Customer Reviews:
Very useful book - faulty cover!.......2007-09-01
The book is a comprehensive review of 6Sigma tools and 6Sigma Project management life cycle. Hard reading. Recommended if there is no fault with the book! This suppose to be a new book from amazon.com I can not send it back as this is very heavy and I need it!!
Book " Implementing 6 sigma: Smarter solutions using statistical methods".......2007-05-26
Excellent condition of the book, as they mentioned, it arrived on time according to what the deal was, this is an excellent vendor
The must-have on every six sigma shelf.......2006-11-12
I have been using this book for the past few years and it continues to be the most valuable Six Sigma resource on my bookshelf. It is the most complete and practical Six Sigma book you will find, and worth every dollar. Every six sigma black belt I have worked with owns a copy of this book
This book is absolutely packed with useful examples - providing you with both the formulas to solve the Six Sigma tests, and also the solutions.
This is a manufacturing-centric six sigma book. If you are dedicated to service application of six sigma, I would recommend reading "Six Sigma for Transactions and Service."
If you are interested in learning about six sigma, or are a green-belt or a process improvement or enterprise modeler, this probably isn't the book for you. However if you are a black belt and apply six sigma methods on a consistent basis, this is a must-read ...
Implementing Six Sigma Review.......2006-02-28
I have read multiple books on Six Sigma, but "Implementing Six Sigma", is by far the most practical with a perfect balance of statistical concepts and everyday examples. Finally, there is a book that can show Executives, there is a better way, a true management system that links strategic objectives to bottom-line results. This book is a must for all Six Sigma practioners.
This is the only Six Sigma book you will need.......2006-02-26
This is the only Six Sigma book that covers all aspects of the methodology. You will not find another book that analyses every aspect of Six Sigma so deeply and yet, in a way that makes it so easy to understand.
As a professional of Six Sigma, I have been through every book about the subject that deserves attention but none of them comes anywhere close to Breygogle's "Implementing Six Sigma". Not only does the second edition cover the Lean methodology, but it also delves into the Theory OF Constraints and very clearly shows how it can be used for Six Sigma project selections.
No wonder why this book is the only one recommended by ASQ for their Six Sigma Black Belt preperation and no wonder why Breyfogle won the Crosby Medal.
Great book! I give it a 5 plus.

Updated to reflect contemporary practice and provide more information on management aspects of quality improvement.
Customer Reviews:
Do not buy this CRAM book........2007-01-22
If you want to understand and pass a subject, you have to read the original book (here Introduction to Statistical Quality Control by Montgomery) and try to understand the examples and the concepts in the book. In addition you have to do several exercies in this book to reinforce this understanding. Studying some outlines, highlights and notes prepared by other people won't help you much.
Sacred Book on SQC.......2007-01-12
If you are looking to be well versed on the principle of Statistical Quality Control, then you need this book.
Great SPC book.......2004-08-14
Used this book in a graduate level course on SPC. The book and the excercises were interesting and highly informative, as are all of Dr. Montgomery's numerous texts. Most concepts are backed up with liberal examples to help understand the theory and cement the concept and their practical applications, and run the whole gamut from management to electrical engineering problems. Many of the tables in the back of the book, such as the random number table, are outdated due to computers, however these may have been dropped in the new version of the text.
good book worst service.......2004-06-30
the book is very good ..no doubt but the service is aweful.
1. on the website they show it is a hardcover book and so i ordered for it but got a soft cover book ...now i have to worry about return or refunds etc...
2. had to wait for 3 weeks to get the book.
3. print quality aweful ...the original book has good color print...the one i received for the same price has a black and white print with very thin see-through pages...
my advice would be to avoid abebooks.com through amazon if possible because the same book is listed for $ 33 on their own website and here they sell it for $ 41 ...so waste ur money if u want.
Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about SPC.......2003-09-12
As the developer of the QI Macros SPC Software for Excel, customers often call with exotic questions about statistical methods for quality control.
Montgomery's book, more often than not, is the one I turn to for answers that I can't seem to find anywhere else. Even if I do find the answer in another book, it's always easier to understand in Montgomery's. The book is written in a way that makes seemingly incomprehensible statistics understandable. And there are plenty of examples.
If you're looking for a book to help you implement quality control in a small business, Montgomery's book is a bit too much, so you might consider my book on the Small Business Guerrilla Guide to Six Sigma or Six Sigma Simplified.

Book Description
Expert coverage of the design and implementation of state estimation algorithms for tracking and navigation
Estimation with Applications to Tracking and Navigation treats the estimation of various quantities from inherently inaccurate remote observations. It explains state estimator design using a balanced combination of linear systems, probability, and statistics.
The authors provide a review of the necessary background mathematical techniques and offer an overview of the basic concepts in estimation. They then provide detailed treatments of all the major issues in estimation with a focus on applying these techniques to real systems. Other features include:
- Problems that apply theoretical material to real-world applications
- In-depth coverage of the Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) estimator
- Companion DynaEst(TM) software for MATLAB(TM) implementation of Kalman filters and IMM estimators
- Design guidelines for tracking filters
Suitable for graduate engineering students and engineers working in remote sensors and tracking, Estimation with Applications to Tracking and Navigation provides expert coverage of this important area.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book on estimation/Kalman filter.......2004-09-29
I don't usually write online reviews but this book is so clear and useful that I really want to recommend it to others. It is well written with a good outline and summary for every chapter. It also has a pretty diverse range of topics on estimation, including an introductory chapter on basic estimation approaches (e.g., ML, MAP, least squares), and very practical extensions (e.g., state augmentation, square-root filters). Even though I am not in EE and some of the examples are thus not particularly helpful to me, I still find this book one of the best of all the estimation/Kalman filter books out there.
best standard book for target tracking system.......2001-05-09
I think any person who major in target tracking system related to the Kalman filter must see this book. This book present the fundamentals of state estimation theory and the tools for the design of state-of-the-art algorithms for target tracking.
The book covers the basic concepts and estimation techniques for static and dynamic systems, linear and nonlinear, as well as adaptive estiomation. This constitutes a one semester graduate course in estimation theory in an electrical/systems engineering program.
The discussion deals mainly with discrete time estimation algorithms, which are natural for digital computer implementation. The basic state estimation algorithm-the Kalman filter-is presented in discrete as well as in continuous time. The use of the estimation algorithms is illustrated on kinematic motion models because they reveal all the major issues and in particular the subtleties encountered in estimation, and this serves as an introdution to tracking.
Guidelines for tracking filter design-selection of the filter design parameters-are given and illustrated in several examples.
At the end of each chapter, a number of problems that enhance the understanding of the theory and the connection of the theoretical material to the real world are given.
And I have this book as text for my paper.

Student Solutions Manual for Devore's Probability and Statistics for Engineering and the Sciences, 7th
ASIN: 0495382175 |
Book Description
This comprehensive introduction to probability and statistics will give you the solid grounding you need no matter what your engineering specialty. Through the use of lively and realistic examples, the author helps you go beyond simply learning about statistics to actually putting the statistical methods to use. Rather than focus on rigorous mathematical development and potentially overwhelming derivations, the book emphasizes concepts, models, methodology, and applications that facilitate your understanding.
Customer Reviews:
Crummy Book.......2007-09-26
I hated reading this book. The examples really sucked. There was no way to figure out how to do the even numbered problems in the homework section because the author did not explain enough. If you can buy another book for learning statistics you should. If you can't; There is a solutions guide available. However, it is written by a different author for an earlier edition of this book. I think it was for the forth or fifth edition. The solutions guide had most of the odd numbered questions the same. You can learn a lot more from reading it than the text book.
I bought a Stastics DVD titled "Statistics" by Video Aided instruction at [...]. It was really good at teaching the concepts. Good Luck.
A Very Good Reference.......2007-09-25
This book blends theory and practice nicely. It goes beyond the "how to" just enough to help better understand the mechanics of Statistics. This is very important in engineeering because a computer can do the calculation, but it is the engineer who would make sense out of the results. Although I found several printing errors, but they did not impede my reading. I am waiting for the author to publish the new edition of Applied Statistics for Engineers. The two books would go together well.
Badly Organized, examples pointless and only add to the confusion.......2007-03-29
One of the worst features of this textbook is organization. Expect some questions to ask you to flip back to a previous question requiring you to flip thru several pages for a single question. Would it have been so difficult to rewrite out a few numbers instead of See Problem #12.
Also question numbering is completely absurd, rather than going from 1-X they for some reason carry the X to the next section example chapter 1-1 would be problems 1-20, chapter 1-2 21-30... etc it only adds to the confusion of this worthless text.
Don't expect to learn anything from the textbook the examples are difficult to understand, and avoids any problems you would expect to see in your lifetime.
One of the greatest aspects of probably and statistics is being able to calculate odds in games. Such as probably of blackjack hands, dice rolling, this textbook manages to avoid everything that has to with things like that.
A Book for a Freshmen Level College Course?.......2007-02-02
We are currently two chapter into the book and I have found the text to be nearly useless. There are solid proofs of the basic computations and examples are given. Unfortunately the formulas are extremely abstract while at the same time using mathematical jargon someone who has not taken statistics before would have little to no experience with. Some of the examples are great at helping you out on the first part of problems, but on parts c,d,e,f and g there isn't a whole lot to go off of. But as always universities never choose books based on how well it teaches a student, but normally by the number of editions the publisher puts out and the price of the book. If possible I would have a solutions manual on hand for homework.
Hard to learn from..........2006-12-22
I had this book for an undergrad web based distance learning course. We covered up to chapter 9.
This book is very hard to learn from. It seems to concentrate on explaining a lot of theory, but htere are not enough illustrations or graphs to be able to follow the discussion.
In addition, unfortunately, when you go to do the problems, very little in the discussion or the examples are helpful in figuring out what to do. The sections on probability were especially guilty in this regard.
The use of symbology is also confusing. Theta and Theta hat are thrown in to material with no explanation of what theta is representing.
The attached CD has some good interactive elements that were some help in understanding the material.

Book Description
Monte Carlo simulation has become an essential tool in the pricing of derivative securities and in risk management. These applications have, in turn, stimulated research into new Monte Carlo methods and renewed interest in some older techniques.
This book develops the use of Monte Carlo methods in finance and it also uses simulation as a vehicle for presenting models and ideas from financial engineering. It divides roughly into three parts. The first part develops the fundamentals of Monte Carlo methods, the foundations of derivatives pricing, and the implementation of several of the most important models used in financial engineering. The next part describes techniques for improving simulation accuracy and efficiency. The final third of the book addresses special topics: estimating price sensitivities, valuing American options, and measuring market risk and credit risk in financial portfolios.
The most important prerequisite is familiarity with the mathematical tools used to specify and analyze continuous-time models in finance, in particular the key ideas of stochastic calculus. Prior exposure to the basic principles of option pricing is useful but not essential.
The book is aimed at graduate students in financial engineering, researchers in Monte Carlo simulation, and practitioners implementing models in industry.
Mathematical Reviews, 2004: "... this book is very comprehensive, up-to-date and useful tool for those who are interested in implementing Monte Carlo methods in a financial context."

Review for Monte Carlo Methods... by P. Glasserman.......2007-07-16
The book is just right for a reader who is looking for state-of-the-art techniques in Monte-Carlo methods in general. The fact that the book is specific to financial systems does not limit the usability of the book in the manner it is written. There are a lots of useful references one can get out of this book.
The book is for advanced readers in the sense that it requires rigorous mathematical ability to understand all the concepts. It is by no means for a novice reader and requires background in computational mathematics.
Best financial engineering book on MC.......2007-06-29
This is like the bible of Monte Carlo methods in financing. Both a good read and a good reference book. Must have! for any quant on wall street.
good book on Monte Carlo in Finance.......2007-04-02
But it seems the author is a little focused on selling his ideas, but not a very subjective overview of all topics in M-C method in finance.
Excelent choice on finance Monte Carlo.......2007-03-08
Clear and sound theoretical background on applied Monte Carlo for finance.
Brilliant.......2006-12-26
Almost everything related to Monte Carlo in Financial Engineering is covered at just the right level of detail. Quite easy to read too.

Book Description
This applied book for engineers and scientists, written in a non-theoretical manner, focuses on underlying principles that are important in a wide range of disciplines. It emphasizes the interpretation of results, the presentation and evaluation of assumptions, and the discussion of what should be done if the assumptions are violated. Integration of spreadsheet and statistical software complete this treatment of statistics.
Chapter topics include describing and summarizing data; probability and discrete probability distributions; continuous probability distributions and sampling distributions; process control charts; estimation procedures; hypothesis testing; the design of experiments; and simple linear and multiple regression models.
For individuals interested in learning statistics—without a high level of mathematical sophistication.
Customer Reviews:
Very Practical Book.......2003-11-30
I have found this book to be very useful with practical examples and case studies. I felt that as an engineer I needed to know how to use software(to save time)along with the formulas that work in it.This book satisfies that, using a very common software EXCEL..what could be better than this.
I strongly recommend this book for a high level course in statistics.

I used this textbook for a course in statistics. I must say that it was better then the first time that I had taken statistics 5 years ago. The book uses one or two data sets per chapter that helps you focus your thoughts while learning the different techniques. A nice feature about this book that wasnt available 5 years ago is the Excel and Minitab examples which saves a lot of time that is ordinarly spent on copious number crunching. I would have given the book 5 stars, however I found some obvious errors in the book that should have been edited out before the release. Good starter book for sats.

A comprehensive introduction to the subject, this book shows in detail how such problems can be solved numerically with great efficiency. The focus is on recognizing convex optimization problems and then finding the most appropriate technique for solving them. The text contains many worked examples and homework exercises and will appeal to students, researchers and practitioners in fields such as engineering, computer science, mathematics, statistics, finance, and economics.
Customer Reviews:
Excelent reference both for theory and practice.......2006-03-02
The book provides sound theoretical basis in a non-intimidating way. It also presents many examples that help the reader understand and relate his or her specific needs to general convex optimization problems. I think this book is a really good compromise between theory and practice: it can please the more mathematics-oriented with proofs, definitions, and bibliography; as well as the more application-oriented with examples, implementations, and heuristics. The authors have been very generous in allowing the free download of the full book from their website.
A definite guide.......2006-01-15
The book excels in readability and style. A perfect balance on the theoretical and practical aspets of the convex optimization. As the name implies, and also as the authors put in preface, it is about recognizing, formulating, and solving convex optimization problems. Provides necessary mathematical background in the first part---not as deeply as a gradute level convex analysis book---and therefore helps reader build a working knowledge. If something is not covered in this part but essential for a working knowledge, then it is in the appendices for sure. Provides a wealth of examples, exercises, and applications. Perfect for self-study as well as classroom use.
bloated.......2005-12-02
as most engineering books, this one lacks depth and rigor. the development of the theories is often cluttered with TOO many examples.
this seems a swing to another extreme from most mathematical books where the naration is often too formal and lacks examples. (that old fool Rockafellar's book doesn't have one single figure in the entire book!)
IMHO, something in between is needed.
Convex Optimization.......2005-05-03
This is an absolutely wonderful work on the subject. It delivers precisely what the preface promises -- a very comprehensive introduction to convex optimization for users. Moreover, it delivers far more, for it is incredibly well-written and unusually accessible. It's a joy to read.

A decent undergrad book on the subject.......2007-08-20
This is one of the better undergrad-level books on the subject, and the fact that it's now in it's 7th edition (as of this writing) shows that it's still in use in the halls of academia. My copy, if I remember correctly, is either a first or second edition.
Unfortunately for me, I had a sub-par instructor (and a different text book) the first time I studied the material, and even though I got high marks in the class, I re-audited the class again, on my own time, with a different instructor, the following semester. The different instructor, and text book (this one), made a big difference, and really helped bring the material to life for me ... even though it cost me half of a perfectly good summer vacation to do it.
Let's face it ... probability computations, permutations, and confidence intervals, can be a bit dry (and a hot classroom with no air conditioning didn't help matters), but Wadpole does a decent job of not only covering the material well. There are plenty of worse books on the material out there, trust me. This one's better than others I've seen.
It is ok, but ..........2007-02-02
This is an OK book but too expensive for what it is. I learned a lot from the book. The excercises are good but the wording is sometimes confusing. You have the answers for "odd" exercises in the back of the book, but it looks like that the authors added new exercises in this edition and the answers are in the back of the book, therefore, you don't know if you got the right answer.
You better read some other Basic Statistic book, before you using this book. Good for people that study Science or Engineering.
Rough, Very Rough...........2006-11-25
The problem with this book is that it can not decide whether it is a proper mathematics book, spending time on formal proofs and on mathematical intuition, or a "recipes" book simply providing the reader with a list of statistical techniques.
The author spends some time going though the sequential building blocks of statistical theory, presenting key theorems, but only to leave more than 1/2 of them as "exercises". This leads to a number of problems such as:
1) Uncertainty regarding the applicability of techniques without a proper derivation from first principles
2) The need to constantly fall back to detailed wording of past Theorems and Corrolaries to compensate lack of intuitive understanding
3) The inability of the author to differentiate between BIG ideas and little details (and the links between them...)
The book is therefore an OK framework to get a quick overview of the topic, for quick browsing and quick fixes, but in order to really cover the material properly, one needs to constantly refer back to more thorough and formal works.
Remember the Calculus books that try to compensate a sharp presentation of ideas and concepts by encyclopedic integration techniques ???
Engineering Specialist.......2006-03-25
With an exception of Chapter 1, this book is well written, well organized with logical flow of subjects, and having practical example for every chapter's sub-topics. I found most of these examples are simple and very supportive for the understanding of mathematical expressions and that link the underline subject with real-world application. This book, in my opinion, is an excellent text for science and engineering students as well as for scientist or professional engineer who wants to achieve his or her self-study of the fundamentals of probability and statistics.
If Chapter 1 had provided a right level of abstract for an introduction of book's chapters and eliminated trivial / obvious errors (e.g. on pp. 9 and 10) in this chapter then, I believe, the reader's impression of the book would increase significantly.
The 6th Edition is among the best I've seen..........2006-02-08
I don't have the 7th Edition, but the 6th Edition is helping greatly. The explanation of concepts are crystal clear and the examples make sense, are well explained.

A Must Have! The Greatest resource for statistics for Engineers and Scientists.......2006-08-29
I hold a BS in Math and I'm completeing a MS in Applied Statistics. If I had this textbook prior to completing my course work I could have replaced three or four and maybe five other books with Dr. Navidi's work. This is with out question the best single source for basic statistics you can find for an engineer, scientist or anyone else that is more concerned with the use of the statistics than the mathematical background.
If you are looking for a basic intro book for a stats major this would be okay, it is the PERFECT BOOK for the intro to applied statistics course. There is more info in this book than can be covered in one semester but is easy to read and can be used for years and years as the resource for statistics.
Simple and easy to read, use and full of real world examples. A better statistics book does not exist.

Book Description
Real Engineering Situations, Real Engineering Data
With Montgomery and Runger's best-selling engineering statistics text, you can learn how to apply statistics to real engineering situations. The text shows you how to use statistical methods to design and develop new products, and new manufacturing systems and processes. You'll gain a better understanding of how these methods are used in everyday work, and get a taste of practical engineering experience through real-world, engineering-based examples and exercises.
Now revised, this Fourth Edition of Applied Statistics and Probability for Engineers features many new homework exercises, including a greater variation of problems and more computer problems.
Key Features
* The text treats all topics in a way that reflects today's engineering realities. In the probability chapters, the authors emphasize engineering-specific examples, rather than counting methods or artificial applications such as gambling.
* Examples and exercises throughout the text use real data and real engineering situations.
* Coverage of probability is lively and interesting. It is complete but concise so as not to take over the content of the entire text.
* Thorough coverage of regression modeling, design of engineering experiments, and statistical process control from experts in these topics makes the book especially useful as a reference.
Customer Reviews:
A Very Good Applied Stat Book.......2007-09-25
The book is very good for applied Statistics in engineering. It has many practical engineering examples that an engineer can apply at work. The "FREE Access to Online Student Resources Inside" white envelop interferes with opening the first few pages of the book when it is brand new. The book is well written.
Not recommended for self study.......2007-06-09
This book is not recommended for self study or distance courses. There are only sporadic answers to odd problems, most books of this type have answers for every odd problem. The student solution manual is even more worthless, some chapters have only 2 or 3 worked problems per chapter. Learning statistics with this book in a distance education course is really more painful than it should be. If you have to get this book, do not waste your money on the student solution manual.
This book may be a good reference to someone who already knows statistics, but to someone learning, especially without the benefit of lectures, the description and examples are way too sparse.
Not that good.......2007-05-12
The answers it gives you are sporadic and some are hard to follow. I was expecting solutions to all the odd problems and a little more detail with the solutions. I would not recommend buying this unless it were $10 or less.
Applied Statisitics and Probability for Engineers.......2006-11-05
Very comprehensive text, would be an excellent undergraduate text or
postgraduate reference. Must have book for Statistics and Probability.
Best engineering text on statistics.......2006-02-12
The third edition has been improved but has the same practical feel as earlier editions. Real data is used for most examples and having the "entire book" on a CDROM including the data sets, solution manual and supplimental material puts this text "over the top" in terms of usefulness. It is an excellent reference for the practical engineer who uses statistics only occasionally.
I use this in industry and teach internal (to the company) courses using this text. The CDROM really makes it the text of choice.
