Related quotes from Bass, T., Intrusion Detection Systems & Multisensor Data Fusion, Communications of the ACM, pp. 99-105, Vol. 43, No. 4, April 2000:

Multisensor data fusion or distributed sensing, is a relatively new engineering discipline used to combine data from multiple and diverse sensors and sources in order to make inferences about events, activities, and situations. These systems are often compared to the human cognitive process where the brain fuses sensory information from the various sensory organs, evaluates situations, makes decisions, and directs action.

Data fusion technology has been applied most prominently to military applications such as battlefield surveillance and tactical situation assessment. Data fusion has also emerged in commercial applications such as robotics, manufacturing, medical diagnosis, and remote sensing.

The application of data fusion in technical systems requires mathematical and heuristic techniques from fields such as statistics, artificial intelligence, operations research, digital signal processing, pattern recognition, cognitive psychology, information theory and decision theory.

In a typical military command and control (C2) system, data fusion sensors are used to observe electromagnetic radiation, acoustic and thermal energy, nuclear particles, infrared radiation, noise and other signals. Multisensor data fusion provides an important functional framework for building next generation information fusion and cyberspace situational awareness systems.

There exist significant opportunities and numerous technical challenges for the commercial application of data fusion theory into the art and science of modern decision support systems. This handbook provides the absolute best possible overview of the art and science of multisensor data fusion technology.

Congratulations to David Hall and James Llinas for great editorial work on this handbook. I strongly recommend this book to anyone working in this wonderful and rapidly evolving field.

    Book Description

This book provides an introduction to decision making in a distributed computational framework. When most computations were performed by a central processor, classical detection theory could assume that the processor could make decisions based on complete information. The development of distributed processors working in parallel on different parts of the same computational problem makes it necessary to make local decisions that are then conveyed to other processors, where ultimately a fusion center must make global decisions. Using numerous examples throughout the book, the author discusses such distributed detection processes under various different formulations and in a wide variety of network topologies. By providing a unified treatment of the recent advances, this book should prove valuable not only to researchers active in the field, but also to graduate students and others embarking on research in detection, signal processing, and statistical decision theory. Some prior knowledge of detection theory is assumed.

5 out of 5 stars The State of the Art as it Exhists Today.......2005-10-18

It should come as no surprise that viewing things with different sensors produce images that are different. Looking at two or more images side by side may well not provide enough information to the brain for a combined or fused image to appear. This book is on computer processing of multiple images to present a combined image that provides a human with an enhanced picture containing more useful information than the two separate images.

Blum and Liu are editors of the book. They are contributors to some of the chapters, the other chapters are written by an international group of experts in various fields. Contributors come from Canada, France, England, Czech Republic, Australia, The Netherlands, and all around the US.

The book is a combined technical work on producing fused images along with application notes on the use of fused images in various applications such as medical imagery, surveillance and navigation, various industrial applications and more. There are twenty eight pages of color images most of which contain multiple images.

This book represents the state of the art in image fusion as it exists today.

        Book Description

Non-destructive testing (NDT) systems can generate incomplete, incorrect or conflicting information about a flaw or a defect. Therefore, the use of more than one NDT system is usually required for accurate defect detection and/or quantification. In addition to a reduction in inspection time, important cost savings could be achieved if a data fusion process is developed to combine signals from multisensor systems for manual and remotely operated inspections. This gathering of data from multiple sources and an efficient processing of information help in decision making, reduce signal uncertainty and increase the overall performance of a non-destructive examination. This book gathers, for the first time, essays from leading NDT experts involved in data fusion. It explores the concept of data fusion by providing a comprehensive review and analysis of the applications of NDT data fusion. This publication concentrates on NDT data fusion for industrial applications and highlights progress and applications in the field of data fusion in areas ranging from materials testing in the aerospace industry to medical applications. Each chapter contains a specific case study with a theoretical part but also presents experimental results from a practical point of view. The book should be considered more as a pragmatic introduction to the applications of NDT data fusion rather than a rigorous basis for theoretical studies.

              Book Description

This comprehensive resource provides you with an in-depth understanding of finite-set statistics (FISST) - a recently developed method which unifies much of information fusion under a single probabilistic, in fact Bayesian, paradigm. The book helps you master FISST concepts, techniques, and algorithms, so you can use FISST to address real-world challenges in the field. You learn how to model, fuse, and process highly disparate information sources, and detect and track non-cooperative individual/platform groups and conventional non-cooperative targets.

You find a rigorous Bayesian unification for many aspects of expert systems theory. Moreover, the book presents systematic integral and differential calculus for multisource-multitarget problems, providing a methodology for devising rigorous new techniques. Book Description

Sensors arrays are used in diverse applications across a broad range of disciplines. Regardless of the application, however, the tools of sensor array signal processing remain the same. Furthermore, whether your interest is in acoustic, seismic, mechanical, or electromagnetic wavefields, they all have a common mathematical framework. Mastering this framework and those tools lays a strong foundation for more specialized study and research. Sensor Array Signal Processing helps build that foundation. It unravels the underlying principles of the subject without reference to any particular application. Instead, the author focuses on the common threads that exist in wavefield analysis. After introducing the basic equations governing different wavefields, the treatment includes topics from simple beamformation, spatial filtering, and high resolution DOA estimation to imaging and reflector mapping. It studies different types of sensor configurations, but focuses on the uniform linear and circular arrays-the most useful configurations for understanding array systems in practice. Unique in its approach, depth, and quantitative focus, Sensor Array Signal Processing offers the ideal starting point and an outstanding reference for those working or interested in medical imaging, astronomy, radar, communications, sonar, seismology-any field that studies propagating wavefields. Its clear exposition, numerical examples, exercises, and wide applicability impart a broad picture of array signal processing unmatched by any other text on the market.

              Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Excessively succint and poorly typeset.......2006-07-17

I was cautious after reading the other reviewer's comments regarding this book's typography, but I decided to check it out since my school's library carried a copy. My graduate studies concern acoustic phased arrays, so this could've been one of my best references.

I agree that the book's presentation is often unclear. Several diagrams depicting wavefronts and angles are incomprehensible -- I could deduce their associated equations, but only because I already knew the subject matter. The typesetting bothered me as well, but in principle I could live with it.

IMHO book tries to convey too much in too little space. It reads like succint class notes intended to refresh one's memory, and not as a standalone reference to a previously unknown subject. It would be useful to Prof. Naidu's students, but it's of questionable value to other readers.

I wish this review could've been more positive. With better editing, more detailed deductions and carefully drawn diagrams this could be one of the strongest references in the field of phased arrays. Regrettably, I can't recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars A necessary book that covers the subject well, but..........2002-02-14

This book is intended as a textbook for graduate students who are assumed to have taken some basic signal processing courses, or as a practicing researcher's reference. The topic is well presented, in that the different processing schemes are derived clearly and consicely. Indeed, it is a formidable achievement for an author to cover so many processing schemes so clearly and with such detail within some 450 pages. On the parts of the contents, this book is a potential standard desktop reference for the researcher or engineer working in the field of signal processing.

Unfortunately, the book itself does not quite meet the standards of its contents. The layout and typography leaves, I think, much to be desired. By necessity, such a text is heavily boggled with math, but the word processor used to typeset the text has not been able to generate a very pleasant typeface, resulting in a generally messy appearance of the text. The contents of some chapters of this book is precicely on the point of my work. However, I chose to use another book, that was slightly off topic, but which was a more pleasant read due to typography.

This book is, by contents, a potential standard reference for the signal processing practitioner and as such clearly worth the five star score. However, the reader who appreciates the visual appearance of a text, may want to pick up a copy in the local bookstore and judge for himself if the contents makes up for the messy typeface.
