Book Description

This second edition of the widely acclaimed Geophysical Fluid Dynamics by Joseph Pedlosky offers the reader a high-level, unified treatment of the theory of the dynamics of large-scale motions of the oceans and atmosphere. Revised and updated, it includes expanded discussions of * the fundamentals of geostrophic turbulence * the theory of wave-mean flow interaction * thermocline theory * finite amplitude barocline instability. From the reviews: "The author has done a masterful job in presenting the theory with the necessary mathematical foundation, while keeping the physical aspects in clear view...it is an outstanding introduction to a complex and important subject." Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My beloved book on GFD.......2006-03-07

Pedlosky's GFD book is a true classic. Its treatment of the core issues is precise and there is an excellent balance between the mathematical derivations and the discussions on the physical processes. One needs to have some background in classical fluid dynamics and applied mathematics (especially integral transformations, Fourier analysis, complex variables and PDE's) to truely appreciate the book but it can be potentially helpful to anyone who is interested in rotating stratified fluids and is eager to learn.

5 out of 5 stars Intuition First.......2001-06-11

All the math in the world would be useless in any applied subject without physical intuition about the phenomena and a clear passage between the intuition and the math. Pedlosky's book has it all - intuition and math. I have loved studying it as my first step in the direction of geophysics from a career in pure mathematics. The book is clear, easy to read, interesting, fascinating. Thank you Pedlosky for a magnificent textbook.

5 out of 5 stars GFD Bible.......2000-11-09

If you trully want to understand geophysical fluid dynamics (ocean/atmosphere) you can not avoid this great book. I strongly suggest it, specially if you are a graduate student going through a GFD course. Years from now you will still go back to Pedlosky to clarify your doubts.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for oceanographers and meteorologists........1996-12-10

Boy, I wish this book had been out when I was in grad school! (Physical oceanography). This is an essential work for the shelf of anyone interested in dynamic meteorology or oceanography. Well organized, thorough, and easy to follow (at least for the intended audience.)

Topology control is fundamental to solving scalability and capacity problems in large-scale wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. Forthcoming wireless multi-hop networks such as ad hoc and sensor networks will allow network nodes to control the communication topology by choosing their transmitting ranges. Briefly, topology control (TC) is the art of co-ordinating nodes decisions regarding their transmitting ranges, to generate a network with the desired features. Building an optimized network topology helps surpass the prevalent scalability and capacity problems. Topology Control in Wireless Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks makes the case for topology control and provides an exhaustive coverage of TC techniques in wireless ad hoc and sensor networks, considering both stationary networks, to which most of the existing solutions are tailored, and mobile networks. The author introduces a new taxonomy of topology control and gives a full explication of the applications and challenges of this important topic. Topology Control in Wireless Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks: Defines topology control and explains its necessity, considering both stationary and mobile networks. Describes the most representative TC protocols and their performance.

              Book Description

"Are there common phenomena and laws in the dynamic behavior of granular materials, traffic, and socio-economic systems?" The answers given at the international workshop "Traffic and Granular Flow '99" are presented in this volume. From a physical standpoint, all these systems can be treated as (self)-driven many-particle systems with strong fluctuations, showing multistability, phase transitions, non-linear waves, etc. The great interest in these systems is due to several unexpected new discoveries and their practical relevance for solving some fundamental problems of today's societies. This includes intelligent measures for traffic flow optimization and methods from "econophysics" for stabilizing (stock) markets.

                Book Description

Fluids, play an important role in environmental systems, appearing as surface water in rivers, lakes, and coastal regions or in the subsurface as well as in the atmosphere. Mechanics of environmental fluids is concerned with fluid motion, associated mass and heat transport in addition to deformation processes in subsurface systems. In this textbook the fundamental modelling approaches based on continuum mechanics for fluids in the environment are described, including porous media and turbulence. Numerical methods for solving the process governing equations and its object-oriented computer implementation are discussed and illustrated with examples. Finally the application of computer models in civil and environmental engineering is demonstrated.

                  Book Description

Debris flows are among the most frequent and destructive of all geomorphic processes, mainly affecting mountainous areas in a range of morphoclimatic environments, and the damage they cause is often devastating. Increased anthropisation calls for improvements in the criteria used to identify debris-flow risk areas and the prevention measures adopted.

One of the main difficulties encountered by the approaches illustrated in previous literature is linked to their possible validation either in the field or in a laboratory environment.

The choice of a rheological model is extremely important. This book provides methodological details, which can be applied to investigations on debris-flow mechanics, capable of providing an accurate representation of the phenomenology.
