Customer Reviews:
Book CD and supporting web page is first rate.......2005-10-30
My only complaint is that some of the algebra should be worked out with a few more intermediate steps. The worked out homework problems are fabulous and sooo plentiful.
I wish I had the time to really read the whole book. My ECE201 course will probably only cover around 6 chapters.
Great Book.......2005-09-26
I think this book is absolutely outstanding. I don't understand any of the negative comments. The cd that comes with the book is indispensble. It provides example after example. I actually bought schaum's outline of dsp as well, but because of all the examples on the cd (they are handwritten) I don't even have a need to refer to the outline.
In addition, I thought the content of the chapters to be very readable. The only downside is that because the book is dated 1998 the matlab code is out of date and some of the drills no longer work with the newer versions.
A horrible attempt........2005-01-23
This is probably the worst textbook that I have used in the past two years. The book makes a lot of basic concepts seem very difficult and a lacks the proper examples to even explain what the problems at the end of the chapter are asking. The wording is very boring and tends to put the reader to sleep- making the poor explanation of concepts even worse. The authors jump around and often fail to define terms or use them before they are explained. The index has proved to be worthless in many of these instances. There are a lot of problems that I do not believe could be solved by a new edition.
Needs Improvement.......2004-12-20
I'm not sure who wrote the positive reviews here, but I can tell you as a student using this book that it is among the worst I've ever been stuck with and most of my classmates seem to agree.
The concepts are made much more difficult than they should be by poor writing. The authors jump around constantly, use new terminology at times before introducing it, and provide examples that are inadequate in helping to solve the problems at the end of the chapter. Stylistically, the writing is very bland and sure to put you to sleep. The first sentence of the book is "This is a book about signals and systems."
Sure, this book may cover all of the core concepts involved in signal processing, but trying to make sense of it when you don't already have a background in the subject is quite a challenge. After reading the chapters, we were unable to solve most of the problems in the book until given the answers were given to us. I've dealt with bad textbooks before, but this one tops them all. Needless to say, it was very frustrating experience and I can't say I recommend this book.
Oops! These reviews are for another book.......2003-12-31
The reviews listed here, as of 12/30/03, are identical to the reviews for the 1997 book: "DSP First: A Multimedia Approach", by the same authors. Humm, I wonder how that happened!!!
(I don't own, and have not read, this book; but I had to enter a "star" rating to post this message. So I entered a 3-star rating which is in no way indicative of the quality of this book.)
Book Description
Digital images have become mainstream of late notably within HDTV, cell phones, personal cameras, and many medical applications. The processing of digital images and video includes adjusting illumination, manufacturing enlargements/reductions, and creating contrast. This development has made it possible to take long forgotten, badly damaged photos and make them new again with image estimation. It can also help snapshot photographers with image restoration, a method of reducing the influence of an unsteady hand.
Dr. Woods has constructed a book for professionals and graduate students that will give them the thorough understanding of image and video processing that they need in order to contribute to this hot technology's future advances. Examples and problems at the end of each chapter help the reader digest what has just been read. Forged from a theoretical base, this exceptional book develops into an essential guide to hands-on endeavors in signal processing.

Customer Reviews:
strong maths treatment.......2006-07-02
Woods gives a mathematically intensive course in the theory of processing of 2 dimensional images and of video. Roughly the first half of the book is on image processing. Discrete Fourier transforms constitute a large part of this narrative. Space is also given to image reconstruction and enhancement. Not enough room in the book to really cover that thoroughly, but Woods does an ample job of showing simple and effective methods of enhancement.
The second part of the book talks about video processing. And the various encodings possible or necessary, in order to reduce storage to some reasonable size.

Book Description
The color-imaging industry is on the threshold of major transformation and enormous expansion as digital color technology comes of age, bringing high-quality color to desktop systems and the Internet. However, the technology is not without challenges. In particular, it must contend with an ever-increasing variety of imaging devices and media. At the same time, it must produce predictable color results from individual systems and provide successful exchange of digital color images among different types of systems. Digital Color Management: Encoding Solutions offers engineers, scientists, and programmers practical solutions to these and other challenges of color imaging in the digital domain. Going beyond standard color-measurement techniques, this book describes advanced methods for digitally representing and communicating color. It provides clearly written background on the science of color and imaging technology, a detailed explanation of digital color encoding today, and an examination of the issues involved in creating a truly device-independent, unified, color-managed environment compatible with all major platforms and devices. Combining the expertise of Edward Giorgianni and Thomas Madden, two principal developers of many color-encoding methods and interchange standards used throughout the color-imaging industry, this book provides a first-hand account of the current state of that industry and an insightful look at its future. The book also features: over 350 full-color figures and photographs; appendices covering the details of color-interchange transformations for current systems, including PhotoYCC, Cineon, FlashPix, and systems using International Color Consortium profile format standards; and a foreword by world-renowned color scientist R.W.G. Hunt.
Customer Reviews:
Stunning!.......1998-08-07
I have attended several of Mr. Giorgianni's tutorials on color management in recent years and have found him to be an outstanding instructor. His book brings into focus the complex issues in color management and explains them all with unparalled insight. I'm sure that this was a very difficult book to write and produce. The authors and the publisher deserve the thanks of the digital imaging community.
This book will endure for decades as the book to beat........1998-05-11
I am the author of eight books, and my latest one is on digital imaging. In a word, I find Digital Color Management astounding - both in scope and in clarity. The writing is superb and the material is beautifully illustrated. I believe this book clearly reaffirms Kodak researchers as a prescient within the imaging industry. My only criticism is that this book was not available while I conducted my latest research. If you are involved in any aspect of contemporary imaging technology, not having this book places you at a distinct disadvantage. Thank goodness not too many books like this come along - it is enough to give any author pause, if not despair, as to what a technical book should be.

More of a collection of journal articles than a text book.......2002-07-02
This book is very similar to journal articles. The material is highly compressed and assumes that the reader is among the 1000 most skilled people in the world in this area and is totally knowledgable in the state of the art of six months ago and earlier. It therefore leaves out things that a new learner in the area would need to know. This explains why there are so many copies available used and their low prices and their fine/unused condition.

Book Description
Personal multimedia communication is the major growth area in engineering today with many people across the world in industry and academia working on the design of future generations of mobile radio systems and source coding methods. Before multimedia applications can be truly successful in mobile environments, many technologically demanding problems must be resolved. In order to provide the user with a suitable end-to-end service for multimedia applications, complex systems, interfaces and coding schemes need to be developed. In mobile multimedia, the air interface bandwidth requirements are likely to be dominated by the needs of one key service: video. Even with today's most aggressive compression algorithms, the needs of video exceed the bandwidth available with existing mobile connections. Although available bandwidth will increase, with the introduction of UMTS and local services based on wireless LANs (such as HiperLan), it is clear that advances in radio technology and air interface design must go hand in hand with innovations in source and channel coding.
The purpose of this book is to present an integrated view of advanced radio systems, network architectures and source coding that demonstrates the state-of-the-art as well as future directions in this rapidly developing field. The book acts as a repository of ideas, design examples, and advanced techniques for research staff, practicing engineers, and technical managers alike. Since the contributions are drawn from international experts in both academia and industry, the book should be attractive to both practicing professional engineers and researchers worldwide.

Book Description
Together the book and CD-ROM form a learning system that provides both investigative studies and the visualization of complex processes. A didactic concept is undertaken for microelectronics, computer technology and communication engineering, which deals with the visualization of signals and processes in addition to graphical programming of signal processing systems. Through the utilization of a professional and globally supported software for metrology and control engineering, DasyLab, useful applications can be developed, modified and optimized.
Computer supported processing of real signals is made possible over the sound card and the parallel port. Over two hundred pre-programmed signal engineering systems and design transparencies are provided.
Pictures also play a dominant rule in this book: there are numerous introduction-videos, one for every chapter, more than 250 high-quality pictures and - most important – all the "living" experiments and their results are visualized. With this learning system, readers can now make use of "equipment" and software, which was practically unaffordable for individuals in the past.
What's more, here is a very new concept for learning Signal Processing, not only from the physically-based scientific fundamentals, but also from the didactic perspective, based on modern results of brain research.

Book Description
Multimedia Signals and Systems is an essential text for professional and academic researchers and students in the field of multimedia.
Multimedia Signals and Systems is primarily a technical introductory level multimedia textbook, including problems, examples, and MATLAB® codes. It will be a stepping-stone for readers who want to research in audio processing, image and video processing, and data compression.
This book will also be useful to readers who are carrying out research and development in systems areas such as television engineering and storage media.
Anyone who seeks to learn the core multimedia signal processing techniques and systems will need Multimedia Signals and Systems. There are many chapters that are generic in nature and provide key concepts of multimedia systems to technical as well as non-technical persons.
There are also several chapters that provide a mathematical/ analytical framework for basic multimedia signal processing. The readers are expected to have some prior knowledge about discrete signals and systems, such as Fourier transform and digital filters. However, a brief review of these theories is provided.
The accompanying CD provides several MATLAB® codes along with a few test data samples; e.g., audio, image and video.
Multimedia Signals and Systems is suitable for advanced-level courses in multimedia and is also a well-needed addition to the professional reference library in this area.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent and interesting introduction to multimedia.......2003-08-14
It is not easy to find a textbook on multimedia for upper level undergraduate and graduate computer engineering students. This book has filled the need, and has presented an excellent and interesting introduction to multimedia in fifteen chapters. Although, it has been assumed that the readers have knowledge about discrete-time signals and systems, a chapter has been included to review basic transforms and filter theory, as well as to present advanced theories such as discrete cosine transform and wavelets. The signal processing theories have been explained and demonstrated with simple examples. A strong point of the book is the accompanying CD that contains MATLAB codes for all relevant examples. The readers can easily run these codes and verify the results of the audio/image/video experiments presented in the book. For those who are not familiar with MATLAB, the processed audio/image/videos for several examples are provided in the CD. These readers can just play the audio file or display the image to verify the subjective quality. Instructors should also find the Power Point figures and tables provided by the author useful.
Concise and Very Informative.......2003-02-11
Most books on Multimedia either deal with specific applications of multimedia or offer an analysis of just one Multimedia standard, but this book establishes the fundamentals of multimedia signal processing, introducing generic concepts and then offering a more detailed analysis of the underlying mathematical concepts.
The language is simple and the author does not try to confuse the reader with technical jargon. The material on audio and video compression and various standards is especially intensive. The example programs in the MATLAB CD are well written and give the user a clear understanding of the practical aspects of digital filtering, compression algorithms and the basics of multimedia signal processing. I would strongly recommend this book to someone who wants to know the `whys' as well as the `hows'.

Book Description
The unprecedented growth in the range of multimedia services offered today by modern telecommunication systems, is possible because of the advancements in signal processing technologies and algorithms.
Signal Processing for Telecommunications and Multimedia presents a group of invited contributions, some of which have been based on the papers presented at the 7th International Symposium on DSP for Communication Systems held in Coolangatta on the Gold Coast, Australia, in December 2003. Part I of the book deals with applications of signal processing to transform what we hear or see to the form that is most suitable for transmission or storage for a future retrieval. The first three chapters in this section are devoted to processing of speech and other audio signals. The next two chapters consider image coding and compression, while the last chapter of this part describes classification of video sequences in the MPEG domain.
