Book Description
The Illustrated Wavelet Transform Handbook: Introductory Theory and Applications in Science, Engineering, Medicine and Finance provides an overview of the theory and practical applications of wavelet transform methods. The author uses several hundred illustrations, some in color, to convey mathematical concepts and the results of applications. The first chapter presents a brief overview of the wavelet transform, including a short history. The remainder of the book is split into two parts: the first part discusses the mathematics of both discrete and continuous wavelet transforms while the second part deals with applications in a variety of subject areas, such as geophysics, medicine, fluid turbulence, engineering testing, speech and sound analysis, image analysis, and data compression. These application chapters make the reader aware of the similarities that exist in the use of wavelet transform analysis across disciplines. A comprehensive list of more than 700 references provides a valuable resource for further study. The book is designed specifically for the applied reader in science, engineering, medicine, finance, or any other of the growing number of application areas. Newcomers to the subject will find an accessible and clear account of the theory of continuous and discrete wavelet transforms, providing a large number of examples of their use across a wide range of disciplines. Readers already acquainted with wavelets can use the book to broaden their perspective.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent and informative book.......2003-09-26
This book provides a comprehensive overview of wavelet transform methodologies and applications. The emphasis is on practical applications which are illustrated with many detailed figures and examples from Science and Engineering. A particular interesting chapter on medical applications is provided. In the introductory chapters, Addison gives a clear account of the theory for both continuous and discrete wavelet transform and associated post-processing techniques. Unlike many of the other books in this area, Addison communicates the concepts with a level of detail, sufficient for the applied engineer and scientist, but without becoming bogged down in a fog of mathematical gymnastics (a feature of many of the books in this area). A welcome addition to the growing number of books on this important signal analysis technique.

Bad Math.......2006-03-30
1.32 - 16.84 (1.32 minus 16.84) is a negative number (-15.52)! Not +15.52! (See page 47). When you subtract a larger number from a smaller number, the result is ALWAYS negative number. This book makes this same mistake over and over! See pages 29,30,31,32, 34, and I'll bet there is more! Nurses watch out! Do not use bad math! How did the publisher release this book with out reviewing the math?
Perfect reading!.......2005-09-28
Every page of this book was in perfect condition.
Very, very pleased with the book! It was practically new!
Nice book, but with mistakes.......2003-06-14
As a new nursing student I have found this book very useful. There is a very comprehensive introduction which allows the student to relearn some of the math skills that may have been lost over the year. I also really like the fact that the book comes with a removable laminated card with conversions on it. I'm sure that this will come in quite handy when I begin my clinicals.
My only real complaint is that I have found a couple of mistakes in the fifth edition. I found at least two mistake in the answers provided for the chapter review on apothecaries' measurements. I would recommend that the publisher check their material a little better so as to prevent confusion for students.
Thumbs Up For Maths for Nurses.......2003-05-02
A great little book which is user friendly and concise.I would recommend it for any nurse wanting to learn more about drug calculations ! It gets the thumbs up rating !!
Math For Nurses : Thumbs Up !.......2003-04-27

Customer Reviews:
A very comprehensive reference.......2007-07-24
This book is basically a collection of monographs, each on a different integral transform (and most by different authors). There are additional sections which are general references, but they are probably redundant to most people who would actually be using this book.
The book is a bit weighted towards Fourier transforms, but I found the Laplace and Hankel transform sections very good also. I also learned a lot about other transforms I didn't know much about (e.g., Mellin and Radon transforms).
This book may be the best reference out there for non-mathematicians regarding integral transforms, especially regarding the lesser-known transforms. There are plenty of other books on Laplace and Fourier transforms, but not so on most of the others.
I liked the worked examples for almost each important property of each transform. For me, that I how I learn these things.
A best seller in mathematics !.......2000-04-15

The World of Mathematics: A Four-Volume Set
ASIN: 1584885025 |
Book Description
The Handbook of Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists covers the main fields of mathematics and focuses on the methods used for obtaining solutions of various classes of mathematical equations that underlie the mathematical modeling of numerous phenomena and processes in science and technology. To accommodate different mathematical backgrounds, the preeminent authors outline the material in a simplified, schematic manner, avoiding special terminology wherever possible. Organized in ascending order of complexity, the material is divided into two parts. The first part is a coherent survey of the most important definitions, formulas, equations, methods, and theorems. It covers arithmetic, elementary and analytic geometry, algebra, differential and integral calculus, special functions, calculus of variations, and probability theory. Numerous specific examples clarify the methods for solving problems and equations. The second part provides many in-depth mathematical tables, including those of exact solutions of various types of equations. This concise, comprehensive compendium of mathematical definitions, formulas, and theorems provides the foundation for exploring scientific and technological phenomena.
Customer Reviews:
Superb Handbook of Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists. Useful!.......2007-09-15
This volume replaces an old one which did not make it to our current residence. Much more up to date, informative, with reference tables, etc., which, I find very useful; especially in my study of Calculus! It is the most treasured volume in my library!
Really very Good..........2007-03-13
This book is very comprehensive and useful. If you like math this book must to be yours library..i recommend this reference book
The one I need.......2007-01-17
Though not concise in length (with its 1500+ pages), this reference book provides all major sections of modern mathematics, from arithmetic and elementary functions to integral equations and math statistics, in a very clear and concise way. Definitions and theorems, formulas and methods, graphs and tables, equations and solutions--all I may ever need as a researcher--are brought together in a single book.
Compared to the famous math handbooks by Korn & Korn and Bronshtein & Semendyayev, it gives a much broader and more detailed description of solution methods, classical and new, for ODEs and PDEs, and also integral, difference and functional equations.
And the extended and well-organized tables in the second part of the book impressed me even more. They include those of finite sums, series, indefinite and definite integrals, direct and inverse integral transforms (Laplace, Fourier and Mellin), and exact solutions to ordinary differential, partial differential, integral and functional equations and more.
The 58-page long index makes the book even handier and easier to use.
I am happy to have a copy of this handbook on my desk.
convenient for practising professionals.......2007-01-08
This hefty book can be a very useful reference to practising professionals in engineering and science. It brings together numerous formulae and principles scattered throughout many textbooks. While it might sound strange to call a book of this length concise, in actuality, each section on a given subject is indeed so. Compared to you having to delve through entire texts on that subject.
The treatment of numerical methods is also good. In recognition of many of us having ready access to computational power these days.
The price is slightly high. But a book like this, you don't need to get every new edition. By its nature, it should be infrequently updated.
Book Description
Following in the footsteps of the authors' bestselling Handbook of Integral Equations and Handbook of Exact Solutions for Ordinary Differential Equations, this handbook presents brief formulations and exact solutions for more than 2,200 equations and problems in science and engineering. · Parabolic, hyperbolic, and elliptic equations with constant and variable coefficients · New exact solutions to linear equations and boundary value problems · Equations and problems of general form that depend on arbitrary functions · Formulas for constructing solutions to nonhomogeneous boundary value problems · Second- and higher-order equations and boundary value problems An introductory section outlines the basic definitions, equations, problems, and methods of mathematical physics. It also provides useful formulas for expressing solutions to boundary value problems of general form in terms of the Green's function. Two supplements at the end of the book furnish more tools and information: Supplement A lists the properties of common special functions, including the gamma, Bessel, degenerate hypergeometric, and Mathieu functions, and Supplement B describes the methods of generalized and functional separation of variables for nonlinear partial differential equations.

Finally, a book that answers the REAL questions..............2000-04-14
I found the book to be an inclusive reference for the many scattered bits of data, information and guidance that are needed when one takes on the construction of a large project, such as a golf course. The multitude of decisions that you run into normally cause many delays, while the answers are sought and decisions are pondered. This book gives a quick reference that can be handy to both the site superintendent or construction foreman. A must for any golf course superintendent and everyone involved in golf course construction.
Fantastic, an all you need to know guideline to construction.......1999-10-07

Customer Reviews:
Interesting book.......2007-01-09
It is an interesting book because it collects a set of concepts and definitions very useful when you are working on this field. It allows you to review procedures when you are writing a technical report or a scientific article. Very nice tool!
covers discrete maths, like Boolean algebra and graphs.......2006-02-19
This reference book is not as comprehensive as classics like Abramowitz and Stegun. The tables of indefinite integrals is very sparse. While the various numerical tables are also not that encompassing.
But the book has a nice wide span of topics. Notably, it starts with a chapter on discrete maths, including Boolean algebra and graph theory. So there is a succinct mention of how to minimise Boolean polynomials, for example. Very useful in circuit design or programming.
Other, older maths references that were oriented to science and engineering typically ignored discrete maths. Perhaps the inclusion here reflects the increasing importance of computational usages in many disciplines?
Excellent Engineering Math Reference.......2001-02-09
This book has everything (geometry, trig, linear algebra, diff eq, calculus, ...) in a cleanly laid out format. Many figures are provided to clarify definitions. The presentation is clear and concise - usually I do not need to consult another reference for additional details. Out of my math/mechanical engineering book collection, this is probably my favorite book.
Strong Recommend Mathematical Handbook for Science and Eng........2000-04-21
