5 out of 5 stars Solid textbook.......2006-02-25

This is a solid thermo textbook. Goes over concepts and theories fairly well. There are plenty of worked out examples throughout the chapters and appendixes so you know what you're doing. The authors explain everything in a clear and cohesive manner. Somethings are overwhelming, but it is thermodynamics. Plenty of appendixes for steam tables, interroplation, unit conversions, and virial equation constants, etc.

I suggest you get the Schaum's outline as a good reference too.

I received the book, but not what I was expecting. The book was advertised as a hardback, but the book received was paperback. The book was an international edition, and not for resale in North America.

    Book Description

The only text to cover both thermodynamic and statistical mechanics--allowing students to fully master thermodynamics at the macroscopic level. Presents essential ideas on critical phenomena developed over the last decade in simple, qualitative terms. This new edition maintains the simple structure of the first and puts new emphasis on pedagogical considerations. Thermostatistics is incorporated into the text without eclipsing macroscopic thermodynamics, and is integrated into the conceptual framework of physical theory.

The postulational approach is really great. This book tooks away all the question I had about the connection between thermodynamics and statistical physics. I think it's a good idea to read Fermi's thermodynamics also. To see how smart one can be when using thermodynamics.

Beautiful simple straightforward approach to thermodynamics. The postulates are well explained and the use of the axioms is highlighted. Challenging questions make this book a joy to use, great a student text as well as a reference.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful Postulational Approach to Thermodynamics.......2004-05-19

Why did I buy an older thermodynamics text, one first published in 1960? I trusted the advice of earlier reviewers.
They say: 1) The best treatment of classical thermodynamics that I have seen. The chapters on phase transitions are excellent and the mechanical model used to illustrate critical phenomena is brilliant. 2) It is far better than most books on the subject. 3) I think this book has no competition as a text in thermodynamics. It is the ideal preparation for a book like Landau's Statistical Physics. 4) The overview of the fundamentals of thermodynamics is without rival. 5) I think this book is a great option if you feel disappointed with the standard treatment of thermodynamics.

A few reviewers argued that Callen's text was less suitable for engineering students (too few heat-mechanical energy conversion problems) and chemical engineers (too few chemical mixture problems).

My trust was not misplaced. Thermodynamics, an Introduction to the Physical Theories of Equilibrium Thermostatics and Irreversible Thermodynamics, is an exceptional text. I give it five stars.

    H. B. Callen offers a fascinating and insightful postulational approach to thermodynamics rather than the conventional inductive approach. He targets first year graduate students and advanced undergraduates; however, even readers proficient with advanced thermodynamics should find Callen's approach stimulating.

The text has three primary sections: General Principles of Classical Thermodynamics (200 pages), Representative Applications (65 pages), and Fluctuations and Irreversible Thermodynamics (50 pages). An extensive appendix, some 50 pages, offers a useful review of pertinent mathematics and other relevant topics. Answers are not provided to the chapter problems.

Interspersed throughout are brief chapters that review useful mathematical techniques. I appreciated the discussions of the Euler equation, the Legendre transformations, the extremum principle in the Legendre transformed representations, and the Maxwell relations (not the Maxwell EM equations). Callen provides useful tools like a thermodynamic mnemonic diagram (first introduced by Max Born) and associated procedures for reducing the formal manipulation of partial derivates to "a simple recipe".

Callen's text has been widely used. I reviewed the 1960 first edition, eighteenth printing. A second edition published in 1984 is easier to find and is often used today as a supplementary text.

Thanks again for the advice from previous reviewers.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinarily good text.......2007-03-08

I have to say I'm not sure if texts on atmospheric dynamics get better than this. Physics books in general, in fact, rarely provide an understanding of phenomena that is so concise, intuitive, and yet mathematically robust. I highly recommend it for children, as a gift, and for pleasure reading.

I also very seriously recommend it as a graduate textbook. Five stars all the way.

4 out of 5 stars feedback from rmd.......2007-01-19

it's a very analytic book; it's strongly related to anaysis. all the models are very well explaned; perhaps there is not a good relationship between models and pratical meteorology. phenomena are quite 'hidden' by equations, and only a good experienced physicist has the tools to extract the pratical approach deriving from model behaviours.
however it remains a 'must' for meteorologists.

    Renato Medini

5 out of 5 stars The most exellent textbook in dynamics of the atmopshere.......2007-01-18

This book, in my opinion, is the most valuable book on dynamical aspects of the atmosphere insofar, especially from pedagogical point of views. As a foreign student, I understand well Holton's writings. Simple but very concise sentences, no wordy explanations. The first 3 chapters provide you the basic equations used in meteorology and their common approximations. The next 5 chapters, to me, are the most interesting chapters. They give you wide range of knowledge from boundary layer, synoptic scale phenomena, to instabilities. Equations are of great usefulness because THEY bring into the light physical contents of the dynamics of the atmosphere. To me, any analytical equation and its explicit solution provide us a more complete understanding than numerical models do (because you never know some unpredictable behaviour of numerical solutions). So, try to understand carefully the simplest cases that Holton selected. This gives you a lot of deeper understandings. Chapters 9 to 11 provide the dynamics of meso- to large-scale circulations. You will see why the Hadley circulation descends around 35N in very clear way. However, simple Poisson eqn with the argument of "positive forcing, negative solution" that is applied throughout the text should be paid especial attention because this conclusion is not always true. As a whole, the contents, explanations and derivations will be very well constructed if you see the main point of each section.
To get to the heart of this book, read and derive all the skips in Holton's derivations. The gaps are not too hard to fill out in math but require some thinking. DO ALL OF THE EXERCISES at the end by yourself and you will double your knowledge. For any math-related physical book, transparent derivations are the first thing you should figure out, physical explanations will follow subsequently. From my experience, people tend to skip any chapter what they thought they knew it already. If you apply this method here, you may be in trouble. Read carefully the first 5 chapters, understand approximations used in the each situation. Simply apply equations without judgments of their assumptions will take you into the nightmare.

I give this book 5 stars +. It is really classic....

4 out of 5 stars you can't find an alternative........2006-03-15

when i was a student, i used to think, like many other reviewers, that the book is extremely dry. but now as a researcher in atmospheric-oceanic dynamics, i realise that the book is useful in explaining the most essential and elementary theories behind the dynamics one can encounter in meteorology or climate dynamics.

use the book as a reference and revision of elementary concepts. if you encounter a process you need to understand in your research, this is the book which will tell you the basics. then you go on and learn more from journal articles and your own research.

this new edition of the book, especially with the matlab models, makes studying with it more fun because you can visualise the dynamics and play with the m-files yourself.

4 out of 5 stars An Underrated Text.......2003-10-01

This book, often simply referred to as "Holton", has been roundly cursed by undergraduates since it was first published. I know, because I was one of them. However, as the years went by, and as the number of classes requiring Holton as a text went by, I realized two things. First, that this book was not meant to hold your hand through all the derivations. It requires a competent instructor who can use Holton as a detailed companion to rigorous coursework. This book is NOT for the average person who wishes to study alone. The second thing is that this book was written to fill a gap. There were no similar atmospheric dynamics texts. As a consequence, it must cover a large amount of material in a rather small, college textbook-sized space. It does this well. Yes, the author's writing style is dry to the extreme, and yes, physical explanations are often lacking. However, if you have access to a competent professor, neither of these are problems. One final thought... as we call the book simply "Holton" remember that Frankenstein's monster is often called simply "Frankenstein", but we will leave comparisons to the reader - and to the author!

3 out of 5 stars Great Text - "Cheap" Physical Quality.......2006-08-15

One would think for $150, this book could have been printed on heavier weight and better quality paper. Either Wiley went overboard in trying to lighten physical weight for the student to carry, or they're trying to sqeeze even more money from already ultra-high book price mark-ups.

I also have the Fourth Edition -- That book has a heavier cover and tough paper pages. With this one, you need to be careful not to tear the pages, and forget highlighting as the ink will soak though 2 - 3 of the pages underneath. Dampness/humidity ... the pages warp and wrinkle.

    The text itself is top-notch.

    5 out of 5 stars heat exchangers.......2005-07-25

heat transfer, exchange of energy in the form of heat between bodies or parts of the same body at different temperature. heat is transferred by convection, radiation, or conduction. although these three processes can occur simultaneously, it is not unusual for one mechanism to overshadow the other two. for example, heat is transferred predominantly by conduction through the brick wall of a house, a pan of water on a stove is largely heated by convection and eart receives heat from the sun almost wholly by radiation.
heat exchangers are devices that provide the flowage thermal energy between two or more fluids at different temperature.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-04-17

I don't usually write reviews of books that I have purchased but I felt that I had to for this one. Does a great job in explaining the concepts and doesn't leave you lost as it moves through the chapters. It is written clearly and very easy to follow. The answers(not the worked out solutions) are avaliable on the company's website. (....)

Here,s the problem; You read the book, you are attentive at the lecture, you can't do the homework, you get the solutions to the homework, you still can't do the homework! For this book to be effective, an extensive supplemental solved problems programmed learning document must be authored! Silly me,I thought study hard be successful!Ha.Ha.Ha!

    4 out of 5 stars Descriptive.......2001-04-09

As far as textbooks go, I thought this was an excellent one. The text itself is useful, the example problems are relevant to the problems related to each chapter, and the theory is clearly mapped out.

Our class used this text to supplement another, though I thought the course could have stoof alone on the Incropera and Dewitt text. An excellent introduction to the topic.

    2 out of 5 stars Horrible Textbook.......2007-09-29

This textbook, is horribly written. It is does not explain concepts and examples in a sequential manner. Would not recommend this book for understanding fluid mechanics.

    1 out of 5 stars Difficult text.......2007-05-06

This book goes a long way to describe the most simple concepts in a confusing way. I ended up learning from a different text book. If your university uses this book, it is probably a good idea to take this course somewhere else. This book assumes that you have already taken dynamics and thermodynamics! The problems are not clearly written, so trying to understand the question is often more time consuming than finding the solution.

2 out of 5 stars The author could have made this book reader friendly.......2006-05-26

This book is good at the respeact that it has a variety amount of problem of each type that the author WANT students to solve.

The above is the positive side. But in the negative respect:

    1) This book doesn't have enough samples to help the students the grasp on the correct idea, maybe he should add an extra one or two samples into each applicable section of the chapters. (The author sometimes expect us to get all different types of problems by only explaining one type of problems, which left us in blank in approaching other types of problems.)

    2) The author has a hard time formating the paragraphs to make it readable.(It is word heavy in some sections that makes me stop reading. In addition, it is too verbose in some parts, and it is not having enough detail in some other parts.)

    3) The problem picturs and wording are often confusing. (He should clear up some of the pictures and word. ie. some pictures are supposed to have a nozzle, but it doesn't, some picture's dimension is supposed to be as same as the others, but it doesn't look like it. We have to make the correct kind of ASSUMPTIONS(mistakes/unclarity) in order the get the solution)

4)Not enough "cover page stuff", a lot of times i have to look for a certain convertion/constant in order to complete the problem.

    5) WE are ASSUMED to know all the convertion from all the different kind of unit system. (ie. WHAT is degree R, and how do you convert it to degree C? How do you convert Btu to another system?)(He needs to have more explaination on that.

That is the stuff i hate about this book so far.I think this book has some great materials, but he just need to present it better! By considering this is my first fluid book, i don't know what is in the others, so i'm not giving it a one instead.

    3 out of 5 stars Alright text.......2006-01-29

I have to say that this text was a little too verbose. The subject is difficult so text cannot be blamed entirely for it being boring.

3 out of 5 stars Good book to learn all about fluids.......2006-01-21

Although in my class we did not go through too many of the chapters I found it fairly easy to follow and if you have a strong interest in fluids this would be a great book.

For those who don't have a strong interest in fluids you may find this to be a bit boring. i didn't find it keeping my interest, I was bored almost every time I opened it.

    5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2007-03-12

Very clear introduction to the finite volume method, with worked examples at the end of a topic to illustrate the points being discussed.

3 out of 5 stars good to jumpstart in CFD.......2004-06-28

it is very good book in CFD for novice people.

3 out of 5 stars Good Intro To Finite Volume Method Circa 1990.......2003-10-16

I titled this almost recent book(1995) in such a way because it presents methods that are somewhat outdated as compared to the publishing date.

Having said that, it is a clear introduction to the subject regarding implicit finite volume calculations. It definitely provides enough detail to cobble together a working code if one so desires and nicely covers a lot of small extras that are important in understanding the development of the method. However, it really does not advance the subject much beyond Patankar's book (1980) and it is a little distressing that it misses out on recent advances to this area of CFD. Most notably is that it presents the only solution to pressure-velocity coupling problem to be the staggered grid : well yes that method is robust, but since before 1990 people have been successfully writing robust codes using co-located grids which are really a lot more friendly to work with (especially if one is considering unstructured grids). Also more modern matrix solution methods are currently usually used than are mentioned in the book. Also it does not mention the advantages of multi-grid methods. But all of these are quibbles for a book titled, "An Introduction ..."

For the professional practioner or those looking for a more encompassing and up to date book on the topic I recommend they look at the book by Ferzinger and Peric. However that book is much more advanced in the presentation of the material and might not be suitable to some people as an introduction.

    5 out of 5 stars A great introduction.......2000-04-15

If your new or interested in the field of CFD this book with introduction to cfd by john d anderson should be in your personal library. Great book by a great price

5 out of 5 stars A good introduction to CFD.......2000-04-12

Having first started to read Numerical Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow by Patankar and finding it a little complex, this book set out the fundamentals in a logical way. The use of examples throughout the book were a good learning tool.

A good introductory book to using CFD.

      Book Description

This reference work and graduate level textbook considers a wide range of models and methods for analyzing and forecasting multiple time series. The models covered include vector autoregressive, cointegrated, vector autoregressive moving average, multivariate ARCH and periodic processes as well as dynamic simultaneous equations and state space models. Least squares, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian methods are considered for estimating these models. Different procedures for model selection and model specification are treated and a wide range of tests and criteria for model checking are introduced. Causality analysis, impulse response analysis and innovation accounting are presented as tools for structural analysis.

The book is accessible to graduate students in business and economics. In addition, multiple time series courses in other fields such as statistics and engineering may be based on it. Applied researchers involved in analyzing multiple time series may benefit from the book as it provides the background and tools for their tasks. It bridges the gap to the difficult technical literature on the topic.

      Book Description

The rapid evolution of computing, communication, and sensor technologies has brought about the proliferation of "new" dynamic systems, mostly technological and often highly complex. Examples are all around us: computer and communication networks; automated manufacturing systems; air traffic control systems; and distributed software systems. The "activity" in these systems is governed by operational rules designed by humans; their dynamics are therefore characterized by asynchronous occurrences of discrete events. These features lend themselves to the term discrete event system for this class of dynamic systems.
A substantial portion of this book is a revised version of Discrete Event Systems: Modeling and Performance Analysis (1993), which was written by the first author and received the 1999 Harold Chestnut Prize, awarded by the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) for best control engineering textbook. This new expanded book is intended to be a comprehensive introduction to the field of discrete event systems, emphasizing breadth of coverage and accessibility of the material to readers with possibly different backgrounds. Its key feature is the emphasis placed on a unified modeling framework that transcends specific application areas and allows linking of the following topics in a coherent manner: language and automata theory, supervisory control, Petri net theory, (max,+) algebra, Markov chains and queueing theory, discrete-event simulation, perturbation analysis, and concurrent estimation techniques. Until now, these topics had been treated in separate books or in the research literature only.
Introduction to Discrete Event Systems is written as a textbook for courses at the senior undergraduate level or the first-year graduate level. It will be of interest to students in a variety of disciplines where the study of discrete event systems is relevant: control, communications, computer engineering, computer science, manufacturing engineering, operations research, and industrial engineering.

5 out of 5 stars Introduction to discrete event systems.......2000-05-26

This book is a great textbook for students who are interested in the control engineering field. Due to the difficulty, it is more focused for graduate students. This book has won the 1999 harold chestnut prize awarded by the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC). The topics are language and automata theory, supervisory control, Petri net theory, (max,+) algebra, Markov chains and queueing theory, discrete-event simulation, perturbation analysis, and concurrent estimation techniques. This book is used in many universities in the US but also in countries like Korea as well.

      Book Description

Instability of flows and their transition to turbulence are widespread phenomena in engineering and the natural environment. They are important in applied mathematics, astrophysics, biology, geophysics, meteorology, oceanography, physics, and engineering. This is a graduate-level textbook to introduce these phenomena by modeling them mathematically, and describing numerical simulations and laboratory experiments. The visualization of instabilities is emphasized with many figures. Many worked examples and exercises for students illustrate the ideas of the text. Readers are assumed to be fluent in linear algebra, advanced calculus, elementary theory of ordinary differntial equations, complex variable and the elements of fluid mechanics. The book is aimed at graduate students, but is very useful for specialists in other fields.

2 out of 5 stars Good topics, but see his other books.......2003-09-30

Drazin was an excellent writer (see Hydrodynamic Stability and Nonlinear Systems), but this book felt very disorganized to me, possibly because he passed away shortly before it's release.

The concept is very good: how do we get from instability to full-fleged turbulence, and are we even ready to answer the question? He gives a good explanation of the stability of ODEs, and follows this with a discussion of the standard linear hydrodynamic stability problems (Kelvin-Helmholtz, Rayleigh-Bénard, etc.). It ends with a discussion of the transition to turbulence.

But the problem is that he has already treated most of these topics in his other books, and the earlier treatments were nearly identical in many respects, or they were just plain better. Even regarding the new material on transition to turbulence, I feel that it did not serve to unify the earlier topics as it should have.

Some further editing may have greatly improved this book and better underscored the overlying theme, but as it stands I feel that one is better off spending their time on his other books.
