that it is like a collection of notes from other books, wrapped with some matlab code. More worrying to me was that the mathematics makes a sloppy impression. For me that means I cannot grab the book to lookup something and use the code without having to be concerned on the validity. The bottomline being I will not use it for applications and the book is a waste of money.

Good Text, Major Problems with Matlab Tools.......2007-05-04
Taken by itself, this is a good solid text on its subject matter, both during the learning process and as a later reference for a working engineer (which I am - with 35 years of experience). However, the Matlab "toolbox" is significantly flawed. First, the tools are presented as p-code, not m-scripts, and therefore serve no teaching function whatsoever, and cannot be customized by the user. There is no logical reason for this from a protection standpoint since there is no copy-protection on the disk and thus, at least physically, the files can be just as freely distributed as if they were m-scripts. Even toolboxes purchased from MathWorks generally contain most of their tools as user readable m-scripts. Because they're not user readable, and therefore not verifiable, the Matlab tools on the CD cannot be used in any quality sensitive "real-world" engineering computation. Another toolbox problem is that it is divided into chapter-related folders and tool names are repeated in different folders - requiring in many cases completely incompatible syntax for the different versions - all with the same name. If the wrong syntax is used, the routines fail cryptically, not gracefully. Finally, no help messages are built into the tools (eg. the standard Matlab syntax "help setbeam" does NOT produce any info about the setbeam routine - of which there are at least four incompatible versions). This is definitely not standard practice for Matlab toolboxes and is definitely not user friendly. The author's website does not appear - at this writing anyway - to have any updates or corrections for the toolbox routines. So if you purchase this book, do so for the book itself, not the toolboxes which seem so promising in concept.
Outstanding handbook on engineering principles.......2006-01-11
This book is an extremely useful tool and really is an excellent handbook on providing information on the fundamentals of strength of materials, structural mechanics, and structural dynamics. Furthermore, the book also provides information on two-dimensional continua that is not commonly found in most engineering handbooks today, as far as I am aware. The accompanying matlab codes allow the user to quickly arrive at the closed form solution to a variety of problems such as simple one-degree of freedom systems all the way up to more complecated two-dimensional continua such as the dynamic characteristics of membranes and plates. In addition, the matlab code lends itself to being advantages to the designer during the research and development phase on a project when a quick solution is required of a variety of conceptual structural configurations. Of particular interest is the associated website maintained by the author that provides supplemental information on the use of the matlab code in engineering analysis demos.
I would recommend this book to those in academia and industry looking to obtain a handbook on the basics of engineering principles that are commonly used in everyday engineering problems.
Dr. Yang's Book on Stress, Strain and Structural Dynamics.......2005-04-25
Dr. Yang's newly released book "Stress, Strain and Structural Dynamics" contains a substantial quantity (with 960 pages) of diverse, high-quality material on strength of materials, structural mechanics, dynamics and vibrations, structural dynamics, and two-dimensional elastic continua. The integration of the development of principles, formulas and solutions with Matlab, the high-performance technical computing language, reflects the current state of engineering education, research and development. The accompanying CD-ROM contains nearly 300 self-written functions by the author, which allows the users to not only obtain the solutions but also visualize the responses instantly. Structures covered in the interactive handbook range from simple single degree of freedom system to sophisticated two-dimensional elastic continua. As a result, it is an excellent resource for undergraduate and graduate engineering students, practical engineers and researchers. It deserves a place in all academic and specialist libraries as well as engineering professionals' bookshelves.
In addition, what's nice about this book, as I recently found out, is that the author maintains a website for the book:
http://ame-www.usc.edu/books/yang-sssd/
From this website, one can get a lot of information on what this book is about, how to use the Matlab functions of the book in engineering analysis via carefully selected demo examples, technical supports, updates, and beyond. This, from a reader's viewpoint, really helps amplifying the utilities of the book.
The Beauty of the Art "Static & Dynamic Structural Handbook".......2005-04-24
I found this user-friendly handbook provides me a very good visual enhancement by its animated simulation with its solution can be extended to solving real practical engineering and research problems.
This handbook can solve any static problems (freshman level problems) up to complex structural dynamics problems (Senior and Graduate level problems) within few seconds by typing in the material properties with its addition feature of some visualization of control systems analysis.
I highly recommended this handbook to all engineering undergrad students (this handbook also very useful to Physics major students and two year college students especially studying in Mechanics problems), researchers and design engineers who wants to get a quick analysis and simulations of their design products that involved statics and dynamic problems.
For further simulation toolboxes updates and information about this handbook, you can access as follow:

Excellent Book on Structural Dynamics.......2005-04-22
As a researcher and instructor of structural dynamics and vibration courses, I found this book is an excellent reference for professional engineers as well as textbook for engineering students.
This book integrates the central theories of fundamental mechanics (stresses/strains, dynamics, vibration, and vibration control) and practical problem solving techniques including computer applications with Matlab. Explanations and discussions of subjects are concise, yet very clear and accurate. Examples are well-selected to demonstrate underlined principles and problem solving techniques. In addition, numerous illustrations are expertly used to clarify ideas, saving the reader from reading lines and lines of text. This book is also pedagogically well organized with a consistent approach to conclusions from objectives in each chapter.
I strongly recommend this book as a must reference for those who want to become an expert in the areas of structural dynamics and vibration.

Customer Reviews:
Good literature review, very dated absorption technology.......2003-02-06
The review of the Clean Air Act is well done. Absorption tower examples are very dated - saddles are stated to be the preferred tower packing, so the tower designed is grossly oversized with enormous pressure drop compared to what is possible with a modern packing. If you need a reference work with practical examples to pollution control towers keep looking.
Air Pollution Control Technology Handbook.......2003-02-01
If you need a reference work that summarizes the Clean Air Act then this is a good source. It is also has technically sound theoretical explanations of air pollution control. However it is a poor source if you seek suggestions for any type of current air pollution control project. The examples in the text are extremely dated and hence grossly oversized. The authors recommend that saddles be used to pack towers and then design the tower to have over 40 ft of packing. As a result their towers are much to big, much too tall and have enormously high pressure drop. Unfortunately the authors ignore (or are simply unaware of) several generations of mass transfer packing development that allow for much more practical and far less costly designs than per their examples.
Book Description
Fuel cell systems have now reached a degree of technological maturity and appear destined to form the cornerstone of future energy technologies. But the rapid advances in fuel cell system development have left current information available only in scattered journals and Internet sites. The even faster race toward fuel cell commercialization further leaves the objectivity of many Internet articles open to question. The Fuel Cell Technology Handbook is now here to help, providing the first comprehensive treatment of both the technical and commercial aspects of high and low temperature fuel cells, fuel cell systems, fuel cell catalysis, and fuel generation. The first part of the book addresses the principles of fuel cell technology and summarizes the main concepts, developments, and remaining technical problems, particularly in fueling. The second part explores applications in automotive, stationary, and portable power generation technologies. It also provides an expert's look at future developments in both the technology and its applications. With chapters contributed by experts working in academic and industrial R&D, this handbook forms a reliable, authoritative basis for understanding fuel cell technology, applications, and commercial realities. Whether you're developing fuel cell components, designing a fuel cell system, or just interested in the viability of an application, the Fuel Cell Technology Handbook is the best place to start.

Book Description
The Matlab 5 Handbook is an easily accessible reference tool and first resource for the numerical computation system MATLAB. Each MATLAB command, in both the standard library and the applications toolboxes, is described in a precise, concise, and consistent manner. Topics, including calculus, linear algebra, graphics, and more, are explained in context. The Matlab 5 Handbook begins with MATLABQuickstart, an introductory session which will help get the reader off to a flying start. Each section then begins with a practical introduction to the subject area. There is also an introduction to MATLAB programming as a whole. Each entry includes the command name, common types of parameter sequences, description, type of output to expect, additional hints and information, and extensive cross references. Everyone who uses MATLAB in more than the most cursory fashion will find this book a helpful tool, not only because of its structure, but because it combines elements previously not available in any other book or in on-line help files for MATLAB. It is fully up to date for MATLAB 5.

... and read the online documentation instead. The authors state that this handbook "adds to the online help". In a way that's correct. It may serve as a print out version of the online help if you are too lazy to click through the help desk. The latter, however, is for free.
The Matlab 5 Handbook.......2000-06-26
I found the Maltab 5 Handbook very usefull, not only with the general information such as basic operation, but also with its explanations of the Matlab toolboxes, which I found difficult to understand in the Matlab book provided with the software. Also its in depth, but step by step explanation in using the Matlab Editor for Mathematical program writing. All in all I rate this book very highly and a must for all matlab users.
