Book Description

Powerful, flexible, easy to use-small wonder that the use of MAPLE® continues to increase, particularly since the latest releases of MAPLE. The built-in nature of its numerical and graphical facilities gives MAPLE a distinct advantage over traditional programming languages, yet to date, no textbook has used that advantage to introduce programming concepts. Moreover, few books based on MAPLE's latest versions even exist. Computing with MAPLE presents general programming principles using MAPLE as a concrete example of a programming language. The author first addresses the basic MAPLE functions accessible for interactive use then moves to actual programming, discussing all of the programming facilities that MAPLE provides, including control structures, data types, graphics, spreadsheets, text processing, and object oriented programming. Reflecting MAPLE's primary function as a computational tool, the book's emphasis is on mathematical examples, and it includes a full chapter devoted to algebraic programming. Classroom tested since 1995, the material in Computing with MAPLE is particularly appropriate for an intermediate-level introductory course in programming for both mathematics and computing students. It includes numerous exercises and test questions, with MAPLE worksheets, contact information, and supplementary material available on the Internet.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Language Guide For Maple.......2005-05-24

This is an excellent book. It is similar to a language guide for a standard programming language. All of the language constructs are covered. It is not a bunch of very simple examples constructed for an undergraduate math, engineering, or physics class. If you do anything serious with Maple, this book will be very useful for you. I have found no other similar books.

4 out of 5 stars learn programming with Maple?!.......2004-12-25

An intriguing, unorthodox approach to teaching programming. Wright uses Maple, a well known symbolic math package that has been around for over 10 years. He takes a recent version and uses it in the book as a programming language in its own right. We see descriptions of all the standard commands in any such language - if-else, loops etc. Logically complete as a computational language.

With the added bonus of teaching symbolic algebra.

    Book Description

This is a classroom-tested and developed textbook designed for use in either one- or two term courses in Partial Differential Equations taught at the advanced undergradute and beginning graduate levels of instruction. In addition to covering the standard PDE topics taught in such courses, there is a heavy focus on vector analysis. Maple examples and exercises for the students are presented strategically within the book, and an Appendix on Maple facilitates the use of this computer algebra language, acting as a quick reference source for readers. In addition, a cross-platform CD-ROM which is packaged with the text contains many analytical examples for students in the use of Maple. However, despite its general computational orientation, this book is designed so that it can also be readily used by instructors not wishing to bring the computational aspects of a computer algebra system into the classroom. This book will have strong appeal to interdisciplinary audiences of engineers and scientists, particulary in regard to its treatments of fluid mechanics, heat equations, and continuum mechanics, inclusion of the latter being a unique feature of the presentation.

    Book Description

Despite the fact that Maple V has become one of the most popular computer algebra systems on the market, surprisingly few users realize its potential in the field of scientific visualization. The purpose of this book is to equip the reader with a variety of graphics tools needed on the voyage of discovery into the complex and often beautiful world of curves and surfaces. A comprehensive treatment of Maple's graphics commands and structures is combined with an introduction to the main aspects of visual perception. Top priority is given to the use of light, color, perspective, and geometric transformations. Numerous examples, accompanied by pictures (many in color), cover all aspects of Maple graphics. The examples can be easily customized to suit the individual needs of the reader. The approach is context independent, and as such will appeal to students, educators, and researchers in a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines. For the general user at any level of experience, this book can serve as a comprehensive reference manual. For the beginner, it offers a user- friendly elementary introduction to the subject, with mathematical requirements kept to a minimum. For those interested in advanced mathematical visualization, it explains how to maximize Maple's graphical capabilities. In particular, this book shows how to turn Maple into an excellent modeling tool capable of generating elaborate surfaces that conventional modelers cannot produce. These surfaces can be exported to an external ray tracer (e.g. POV-ray) for sophisticated photo-realistic rendering. All of the Maple code segments which are presented in the book, as well as high-resolution pictures showing alternative renderings of some of the book's color plates, are included on the accompanying DOS diskette.

This is an excellent book for anyone who has solid knowledge of ODEs and wants to learn how to apply that knowlege to computer applications connected with ODEs. The book is useful... You can learn to use ODEs in a manner that is beyond the standards lectures--ODEs come alive with Maple V. Anyone with a love for ODEs will love this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great Refresher but Look Out!.......1997-07-25

This book is one of the best sources of information on differential equations I have seen. I took a differential equations course many years ago. Now that I need to understand the mathematics in financial derivative pricing, I find that the root are in differential equations. This book gives a great review of differential equations to owners of Maple. The examples are excellent. However, the book is plagued with typos that cost me a lot of hair and time. Otherwise, I recommend this book to anyone who wants to review this topic and has access to Maple. Not for the beginner though

Overall a nice book that delivers what it promises. It shows most of the commands maple has for solving & plotting diff eq. although after I finished it , I couldn't help feeling a bit ripped off . Maybe because almost more than half the book is filled with exercises. Further it should be noted that this book was obviously written as a supplement with the boyce & Diprima book in mind . Although it doesn't cover the higher chapters eg . boundery value prob. & fourier series .All 'n all, a quick intro in Maple with the diff eq in mind .If you use the boyce & Diprima book, it's worth having around , if you need to use Maple effectively.

This book's collection of laboratory investigations encourages students to spend their time on problem solving and conceptual understanding rather than on computation. In each session, the authors provide a statement of requisite Maple commands, a tutorial section, a description of the investigation, a statement that characterizes the "minimal project report" required, and project "Extensions" that are more challenging to complete. Topics include slopes of functions; graphs of polynomials; rational functions; Riemann sums; Taylor polynomials and convergence; and polar coordinates.

        Book Description

Many problems in classical mechanics can now be readily solved using computers. This text integrates Maple, a general-purpose symbolic computation program, into the traditional sophomore- or junior-level mechanics course. Intended primarily as a supplement to a standard text, it discusses all the topics usually covered in the course and shows how to solve problems using Maple and how to display solutions graphically to gain further insight. The text is self-contained and can also be used for self-study or as the primary text in a mechanics course.

We used this book as the textbook for a course on Classical Mechanics at Trinity Western University. The actual book was decent, but there were only about 6 practice questions (on average) for each of the 5 chapters. My professor had to resort to giving us supplementary material so we could cover all of the material of a University-level Mechanics class. The book was okay, but it could have used some work.
