[A review of the 2nd edition.]

The 2nd edition includes descriptions of Matlab 7. But in fact, much of the text seems unchanged from the 1st edition. Because while Matlab continues to add refinements, it is by now very stable in its core functionality. Thus, at least for beginners, the book is useful, regardless of which precise version of Matlab is on your machine.

Many of the examples are indeed quite easy. The underlying maths knowledge is at the undergraduate level. Say for 1st or 2nd year undergrad maths courses. One example uses Lagrange's equation in classical mechanics. That seems to be about as advanced as matters get.

The graphical capability of Matlab given by the book is equivalent to what Mathematica provides. Though perhaps the latter has somewhat spiffier graphics, the graphical functionality is about the same.

3 out of 5 stars A no nonsense introduction to Matlab 5/6.......2003-05-20

This book is more of an introduction to Matlab 6 than 5.It claims to cater both beginners and advanced users.I use Matlab 6 for my research in Communication and Signal processing.Having worked on Matlab 4 , I doubt whether it can be a serious introduction to advanced users. The material is fairly concise and easy to read. All examples are simple and easy to implement straight away after a first reading. It covers almost all important sections to prepare you for any field you would like to work on with Matlab 6.

It has a full chapter on "Simulink" which is really nice having. The are bountiful examples and three practice sets.I would have loved to see a full section on " Files ".This is a drawback.Apart from some minor shortcomings this is a fairly good introductory book.

Book Description

This authoritative book guides readers in developing a strong working knowledge of MATLAB to solve a wide range of engineering problems. Since solving these problems usually involves writing relatively short, one-time-use programs, the authors demonstrate how to effectively develop such programs in MATLAB–programs that are compact yet readable, easy to debug, and execute fast. Emphasis is on using MATLAB to obtain solutions to several classes of engineering problems, so technical material is presented in summary form only.

5 out of 5 stars The best.......2003-05-30

This is one of the best books out there. I not only used it in my vibrations class back as an undergraduate (and I had vibrations with Magrab too!), I have continued to find new ways to use it in the work world today. Dr. Magrab and the others have written a very useful book that definitely relates engineering to this program.

5 out of 5 stars hit the bullseye.......2002-07-16

This one is really for engineers, it goes over the basics first, subsequently it goes into more details. It has handy examples of mechanics, dynamics...etc. if you are a mechanical or an electrical engineer, and you are a matlab user, this book would mean a lot to you.

5 out of 5 stars Great title for mechanical and other engineering fields.......2001-11-06

Many 'engineering' matlab books don't live up their titles. They are simply written as general introductions to matlab with a few useless thoughts about engineering thrown in.

In my opinion, a good matlab engineering book focuses less on general tips that you could get anywhere, and more on practical problem solving techniques and methodologies that provide insight into a paticular engineering problem and its solution.

This books succeeds in that respect. Though it gives space to the more general issues of using matlab, it gives ample room to specific engineering problems. I found its information and examples very useful. The topics are focused on mechanical engineering fields, such as vibration and control; however, the math used for such topics are used across engineering and science disciplines. Thus, any scientist or engineer will find this book useful.

The book is written so that engineers at many levels can benefit from it. For example, as a former graduate student, I found the treatments of vibration response analysis insightful. However, an undergraduate or otherwise inexperienced user would benefit from this book as well, because there is alot of general discussion of how to effectively and efficiently use matlab and write m-files.

All in all, I found this book excellent for both its treatment of high level engineering analysis issues and its more general matlab tips and discussion.

5 out of 5 stars excellent, numerous practical applications for Matlab.......2000-11-12

Excellent! ... Applied Engineering using computers, it doesn't get any better than this. Examples, programs, applications .. this is where this book beats the competition. Matlab is a powerful program, and this book shows why. It has been written for beginners and experienced users alike. Introduction to matrices, then goes into functions, and 2D/3D plotting ... then the fun begins with Engineering Applications in fields such as Machine Design, Vibrations, Control Systems, Dynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer and even Statistics and Optimization! Numerous programs and examples serve as practice for the reader. I am currently using the text to write programs for calculating the vibration of thin beams in my Grad Vibrations class. I only wish I could have gotten my hands on a book such as this when I took many of my undergrad courses. By the way, this book refers to MATLAB 5.3 (Release 11). Congratulations to the authors on such a thorough guide.

5 out of 5 stars Triple C - concise, comprehensive, captivating.......2002-11-28

Matlab Guide is a clearly written, well structured and quite comprehensive account of the capabilities of Matlab. In each chapter, the material explained swiftly progresses from the simple to the more complex, making this book a concise source of information and an excellent reference for the intermediate to advanced Matlab user. The focus is on mathematical topics; the pieces of example code are a nice mixture of playful toys and serious applications. Also, the book contains important hints concerning efficient programming, it has a very agreeable layout, and the citations at the end of each chapter do their job in keeping the reader's mood at a high level. Clearly, absolute beginners may have a hard time working their way through it, and the coverage of isolated topics, like file input/output, is a little meager. However, this is only a minor point. All in all, so far having used matlab primarily for data analysis (electrophysiology) I very much enjoyed and benfited from a fresh look at it from a different perspective.

5 out of 5 stars A serious book for all users of MATLAB.......2002-10-01

This is a book that doesn't ignore that MATLAB is a tool for mathematicians, but at the same doesn't alienate the non-specialist.

Starting with a basic tutorial and continuing with useful short cuts and introductions to script files, functions and graphics this book gives the reader an immediate working knowledge of the basic functions and data structures of MATLAB.

Later chapters address linear algebra (with treatment of eigenvalue problems, linear systems and matrix decompositions) and numerical methods (for differential equations and other problems); both with enough mathematical background and each topic can be accessed independently.

The book finishes with important topics such as optimizing functions, input and output, use of the Symbolic Toolbox and a final chapter with more tricks and tips.

You are left convinced that the authors are extensive users and admirers of this software, and through this book the reader can become the same.

2 out of 5 stars Not a good book for beginners.......2001-12-21

I bought this book because I saw the good reviews about it here. I just started to learn Matlab, so what I really need is a book that can describe things clearly, and STEP BY STEP. When I was reading the first chapter, which is a small Matlab tutorial (The authors stressed that the readers should walk through chapter one), I got so frustrated because there are so many functions and procedures I don't know and the authors don't explain (They defend this in their preface though). I moved on to the rest of the book and I found that it happens everywhere: this book keeps jumping on some fancy math subjects without explaining clearly the fundermentals. They didn't bother to explain the syntax for lots of programs.
I gave up on this book. What I had to do is find a online tutorial to get me started. I did find one good tutorial from University of Dundee, you can search its website in google. I am going to keep Matlab Guide in case I need it some time. But for starters, look elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Book to get beyond the Beginning level of matlab.......2001-07-22

I am going to also write a review on "Mastering Matlab 6.0", I will be also comparing the two books in the reviews. It is the basis of my review here. I am assuming (seee below) that one has learned Matlab at the beginning level and is looking for a book to get you to the Journeyman level.

If you are considering Matlab as a scientific computing language - look no more. It has licensened the "Maple Kernal" as part of its "Math Symbolic ToolBox", it uses LAPAK from FORTRAN for the algorithms for Matrix operations; it uses a high level language (very C++ like) and its own consise syntax for matrix manipulations as well as "Handle Graphics" to produce impressive looking plots and reports. In otherwords, it combines the best of various approaches. If you do not know C++, I advise that learn that first before attempting to learn Matlab.

Comparing "Mastering Matlab 6" (MM6) to "Matlab Guide" (MG):

*Both books are NOT for absolute Beginners, I think the assumption is that you will first study the book that comes with Matlab and the supurb "Help" Documentation that comes with the program. There are also good starting out tutorials on the net - search: "Matlab; Tutorial". The US Navy has a consise tutorial to get you started.

*MM6 does a better job on teaching to the next level beyond the Mathworks supplied documentation and beggining Tutorials.

Where Matlab Guide falls short compared to MM6: *MM6 WINS HANDSDOWN ON TEACHING version new to 6.0 specific features. You are short changing yourself by going for a 5.0 text. It is not as well cross referenced as MM6. "Where is the code to solve real world problems" is a grievance I have with MG.

*MM6 is geared more towards a programmer/scientist/engineer really needs to know; whereas, MG is geared to a mathematician. If you want "A survey of Mathematics with Matlab as your Guide" (a more appropriate title in my opinion) then this (MG) is your book. This book really jumps around. Example: Fibonacci sequence on p9, Collatz iteration on p10, Systems of Linear Ordinary Differential Equations on p12, Sierpinski gasket (fractal geometry) on p.17....

WHAT IS MISSING in MG: * Matlab 6.0 specific features. * Extending Matlab with Programming languages * Integrating it in with Windows./GUIs/ Dialog boxes.

Don't get me wrong, I eventually will read all of this book and learn a lot of math in the process - but to get to the Journeyman level in Matlab as an engineer or scientist, I reccomend MM6 instead. If you want to get real math specific, MG is your choice - but you will not learn as much Matlab and problem solving with Matlab.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-03-16

This is a succinct and clear book. The authors provide useful information with the minimum of waffle. In each chapter they move from simple to more complicated topics using illustrative examples. I think even experienced users will find material of interest. It is hard to find faults with this book, and it is surprisingly captivating for a technical text.

1 out of 5 stars This is the worst book I have ever used in my enitire college career........2006-01-21

This book was awful. Concepts are confusing, examples are lacking, and most of the homework problems do not represent the material taught in the revelant chapter.

This book is terrible in getting across concepts and procedures relating to a variety of problems. One or two examples didn't help me work 20 hw problems, and on top of this the solutions aren't in the back of the book. you have to go on their website to get any supplementary material (which sucks just as bad). It will take forever just to get started on the homework problems because you will have to figure out how it even related to what was read in the chapter.

1 out of 5 stars This book is horrible!.......2005-10-02

This is the book we're reading in my first EE class, and it sucks. Maybe if I had a great professor that actually taught and walked us through the practice problems it wouldn't be so frustrating, but he doesn't, and it makes trying to go through the book EXTREMELY difficult.

There are huge gaps in information that show up in assigned problems, which I understand can help reinforce the learning process, but there are books that do it effectively and then there's this piece of crap.

The authours of this steaming pile of cow waste leave out important details that can cost a student literally hours in trying to figure out a solution only to discover that the reason for the incorrect answer is because the book failed to mention ANYTHING that might be helpful.

I can't relate how many times I went online and actually looked up information in OTHER books that were 1000000 times better than this POS.

An example, you ask? On the section on combining independent current sources, it mentions (in about 2 sentences) that current sources should be combined when in parallel. That's fine and dandy, but what it doesn't tell you is that when you're doing ANY PROBLEM where current is in question, you've got to add any current sources BACK in to the answer, depending on where they appear in the circuit, or you'll get garbage as a result.

Is this common sense? Sure, I guess, if you've already taken the class and already understand circuit analysis. If you haven't and you don't, the authors apparently decided to leave you up s@#t creek without a paddle after robbing you blind.

If you're taking an EE class and see that this is the text, check out the professor before you take it, or you'll be sorry.

1 out of 5 stars POOR BOOK.......2004-06-26

I am forced to buy this book because my class requires it. Otherwise I wouldn't have bought this book. I can get better than or as good as this book for quarter of its price. The answer to problems doesn't come with the book (not a SINGLE solution to any of the problems) so there's no way of checking if you're finding a corrent solution to the problem which is most important aspect of learning. SO WATCH OUT BEFORE YOU BUY! (As u know most science books provide a odd number solutions to check the answers to problems and teachers give even number problem for HW) The link on the book promises student problem companion, but I had to purchased it for extra 17.95$ to get it, but very few problems with solutions (5-6 problems per chapter) were offered. In other words I am ripped again. So every moment I use this book I smelled a greed for money. The website for this is confusing and unhelpful and resources that seems useful are priced. In the end I would recomment anything other rather than this book for someone who is serious about studying electronics.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent for anyone studying the basics of circuit analysis.......2004-05-21

Like the title itself says, this is an introductory book on Circuit Analysis. In the first year of my engineering graduation, I used this book for the subject of Basic Circuit Analysis and found it to be extremely helpful. I think I can even say that this book made my life a lot easier, since the author - J. David Irwin - did a very good job on explaining concepts and circuit analysis basic methods and laws very clearly.

The book is very well structred, objective and and the subjects are easily understandable for the reader with little or none electronic circuit knowledge: every chapter starts with an introduction and a list of helpful topics which the author named "Learning Goals"; then, everytime a new concept/law/method is introduced, the author tests the reader to see if he did comprehend what has been explained to him by presenting him with very basic exercices, "Learning by Doing"; the author also provides the reader with "Learning Hints" on a regular basis, which can be interpreted as algorithms to solve certain problems or simple hints for the reader to do the exercice correctly, avoiding typical mistakes; at last, when a resonable amount of concepts have been introduced, the book features many "Learing Examples" with resolutions (note that resolutions can be of an extreme importance when the reader cannot understand how a certain problem is solved).

«Basic Engineering Circuit Analysis» covers everything that a book of this kind (introductory book) should cover, and even more, all in a clear way: basic concepts (quantities and electrical elements), resistive circuits (where the ohm and kirchhoff's laws are introduced), circuit analysis techniques (nodal and loop analysis), equivalent circuits (superposition, thévenin and norton's theorems), capacitance and inductance, first and second-order transcient circuits, AC steady-state analysis, magnetically coupled networks, steady-state power analysis, polyphase circuits, variable frequency network performance, the laplace and fourier tranforms (and applications to circuit analysis - e.g. bode diagrams), two-part networks and basic semiconductor circuits (diodes and transistors).

In my opinion, this is an excelent book for everyone who wants to study the basics of electrical circuit analysis. I highly recommend it for that purpose.

5 out of 5 stars Very Nicely Put Together.......2003-02-19

I feel like this book was very nicely put together. Those who believe otherwise are just slackers that have been given everything they needed in high school. This book is a GREAT book for a electrical engineering major, but just having this book will not make you more intelligent, you will need to take the time to read it to understand what's going on.

      Book Description

A Guide to MATLAB Object-Oriented Programming is the first book to deliver broad coverage of the documented and undocumented object-oriented features of MATLAB®. Unlike the typical approach of other resources, this guide explains why each feature is important, demonstrates how each feature is used, and promotes an understanding of the interactions between features. Assuming an intermediate level of MATLAB programming knowledge, the book not only concentrates on MATLAB coding techniques but also discusses topics critical to general software development. It introduces fundamentals first before integrating these concepts into example applications. In the first section, the book discusses eight basic functions: constructor, subsref, subsasgn, display, struct, fieldnames, get, and set. Building on the previous section, it explores inheritance topics and presents the Class Wizard, a powerful MATLAB class generation tool. The final section delves into advanced strategies, including containers, static variables, and function fronts. With more than 20 years of experience designing and implementing object-oriented software, the expert author has developed an accessible and comprehensive book that aids readers in creating effective object-oriented software using MATLAB.

5 out of 5 stars a GUIDE to oop in MATLAB.......2007-06-07

I have been developing a MATLAB toolbox incorporating OOP-Principles.
It has been quite painful, the MATLAB documentation covers the functions but provides little guidance.
This is a guide, it addresses many things that had been making me crazy, like...
      - what should the relationship between get/set and subsref/subsasgn be?
      - is nargout really as broken as it seems?
      - what functions need to be overloaded to get MATLAB-like behavior?
      - what functions can be overloaded to provide enhanced MATLAB-like behavior?
      - how is inheritance done?
This book has little fluff, it sticks to its objectives throughout.
My only complaint is that there appears to be no website dedicated to it.

5 out of 5 stars very helpful code.......1999-11-15

I find the book very helpful, especially the Matlab code. I am not using the mechanics portion at this time. I would like to see toolboxes on plates of all shapes treating frequency, deflection and stresses for all the usual boundary conditions. - That would be a good sequel to the book.

I am a mechanical engineer working in the aerospace/defense sector. I recently attended an introductory Matlab class. I really liked Matlab, it is a powerful tool. I was looking for more material to read and books which combine Matlab with mechanical engineering. This book did that very nicely.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Selection of Topics, Good Book.......1998-09-30

I am a big fan of MATLAB, and this is a good book, therefore, this book seems perfect for a Computational Sciences Survey course for undergraduates. Professionals, such as engineers or mathmematicians, can use this book to learn how easy it is to use Maple and MATLAB.

The topics are diverse, and are not systematic, which I consider to be a strength for this type of book. The writing is concise and direct.

The book is written primarily by Swiss and Czech authors; some minor grammer and puncuation errors exist and the references list many non-english titles. I think this is a strength: it is important to realize the international nature of Compuational Science.
