Customer Reviews:
Managerial Statistics Text book.......2006-11-03
It was the text book the professor wanted me to buy.
It was good.
Sanjay Chheda.......2006-10-06
The book is very good with really good explanations and examples on descriptive analysis and inferential analysis.
Better Title: Intro to Statistics using Excel Add-ins.......2001-06-04
On the positive side, this book has many excellent case studies and examples. It is well written and interesting. However, I was disappointed, as I was expecting use of Excel to rigorously solve decision making and data analysis problems. The focus of the book is mostly traditional statistics solved using a group of commercial add-ins for Excel. If this is what you want, then the book would get five stars. However, for data analysis and decision making, I think a more thorough treatment using Excel without relying so much on the add-ins would have been appropriate.
Serious Excel 2000 Problem.......2001-04-12
The text book is great. I have many of Winston's other books and they are all great. The Palisade stuff works just fine. However, the StatPro Addin that accompanies this text does not work with MS Excel 2000. I contacted the IT guy that the authors directed me to--he was stumped. He just gave up and suggested I return my book for a refund because he could not figure out it out. Again, the book is great but the StatPro Addin sucks!
No trouble with Excel.......2001-01-31
I find the text and software a useful set of tools. It assumes familiarity with basic statistics and Excel, and builds on them to develop a powerfull ability to analize data and make decisions from it. I experienced no trouble with the software install or operation.

Book Description
As the cost of doing business increases, call centers and help desks are frequently moving overseas. How can your center remain competitive? Is pooling the best way to slash your wait times? James Abbott concisely answers these questions as he leads you through the world of process-centered customer service. Strategic and tactical terms, how to choose metrics to measure, and the miracle of Queuing Science are covered thoroughly, using easy-to-grasp anecdotes to explain the key technical topics.
Customer Reviews:
Required Reading For All Call Center Managers.......2006-01-23
James Abbott has produced a handbook that is required reading for all Call Center Managers. It provides a step-by-step method for metrics creation and why improvement is not possible unless you can measure Call Center activity.
This book must be on every employees desk in the Call Center and the Metrics should be based on this book. The books 11 chapters are easy to read and understand. James clearly outlines the reasons why metrics must be real time and the benefit in performance associated with this method.
You should read this book, as I did, just to understand how implementation of this methodology will cut costs and improve customer satisfaction.

Bringing Call Centers Into The 21st Century.......2005-12-01
From the introduction this book explains how metrics must be more than just numbers or report cards. They are proactive tools to get much more out of your call center. The book then sets out ways to create powerful metrics that lead to winning decisions for your center.
Chapter One: Having It All
The first chapter looks at why modern metrics are required in centers with numerous monitors. Old ways of thinking will not do. Everyday, real world examples are given to highlight critical metric sources. These are a must in balacing wait time, cost and performance.
Chapter Two: Call Center Metrics
This chapter begins with Abbott's signature approach to decision making and and the discussion of mstrics that compliment this approach. He introduces the unique Dependency Diagram and metric blueprint. On page 38 he lists six key proactive metrics.
Chapter Three: Monitoring Metrics
Chapter three makes cetain you are uaing clear thinking when monitoring your meticws. Again, real world examples and critical statistics are used to help you have a clear look at your center.
Chapter Four: Metric Dashboard
Using building blocks already mentioned this chapter begins putting together a call center dashboard. Who does what? How do we set it up? What is my part?
Chapter Five and Six: Tactical Decisions and Metrics
How do we know when real change has happened? What are the "alarms" to look for when monitoring the call center. We see how to read and use tactical metrics to avoid problems and run effective centers.
Chapters Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten: Strategic Decisions & Metrics
These chapters explain the strategic aspects of running your call center. They help you develop the strategic eye needed to bring your call center into the 21st century.
The book ends with a review of benefits that come from the effective use of metrics and how that is achieved. If you have the difficult responaibility of runing a call center, you need this book.
Excellent Book.......2005-11-11
I purchased this book as I am a director of a Call Center Unit. This book was very informative and had a lot to offer. Great books for excutives in the call center business! The book is written in a easy to read format with lots of great examples!
A book about metrics & statistics but not about call center.......2005-07-03
Based on the title I was expecting a lot about call center specific metrics. This is not the case. The focus is on statistics and metrics for tactical purpose (Quality Control Chart) and strategic view (Distribution, standard deviation). If you are familar with QC charts and statistics then the book does not have to offer a lot. For call center metrics it mentions only a few examples like abandonment rate or wait time in some sample. I was looking for an exhaustive list of call center metrics.
A Wakeup Call.......2004-07-15
"Abbott's book is a much-needed wakeup call. In order to compete, managers must use scientific methods, not gut feelings or hocus pocus. This book is back to basics--what needs to be monitored, why you need to monitor it, and who should make which decisions."

Book Description
This innovative book teaches readers to understand the strategic value of data and statistics in solving real business problems. Following principles of effective learning identified by educational and behavioral research, the instruction proceeds from tangible examples to abstract theory; from the big picture, or "whole," to details, or "parts"; and from a conceptual understanding to ability to perform specific tasks. While the computer is used for computational details, the authors describe the role of statistical thinking and methods for problem solving and process improvement to encourage use of the tools. Hoerl and Snee also teach skills to improve business processes, including collecting data appropriate for a specified purpose, recognizing limitations in existing data, graphically analyzing data using basic tools, deriving actionable conclusions from data analyses, and understanding the limitations of statistical analyses. In summary, the authors demonstrate that statistical thinking and methodology can help readers be more valuable and effective in their chosen careers.
Customer Reviews:
A good way to motivate students in other fields.......2006-10-24
Generally speaking, the students think that statistic is a collection of mathematical formulas that they have to know to be approved in their module.
This book helps to put statistic in the center of business process. Statistic becomes part of something and not a entity complete separated from the subject matter.
The weakness of the book is to change the usual order of descriptive, probability and inference.
A good book that any lecture who is interested in motivate students should own.
Misleading.......2004-11-10
Some parts of this book are quite good. The general problem solving strategies laid out in chapters 1 through 4 are effective and simple. However, the authors appear to display a lack of understanding of statistical inference and its limitations which can easily result in mistaken decisions by the unwary. There is a significant difference between the concept of P as the probability of getting particular data given that the null hypothesis is true, and the concept of the probability that the null hypothesis is true given that you have got the data, which these authors confuse. I bought this book and wish I hadn't wasted my money.
Absolutely Wonderful book.......2003-05-11
Used this book in a 400 level business statistics class, great book overall. Is quite a bit different from most statistics books that I have encountered, however I think that difference is what makes it so effective, this book has been a big eye-opener in viewing everything as a process. The book focuses on principals and the different tools that are available rather than focusing on drilling students with problems. I figure the authors understand that these days computers and statistics software is widely available, so the mathematics behind the techniques is only lightly touched upon. Book finishes up with some theory and a few useful appendixes that go more indepth into certain topics (such as surveying, probability distributions and process reengineering). This is also the book that introduced me to the wonders and excitement of experimental design, which it does a nice job introducing you and preparing you for more advanced texts such as Montgomery's Design of Experiments text.
teaching business statistics through ideas and strategy.......2002-09-10
Roger Hoerl is a famous industrial statistician who is currently the head of corporate research and development in statistics at a well known company where he took over recently when Gerry Hahn retired. In addition to his contributions to ridge regression Hoerl has written a number of fine statistical texts and has been very influential in emphasizing the growing need and demand for statistical methods in industry (work that may be done by non-statisticians). With the widespread availability of statistical software, the layperson is gaining the ability to do fairly sophisticated statistical analyses. For these people to be successful it is important that they understand the fundamentals and not just how to turn the crank on a particular procedure. Users of statistical methods must understand the concepts of variability and randomness and be able to know when statistical methodology can be helpful and when it cannot. This also means being able to question the underlying assumptions in a statistical model.
Hoerl and Snee accomplish this by teaching the principles and giving the student ideas to help him think statistically. This is different from the traditional approaches of most business statistics texts. Chapters 1 and 2 emphasize concepts before delving into techniques. Software tools...are introduced as needed. The underlying theory is well covered in chapter 9, but note that the authors have deliberately left the theory to the end of the book. The applications and illustration of techniques come first to teach the how and why. In the end the reader can be satisfied to learn the mathematical justification. Chapter 10 reviews what has been learned through two case studies and directs the student on how to take further steps to more advanced topics.

Fundamentals of Oil and Gas Accounting (4th Edition)
ASIN: 0124441742 |
Book Description
Oil exploration is a high-risk game. With worldwide drilling success of only 10% and a typical price tag of $15 million per well, it is no surprise the oil industry seeks better methods of managing financial risk.
Geological Risk and Uncertainty in Oil Exploration answers this need by identifying the various uncertainties associated with basin analysis and incorporating this information into probabilistic models of basin evolution in relation to oil accumulation.
Oil and gas explorationists, strategic resource economists, and petroleum professionals who deal with scientific uncertainty and risk issues will benefit from the books systematic treatment of how to quantify the uncertainty associated with a variety ofgeological, geophysical, and geochemical problems. The origin of uncertainties associated with flexural plate motion models, dynamical models of sediment evolution, thermal models of sediment maturation, hydrocarbon kinetic models, fault models, and models of basinal sediment fill and turbidite flows are detailed in the first section. The subsequent incorporation of model uncertainties into probabilistic models of basin evolution and behavior constitutes the second half of the book. Throughout, the author interweaves a discussion of scientific probability, risk, and strategy within the context of improving our ability to assess strategic hydrocarbon resources.
Key Features
* Integrates quantitative knowledge of basin analysis with scientific uncertainty and economic risk to create an informed, integrated hydrocarbon exploration strategy
* Instructs the reader in handling a variety of geological, geophysical, and geochemical problems by applying quantitative methods to determine uncertainty
* Is student-friendly--each chapter opens with a general introduction to the subject and concludes with a review and discussion of the major concepts
* Includes numerous appendices containing ancillary data, equations, and examples

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Guide.......2006-12-27
All or almost all significant clinical trials involve Data Monitoring Committees (DMCs; also known as Data Safety and Monitoring Committees; DSMBs). These bodies provide independent oversight of the safety and operation of clinical trials. This book is a well organized and clearly written discussion of the operation of DMCs/DSMBs. Very practically oriented, the book discusses virtually all aspects of DMCs/DSMBs from their rationale to the nuts and bolts of running committee meetings. In addition to being comprehensive, this book is distinguished by the liberal and appropriate use of numerous concrete examples to illustrate many of the issues that come up in the operation of a DMC/DSMB. This book should be read and owned by anyone serving on a DMC/DSMB. Anyone heavily involved in clinical trials should be familiar with the contents of this book.

Review after using Risk Analysis and the Security Survey.......2003-04-25
I bought the book to use as a reference while doing my very first risk analysis. It helped me a lot with my project. I found it easy to read and use as a reference. I used the format in the book as a guide when writing up the risk analysis I did.
If you haven't done one before and are looking for a good reference guide, this is a great resource.
clear direction on putting together a security survey.......2002-08-14
I have prepared several security surveys throughout the last couple of years and have always found that they were missing something. Once I started looking through this book I was given clear direction on the useful information required when conducting a security survey.
This book describes all the main sections required for a security review: Scoop of the project, organization assesment and requirements, physical security, internal controls, data system and records, emergency planning, and proprietary information, business impact analysis, survey questionary, etc.
This book goes into details on planning and analysis but does not give detailed techniques on aquireing information or what an effective security system looks like. It assumes the reader has a strong security background and is able to handle the details of investigation, interviewing, testing and evaluation. This book only touches on these topics.

"...this is one of the best books available for use as a textbook for a course and for an applied reference book. Its excellent organizational structure allows quick reference to specific models and its clear presentation coupled with the use of the QTS software solidifies the understanding of the concepts being presented. I highly recommend this book to educators and applied researchers."--IEE Transactions on Operations Engineering
Customer Reviews:
The Classic Queueing Theory Text.......1999-11-08
Fundamentals of Queueing Theory (third edition) by D. Gross and C. Harris is THE classic queueing text book. It is up-to-date, thorough, rigorous, intuitive, and even fun to read (for the mathematically inclined). This book can be read at different levels, none of them easy. It is intended for an audience of graduate students in operations research, industrial engineering, management science, or mathematics. There are other excellent queueing books out there, but this has to be the overall best seller! Highly recommended.

Book Description
Since its publication in 1987, Methods for the Economic Evaluation of Health Care Programmes has become the standard textbook in this field world-wide. Over the past ten years, the field of economic evaluation in health care has expanded considerably, with a rapid rise in the number of published studies, and wider recognition of their use in health care decision-making. Developments in economic evaluation have also led to the publication of several guidelines for study methodology, most recently those proposed by the United States Public Health Services Panel. The new edition of Methods for the Economic Evaluation of Health Care Programmes follows the same basic structure as the first edition. The key methodological principles are outlined using a critical appraisal checklist that can be applied to any published study. The methodological features of the basic forms of analysis (cost analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis, cost-utility analysis, and cost-benefit analysis) are then explained in more detail. The book has been greatly revised and enlarged, especially with respect to cost-utility and cost-benefit analysis, where major methodological developments have taken place. New to this edition are chapters on collecting and analysing data, and presenting and using economic evaluation results. The new edition will be required reading for anyone commissioning, undertaking, or using economic evaluations in health care, and will be popular with health service professionals, health economists, and health-care decision makers. Reviews of the first edition: 'An important contribution to studies on the economic evaluation of medical care...' (British Medical Journal) 'This is essential reading. Only if all managers are aware of the powers of economic techniques will they be used sensibly' (The Health Service Journal (UK) 'The methodological chapters on cost analysis and cost utility analysis are gems... should become the standard text on the subject at the intermediate level at which it is aimed.' (Medical Decision Making) 'It leaves nothing important in economic evaluation analysis untouched.' (Health Policy and Planning)
