Five Stars With no Doubt........2007-03-15
During my years as Structural Calculyst this book was always on my right side on my desk, and when I needed it, it was ready to help me find my way. One really very good Engineer has never found all formulas in his head, instead he should be able of finding them out on good references and really know how to use
them all. This is the best reference book you are going to find when formulas is your subject, just buy it!
The only book I know better than this one is written in German and few people are able to read in German, so!
very useful handbook.......2007-01-04
Very helpful book in engineering job, but unfortunately I've found some mistake (the reason for 4 stars).
In general you can find lot of formulas in this book. This book is also very well known and that's the reason for recommending it. You can just refer to Roark's formulas and everybody knows what's that.
Great Reference Tool.......2006-10-29
This Book contains every fromula that i would ever need during my Mechanical Engineering Course.
It is quite easy to use, and the print is clear the index is user friendly
Well Thought Out Upgrade from Previous Editions.......2006-04-18
I have three editions of this book: the classic 4th edition, the useless 5th edition and this, the 7th edition.
The 4th edition has simple format, is easy to use, but lacks methods for more sophisticated hand analyses and is sparse on explanations. The 5th is best used for a doorstop.
This edition is an excellent combination of the usefullness of the 4th edition with modern and more advanced methods.
The layout of each section has excellent explanatory material and provides the simple 4th edition type equations backed with more involved/advanced formulas which are very useful.
My hat is off to the authors. This is probably the best reference for those nasty stress and deflection hand calculations we all have to do from time to time.
Excellent resource.......2005-10-01
Roark's has been and remains an excellent resource for the structural engineer and designer regardless of the edition. This is a referance I use on a daily basis. Typically the first book I reach for.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Schaum's Outline of Quantum Mechanics.......2007-01-21
Basic information, and lots of problems (many worked out, others with answers). Makes for good practice and review.
Very useful, needs a rewrite ..........2006-11-19
This book is useful. There is a variety of problems from fairly easy to difficult, but in general, the problems are similar (and often the same) as problems in graduate texts such as Merzbacher, Cohen, etc.. My complaint with this book is not necessarily the typos (although they should be fixed given the popularity of this book). My complaint is that that the authors sometimes skip steps in the solutions that are so critical, that is is nearly impossible to understand them. A useful solution can leave out mathematical drudgery, and calculations, but it shouldn't leave out critical steps that have been covered earlier in the book, because a solutions manual like this is not usually used as a textbook, it is used as a reference.
For instance I may want to try a practice problem on the Variational Method, and the problem leaves out steps that may have been covered in earlier chapters. So I spend hours playing with the problem until I find the solution. This is not useful, and not what a problems and solutions book should do. I understand that not every step can be included, but I would rather see more complete solutions, which might sacrifice the unsolved problems and the blank pages at the end of the book.
This book seems to have been typewritten from the authors' handwritten notes, because many of the typos are consistent with penmanship. But one of the authors should go over all of the solutions, flesh out the missing steps, and correct the errors. Without doing this, the physics student can't rely on this book as a trusted source, since they never know if the error they encounter is a typo or their own mistake.
Regardless, this is a useful book, and I have learned a lot from it.
Best value for money.......2006-08-25
This book is a complete introductory course that presents the basic concepts of Quantum Mechanics.
As a newcomer to this subject, I was puzzled by the separate definitions of the similar notions of inner product (denoted
< , >), scalar product (denoted ( , )), scalar product (denoted
< | >) and Dirac bracket (also denoted
< | >). It would be most helpful if, in a future edition, the authors could define these four notions in one place, along with an explanation of the differences (if any) between them.
Apart from this minor annoyance, for which I deducted one star, this book succesfully tackles a most important and difficult subject. The writing and presentation are up to the usually high standards of Schaum's Outline series. There are plenty of exercises, both solved and unsolved. And it's excellent value for money. For the price, there's no serious competition.
A better mathematical treatment, based on linear vector spaces, may be found in "Principles of Quantum Mechanics" by Shankar.

Not great.......2006-01-28
I bought this book as I was taking undergraduate-level Quantum Mechanics. While it has a better review and analysis of bra and ket notation than, say, the Griffiths text, and has excellent applications (square well, energy levels, Landau Levels, etc.), it was practically useless until I finished the course. Additionally, as others have pointed out, the outline is riddled with errors. It is not as well-written as Murray Spiegel's Vector Analysis or Fourier Series books. If you're a graduate student or want a refresher course, I'd consider it. Otherwise, this is not the ideal choice.

Excellent Introductory CFD Text.......2007-02-12
This book is a wonderful way to understand the fundamental concepts behind techniques such as the SIMPLE algorithm. Patankar begins in one dimension, expands his approach, and presents the results very clearly. His physical insights are very well presented, and his narrative style is easy to read. One may much more profitably read the recent literature in this area after having examined Patankar's text.
best fundamental CFD book, must have.......2006-03-05
This is the best CFD book I ever read !! And it should be your first CFD book too. It's easy, short, concise and correct.
It doesn't have extensive coverage or any advanced topic like most of recent CFD book get. But the way it shines is that the author (one of the founders of recent CFD field) spent that much time discussing how to discritizing and evaluating the simplest form of commonly used pde eqations and boundary conditions. No advanced math involved, it's all simple algebra.
Everytime when I start a new problem and write down the discritized eqation, I double checked it using what I learned from the book before I input it into the computer. It just worked.
There's no magic in CFD, but this book is like a magic to me.
If you want to code heat/mass transfer/fluid flow, buy this.......2002-12-17
This is extraordinarily well-written for anyone who knows a little bit about heat transfer, mass transfer, or fluid flow and wants to write a mathematical model to perform calculations in 1D, 2D or 3D. (Also works for electromagnetic equations of the same form--used it for my doctoral thesis.) It's very practically oriented, with clear explanations and good diagrams showing how the grid layout translates into code.
A fundamental book on CFD.......2000-04-26
This is one of the ground breaking texts. I purchased a copy on the recommendation of a collegue (who has worked in the field for a while) when I started in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
I found the book a little bit difficult to get into. Having spent more time working through CFD problems, it all now makes sense - although I would recommend beginners to find something else more recent (such as An introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics: The finite volume method by Versteeg & Malalasekera) that has some of the more recent developments in the field.
It is still an invaluable reference to have on your bookshelf as it covers the fundamentals of CFD.
excellent.......2000-03-11
A very good book to start learnig about CFD and an excellent book to everyone that works with CFD.

In this book, after a brief review of the more popular turbulence models, we present and discuss accurate and efficient numerical methods for solving the boundary-layer equations with turbulence models based on algebraic formulas (mixing length, eddy viscosity) or partial-differential transport equations. A computer program employing the Cebeci-Smith model and the k-e model for obtaining the solution of two-dimensional incompressible turbulent flows without separation is discussed in detail and is presented in the accompanying CD.
The numerical solution of the boundary-layer equations with flow separation is also discussed and an interactive boundary-layer method developed by the author is described in detail. A computer program for obtaining solutions on airfoils and wakes for a wide range of angles of attack, including stall, is discussed and presented in the accompanying CD. In many respects, this book can be seen as complimentary and supplementary to the author's
Analysis of Turbulent Flows.
Book Description
Since the publication of "Spectral Methods in Fluid Dynamics", spectral methods, particularly in their multidomain version, have become firmly established as a mainstream tool for scientific and engineering computation. While retaining the tight integration between the theoretical and practical aspects of spectral methods that was the hallmark of the earlier book, Canuto et al. now incorporate the many improvements in the algorithms and the theory of spectral methods that have been made since 1988. The initial treatment Fundamentals in Single Domains discusses the fundamentals of the approximation of solutions to ordinary and partial differential equations on single domains by expansions in smooth, global basis functions. The first half of the book provides the algorithmic details of orthogonal expansions, transform methods, spectral discretization of differential equations plus their boundary conditions, and solution of the discretized equations by direct and iterative methods. The second half furnishes a comprehensive discussion of the mathematical theory of spectral methods on single domains, including approximation theory, stability and convergence, and illustrative applications of the theory to model boundary-value problems. Both the algorithmic and theoretical discussions cover spectral methods on tensor-product domains, triangles and tetrahedra. All chapters are enhanced with material on the Galerkin with numerical integration version of spectral methods. The discussion of direct and iterative solution methods is greatly expanded as are the set of numerical examples that illustrate the key properties of the various types of spectral approximations and the solution algorithms.
A companion book "Evolution to Complex Geometries and Applications to Fluid Dynamics" contains an extensive survey of the essential algorithmic and theoretical aspects of spectral methods for complex geometries and provides detailed discussions of spectral algorithms for fluid dynamics in simple and complex geometries.
Book Description
This book is intended as a textbook for a first course in computational fluid dynamics and will be of interest to researchers and practitioners as well. It emphasizes fundamental concepts in developing, analyzing, and understanding numerical methods for the partial differential equations governing the physics of fluid flow. The linear convection and diffusion equations are used to illustrate concepts throughout. The chosen approach, in which the partial differential equations are reduced to ordinary differential equations, and finally to difference equations, gives the book its distinctiveness and provides a sound basis for a deep understanding of the fundamental concepts in computational fluid dynamics.

An easy presentation to not so easy concepts!.......2007-08-23
This book presents some fundamentals of CFD based on straightforward mathematical tools giving fast access to very interesting general behaviours of PDE families. Apart from the introduction of basic concepts, finite differences and finite volume discretizations, the heart of the book lies in chapters 4,6,7 where a clear and systematic methodology to go from PDE to ODE to O(delta)E is presented. The classical stabilities associated to the most famous time steppings are presented. Some other features such as multigrid, splitting, and upwind dissipations are presented in the same clear setting. The book is very well written, clear and straightforward. I hope more advanced topics will be also included in further editions!
Fundamentals of Computational Fluid Dynamics.......2001-07-09
Fundamentals of Computational Fluid Dynamics is one of several technically useful books on the subject. What sets it apart, however, is its ability to attract and maintain the reader's interest in what could otherwise be a dry topic.
The authors walk the student through a logical development of all aspects of the material. Helpful examples and end-of-chapter exercises solidify student learning in a practical manner. This book is an excellent resource, focusing on the fundamentals of the topic, and has my full recommendation.

Book Description
The subject of this book is the efficient solution of partial differential equations (PDEs) that arise when modelling incompressible fluid flow. The material is organized into four groups of two chapters each, covering the Poisson equation (chapters 1 & 2); the convection-diffucion equation
(chapters 3 & 4); the Stokes equations (chapters 5 & 6); and the Navier-Stokes equations (chapters 7 & 8). These equations represent important models within the domain of computational fluid dynamics, but they also arise in many other settings. For each PDE model, there is a chapter concerned with
finite element discretization. For each problem and associated solvers there is a description of how to compute along with theoretical analysis which guides the choice of approaches. Illustrative numerical results occur throughout the book, which have been computed with the freely downloadable
IFISS software. All numerical results should be reproducible by readers who have access to MATLAB and there is considerable scope for experimentation in the 'computational laboratory' provided by the software. This book provides an excellent introduction to finite elements, iterative linear solvers
and scientific computing aimed at graduates in engineering, numerical analysis, applied mathematics and interdisciplinary scientific computing. Including theoretical problems and practical exercises closely tied with freely downloadable MATLAB software, this book is an ideal teaching and learning
resource.

Customer Reviews:
good book.......2006-03-15
Neither an introduction nor a recipe book for level sets. Contains dense information and requires supplemental material.
Not a self contained book!.......2003-10-12
I bought this book with the intent of understanding the level set method AND be able to implement it in code. The book fails on the later. He gives you some basic formulas/algorithms to start with, but they are not good enough for most problems. You need to get the references (and the references of those references) to obtain the actual algorithms people use to implement the level set method.
The first six chapters are good for giving you a nice qualitative understanding of the method and the issues of implementing the method. And the rest of the book claims to show you the more advanced techniques, but whenever the nitty gritty details are needed, he refers you to the references.
My advice: just get his references. If you are at a university, then you probably have free access to the online journals that contain his (and others) research articles. In fact, this book is basically a copy-paste of those articles! Literally!
Not for beginners.......2003-04-23
I am afraid that this book is not for beginners who want to have a clear mind of the level set method. You will have to go to the library quite often to dig out all the references the author mentioned. I would say this book is for experienced researchers only.
Good introduction to level set methods.......2001-06-07
I use these methods in the context of image analysis, for image segmentation essentially. The book is an inescapable introduction by one of the main inventors of these methods. It is easy to read and relatively complete. Be sure to get the second edition. The only slight problems are the remaining typos. There are quite a few, for a second edition, and they might throw off a beginner. You will need to read some introduction text on finite differences methods at least. The chapter in Numerical Recipes is enough.
This is The Introduction to Level-Set Method.......2000-04-27
This is a very good introduction to the very exciting technique, level-set method. The method is basically for front-tracking or interface motion. But its application turned out to be so wide that it is now applied to problems which does not seem relevant to front-tracking, such as computaional grid generation. This book explaines the basics of this powerful tool very clearly, and it is in fact easy to read. Although it was written by a mathematician, it is not very mathematical like some texts on finite-element method written by mathematicians (which are often formidable to engineers). I recommend this book to anyone in engineering. You might find a new application of this technique.
