1 out of 5 stars Lacking in going from abstract to application.......2007-09-23

This review is for the 11th edition of the book. I am using this for a business math course and overall the book is lacking. Many of the examples presented in the chapters are simplistic and have no relation to the difficulty of the application examples. It's unfortunate that the solutions manual while containing the solutions to the examples does not go into more detail in how to solve these type of problems. While it appears the authors goal is to go from abstract to application, he misses the mark. I find myself consulting external resources for almost every chapter. Not recommended.

They sent me the wrong book. I ordered the Finite Mathematics for Business Economics, Life Sciences and Social Sciences (10th Edition)by Raymond A. Barnett and received the solution manual. I feel very disapointed with this purchase.

1 out of 5 stars NOT USER FRIENDLY!.......2005-09-08

I am using this textbook for my Math for Business and Economics class and it is terrible. This book is not written taking into consideration the audience "Business Majors". Concepts are better explained in the Chapter review than under the sections they are being presented. There is only 1 example for each new concept and definitions are written using one or two definitions of new concepts within it. If this book is intended to take the student from the abstract concept to the real world it sure doesn't do this. I understood the material better in my Intermediate Algebra class than I do now.

4 out of 5 stars Sound choice for a finite math textbook.......2004-06-27

This is a very sound choice as a textbook for a course in finite mathematics. The coverage is appropriate, the level suitable for the non-math major, the explanations are excellent and the authors take the title seriously.
The topics are covered in the following order:

* Elementary functions and their graphs.
* The mathematics of finance.
* Matrices and systems of linear equations.
* Linear inequalities and linear programming.
* Logic, set theory and basic counting.
* Probability and probability distributions.
* Basic game and decision theory.
* Markov chains.

There are many exercises and at the end of each section there is a set of basic exercises followed by a collection of applied problems. The set of applied problems is split into three categories: business & economics, life sciences and social sciences. Since finite mathematics is often a preparation for students to work in these fields, this format is what impressed me the most. With all of these "real world" problems to work as part of their study, no student using this book could ever legitimately say that they see no purpose to their studies. Solutions to the odd-numbered problems are included.
I came into contact with this book after my choice of textbook was irrevocable. Had I seen it earlier, it would have been the one I used.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best finite book but good enough.......2006-09-26

In the last three years, I have been using "Finite Mathematics: An Applied Approach"
by Sullivan and Abe Mizrahi in my finite class. While the book is adequate, I didn't consider it exceptional. I recently examined "Finite Mathematics" by Frank Wilson and consider it the book that I will use if and when I teach finite again. Since I am always on the lookout for new and better books, I examined this one as well.
I rank it lower that the Wilson book and slightly higher than the Sullivan book. The order and depth of coverage is equivalent to the Sullivan book and there is the usual amount of exercises at the ends of the sections. Answers to most of the odd-numbered ones are included. The exposition is slightly better that that in Sullivan but not a good as in Wilson. Example/solution is the technique used and there are sections on how to solve the problems using a TI-83 and with Microsoft Excel. I don't use these technology aids in my class, the students have enough trouble learning the concepts of the math, so I don't burden them any further. However, if you do use those techniques in your class, then you will find these sections helpful.
While I will say that I could use this book in my finite class, I won't for the simple reason that I found a book that I consider superior.

1 out of 5 stars College book for finite mathematics.......2007-07-12

This is one of the worst math books I have ever had the pleasure of using.
I usually always make A's in mathematics, and am also in Honors, but this book is a fight to understand.

The answers in the back are wrong very often, about 1-3 times per exercise. There are about 4-7 exercises per chapter @ 10 chapters. This is extremely frustrating when learning new facets of mathematics. This book is being used at University I am attending, and is not worth this level of education. The instruction in the book is very confusing, by jumping from idea to idea with no flow. First the errors have to be filtered out before any learning can be done. The course I am taking is an online course, so without a live instructor to give the correct information, one leaves completely confused. I have emailed my professor at least once per chapter to confirm my correct answer against the wrong answer in the book. Or the answer key may have extra answers i.e. problem 11 may have questions a, b, and c, and the key will have answers for a, b, c, d, and e.

TO ANY EDUCATOR LOOKING TO USE THIS BOOK FOR THE CLASSROOM, PLEASE CONSIDER ANOTHER RESOURCE, THIS BOOK IS OF VERY POOR QUALITY. Pearson should be ashamed to allow such bad editing to make it to consumers. This is the 9th (Ninth) edition printed in 2007. Math does not change enough to have such bad errors. Nor should any book be so jumbled.

4 out of 5 stars No problem being used as a finite math text.......2005-08-24

This book is not nearly as bad as the other reviews indicate. I teach a course in finite mathematics at the college level and I examined it for possible adoption as a textbook. While it is not the best text I have seen, so I will not be using it, the quality is just below that of the book I use. Therefore, I would have no trouble using this book in my class.
The coverage in college courses in finite mathematics is standard and this book adheres to those standards. Topics are introduced via worked examples; there are exercises at the ends of the sections and review questions at the end of the chapters. The writing is clear, and the explanations are thorough. Solutions to the odd numbered exercises and all of the review exercises are included. While I hesitate to strongly recommend this book as a text, there is no delay in saying that it is one of the better options available.

1 out of 5 stars Finite Mathematics=Infinite Frustrations.......2005-06-17

I would give this thing -10 stars or more if it were an option from the pull-down menu. The text is little more than a workbook; it has little explanation to go along with the problems you will get assigned as homework. I attend a large university so compounding this problem is the level of math this text is for, freshmen. Freshman classes are taught by "lecturers", or graduate students who, while very knowledgeable of their field, have little or no teaching experience so prove to not be able to effectively fill in the numerous blanks this book leaves. Also, these size of these classes tend to be in the hundreds and with the lecturer himself/herself being a student as well, can not devote the time needed to teach this subject because of the strains their own course loads put on them. Also this book claims that it "aims to provide students with the quantitative skills needed for their chosen fields and to lay the foundation for more advanced courses in mathematics."(qtd. by Amazon from Book News, Inc.) My college uses this text for Business Mathematics but having worked before attending college I can not recall some of the examples in the book as being used in my office...ever. As an example the book uses the old "bag full of different colored marbles, probability of pulling out a given color" exercise. There is also the "5 people on a row of 8 seats in a movie theater different combinations" exercise. That might have been just the example the lecturer picked but I saw no real exercises in accounting and such. The book also assumes that there is no software or calculators in existence to figure out compund interest and such other things so one has to painfully struggle through word problems with one example that is supposed to fit the dozens of different problems given in the book. So, if you are a weak math student like me, prepare to ask lots of questions and go to office hours regularly to beg for help when this book has no explanations. All in all this book leaves you scratching your head unless you already know the math concepts in the book(in which case you should not be taking a class that uses this text). Anyone who has a choice of what text to get should avoid this one. Also, if you can take a course with a different text then by all means do so. I would flush this thing if it would fit in the toilet.

1 out of 5 stars Worst mathematics text I have ever encountered........2003-10-25

This was the required text for my Finite Mathematics class. There is absolutely no detailed information. Students have virtually no tools to apply to problem solving. Apparently there is also no student workbook to demonstrate the steps that Tan failed to illustrate in this text. Slow painful torture is preferable to the struggle one faces when trying to make progress through this textbook.

1 out of 5 stars Undoubtedly the worse math textbook I have ever seen.......2000-05-20

This was the text book that was used in a course I took in Finite Math. Do not waste your time or money on this book. It does not go into any depth whatsoever, many of the thereoms shown were just pulled out of the authors hat without any proof of any kind. I honestly, had a hard time staying awake as I would read it, since it is so dull. It places far too much emphasis on phony applications and almost known on good solid theory. I only wish I could give this book a negative rating.

Book Description

This book has been thoroughly revised and updated to reflect developments since the third edition, with an emphasis on structural mechanics. Coverage is up-to-date without making the treatment highly specialized and mathematically difficult. Basic theory is clearly explained to the reader, while advanced techniques are left to thousands of references available, which are cited in the text.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-08-26

It explains the the hard concepts in a nice way. But the material covers the great extent of FEA.

It is good for reference.

2 out of 5 stars Another student prospective.......2007-05-30

The comments left are interesting in that all the people teaching from it find it useful, and all the students find it frustrating...there is a trend here!

I agree that the explanations are great in detail and the content practical, but at a graduate level with minimal support from the professor and no TA available, not having examples or solutions (to the odds or evens at the very least) is infuriating. After spending close to $100 for this text, I had to go out to buy another with some problems to make it through my course. Two stars for readability, will pile the other three onto the review for my other text.

If a professor recommends this book for his course, my suggestion would be to go talk to some fellow students who have already taken the course to be sure you know what you are signing up for!

1 out of 5 stars A collection of papers at best.......2006-06-16

I am a graduate student of solid mechanics and I have read quite a few books on FEA. Of all the textbooks I have read-this is clearly the worst. The authors don't spend any time to make the material coherent and organized. They seem to have published this book just for the sake of establishing their names in the field. It is basically a collection of research papers on the subject. The worst part of the book is that the authors use excessive verbiage to describe extremely inportant concepts with little or no mathematics. This leaves the readers confused and disoriented. This book is not for those looking for an introductory text and is useless to even those experienced in the field. Avoid this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not an undergraduage text.......2006-05-16

This book was used to 'introduce' us to finite element analysis. To say the least, the book is very hard to follow. For an undergraduate text book, I don't recommend it at all. The problems are very difficult and assume you have a lot of knowledge on other subjects. Also there are close to no examples. This would be a great book for graduate classes or those seriously interested in the theory, but not for the intro introductory class, unless you have a super great professor. Because of my bad experience with the book, and how I found it difficult to grasp, I give it only two stars.

3 out of 5 stars In need of a solutions manual.......2004-10-12

The material in this book is great, but I think the problems are difficult. I am in need of a solutions manual. Please contact me at jjoseph86@hotmail.com if you know where I can get one.

This book contains an introduction to hyperbolic partial differential equations and a powerful class of numerical methods for approximating their solution, (including both linear problems and nonlinear conservation laws). These equations describe a wide range of wave propagation and transport phenomena arising in nearly every scientific and engineering discipline. Several applications are described in a self-contained manner, along with much of the mathematical theory of hyperbolic problems. High-resolution versions of Godunov's method are developed, in which Riemann problems are solved to determine the local wave structure and limiters are applied to eliminate numerical oscillations. The methods were orginally designed to capture shock waves accurately, but are also useful tools for studying linear wave-progagation problems, particulary in heterogenous material. The methods studied are in the CLAWPACK software package. Source code for all the examples presented can be found on the web, along with animations of many of the simulations. This provides an excellent learning environment for understanding wave propagation phenomena and finite volume methods.

5 out of 5 stars an excellent book on hyperbolic equations.......2005-10-18

The author gave almost all the basic knowledge related to hyperbolic equation, at least from the engineering point of view. I read it myself without any help. It's not hard to understand. Moreover, it gives all you need at beginning references.

5 out of 5 stars Good book to start with. Highly recommended........2003-10-24

This book starts from simple things and moves to pretty complicated staff graciously. It is useful even as an introduction to the hyperbolic equations. Finally, this is the only book I use at most every day. This is the book I would strongly recommend to all students who study this field and to researchers. It has a very good and comprehensive reference.

The author develop even the software (unfortunately, this is FORTRAN, not C). The source is available and well discussed in the book (there is a whole chapter). I did not use it but found this is a very good practice. It should be useful for student also.

Many things are really nice. For example, the book gives a very good view of the nature of oscillations in high order schemes, not only formulas. And so on...

However, there are few things I was not satisfied.

      1. There are no comprehensive discussion about non-uniform and non-rectangular grids. It is not good, for example, for people who works in spherical coordinates (for example in some brunches of geophysics).

      2. There is no information about FCT methods that are still very popular because they give a very straightforward way to use 4th and higher order methods. However, there is a reference to the Oran and Boris book, for instance.

      3. It is sometimes really pure mathematical description especially for non-linear equations. It was really inconvenient for me. Fortunately, good reference helped.

There are more things were bothered. However, this is personal. The author works with the advection equation a lot, but does not like to discuss more the conservation form of continuity equation which I would prefer. In spite of author's efforts, I think still that the wave propagation method is not so convenient as flux method even for non-conservative equations. But it depends.

Finally, this book is definitely fine and, I think, it is the best among all books in this field (maybe except the Hirsch book which is "Numerical computation of internal and external flows" 1988). I would highly recommend it to buy.

      5 out of 5 stars nice introduction.......2003-07-11

This book provides a nice introduction to the mathematics behind finite-volume methods. After reading through the first half of the book on scalar conservation laws and systems, papers in JCP no longer seem as intimidating. The book is laid out very well, and the notation is consistent throughout. It is the best of the bunch when compared to Toro's Riemann problem book and Laney's Computational Gasdynamics text.

4 out of 5 stars Better than the one I use, but not by enough to change.......2005-10-20

I recently evaluated this book as a possible textbook for the finite mathematics class that I teach. A great deal of space is devoted to the use of technology using a TI-83 graphing calculator and Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. Images of the calculator and computer screens are used to demonstrate the solutions. While I don't use either technology in my class, the presence of the technology solutions had no affect on my opinion of the book.
I would have little difficulty using the book and my students would have no difficulty reading it. The explanations are easy to follow and at a level suitable for the background we require of our students. There are a large number of exercises and the coverage is ordinary. By ordinary, I mean that the covered topics are the standard ones in a college level course in finite mathematics and the order of presentation is a natural one.
In the end, I chose to stick with the book that I have been using. As a general rule, I change books only when I find one that is significantly better and in this case I did not. This book is a good one and even slightly better than the one I am currently using. I just don't believe that the difference is enough to justify the change.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Choice.......2005-09-20

I was very satisfied with my results and the sender got my book sent to me extremely quick.

2 out of 5 stars I'm glad I'm the teacher and not the student!!!.......2005-02-10

Wow. This book is bad. I have to use this book -- chosen by the department -- for a class I'm teaching. The fact that the book is a bad choice for this class is not the fault of the book -- I was given the text with instructions to teach chapters 1 - 4, 10, and 11, and then to use extra material for topics not covered in the book -- clearly, this text does not fit the class, and either the course should be redesigned, or a different text should be chosen.

Anyway, a first glance was enough to see how miserably this book is organized. The first chapter covers:
        1.1 Coordinate Systems and Graphs
        1.2 Linear Inequalities
1.3 The Intersection Point of a Pair of Lines
1.4 The Slope of a Straight Line
1.5 The Method of Least Squares

So, section 1.2 is dependent on 1.3 which is dependent on 1.4 -- isn't the order a bit backwards? And then in 1.5, you're on to a topic which is a huge leap in difficulty from learning how to plot a point on Cartesian coordinates from 1.1. Unbelievable.

This type of interdependence carries on through all of the sections of the book that I've looked at (admittedly not all). It seems that one must already know the material from further ahead in the book in order to use the book to learn the material in the given chapter.

I believe that by this Eighth Edition of the book, the authors should be removed from it -- it should be given to students using this text without already knowing it all, and let those students revise and edit the continuity of the material.

Matrix notation is introduced, virtually without explanation of either how to use it or why. Examples are given that attempt to show how to perform some operations on a TI-83 (or similar) calculator, but these efforts fail miserably.

Frankly, I'm having a hard time even figuring out what it is that this book is trying to teach -- and I already understand the material! If, however, the goal of the book is to confuse students such that they should hate and fear all math courses, then the authors have achieved their goals.
