this was not a favorite class of mine, but this book got me through the worst of it!
Best Basic Statistical Text for Social or Policy Sciences.......2001-06-04
Excellent description of the purpose and procedures of basic statistical techniques. Uses simplified formulas, and does not get lost in the math. Easy to read and understand. Good for social science and public policy courses, including public administration. Only drawback: does not effectively incorporate computer applications.
Jack Levin, Elementary statistics in Social research.......2000-04-20
One of the best statistics books I can think of for social scientists who are not well aquainted with statistical procedures. The book is structured in several chapters, each concentrating on one statistical problem. In the first part of each chapter the theoretical background is given, followed by examples. Then, other examples are given, so that it becomes easily understandable how to correctly use the formulas respectively when they can't be used. Finally, there is a part of exercises where the reader may apply his new knowledge, before proceeding to the next chapter. However, it is just an introduction, not dealing with more complex statistical problems. Very recommendable for anyone who needs a solid basic knowledge in statistic or who wants how to start processing existing data.
Book Description
Written for successful study, every aspect of Elementary Statistics: Picturing the World has been carefully crafted to help readers learn statistics. Chapter topics cover an introduction to statistics, descriptive statistics, probability, discrete probability distributions, normal probability distributions, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing with one sample, hypothesis testing with two-samples, correlation and regression, chi-square tests and the F-distribution, and nonparametric tests. For individuals who want to learn statistics.

Great.......2005-09-30
I love the book, however it took longer than I thought it would to get to me.
Any teacher who chooses this text..........2005-06-01
is a complete moron. This text is SO poorly organized and poorly written that students have absolutely no clue come test time. There is a great deal of time spent on examples, but the examples are never explained. If you're asked why or how on a test, you'd be sunk. If your teacher requires this text for your stats class, find a different class!
textbook for class...company was great!.......2005-02-14
i bought this book here online after purchasing it at a school bookstore for $150. I saw this online and decided to order it anyway b/c it was way cheaper. The reason I did not order it first was b/c I had a bad experience w/ online ordering for class textbooks. It took forever. The class was basically over when I got it and the other book never came. I received it in less than a week and it was in great condition and even came with the solutions manual. I quickly returned my other books to the bookstore for a refund. I will def. buy here again. Great experience.
Elementary Statistics by Larson et al........2004-02-17
This work is geared for the above average arts or business
student. It has a good coverage of the various probability
density functions and hypothesis testing and evaluation. A typical chapter has important definitions set forth, a "Try
It Yourself" problem set, notes to the instructor, numerous
exercises and an exhaustive summary. In chapter 1, the four levels of measurement are depicted. i.e. Nominal, Ordinal,
Interval and Ratio . The author provides a simple experimental
design consisting of identifying variables, developing a
detailed plan for collecting data, actual data collection,
descriptive statistics techniques and inferential statistics.
This book could be covered in one semester with the following
organization:
Data Collection Chapter 1
Scales, frequency Chapter 2
Probability Chapter 3
Distributions Chapter 4
Normal Distribution Chapter 5
Confidence Intervals Chapter 6
Hypothesis Testing Chapter 7
Correlation/Regression Chapter 9
Moving Averages
Chi Square Chapter 10
Theory of Expected Value
General Review and Finals
The appendix of the work contains an excellent presentation
on how to find areas under the standard normal curve. Overall,
the work presents a very ambitious agenda aimed at the
above-average collegiate student. The book could be supplemented
with the Schaum's Outline in Statistics. Students may utilize
a statistical calculator to assist with the work of the course.
Confusing!.......2003-08-11
I had to purchase this book for an online stats course - BIG mistake! The organization of the book is so incredibly confusing, and the "expanding the basics" problems are not illustrated in the chapter, nor do they have answers with which to check your answers. I have taken other reasoning courses (in class and online) and they were organized much better, with relevant examples that explained every step -- perfect for anyone who is basically trying to teach him/herself! I hope mathematics teachers nationwide realize how difficult this text is for students to follow. Consider another text!
Book Description
Emphasizing the practical aspects of survey problems, ELEMENTARY SURVEY SAMPLING (WITH CD-ROM) is an ideal introduction to survey sampling. The textbook first covers the role of sample surveys in the modern world, then includes individual chapters that introduce a sample survey design or estimation procedure by describing the pertinent practical problem. You'll see the methodology proposed for solving the problem and the details of the estimation procedure, including a compact presentation of the formulas needed to complete the analysis, followed by a practical example worked out in complete detail. Chapter-ending exercises give you practice with the techniques and stretch your grasp of ideas.
Customer Reviews:
This book is a disaster.......2007-06-14
This text is in its sixth edition and contains all types of errors. The text doesn't bother to even give the slightest idea of how expressions are derived. Many of the formulas are incorrect. Some of the exercises are absurd. The solutions manual is no better. My recommendation is that you buy either Cochran text if you're mathematically inclined or Yamane's Elementary Sampling Theory for a more hands-on text. Don't waste your time or money on this text.
I think this book is a waste of money. .......2007-02-11
I think this book is almost completely worthless. All it contains is 30 blank pages and 30 pages of definitions, most of which have nothing to do with statistics. For example, there are definitions of gain, union, voucher, strike, closing, journal, and firm.
Amazon's description of the book is also misleading. The statement that "Cram101 Textbook Outlines gives all of the outlines, highlights, notes, and practice-tests for your textbook." is completely wrong. You have to buy this material from their website.
I would have returned this book except it wasn't worth the shipping cost. Amazon wouldn't pay for the return since they sent me the book I ordered.
If you are taking survey stats save your money and ask your TA or professor to answer your questions.

Handbook of Research on the Education of Young Children
ASIN: 0335209025 |
Book Description
There are a growing number of courses on early childhood education at university level. This has placed new demands on both students and staff as research is a key feature of many of these courses. Research training is an important element in both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in early childhood education and there is a genuine need for an accessible textbook that addresses the particular research issues which are a feature of this important field.
Doing Early Childhood Research introduces the most common qualitative and quantitative methods in the early childhood context. The contributors cover a wide range of conventional and newer approaches including observation, surveys, action research, ethnography, policy analysis and poststructuralist approaches. The reader is shown step by step how to select a topic, review the literature, design their research project, analyse data and produce a report.
Throughout the emphasis is on practical application of the methods and the text is illustrated by a wide range of examples and case studies. Each chapter includes checklists, explanations of key concepts, annotated further reading and questions for reflection.
Written by leading international early childhood researchers, this book is a standard introduction to research in the early childhood field.

Superb Starting Point For Understanding EC Research!.......2007-05-18
Boy, oh boy! This is a wonderful text!
Glenda Naughton has written on deconstruction, politics, and ethics in early childhood education, but here she just gives us the basics from a has of experts.
The best part about this book is how the concepts go from the simple to the complex. It starts off with quantitative (mean, mode, standard deviation, chi square, correlation, regression, etc.) and moves to the qualitative (surveying, interviewing, observationa/participatory research, ethnography, naturalistic design).
Its an excellent starting point for EC pros looking to better understand scholarly journals. It stops just short of multilevel modeling. I suggest you get a good qualitiatve textbook and quantitative textbook to go along with it.
Very Nice!

Originally published by Houghton Mifflin in 1977, this excellent volume makes basic statistical concepts and techniques genuinely meaningful to the beginning student by using a reasonably rigorous developmental treatment that is easily understood.
Customer Reviews:
Instructive.......2003-10-31
Statistics is not an easy subject to explain. In this introductory text, the authors attempt this difficult challenge. They explain, "In short, this book has to do with the interpretation of statistical techniques." It is explained that for numbers to have significance, they must be interpreted.
Three classifications are presented in an overview study of this nature: 1) descriptive statistics 2) statistical inference, and 3) prediction or regression. Each of these three categories are included in this book.
There are 19 chapters covering the topics one would expect to be found in such a book. While the opening chapter begins with a background and introduction, the concluding chapter deals with sampling-error theory for simple linear regression. In between there are subjects such as; frequency distribution, percentile ranks, symbolic representation of data, and so on.
