Book Description
Instability of flows and their transition to turbulence are widespread phenomena in engineering and the natural environment. They are important in applied mathematics, astrophysics, biology, geophysics, meteorology, oceanography, physics, and engineering. This is a graduate-level textbook to introduce these phenomena by modeling them mathematically, and describing numerical simulations and laboratory experiments. The visualization of instabilities is emphasized with many figures. Many worked examples and exercises for students illustrate the ideas of the text. Readers are assumed to be fluent in linear algebra, advanced calculus, elementary theory of ordinary differntial equations, complex variable and the elements of fluid mechanics. The book is aimed at graduate students, but is very useful for specialists in other fields.

Good topics, but see his other books.......2003-09-30
Drazin was an excellent writer (see Hydrodynamic Stability and Nonlinear Systems), but this book felt very disorganized to me, possibly because he passed away shortly before it's release.
The concept is very good: how do we get from instability to full-fleged turbulence, and are we even ready to answer the question? He gives a good explanation of the stability of ODEs, and follows this with a discussion of the standard linear hydrodynamic stability problems (Kelvin-Helmholtz, Rayleigh-Bénard, etc.). It ends with a discussion of the transition to turbulence.
But the problem is that he has already treated most of these topics in his other books, and the earlier treatments were nearly identical in many respects, or they were just plain better. Even regarding the new material on transition to turbulence, I feel that it did not serve to unify the earlier topics as it should have.
Some further editing may have greatly improved this book and better underscored the overlying theme, but as it stands I feel that one is better off spending their time on his other books.

Excellent Introductory CFD Text.......2007-02-12
This book is a wonderful way to understand the fundamental concepts behind techniques such as the SIMPLE algorithm. Patankar begins in one dimension, expands his approach, and presents the results very clearly. His physical insights are very well presented, and his narrative style is easy to read. One may much more profitably read the recent literature in this area after having examined Patankar's text.
best fundamental CFD book, must have.......2006-03-05
This is the best CFD book I ever read !! And it should be your first CFD book too. It's easy, short, concise and correct.
It doesn't have extensive coverage or any advanced topic like most of recent CFD book get. But the way it shines is that the author (one of the founders of recent CFD field) spent that much time discussing how to discritizing and evaluating the simplest form of commonly used pde eqations and boundary conditions. No advanced math involved, it's all simple algebra.
Everytime when I start a new problem and write down the discritized eqation, I double checked it using what I learned from the book before I input it into the computer. It just worked.
There's no magic in CFD, but this book is like a magic to me.
If you want to code heat/mass transfer/fluid flow, buy this.......2002-12-17
This is extraordinarily well-written for anyone who knows a little bit about heat transfer, mass transfer, or fluid flow and wants to write a mathematical model to perform calculations in 1D, 2D or 3D. (Also works for electromagnetic equations of the same form--used it for my doctoral thesis.) It's very practically oriented, with clear explanations and good diagrams showing how the grid layout translates into code.
A fundamental book on CFD.......2000-04-26
This is one of the ground breaking texts. I purchased a copy on the recommendation of a collegue (who has worked in the field for a while) when I started in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
I found the book a little bit difficult to get into. Having spent more time working through CFD problems, it all now makes sense - although I would recommend beginners to find something else more recent (such as An introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics: The finite volume method by Versteeg & Malalasekera) that has some of the more recent developments in the field.
It is still an invaluable reference to have on your bookshelf as it covers the fundamentals of CFD.
excellent.......2000-03-11
A very good book to start learnig about CFD and an excellent book to everyone that works with CFD.

Book Description
This is the second volume of a set of two devoted to the operator approach to linear problems in hydrodynamics (Volume 1: 3-7643-5406-2). It presents functional analytical methods applied to the study of small movements and normal oscillations of hydromechanical systems having cavities filled with either ideal or viscous fluids. The work relies on the authors' and their students' works of the last 30-40 years. The readers are not supposed to be familiar with the methods of functional analysis. The second part of the present volume collects nonself-adjoint problems on small motions and normal oscillations of a viscous fluid filling a bounded region. The book is particularly useful for researchers, engineers and students in fluid mechanics and mathematics interested in operator theoretical methods for the analysis of hydrodynamical problems.

Book Description
Differential equations are often used in mathematical models for technological processes or devices. However, the design of a differential mathematical model is crucial and difficult in engineering.
As a hands-on approach to learn how to pose a differential mathematical model the authors have selected 9 examples with important practical application and treat them as following:
- Problem-setting and physical model formulation
- Designing the differential mathematical model
- Integration of the differential equations
- Visualization of results
Each step of the development of a differential model is enriched by respective Mathcad 11 commands, todays necessary linkage of engineering significance and high computing complexity.
To support readers of the book with respect to changes that might occur in future versions of Mathcad (Mathcad 12 for example), updates of examples, codes etc. can be downloaded from the following web page www.thermal.ru. Readers can work with Mathcad-sheets of the book without any Mathcad by help Mathcad Application Server Technology.

Stunning.......2006-03-20
I bought the book for my research in planing crafts. In a single volume it covered everything I wanted to know about the planing crafts. The book is particularly useful in conceptual design phase because the author does not rely on expensive CFDs to do the modeling. I'm working on the dynamic planing behaviour of seaplanes and the linear state space model given in the book proved to be an excellent starting point. I'm very grateful to the author because I have been having a hard time collecting scattered literatures on the subject which lacked a coherent exposition.

Book Description
This book provides an interdisciplinary presentation of the current knowledge of pattern formation in complex system, with sufficiently many details, tools, and concrete examples to be useful for the graduate student or scientist entering this area of research.
Book Description
Numerical Methods in Astrophysics: An Introduction outlines various fundamental numerical methods that can solve gravitational dynamics, hydrodynamics, and radiation transport equations. This resource indicates which methods are most suitable for particular problems, demonstrates what the accuracy requirements are in numerical simulations, and suggests ways to test for and reduce the inevitable negative effects. After an introduction to the basic equations and derivations, the book focuses on practical applications of the numerical methods. It explores hydrodynamic problems in one dimension, N-body particle dynamics, smoothed particle hydrodynamics, and stellar structure and evolution. The authors also examine advanced techniques in grid-based hydrodynamics, evaluate the methods for calculating the gravitational forces in an astrophysical system, and discuss specific problems in grid-based methods for radiation transfer. The book incorporates brief user instructions and a CD-ROM of the numerical codes, allowing readers to experiment with the codes to suit their own needs. With numerous examples and sample problems that cover a wide range of current research topics, this highly practical guide illustrates how to solve key astrophysics problems, providing a clear introduction for graduate and undergraduate students as well as researchers and professionals.
Customer Reviews:
Extremely good introduction!.......2007-09-22
This is an extremely well written introduction to a rapidly developing field. The authors cover a broad swath of topics, providing a clear understanding of the physical principles underlying numerical astrophysics. Such a focus on basic principles and physical understanding ensures that one does not lose sight of the forest for the trees. I recommend this book highly for graduate students in astrophysics, as well as active researchers in the field who want a quick overview before going into the details.
HUGE disappointment.......2007-04-08
I was really looking forward to this title, hoping in a book that would go beyond the usual toy problems of typical standard numerical simulations books. Also knowing that this book included real working code I was also hoping it would bridge the huge gap between theory and practice with a practical approach. Boy, was I mistaken. hard to believe, but there is not a single line of code in this book! The numerical codes in Fortran (yuk) are just dumped in the CD and superficially described (just barely saying what it does and what the input and output are) in a final 10 pages ( yes, you read that well, 10 pages) "chapter" that looks more like an appendix to anyone with a little common sense. I know college professors can be a bit disoriented about what is important and what not in their field of research (I still my quantum mechanics prof. employed approximately the same time to try to explain us while there are 2n+1 numbers between n and -n and to introduce us to Fourier Transforms) but this is really too much! The bunch of theory and equations that this book is littered is totally useless unless you show me how these equations get implemented in code.
And if I have to wade through the code in a CD trying to figure it out by myself, what is the value of buying this book? Given this approach , I really pity the grad students of these guys...
Customer Reviews:
Good.......2005-02-06
I used this book for a graduate course in marine hydrodynamics.
I found it clear and easy to understand, more so than other books on the subject (White or Fay or Batchelor)
Very good.......2005-01-20
Extremely well-written, readable. Here, you can learn about airfoil (hydrofoil) theory in detail, all the way through induction effects (drag and change of angle of inflow). I read it to understand outboard racing propellers. There's is no tractable theory of the latter because of asymmetry, and because racing propellers are surfacing propellers. So you learn what you can from airfoil theory and the rest is engineering via the seat of the pants, try something and then test it to see how it works. I did that for 9 years and set 3 APBA OPC speed records along with winning 6 National Championships, so the method worked pretty well in practice for me but left the most interesting questions about what propellers are doing unanswered.
Book Description
The Nobel Laureate's monumental study surveys hydrodynamic and hydromagnetic stability as a branch of experimental physics. Among the subjects treated: thermal instability of a layer of fluid heated from below, the Benard problem, stability of Couette flow, and the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability.

Book on Hydrodynamic.......2005-10-27
This is one of the classic books written by Chandrasekhar. This is
extremely helpful for the people working on Hydrodynamic and
Hydromagnetic Stability.
Most affordable of the classics on hydrodynamic stability.......2000-07-21
This is one of the standard monographs on hydrodynamic instabilities, considered a classic. It was published by Oxford UP in 1961 and is kept in print (at a bargain price) by Dover. It is still very usable, easy to read, and an excellent introduction, although on some points it is out of date. For Rayleigh-Benard convection, a reader would do well to consult more recent books like Drazin & Reid, Swinney & Gollub, Koschmieder, and Getling. However, nobody covers the linear theory better than Chandrasekhar.
A practical, beautiful masterpiece.......2000-02-07
I first read this book just to better understand a small point in a fluid dynamics paper I was reading, but quickly realized it is an encyclopaedic masterpiece, and found myself reading more and more. Chandasekhar's explanations are clear, easily readable, and complete, and should be a model for other writers. Anyone working on fluids should own this.

auntie.......2007-09-02
The magic bus series is very enjoyable. As swimming season started we learned about sinking and floating. I know he gets it when he tells me what we have to do to make things sink or swim in the pool.
Great Book!!!.......2007-01-22
This is a great book! My son loves all of the Magic School Bus books. The characters are fun and interesting. There is lots of good scientific information.
This book has more 'ups' than 'downs'.......2000-06-11
Since children love 'The Magic School Bus' television show, this book about sinking and floating will be sure to grab the attention of those inquisitive young minds! It serves as a great asset to a science classroom, or your own home library. Although it is kind of lengthy, I highly recommend it for insurance of complete understanding of the sinking and floating process. Happy reading!
