Book Description

This guide book to mathematics contains in handbook form the fundamental working knowledge of mathematics which is needed as an everyday guide for working scientists and engineers, as well as for students. Easy to understand, and convenient to use, this guide book gives concisely the information necessary to evaluate most problems which occur in concrete applications. For the 4th edition, the concept of the book has been completely re-arranged. The new emphasis is on those fields of mathematics that became more important for the formulation and modeling of technical and natural processes, namely Numerical Mathematics, Probability Theory and Statistics, as well as Information Processing.

I highly recommend the Handbook of Mathematics. It is an excellent resource for every engineering student and professional engineer.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but tough to use.......2007-04-25

This handbook contains more material than I find in any other single source that I happen to have. But I don't use it as frequently as I use the analogous CRC handbook, or MathWorld and Wikipedia on the Web, or the ancient NBS handbook. Why not? Because one uses a handbook, not as a textbook, but as a source for things one should know, but don't (or perhaps once knew but have forgotten). So one wants to find the thing one is looking for, refresh or extend one's memory, and then put the handbook aside and go back to the problem one is trying to solve. I have trouble locating what I'm looking for in Bronshtein and Semendayev, and when I find it, I often find that I have to look up things elsewhere in the volume to get all of whatever it is I was looking for. So I try my other sources first, and if they don't answer my question, I pick up this book, resignedly, and expect to spend hours rather than minutes getting whatever it is I want to know. There is nothing wrong with that; indeed, this book often supplies me with answers to questions I can't find answered elsewhere.

In case the reader of this review attributes my difficulties with this book to a lack of mathematical background, I'll remark that my academic training, very many years ago, was in math, so I find that I can follow the discussion in this book of any particular thing I look up; it's just a slow process for me. I'm not surprised that it's a favorite in Germany (and in Europe more generally); Europeans in their mathematical training are expected to deal with tough subjects by dogged persistence, and probably feel more comfortable with this style than I do, given my US background. So, overall, it's a book I couldn't do without, but hate having to spend time in.

5 out of 5 stars Loaded with Content.......2005-02-25

This book is exactly what the title says it is; a handbook of mathematical techniques and formulas for scientists and engineers. It is more a handbook than a book on mathematics and assumes a prior knowledge on the subjects covered. Readers of this english version of the Bronshtein should take note that it is a "raw" translation of the german version and so some discussion may not do justice to the theory. This in no way takes away from the fact it is an exceptional book and you'd be hard pressed to find any other book with more mathematical content.

3 out of 5 stars There are several Bronshteins.......2004-10-25

Bronstein's "Taschenbuch der Mathematik" is a longtime favorite among german science and engineering students. English language readers should be aware however, that there are numerous different editions of this book. Not only were the german editions constantly enlarged and reworked, but there were also two publishers of the same book, one in East Germany (Teubner Verlag), one in West Germany (Harri Deutsch Verlag). Today both of these publishers sell a "Taschenbuch der Mathematik" based on the original Bronstein, yet they are completely different books. The english edition by Springer Verlag advertised above is based on the current Harri Deutsch edition. An english translation of the Teubner edition is now available as the "Oxford Users' Guide to Mathematics" from Oxford University Press. It is mostly considered to be the better 'Bronstein' (even though Teubner and OUP have dropped his name because the new edition was completely rewritten by E. Zeidler).

5 out of 5 stars Clasic.......2004-03-22

For me it was a remarkable fact, how few of the people in western countries have heard about this handbook. In the east this is probably the most popular mathematical handbook ever. I dont know any eastern european scientist in a field of mathematics, engineering and physics who don't have it. The main reason is it's extensivity and usefulness. In Croatian print it has about 1000 pages in very small format covering all possible parts of applied mathematics up to special functions/markov chains/complex integration/vector algebra. It's "allways in backpack book" and my hot recomandation to any technical scientist.

    Book Description

The subject of sparse matrices has its roots in such diverse fields as management science, power systems analysis, surveying, circuit theory, and structural analysis. Mathematical models in all these areas give rise to very large systems of linear equations which could not be solved were it not for the fact that the matrices contain relatively few non-zero entries. Only comparatively recently, in the last fifteen years or so, has it become apparent that the equations can be solved even when the pattern is irregular, and it is primarily the solution of such problems that is considered in this book. The subject is intensely practical and this book is written with practicalities ever in mind. Whenever two methods are applicable, their rival merits are considered, and conclusions are based on practical experience where theoretical comparison is not possible. Non-numeric computing techniques have been included, as well as frequent illustrations, in an attempt to bridge the usually wide gap between the printed page and the working computer code. Despite this practical bias, it is recognized that many aspects of the subject are of interest in their own right, and the book aims to be suitable also for a student course, probably at M.Sc. level. Exercises have been included to illustrate and strengthen understanding of the material, as well as to extend it. Efficient use of sparsity is a key to solving large problems in many fields. This book will supply both insight and answers for those attempting to solve these problems.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars excellent book.......2004-01-31

This book covers direct sparse matrix techniques developed
up to 1986. It's slightly outdated, since this field
experienced great changes -- especially in the early and
mid 90s a lot of new methods were developed.

However, it's a still a pretty book for beginners who want
to know this field. It's pitty that Amazon does not have it.
The good new is that you can buy the book directly from the publisher at www.us.oup.com/us/ for $55.

      Book Description

Based on a graduate course taught at Utrecht University, this book provides a short introduction to the theory of Foliations and Lie Groupoids to students who have already taken a first course in differential geometry. Ieke Moerdijk and Janez Mrcun include detailed references to enable students to find the requisite background material in the research literature. The text features many exercises and worked examples.

      Download Description

This book gives a quick introduction to the theory of foliations, Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids. An important feature is the emphasis on the interplay between these concepts: Lie groupoids form an indispensable tool to study the transverse structure of foliations as well as their noncommutative geometry, while the theory of foliations has immediate applications to the Lie theory of groupoids and their infinitesimal algebroids. The book starts with a detailed presentation of the main classical theorems in the theory of foliations then proceeds to Molino's theory, Lie groupoids, constructing the holonomy groupoid of a foliation and finally Lie algebroids. Among other things, the authors discuss to what extent Lie's theory for Lie groups and Lie algebras holds in the more general context of groupoids and algebroids. Based on the authors' extensive teaching experience, this book contains numerous examples and exercises making it ideal for graduate students and their instructors.

        Book Description

Vol. 1 of Lars Hörmander's influential 4-volume treatise is a detailed exposition of the theory of distributions.

        From the reviews:

"In order to illustrate the richness of the book: in my review of the 1983 edition [...] I gave a list of 20 subjects which were new compared to Hörmander's book of 1963. Most of these subjects concern important, basic and highly nontrivial theorems in analysis. Hörmander's treatment of these is extremely clear and efficient and often highly original. [...] Most of the exercises are witty, with an interesting point. The phrasing of both the exercises and the answers and hints is very careful [...] In all, the book can be highly recommended, both as a textbook for advanced students, and as background and reference for introductory courses on distributions and Fourier analysis."

5 out of 5 stars the definitive guide to micro-local analysis.......2000-04-05

Hormander's four volume guide to linear partial differential operators is the definitive guide to smooth micro-local analysis from the man who invented a large fraction of it.

Micro-local analysis is an approach to the analysis of singularities of variable coefficient linear partial differential equations based on the use of the Fourier transform and of symplectic geometry. Ideas from Hamiltonian physics and quantum theory also feature heavily. The fact that the subject is a mixture of analysis and geometry makes it beautiful and powerful.

The four volume set is hard work and in some ways is more useful as a reference work than as a learning book but on the other hand, all the material is there and the books do reward the reader who is willing to spend the time to study them carefully.

The first volume is the most accessible and the second paperback edition carries the added benefit of included exercises with partial answers which are often highly informative.

          Book Description

This book constitutes nothing less than an up-to-date survey of the whole field of topology (with the exception of "general (set-theoretic) topology"), or, in the words of Novikov himself, of what was termed at the end of the 19th century "Analysis Situs", and subsequently diversified into the various subfields of combinatorial, algebraic, differential, homotopic, and geometric topology. It gives an overview of these subfields, beginning with the elements and proceeding right up to the present frontiers of research. Thus one finds here the whole range of topological concepts from fibre spaces, CW-complexes, homology and homotopy, through bordism theory and K-theory to the Adams-Novikov spectral sequence, and an exhaustive (but necessarily concentrated) survey of the theory of manifolds. An appendix sketching the recent impressive developments in the theory of knots and links and low-dimensional topology generally, brings the survey right up to the present. This work is the flagship of the topology subseries of the Encyclopaedia.

          Book Description

"Most introductory statistics books ignore or give little attention to resampling methods, and thus another generation learns the less than optimal methods of statistical analysis. Good attempts to remedy this situation by writing an introductory text that focuses on resampling methods, and he does it well." — Ron C. 4 out of 5 stars Good book, poor value.......2007-03-26

I liked the book, and bought Good's "Common errors in statistics", but "Resampling methods" went straight back to Amazon. It is too introductory for my needs - which is to say, I am past college - and overpriced. Consider Efron and Tibshirani (1993), and be sure to check out the outstanding 'Applying Contemporary Statistical Techniques' by Wilcox.

5 out of 5 stars review of a review for this book.......2006-03-03

I really want to write a review of a review. One of the reviews suggest that "Bootstrap Methods A Practitioner's Guide" by Chernick is a better source for the material offered by this book. My response to that is you've got to be kidding. I've got Chernick's book and you'd need a psychic to learn anything from it. If you're trying to decide between Good's book and Chernicks please pick Good's.

4 out of 5 stars much improved second edition.......2002-02-20

I wrote a very critical review of the first edition. As the author states in his review, this edition is much improved and has benefitted from past criticism. The treatment of permutation methods is particularly good as that is the author's specialty. The coverage of the bootstrap has been improved and there are now many useful references cited.

Chapter 10 is particularly noteworthy as the author has gone to great pains to point out the many important practical issues in model building and model validation. It does however miss some coverage of bootstrap developments in this area particularly the work of Gong. Also the author has a distain for order determination method like Mallows' Cp or information criteria such as those of Akaike, Swartz and Rissanen. I do not share this distain and think that such methods should not have been omitted from the discussion.

The first edition had a very poorly written chapter on classification and clustering. Some of the important ideas from that chapter were embedded into the new model building chapter. Bootstrap bias adjustment is not treated and seems to be a blatant omission given that a section on classification is presented in Chapter 10. But the author's aim is to touch on many interesting topics where resampling can help and he avoids the complications that would be required from an in-depth treatment. This strategy helps him keep the level of the text elementary. He does provide a large number of references for the reader who wants to learn more.

          5 out of 5 stars ..........2002-01-15

All three of the reviews featured here apply only to the first edition. In fact, many of the changes incorporated in this second edition were inspired by these reviews of the first. Hopefully, you'll read the book, profit by its focus on applications and the ease with which you pick up new concepts and write a review for... of this new edition.

3 out of 5 stars well written but simplistic.......2000-08-04

This text tries to give an introduction and some guidelines to practitioners who wish to use resampling methods. It covers primarily the bootstrap and permutation methods. For more details on permutations see Good's other book "Permutation Tests". This is also intended for an introductory course in resampling methods. Quality varies from chapter to chapter. The chapter on classification and clustering is weak and not well researched. Most other chapters are much better. The book is very popular with those that want a thumbnail sketch of the methods. For the bootstrap, the monograph by Mooney and Duval is also good. My book on bootstrap is popular with practitioners and provides a wealth of references. A good introduction to both the bootstrap and the permutation methods can be found in Manly's text "Randomization, Bootstrap and Monte Carlo Methods in Biology". This review applies to the first edition of the text only. There are substantial improvements in the second edition that I mention in a separate review.

          5 out of 5 stars Tremendous Book.......2001-05-02

After six years in the military, I went back to school. Admittedly, my math skills were not as sharp as they should have been. Applied Algebra I, took me step by step through begining Algebra. Very well thought out, one section builds on the next. I would recommend this book for any student starting out in Algebra or as a refresher course for those individuals looking to tune up their skills. Very well done!!

            Book Description

Advances in Shannon's Sampling Theory provides an up-to-date discussion of sampling theory, emphasizing the interaction between sampling theory and other branches of mathematical analysis, including the theory of boundary-value problems, frames, wavelets, multiresolution analysis, special functions, and functional analysis. The author not only traces the history and development of the theory, but also presents original research and results that have never before appeared in book form. Recent techniques covered include the Feichtinger-Gröchenig sampling theory; frames, wavelets, multiresolution analysis and sampling; boundary-value problems and sampling theorems; and special functions and sampling theorems. The book will interest graduate students and professionals in electrical engineering, communications, and applied mathematics.
