Great book on optimal control.......2003-09-09
This is a fantastic book on optimal control especially for readers who do not have to learn the math as they go. It covers a wide range of problems in a variety of disciplines and is an interesting book. The approach is relatively modern although a differential geometric approach is not utilized. For those wanting a pretty complete treatment of the basics of optimal control this will be a good supplement to the usual suspects or even a good stand alone text. Although the mathematical requirements are not very great, the reader who has them firmly in hand will be the most successful.
Good book on optimal control.......2000-08-15
This is one of the best books on optimal control. It covers a wide range of interesting material including parameter optimization, optimization for systems with constraints, feedback control and singular solutions of optimization. The book can be useful in teaching courses in control theory. There are plenty of exercises included in the text.

Very good book........2007-05-09
A really good book for introduction to Optimal Control. As a Power System specialist, I acquired a very good comprehension about optimal control using such book.
Very good introduction.......2007-04-07
A complete introduction to optimal control theory, both from the point of view of dynamic programming and the Pontryagin's maximum principle. Ideal for starters like myself!
Classic that never goes out of style.......2006-04-19
My professor chosed this book to use in an Optimal Control class partly because it is very affordable. On top of that, its contents are superb, giving very clear explanations of the fundamental principles underlying Optimal Control for nonlinear/linear systems.
Despite its long history, I would think that all material are still relevant, although there are available more "modern" numerical techniques (it's still always good to know how things were done "back in those days"). I would grade this as a must-have for the beginning student in Optimal Control. I have always been a fan of Dover books, publishing quality books at rock bottom prices. This one has just reinforced my liking of Dover Publishing.
Practical Excellent Introduction.......2005-11-17
It is an excellent "first book" which is very easy to read and covers broad range of topics: Dynamic Programming leading to Hamilton-Jacobi using Bellman's principle, Calculus of Variations, Hamiltonian Equations, Pontryagin's principle and finally numerical solutions (two point boundary value problems based and using direct methods from operations research methods).
A Global Optimum of an Optimal Control Book.......2005-06-10
This book is very reader friendly. It introduces Dynamic Programming, Variational Calculus, Pontryagin Minimum Principle and in its final section some Numerical Methods. Despite being published in the seventies, this is a truly GOOD CLASSIC (there are bad classics).
In my opinion, to the student, Kirk is superior to Citron, to Athans and to Lewis (this is more recent), that is, this book is more concerned about teaching people. Athans is more encyclopedic but much more time-consuming to read.
With Kirk you will really learn the elements of optimal control theory.
Book Description
Numerous examples highlight this treatment of the use of linear quadratic Gaussian methods for control system design. It explores linear optimal control theory from an engineering viewpoint, with illustrations of practical applications. Key topics include loop-recovery techniques, frequency shaping, and controller reduction. Numerous examples and complete solutions. 1990 edition.

Great Reference Book.......2007-05-14
It is a great reference book; though I believe you could learn the subject matter from the book, I can't speak for it. I am currently a Phd Student in Astrodynamics focusing on formation flying and I have had a grad. level course on LQR/LQE, following that it is an excellent reference text if you need to look something up.
Book Description
In this book the longitudinal behavior of road vehicles is analyzed. The main emphasis is on the analysis and minimization of the fuel and energy consumption. Most approaches to this problem enhance the complexity of the vehicle system by adding components such as electrical motors or storage devices. Such a complex system can only be designed by means of mathematical models. This text gives an introduction to the modeling and optimization problems typically encountered when designing new propulsion systems for passenger cars. It is intended for persons interested in the analysis and optimization of classical and novel vehicle propulsion systems. Its focus lies on the control-oriented mathematical description of the physical processes and on the model-based optimization of the system structure and of the supervisory control algorithms. This text has evolved from a lecture series at ETH Zurich. Prerequisites are general engineering topics and a first course in optimal control theory.
Book Description
Graduate-level text provides introduction to optimal control theory for stochastic systems, emphasizing application of basic concepts to real problems.

You can find stuff here you can find nowhere else........2003-09-11
This book has been less influential on me than some others but nontheless I use it to find information on material that is almost impossible to find elsewhere in any kind of reasonable time. A broad range of topics is covered, not just optimal control. This has been particularly useful in understanding some the actual designs I have been asked to analyze.

Book Description
The long awaited second edition of
Dynamic Optimization is now available. Clear exposition and numerous worked examples made the first edition the premier text on this subject. Now, the new edition is expanded and updated to include essential coverage of current developments on differential games, especially as they apply to important economic questions; new developments in comparative dynamics; and new material on optimal control with integral state equations.
The second edition of
Dynamic Optimization provides expert coverage on:- methods of calculus of variations - optimal control - continuous dynamic programming - stochastic optimal control -differential games. The authors also include appendices on static optimization and on differential games.
Now in its new updated and expanded edition,
Dynamic Optimization is, more than ever, the optimum choice for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses in economics, mathematical methods in economics and dynamic optimization, management science, mathematics and engineering.
New features of
Dynamic Optimization will show students:advances in how to do comparative dynamics; how to optimally switch from one state equation to another during the planning period; how to take into account the history of the system governing an optimization problem through the use of an integral state equation; and how to apply differential games to problems in economics and management sciences.
Customer Reviews:
Great clear textbook.......2007-01-27
I believe this was the first textbook to introduce dynamic optimization to economists. It's simply and clearly written. Each chapter introduces a new development, goes into the theory behind it and gives examples, in just a few pages so you can go through it in bite-sized chunks. The style is unfussy but doesn't talk down to you. Two appendices explain important theorems in calculus and differential equations, briefly but in enough detail to be usable if you aren't familiar with those parts of the maths. This is an excellent textbook, although I can't compare it with the competition.
Chiang's book is best........2001-05-04
This book is decent, but I think that Chiang book is better that this book, I recommend "Elements of Dynamic Optimization" from Alpha Chiang (ISBN: 157766096X), it's better.
A must book for every serious economics student.......2001-02-15
There is no doubt that to master in advanced economics one should have a firm grasp on mathematical tools. Kamien and Schwartz's Dynamiz Optimization is the perfect book to this end. Actually it deserves a rating more than five stars.

Book Description
This is an introduction to optimal control theory for systems governed by vector ordinary differential equations, up to and including a proof of the Pontryagin Maximum Principle. Though the subject is accessible to any student with a sound undergraduate mathematics background. Theory and applications are integrated with examples, particularly one special example (the rocket car) which relates all the abstract ideas to an understandable setting. The authors avoid excessive generalization, focusing rather on motivation and clear, fluid explanation.

Book Description
There have been many wonderful developments in the theory of minimal surfaces and geometric measure theory in the past 25 to 30 years. Many of the researchers who have produced these excellent results were inspired by this little book--or by Fred Almgren himself.
The book is indeed a delightful invitation to the world of variational geometry. A central topic is Plateau's Problem, which is concerned with surfaces that model the behavior of soap films. When trying to resolve the problem, however, one soon finds that smooth surfaces are insufficient: Varifolds are needed. With varifolds, one can obtain geometrically meaningful solutions without having to know in advance all their possible singularities. This new tool makes possible much exciting new analysis and many new results.
Plateau's problem and varifolds live in the world of geometric measure theory, where differential geometry and measure theory combine to solve problems which have variational aspects. The author's hope in writing this book was to encourage young mathematicians to study this fascinating subject further. Judging from the success of his students, it achieves this exceedingly well.

An elegant application of differential geometry.......2006-04-18
This book is well-illustrated and motivates all of its theorems. In order to get anything out of this text, one should at least be familiar with basic algebraic topology of surfaces (I recommend Kinsey's "Topology of Surfaces" for beginners) and should know the calculus of differential forms and chains in Spivak's "Calculus on Manifolds". It makes for a good read aftwerwards.
