Book Description
Fundamentals of Space Systems was developed to satisfy two objectives: the first is to provide a text suitable for use in an advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate course in both space systems engineering and space system design. The second is to be a primer and reference book for space professionals wishing to broaden their capabilities to develop, manage the development, or operate space systems. The authors of the individual chapters are practicing engineers that have had extensive experience in developing sophisticated experimental and operational spacecraft systems in addition to having experience teaching the subject material. The text presents the fundamentals of all the subsystems of a spacecraft missions and includes illustrative examples drawn from actual experience to enhance the learning experience. It included a chapter on each of the relevant major disciplines and subsystems including space systems engineering, space environment, astrodynamics, propulsion and flight mechanics, attitude determination and control, power systems, thermal control, configuration management and structures, communications, command and telemetry, data processing, embedded flight software, survuvability and reliability, integration and test, mission operations, and the initial conceptual design of a typical small spacecraft mission.

Experts Define the State of the Art in Spacecraft Design.......2005-08-17
This book is on the design of spacecraft. In order to have the most up to date information available, each chapter is written by an expert in the particular field covered by that chapter. Looking at the brief introduction of the writers shows that most of them have been involved in the design of actual spacecraft for the John Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. These people have been actually working on the subjects they discuss.
This is the second edition of the book, published in 2005 to reflect the latest changes in the technology and science of spacecraft systems engineering that have occurred since the publication of the first edition.
Second an attempt has been made to make the material more suitable for a space systems course as a prerequisite to a senior class project to design and perhaps build and launch a spacecraft or spacecraft instrument.
The structure of the book is to break down the spacecraft into a number of sub-systems to a depth that should permit the reader to carry out a conceptual design.
This book describes the state of the art as it exists for spacecraft design.

Fundamentals of Photonics Review.......2007-09-24
The book arrived in great condition, but I bought it new. This is a great text for Senior students with an EE or Elctro-Optics background. It would also be a great text for first year Master's students. The book tries to do a bit of everything and is a great reference for anyone interested in optics to the professional optical/electrical engineer.
One of the Essential Books of Optics to Own.......2007-07-24
If you are in the field of optics or biomedical optics, there are three to four books which would be the most essential to own. The is one of them. This book is comprehensive, dealing with all the most critical areas in field, yet easy to read. It is either outstanding in understanding the most basic concepts, yet a phenomenal reference on the derivations of relationships whose origin is left to the imagination in most textbooks. This is a must buy.
A very good reference book .......2007-07-12
I found out about this book when I was looking for some materials on Photonics Switching and Computing. These topics and All-Optical Switches and Bistable Optical Switches, Optical Interconnections are covered in Chapter 21
But Chapter 22 containing Fiber-Optic Communication is very brief and for more detail one needs to go look for Kaiser's book.
All in all this book tries to encompass all the components in PHOTONICS and in doing so lacks the depth in some topics. But the good thing is that the references and journal publications are listed at the end of each chapter.
Part of Saleh and Teich's great legacy - a truly classic text.......2007-07-10
If you could only have one general photonics book - this is the one to have. It must have been a 'labor of love' to write - and it is truly outstanding in its comprehensiveness and clarity.
I use it constantly - wouldn't be without it.
2nd Ed looks great, encyclopedic coverage, up-to-date-topics .......2007-04-06
This book is well-illustrated and has very readable, qualitative, and often quantitative descriptions of many topics. It does not go into great detail on many of the advanced or newer topics it mentions. This is an introductory book. Many people learn a topic best by first reading a semi-quantitative account, and then going on to higher-level detailed graduate level books or papers if they find the effort on that topic is warranted. For example, if one see "whispering gallery mode" in some article, and wants to know more, one can find a nice figure and a brief qualitative description in this book. Now, the description in the book is not enough to design anything, but it is adequate for a reader to have some understanding and decide if he or she needs or wants to know more about this topic. Let's give the authors credit for even including such topics - how many books do you have that even mention whispering gallery modes? Similar comments can be made about APDs using thin multiplication regions to lower noise, or the use of strain in semiconductor lasers to improve performance, etc. I think this book is very useful as an undergraduate text or as the first (but not final) book you will want to consult when studying a new topic.

Book Description
Ideal for courses in aerosol science or particle technology, Smoke, Dust, and Haze: Fundamentals of Aerosol Dynamics, 2/e, is the only modern text that focuses on aerosol dynamics--the study of the factors that determine changes in the distribution of aerosol properties with respect to particle size. It covers fundamental concepts, experimental methods, and a wide variety of applications. Using the aerosol dynamics approach, the author integrates a broad range of topics including stochastic processes, aerosol transport theory, coagulation, formation of agglomerates, classical nucleation theory, and the synthesis of ultrafine solid particles. The book makes extensive use of scaling concepts and dimensional analysis and emphasizes physical and physicochemical interpretations. Basic concepts are illustrated by applications to many fields including air pollution control, the atmospheric sciences, microcontamination in the semiconductor industry, and the industrial manufacture of powders, pigments, additives, and nanoparticles. Revised and expanded, this second edition features new chapters on the kinetics of agglomeration of noncoalescing particles and the fundamentals of aerosol reactor design. It covers the effects of turbulence on coagulation and gas-to-particle conversion and also discusses the formation of primary particles by the collision-coalescence mechanism. The chapter on the atmospheric aerosol has been completely rewritten within the aerosol dynamics framework. Its basic approach and topicality make Smoke, Dust, and Haze: Fundamentals of Aerosol Dynamics, 2/e, an essential guide for both students and researchers.

Very good analyzed.......2001-07-22
This book offered a very good description of the related problem. All the aspects of the problem are explaned in details.
Book Description
In the last few years there has been significant progress in the development of microfluidics and nanofluidics at the application as well as at the fundamental and simulation levels. This book provides a comprehensive summary of these changes describing fluid flow in micro and nano configurations. Where as in their previous book entitled Microflows: Fundamentals and Simulation the authors covered scales from one hundred nanometers to microns (and beyond), in this new book they discuss length scales from angstroms to microns (and beyond). While still maintaining the emphasis on fundamental concepts with a mix of semianalytical, experimental, and numerical results, this book outlines their relevance to modeling and analyzing functional devices.
The text has been divided into three main subject categories: gas flows; liquid flows; and simulation techniques. The majority of the completely new developments in this book are in liquid flows and simulation techniques chapters with modified information throughout the rest of the book.
This book can be used in a two-semester graduate course. Also, selected chapters can be used for a short course or an undergraduate-level course. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers in fluid mechanics, physics, and in electrical, mechanical and chemical engineering.
Review of earlier volume:
Applied Mechanics, 2002: "Among recent books that addressed the physics of micro devices, the present one ... is perhaps the best of the bunch. ... Microflows: Fundamentals and Simulation has a lot to offer and is certainly recommended as a good place to start for MEMS students interested in flow physics."
Customer Reviews:
An excellent book on Micro and Nanoscale flows.......2005-12-02
I believe this is an excellent reference for anyone interested in the field of microfluidics and nanofluidics. When I got the first edition, I was always thinking that the addition of a few chapters on nanoscale fluid flows would make this book a comprehensive monograph for people who have background in conventional fluid mechanics and want to understand the micron and submicron fluid flows phenomena. The authors have done this in the new edition "current edition". It is a well-organized book that makes it easy for reader, especially for graduate students who want to start their research in MEMS and NEMS and for professors who are looking for a reference for their course. The book covers all aspects of micro and nanoflows in terms of their characteristics, scaling effects, and methodologies and approaches that can be used for modified continuum and molecular simulations.
The Book on MicroFlows.......2002-06-07
I was fortunate enough to be given a chance to read the manuscript of this book about a year before it was published. I was looking for a source of general information on fluid issues in MEMS in order to acquaint myself with the subject. Even though many research papers are out there, the new reader to the field needs to be given a solid starting point. Being a well-written research monograph, this is that solid starting point for those who have a grasp of traditional fluid mechanics and want to enhance that understanding for research into MEMS devices and flows encountered at micron scale and below.
Now that the book is printed, I used it as the main source of reading for an Indep. Study course for a graduate student who started his PhD studies recently.
The book also provides a wealth of references that will assist the reader to get a deeper understanding of the specific subject.
Review of Microflows.......2002-02-12
This is an excellent book and I recommend this to any one interested in microfluidics, MEMS or nanotechnology. To my knowledge, this is the first book on microfluidics. The chapters on gas flows, electrokinetically driven liquid flows and on numerical methods for continuum and atomistic simulation are very interesting.

Ultrasonic Waves in Solid Media

Ultrasonics (Mechanical Engineering (Marcell Dekker))
ASIN: 0849301300 |
Book Description
Ultrasonics. A subject with applications across all the basic sciences, engineering, medicine, and oceanography, yet even the broader topic of acoustics is now rarely offered at undergraduate levels. Ultrasonics is addressed primarily at the doctoral level, and texts appropriate for beginning graduate students or newcomers to the field are virtually nonexistent. Fundamentals and Applications of Ultrasonic Waves fills that void. Designed specifically for senior undergraduates, beginning graduate students, and those just entering the field, it begins with the fundamentals, but goes well beyond the simple, general concepts of waves to a detailed treatment of ultrasonic waves in isotropic media. Addressing a wide range of topics, the author focuses on the physics of acoustic waves, their propagation, and the different modes that can be excited in various geometries. Strong emphasis on applications in the later chapters provides a concrete setting for the more formal and theoretical earlier discussions. Your search for the right introduction to ultrasonics is over. The clear, engaging prose, careful balance of theory and applications, and rigorous but accessible mathematical treatments in this book combine to build a solid foundation either for practical work in the field or moving on to higher-level studies.
Customer Reviews:
Only buy it as a last resort!.......2003-10-02
Fundamentals and Applications of Ultrasonic Waves, one of the most current books on this subject matter to be widely available within the past few years, attempts to go from the basics of acoustics and ultrasonics through acoustic devices and applications to a few specialty topics towards its conclusion. While it does contain plenty of information and elucidates some topics that may be difficult to find in similar works it has unfortunately missed the mark with respect to a most important consideration--the reader.
The fact that this is a first edition is more than obvious not only in that the presentation is questionable but that the writing style ranges from sub-standard to okay--attributes which make for an odd juxtaposition when compared with the author's credentials and experience. The writing does not deliver on the promise of clear, engaging prose as stated on the back cover. So much so that one must pause to wonder whether or not this book had been proof-read before going to final print. Nonetheless, the topical information is indeed given. The caveat is that the reader will have to practice patience and decipher the, at times, convoluted writing so as to get to central ideas.
In terms of its presentation, there is no clear indication as to the division between fundamentals and applications in the text. Accessibility for the reader could have been increased by a more sectioned approach to the chapters and their subsections that delineated such divisions. Another problem is that a significant number of the chapters seem to err on the short side in terms of length. That may not seem like a significant problem, but when you take into consideration the many cross-references given in the text to other works on points that are only briefly introduced within the discourse it is easy to see where comprehensiveness can be lost.
For the student there are some chapter summaries and questions. These are only given for chapters 2 through 10. The reader is not given any indication as to why the rest of the chapters do not deserve the same treatment. As given, the summaries represent more of a glossary to be placed in an appendix rather than clear summarizations for their respective chapters--they have no apparent order either. Answers for the chapter questions are not available. There is no information in the text pertaining to the availability of question answers for course instructors or students alike. By such unavailability the text does not lend itself well to adoption as a course text by educational institutions.
As stated in the book, university courses in ultrasonics are usually only available to upper level graduate students. Currently there are few university physics departments that give these courses. One of the author's purposes in writing this book is to fill this void and make available a book for beginning graduate students or newcomer's to this field. Though while covering many topics this book does little to improve the accessibility of the subject. Most of the basic chapters near the beginning of the text can be found in any text on acoustics, vibrations, or waves. Nothing special about them. Whereas, some of the more particular later chapters on the subject at hand appear to be more of a compilation of research results than of thoughtful discourse. This may partially explain the lack of chapter questions for the later chapters. The overall sense is that this is more of a patch work
than a smoothly connected edition. Hopefully this work will go through a thorough revision before it ever makes it into a second edition. It is not enough to just fill a volume with details. Those details must be thoughtfully drawn together to conveying rhythm and flow to the subject. In the end, this text serves better as a reference than as a course text.

Explore the relationship between quantum mechanics and information-age applications
This volume takes an altogether unique approach to quantum mechanics. Providing an in-depth exposition of quantum mechanics fundamentals, it shows how these concepts are applied to most of today's information technologies, whether they are electronic devices or materials. No other text makes this critical, essential leap from theory to real-world applications.
The book's lively discussion of the mathematics involved fits right in with contemporary multidisciplinary trends in education: Once the basic formulation has been derived in a given chapter, the connection to important technological problems is summarily described. The many helpful features include
* Twenty-eight application-oriented sections that focus on lasers, transistors, magnetic memories, superconductors, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and other important technology-driving materials and devices
* One hundred solved examples, with an emphasis on numerical results and the connection between the physics and its applications
* End-of-chapter problems that ground the student in both fundamental and applied concepts
* Numerous figures and tables to clarify the various topics and provide a global view of the problems under discussion
* Over two hundred illustrations to highlight problems and text
A book for the information age, Quantum Mechanics: Fundamentals and Applications to Technology promises to become a standard in departments of electrical engineering, applied physics, and materials science, as well as physics. It is an excellent text for senior undergraduate and graduate students, and a helpful reference for practicing scientists, engineers, and chemists in the semiconductor and electronic industries.

Great for EE or MSE students.......2006-02-06
This book is easy to read. It is written by a professor in the EE Department at the University of Michigan. There are some technical applications of Quantum Mechanics. I strongly recommend to engineering students who want to really understand solid state physics and quantum optics. This book is a good introduction.
Singh's Quantum Mechanics.......1997-11-18
This volume has indeed taken a very unique approach to quantum mechanics, and I liked it very much. However, a few things may need to be improved: 1) I have noted that a significant portion of this volume is clearly taken directly from the excellent Q.M. book of Schiff. It would be nice if the author could give a little bit more of his own explanations and insights to make the volume even more original and useful. 2) I felt that too little emphasis was given to the matrix approach to Q.M., making some materials difficult to follow when the matrix formulation is invoked. 3) The application sections really linked well Q.M. to real-life problems. Being a devices physicist myself, the topics of these application examples suited my taste well. However, some example details were simply too brief, turning them into a source of confusion rather than clarification (e.g. "Excitons in Semiconductors." More words should be said about the "Central cell nature..."). - S.C. Ph.D.

Customer Reviews:
a nice book on high power lasers.......2001-04-27
The authors give almost every details on developing high power lasers. Compared with several other books where the high power lasers are discussed, this book provides far more than the basic physics and device design. I am surprised that the authors cover such a wide range of issues related. In particular, some very important issues which the industry care about very much, such as facet coating, heat dissipation, cooling and package, are explained and described. Since the authors are writing on the basis of their own experience, this book is sure to be a good reference book for either industry people or the people from universities.
a very nice book for high power lasers.......2001-04-26
The authors in this book give almost every details on developing high power semiconductor lasers. If you are dveloping the high power laser for either industrial products or research, this book is a good reference.
I am surprised that such various details are coverd in this book. Compared with some other books where the design and physics for high power laser are addressed, this book appears to provide more details for readers. The authors are writing their own experience, which I believe it very valuable. The important parameters which the industry people care about, are explained and described, such as facet coating, heat dissipation and device package, which I thought the authors may write more about.
Since the materials in this book provide far beyond physics and device design, it is sure to be welcomed from both the industry and the universities where the intense research is under the way.

Customer Reviews:
Average book with nice demos.......2005-08-25
The book can't be pointed as bad or good, the title tells everything, like the author says in the Introduction this book isnt the last one you should read for this field, its just a starting point, anyway I found it simple and you need to know some math and physics to get it all clear, besides that you have 6 nice demos with full code you can study and run for better understanding. Who wants to get a simple and clear basic concepts should get the book, others may prefer most complete titles.
VERY bad.......2005-07-09
I bought this book hoping it would explain some of the math related to games, like vectors, quaternions, matrixes etc. and operations with them, the reason I chose this book was that I wanted one which didn't present advanced math in the first chapters.
The book fails at explaining anything at all and it doesn't just start at a WAY to basic level (I wouldn't have been surprised if the author explained multiplication).
In the chapter about trigenometry the author tries to apply what you have learned with an example of an flying arrow, (s)he doesn't even tell why it is like that just that if the arrow is shooten 50 units some way the shadow will be 25 units away from the shooter.
At first I thought it may be better later, but when the author says the following:
"Anything from a char, which can hold values from -128 and 127, to an unsigned long, which can hold values between 0 and 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 (or 2 to the power of 64)"
Here are two problems, first it is up to the compiler to choose whether char is signed or unsigned, this means it can also go from: 0-255, but the biggest mistake is to say that a long is 64 bit! How many bits a long is isn't defined in the standard and on most current compilers(MSVC++ 2003 .NET included) sizeof(long) is 32 bit.
I can't comment on the physics, matrixes etc. since I put down this book when I came to the chapter about vectors since it was just SO bad, this is why it didn't get 1 star.
For people want an alternative I recommend 3D Math Primer for Graphics and Game Development.
some human errors, but priceless theory review!.......2005-01-04
I had read some of the reviews for this book and they focus on parts where almost all books have human errors, code or math examples, but the explaination of the theory is very well reviewed. This book is very well organized and explains very well the topics. This book is a very good book for begginers on games physics and math, its not a book for learning math, physics or programming, and by reading the reviews of the book you'll see what I meant, seems a lot of people misundestood the book title.
Don't buy this book........2004-10-15
I was looking for a book with Math and Physics formulas and explenation how to use them in game programming. I saw this book and took a glance in it in the book store and it looked verry nice.
But it have been a big disappointment. The first two thirds of it is either verry simple (points and lines) or "strange" stuff like 3D rotation. If you are intrested in 3D game programming you proberbly don't buy a book for beginners. Also the structure of the book is verry wothless, it takes time to find what you are looking for.
I wold not recomend this if you are choosing between this book and another. I'll give it 2 two stars, and thats a high grade for it.
Good and Bad.......2004-08-22
First on the good points. This book is great for beginner games programmers who lacked the mathematical and physics knowledge. The lessons were simple and easy to understand.
The bad points? Glaring errors everywhere. For example, the question would ask you what A + B in the diagram is when the diagram only shows F + G. Another one, the diagram shows [7,2] and the questions ask you things concerning [7,3]. This was supposedly meant to be for beginners, but with glaring errors such as this all over, it makes it an obstacle such to get down to learning the basics.
It would have been a great book for beginners like me if I hadn't later figure out that those simple problems I was trying to solve were actually printing errors.
