Book Description

An extensive revision of the author's highly successful text, this third edition of Linear System Theory and Design has been made more accessible to students from all related backgrounds. After introducing the fundamental properties of linear systems, the text discusses design using state equations and transfer functions. In state-space design, Lyapunov equations are used extensively to design state feedback and state estimators. In the discussion of transfer-function design, pole placement, model matching, and their applications in tracking and disturbance rejection are covered. Both one-and two-degree-of-freedom configurations are used. All designs can be accomplished by solving sets of linear algebraic equations. The two main objectives of the text are to: DT use simple and efficient methods to develop results and design procedures DT enable students to employ the results to carry out design All results in this new edition are developed for numerical computation and illustrated using MATLAB, with an emphasis on the ideas behind the computation and interpretation of results. This book develops all theorems and results in a logical way so that readers can gain an intuitive understanding of the theorems. This revised edition begins with the time-invariant case and extends through the time-varying case. It also starts with single-input single-output design and extends to multi-input multi-output design. Striking a balance between theory and applications, Linear System Theory and Design, 3/e, is ideal for use in advanced undergraduate/first-year graduate courses in linear systems and multivariable system design in electrical, mechanical, chemical, and aeronautical engineering departments. It assumes a working knowledge of linear algebra and the Laplace transform and an elementary knowledge of differential equations.

2 out of 5 stars insufficient for all levels.......2005-03-08

I found this book to be inadequate at all levels. It does not go into sufficient detail for beginners, and neither does it provide rigor for the experienced controls student. Do yourself a favor and buy separate texts for the basics (like Brogan's Modern Control Theory) and for the advanced.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2000-08-20

Up to this time, there are no 5 stars books in Linear Systems. However, this book is one of the best 4 stars books available for the subject. Through the book, the author sometimes assumes that you know or understand some topic, formula,...etc. without mentioning it. However, you can do it, but it may take you some time to figure out what it is. If you are good enough in linear algebra you will have no problems to handle the book up to the last page. Chapter 2 & 3 are the most important chapters in the book because they prepare you for the rest of the book. MATLAB is being used in a nice and helpful way to visualize some concepts and applications of the linear control theory. I recommend this book as a textbook for an introductory linear systems course and also for self teaching purposes.

4 out of 5 stars The Good, the Bad, and the Insufficent.......2000-04-01

My overall impression with this book is: satisfactory. Though there are a more errors then desired, and a few that are pretty confusing, the majority of the book is accurate and very instructive. I would recommend this book as a reference for introductory treatment of Linear System Theory and DI just completed this book in the beginning of March. Having a Controls background I found this book both helpful and instructive, yet lacking in sufficient detailed explanation on some tough topics. Chapter 2: 'Mathematical Descriptions of Systems' was very helpful with the detailed definitions and easy examples. Chapter 3: 'Linear Algebra' is a chapter that could use expanding. Some of the topics addressed in this section are speedily discussed and rapidly completed. The first edition of this book was chided for it length. This edition must be chided for it brevity. However, when lack of explanation abounds, examples and homework problems can make up for deficient instruction. Chapters 4 through 6 are easy to follow and through in their treatment. Chapter 7, however, is another chapter where too much explanation was removed. The examples are hard to follow in this chapter, and there are a few very confusing mistakes. Chapters 8 and 9 are very well written, though confused at times. However, they yield a sufficient knowledge of the addressed topics.

My overall impression with this book is: satisfactory. Though there are a more errors then desired, and a few that are pretty confusing, the majority of the book is accurate and very instructive. I would recommend this book as a reference for introductory treatment of Linear System Theory and Design.esign.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference, but not for beginners.......2007-01-31

I used this book along with _Linear Systems_ by Antsaklis and Michel. The latter book is better organized and easier to read, although (like this book) it is a bit dense. As another reviewer noted, Kailath's style is a bit hard to follow, so unless you're already familiar with some concepts from theoretical linear algebra, systems, and/or control theory, I would not recommend using this book alone as an intro to Linear Systems Theory. Nevertheless, it is a very thoughtful and useful book and should be on your shelf if you have a real interest in systems and controls.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, but hard to understand.......2002-04-12

This book is that dangerous combination of being theoretical without being rigorous. It's very deep and subtle, and it is not unusual to ponder a particular point for several weeks, as no derivation or explanation is given. Many statements are just thrown out there for the reader to figure out for himself. I have now read the book more or less from cover to cover, and that's how it has been, but I have to say, in the end it is worth it. I now truly feel that I know a lot about linear systems.

It's really not possible to read this book without having a number of other references around: linear algebra (Strang), abstract algebra (Artin), control theory (Brogan) and multivariable systems (Kaczorek) were most useful to me.

This book is excellent in that you will find results in here that you would not find anywhere else, including recent results and some developed by Kailath himself. On the other hand, frankly, the somewhat haphazard presentation style is a real impediment to understanding. In summary, this is a very good book, but you will have to work very hard to get something out of it.

5 out of 5 stars For a Complete State-Space Perspective.......2000-11-26

If you are an engineer with least span of attention, this book is certainly not for you. But if you are somebody who likes things to be concise and profound, and takes thrill in riding through theoretical maze, only to wonder in the end at it's simplicity and completeness, you would love this. I would say, second chapter on State-Space theory is the core of the book. Helps you to look at systems from different view-points, elaborating on different proprerties a system can and should have, meanwhile relating one with the other, filling the reader with sheer joy by giving him a complete picture.

Huge list of references at the end of every chapter and a brief appendix on Matrix algebra adds further value to this ultimate book on Linear System Theory.

1 out of 5 stars Exhausting.......2000-11-18

This book is exhausting to read. A far better source to learn linear systems is _Linear System Theory and Design_ by Chi-Tsong Chen.

There are numerous other books that cover certain topics in Kailth's book much better, too. Look at _Optimal Filtering_ by Anderson and Moore, _Linear Optimal Control Systems_ by Kwakernaak and Sivan, _Digital Control of Dynamical Systems_ by Franklin, Powell, and Workman, and even _Digital Control_ by Franklin and Powell.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Horrible book.......2007-03-13

The book offers no rigor in any sense and the author seems to have simply copied a large number of formulas from a real probability book. Explanations are sparse and incoherent with vague references to "important applications" with no sense of the abstract concept and virtually no insight into any of the information presented; as another reviewer wrote it is quite dry, I can't see Ben Stein narrating it, but I can picture the author sitting at his keyboard haphazardly plunking in text from other 'sources' all the while wondering what it means.

Skip this and get something with more substance, Peebles offers nothing more than you could find on wikipedia, perhaps less.

1 out of 5 stars A bad book to start with.........2006-05-01

This book though looks simple and pretends to present concepts in a lucid manner, does not match international standards. Very few examples are present with less/no illustrations. I struggled with this book for almost 2 years to understand the concepts as this book was the only popular book in my UG college and was readily available in our library. It has ideally no practical examples which can easily discourage reader. After reading contemporary books from Prof Roy Yates and Prof Leon-Garcia, I could do little favor for this book by giving 1 star.

However, one who is already thorough with concepts can use this book for revision. There is a huge element of risk involved in starting with this book to learn probability concepts.

2 out of 5 stars It's okay........2006-04-10

Layout of book is really bland and examples are scant. The subject matter is interesting, but the book itself is dry- you can almost hear Ben Stein narrating when you read it.

2 out of 5 stars Very little examples, no answers in the back of the book.......2006-03-23

This book does not have enough examples in the text. I tend to learn better by example and this book is not for people like myself. Also, there are no solutions to any of the homework problems in the back of the book. So you can't check your answers to see if you are doing the problems right.

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars as an undergraduate textbook for EE students.......2002-09-13

This book is one of the best undergradute textbooks for EE students, especially students having focus on physical-layer communication engineering. The highlight of this book is the enormous amount of well-written problems at the end of each chapter. These problems really help students fully understand abstract definitions and theorems which otherwise will not be easily cracked.

This book, however, has the following drawbacks:
1. The author should have emphasized in the first chapter the importance of real analysis and measure theory in order to motivate the students planning graduate research to study and prepare for the math courses during their undergraduate study.
2. No section for complex Gaussian random variable and vector, which are very important in digital communications.
3. No limit theorems except CLT.
4. No handling of convergence of a random sequence.

Even with above drawbacks, this book is still the classic. I recommend ambitious students to read a little bit advanced books along with this book to better understand the subject.

    Book Description

Systems as diverse as clocks, singing crickets, cardiac pacemakers, firing neurons and applauding audiences exhibit a tendency to operate in synchrony. These phenomena are universal and can be understood within a common framework based on modern nonlinear dynamics. The first half of this book describes synchronization without formulae, and is based on qualitative intuitive ideas. The main effects are illustrated with experimental examples and figures, and the historical development is also outlined. The second half of the book presents the main effects of synchronization in a rigorous and systematic manner, describing both classical results on synchronization of periodic oscillators, and recent developments in chaotic systems, large ensembles, and oscillatory media.

Not one of Schaums good books. Skips too many steps in solving problems. Other EE students and also complained about this one. Usually Schaums a safe bet, just not this time.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book EVER!!!!! (No Kidding).......2007-08-27

I don't even know how to start to express how much i love this book...i almost have tears in my eyes as im writing this LOL This book saved the rest of my studies in Electrical engineering. The book by OPPENHEIM is a WASTE of money AND time!!! It's a huge book that confuses students for nothing! But this one instead is more detailed and waaaaay smaller than OPPENHEIM's book. So that you actually learn waaaaay faster! It doesn't contain no stupid stories that we don't give a **** about LOL It goes straight to the point.
For me it's been the best book EVEEEEEEER!!!!! PERIOD!!!

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Study Tool.......2007-05-07

I purchased this book for a first course in Communications; Math of Linear Systems in the Electrical Engineering Department. This was the first outline book that I ever purchased. It was a great study tool. It is clearly organized and easily navigated. The language is plain and simple. The examples are effective in detailing the covered concepts, and will greatly improve your understanding of the material.

This book was used to clarify the concepts taught in the course - and accomplished that task well. It would be a poor idea to expect this book to teach Signals and Systems to someone unfamiliar with the concepts.

5 out of 5 stars Organized, Clear and Complete with Appropriate Rigor.......2007-02-27

    Positive:
The topics are well organized and covered with an attention to detail. In fact, some of the details regarding convergence of transforms are nicely and concisely presented in this text, while other more expensive texts gloss over certain subtle aspects (bilateral Laplace transforms). As a result of the quality of this book, I've used the text as the sole text for an undergraduate introduction to Signals & Systems. Like all Schaum's outlines, the book provides great detail in the steps necessary to arrive at final solutions. It's a bargain when used as a reference manual or tutorial.

    Negative:
Unlike a typical course text, there is very little explanatory prose in each chapter. Without an understanding of the motivation or reason for using certain "tools" in an electrical engineer's toolset, a student can easily feel as though most of the presentations are mathematical exercises without connection to real signals or systems. I've found that in my use of this text, it is imperative that those connections are carefully made, and constantly re-enforced, while working the exercises. A user of this text benefits from seeing demonstrations, working on real-world problems and making the mental connections between the mathematical operations contain within.

5 out of 5 stars A Work of Pure Imagination.......2006-11-03

If you are trying to understand the premise and scope of signals and systems theory, look no farther. Hsu hit a home run in the materials--especially selection of problems--and their arrangement. To get the most out of this text, you will need to understand your calculus and your calculus-based physics backwards and forwards. Otherwise, some of this material may strike you as somewhat pointless.

    Book Description

The problem of greenhouse gas (particularly carbon dioxide) release during power generation in fixed and mobile systems is widely acknowledged. Fuel cells are electrochemical devices offering clean and efficient energy production by the direct conversion of gaseous fuel into electricity. As such, they are under active study for commercial stationary power generation, residential applications and in transportation. The control of fuel cell systems under a variety of environmental conditions and over a wide operating range is a crucial factor in making them viable for extensive use in every-day technology.

In Control of Fuel Cell Power Systems the application of fuel cells in automotive powertrains is emphasized because of the significance of the contribution to global CO 2 emissions made by ground vehicle propulsion and because of the challenge presented by the accompanying control problems. The authors’ comprehensive control-oriented approach provides:

    • An overview of the underlying physical principles and the main control objectives and difficulties associated with the implementation of fuel cell systems.

    • System-level dynamic models derived from the physical principles of the processes involved.

    • Formulation, in-depth analysis and detailed control design for two critical control problems, namely, the control of the cathode oxygen supply for a high-pressure direct hydrogen fuel cell system and control of the anode hydrogen supply from a natural gas fuel processor system.

    • Multivariable controllers that attenuate restraints resulting from lack of sensor fidelity or actuator authority.

    • Real-time observers for stack variables that confer redundancy in fault detection processes.

    • Examples of the assistance of control analysis in fuel cell redesign and performance improvement.

    • Downloadable SIMULINK® model of a fuel cell for immediate use supplemented by sample MATLAB® files with which to run it and reproduce some of the book plots.

Primarily intended for researchers and students with a control background looking to expand their knowledge of fuel cell technology, Control of Fuel Cell Power Systems will also appeal to practicing fuel cell engineers through the simplicity of its models and the application of control algorithms in concrete case studies. The thorough coverage of control design will be of benefit to scientists dealing with the electrochemical, materials and fluid-dynamic aspects of fuel cells.

The companion software allows deep insight of the modelling and control problem, and the "what-if" analysis.

1 out of 5 stars Very poor book.......2005-11-16

This is a book with a series of simplifications and assumptions. I thought that it would help me deal with real control problems of fuel cell power systems. Instead it deals with only linearized models that can be easily solved by applying modern control theory. It is less than an introductory book really poor written.

      Book Description

The presence of uncertainty in a system description has always been a critical issue in control. Moving on from earlier stochastic and robust control paradigms, the main objective of this book is to introduce the reader to the fundamentals of probabilistic methods in the analysis and design of uncertain systems. Using so-called "randomized algorithms", this emerging area of research guarantees a reduction in the computational complexity of classical robust control algorithms and in the conservativeness of methods like H-infinity control.

      Features:

      • self-contained treatment explaining randomized algorithms from their genesis in the principles of probability theory to their use for robust analysis and controller synthesis;

      • comprehensive treatment of sample generation, including consideration of the difficulties involved in obtaining independent and identically distributed samples;

      • applications of randomized algorithms in congestion control of high-speed communications networks and the stability of quantized sampled-data systems.

Randomized Algorithms for Analysis and Control of Uncertain Systems will be of certain interest to control theorists concerned with robust and optimal control techniques and to all control engineers dealing with system uncertainties.

The present book is a very timely contribution to the literature. I have no hesitation in asserting that it will remain a widely cited reference work for many years.

5 out of 5 stars Clear and comprehensive.......2004-01-20

I had heard about this book from a friend with an interest in nonlinear dynamics; this is surprising in itself, since the book has been out for less than a year and already seems to be getting a positive reputation. The book more than lived up to my friend's recommendation. It is encyclopedic and remarkably clear. For anyone who is interested in linking nonlinear dynamical theory with empirical methodology, this is the best place that I know of to start.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on chaos/complexity theory & data analysis.......2003-05-26

For those wishing to upgrade their grasp of chaos theory, dynamics, nonlinear data analysis, with an introduction to related aspects of complexity including fractals and complex systems, this is the best book I have yet seen, and supplements the excellet visual dynamics books by Ralph Abraham. It arose from the upper level course taught by Sprott at the University of Wisconsin. The book is well supported by his website, which will always keep the book updated. It is nicely hands-on with lots of exercises and a programming project with each chapter. For those impatient to write programs, having a program like Berkeley Madonna to solve systems equations is handy for exploring some of the example systems. It has three excellent appendices, one a catalog of 62 dynamical systems, another useful mathematical formulas, and the last a compilation of useful journals. I found it incredibly comprehensive covering all aspects of the many subjects. And exceptionally clear, updating any necessary mathematics with clear explanations...
