prolific problem sets.......2005-01-09
In his latest update of this text, Sullivan takes the reader through a high school or undergraduate level course in algebra. Though the title says "College", all of this material is also eminently do-able at the high school level, for advanced students, aspiring to major in maths or science. While at the university level, it appears to be targeting those students not majoring in maths, physical science or engineering.
Why? Because the dividing line is calculus. The book gives a good treatment of what you should know in maths, up to, but not including, calculus. It also has a chapter on probability. Which I don't think is usually considered part of algebra. But, pragmatically and correctly, Sullivan chose to include it.
The text has numerous examples, with only a little emphasis on a strict derivation of theorems. Another indication that it does not target a maths major. Sullivan gives informal explanations that should suffice to satisfy most readers.
Each chapter also has a prolific number of problems; around one hundred. Very suitable and convenient for a lecturer [you?] to assign as homework, since the book only supplies answers to half of these. Enough to keep your students happily [?] busy.

Decent at best........1999-01-06
The book is decent. But is not a great text book. It's highlihgted formulas, etc... are very helpful, but it doesn't seem to explain a lot of things in a way to make them easily understandable. I have used many different math books, and I would not use this one unless you are teaaching extremely bright students.

An awful algebra book.......2007-07-09
For the price, you would expect a textbook that goes over algebra in enough detail to instil the student with confidence and the ability to work with algebra with ease.
Unfortuntaely this is not the case. The textbook does a terrible job explaining concepts, with many not included at all. The book contained a lot of questions, but the type of questions for which one should be able to answer in college algebra are unrelated to the text examples because they are a different type of question.
The organization of the book is horrendous, as it is filled with tidbits of information throughout, going offtopic throughout.
I cannot recommend this book at all, as it just adds to the stress of a math course. Please consider other options if you want to spend your time learning and not frustrated trying to decipher the book.
If you are wanting an easy time with college algebra, I strongly suggest Barron's Algebra The Easy Way and Idiot's Guide To Algebra
Very detailed and helpful.......2006-06-15
This book was very helpful and detailed. I did my algebra class online so I didn't have a teacher right infront of me when I had a question. Luckily, because of this books' specifity and detailed explinations, I was able to answer my own question and not have to go through the lengthy process of e-mailing back and forth with my teacher to get an answer.

Examples and problems constructed by inexperienced students.......2006-01-27
I have a master's degree in Electrical Engineering. I tutor students who are using this book in a community college course. In layout and in format, the book is very good. The concepts are presented in logical order, and the principles are usually explained well.
My problem is that the examples and the end-of-chapter problems are full of errors. Example: Section P.6, "Rational Expressions" presents several examples to define the domain of an expression. Most of these conclude with the incorrect domain. This kind of sloppy editing can leave the student totally confused about a concept that is all-important to understand later concepts, such as systems of equations and series summations.
I fully believe that the author left the basic book construction in the hands of inexperienced students. Its too bad that he did not bother with some double-checking of the work.
Precalculus Only.......2006-01-17
You are looking for a college algebra book for self-study, review or as a supplement to an assigned book, I presume, and not to buy 50 for a college classroom.
So, some math teachers say that algebra is in fact boring, and has almost no use except as preparation for higher levels of math beginning with calculus. With that in mind, it would seem this book is entirely too long. A good precalculus text of less than 250 pages ought to be sufficient.
For example, "Precalculus in a Nutshell," with a 128 pages, may be a bit short for a college class, but the author Simmons opines it has all one needs to know of alegebra, geometry, and trigonometry to proceed to calculus.
From my review of math books, a book from the 1980's or early 1990's would provide more direct, harder-hitting, more meat and less mamby pamby, hand-holding, baby-rattler attention-getting that seems to be the style for modern textbooks addressing the need of those addicted to the phantasmorgia of MTV.
It is almost dizzying to look at new textbooks with the multiple fonts and colors and pictures and thought-interrupting lead-ins, lesson objectives, short paragraphs, one concept every ten pages, etc. Whew! Turn off the music, already! Just give me the facts, please. I can handle it.
Nothing makes an esoteric, rigorous subject exciting. You've got to roll up the sleeves of your brain, and start sweating away darkness. As the Marines might say, "tedium is ignorance leaving the body."
Reviewing textbooks from the 1940's will give you example of how austere textbooks used to be, but that is the other extreme for young students who were then not so preoccupied.
Buy an older, cheaper used book, and save your money for a graphing calculator.
Finally, one can determine exactly what is needed in college algebra by looking at the early sections of review in the latest calculus textbook.
Great, but Packaging needs improvement!.......2005-09-26
I am very pleased with the process. The book that I ordered was correct and sent promptly. The only problem I had was with the packaging. It came wrapped in plastic ONLY! That caused the book to get damaged corners and dents.
An Introduction to the Theory of Numbers.......2003-09-15
I had the chance to go through the above book and I must say that I found it very useful. I very much liked the modern approach to the theory of numbers and the use of the historical aspect.
I am in Ghana teaching at the University of Education Wnneba. How can a get some copies for the Departmental Library?
I can not give much detail review now until a get a copy of the book.

Customer Reviews:
Memory Jogger for Implementation of Basic Math Pre-Algebra.......2006-08-30
As so often happens, if not used,... forgotten!! This book refreshed my memory of high school basic math and Pre-Algebra. As I am now in an industry that utilizes math on a day by day, project by project basis, I've found this book to instrumental in my ability to succeed in my work.
Save yourself from frustration.......2006-04-28
I consider myself to be a fairly smart young man; more wits than anything. My math skills however are not exactly up to par. I can't really even remember the last time I had to use math other than basic adding and subtraction. I bought this book in hopes of getting re-acquainted with math and preparing myself for an upcoming Statistics class. The book does not go into detail, it doesn't explain itslef, it will say to do this and that, BUT WILL NOT SAY WHY! I am constantly trying to figure out the procedures for coming to each solution on my own. A couple years ago I bought a prep book and it was euphoric compared to this one. The book was an ASVAB prep book and covered many different areas than just math. The math section really helped me out a lot though. I cannot comprehend why people are praising this book, my guess is that they are are decent in math and for the most part are familiar with everything in the book. For me, it was like starting from scratch and this was not the book for me. If your in the same boat as me, I suggest going in a book store and looking around. Take some time practicing with the problems and see if you like how the problems are explained. In other words, don't buy a book you are going to regret buying.
Great for helping kids with homework........2006-04-26
I find it helpful refreshing my terminology when helping the kids with homework.
A Must for Those Looking for A Quick Math Refresher Course.......2004-12-01
For a college entrance requirement, I had to take a math assessment that I was a bit nervous about, seeing as how I haven't really done any math in a few months. However, when I found CLIFFS QUICKREVIEW: BASIC MATH AND PRE-ALGEBRA, my nervousness quickly faded. This book features every bit of "need to know" basic math and pre-algebra in a nutshell, instead of going on and on for pages, doing nothing more than confusing you. The format is great, and offers practice questions and answers, as well as easy ways to remember how to solve each problem. If you are looking for a quick refresher course in basic math and pre-algebra, this is the one book that you need.

really good.......2000-04-05
this book: 1. will help you solve 80% of the math the average person will encounter in their life, 2. [and if a parent] will allow you the math knowledge to allow you to help you to help your kids with their homework until they reach that age where they are sure that your to dumb and way to old to help them, anyway, 3. [if a student] only half listen to the 'really dull' math teacher and then learn it on your own - but it will really help if you listen and study on your own.

Customer Reviews:
This book is the pits.......2006-03-18
I am by no means a math wizard. I am, however, able to learn things on my own fairly well. This book makes that nearly impossible though. This book gives very few examples, and the few that they do give rarely give any clues to what needs to be done to solve the equations. It also fails to really teach anything. It's by no means for a student that is going to be going through an online course where they won't be interfacing with an instructor. I would not have enrolled into the course for online schooling if I had know this books was going to be this terrible. I strongly don't recommend this book!!!
Sadly disappointed.......2005-12-08
This text is a pathetic excuse for educational material. It gives meager examples and many are not even applicable to the chapter exercises. By far this is the poorest written text I have encountered in three years of college.
Now I'm scared! .......2005-08-28
I'm getting ready to take Intermediate Algebra using a text by this author. I will be required to take College Algebra next term and am hoping, after reading your reviews, that this is NOT the book that will be required for the class. Did anyone get value from "math help" websites? Thanks!
I think I know why they use this book.......2005-07-21
After reading the previous reviews for this book, I realized one question kept surfacing. Why? Why did my instructor choose this book?
A very likely answer is this book could have been chosen based on the margin of profit the school bookstore makes off of it. I don't know this for certain, but I have encountered similiar problems with texts chosen when I was in college. A useless, high-priced text book was often a sign of a greedy college bookstore. I would tend to suspect this when we were required to spend quite a bit for inferior texts--esp. ones that changed editions often (requiring you to buy the 'newest' book). The instructor may have had little to do with the choice.
I don't have much to say about this particular book, but when in this type of situation there are a few steps you can take. Attend every class and take good notes. If you notice most of the other students don't understand a particular concept, go to the instructor and ask that the lesson be repeated. Use the book only to work the assigned problems- use your notes for the methods.
Hope this helps!
College Algebra, 9th edition, by Lial.......2005-06-09
I just got done with taking my final in College Algebra using this textbook. I was extremely frustrated and stressed during the whole course because I just couldn't get it! This book did not explain enough and just quickly glossed over or assumed that you knew the info already. Definitely not written for students, but for professors already gifted in algebra!! Needless to say, I struggled through this whole course. I had to buy three other algebra books just to understand what this textbook left out. I would not recommend this textbook at all!

Has the best resale value of all Algebra texts........2007-03-21
I flunked algebra in high school. Now I'm taking a 095 algebra class at a local collage and now I'm getting A's and B's. It's a great book and ours came packaged with lecture CDs. It maybe the best algebra text book but you still have to do practice problems over and over to get good grades they don't just happen because the book was so good.
Perfect book to reintroduce algebra.......2004-04-07
I used this book in my first back-to-college algebra class, and it is a great book. Easy to understand explanations and step-by-step instructions made algebra way easier than I remembered! Please note: the companion solutions manual has many wrong answers. The book itself, however, is great. If your class is using this book, you will do well.
best math text I have ever used.......1999-10-01
I wish he had written all of my text books. Everything is clearly laid out with examples that are broken down into small steps to make understanding even clearer.

I would really like to thank Mr. Angel for putting together a great book. I have to admit that I was afraid of Algebra until I started studying from this book.
Thanks !
