5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!.......2006-01-20

I ordered this book to use along with my text. It made the course much easier to understand. This book is the only reason I made a B in linear algebra. I just ordered the other books to use for abstract algebra and probability also. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Better and easier than sitting thru a confusing instructor.......2005-06-20

Want to ace linear algebra and not get confused all the time? This book can help solve even the trickiest problems in linear algebra and helps understand the more complex and complicated concepts of linear algebra. Buy this book and get ahead and never get left out in the cold again !

2 out of 5 stars Good for more practice but some irritating flaws.......2000-05-25

I've used many Schaum's books before, and most of them were very good because they were well written and explained concepts and techniques clearly. "Beginning Linear Algebra," however, was not as good as most of the other books in the series. It suffers from long chapter outlines, poor explanations, and many errors both in the explanations and answers to problems. Nevertheless, this book does provide a lot of good practice problems with answers. So I would recommend this book as a supplement to a regular text and not as a primary source of information about linear algebra.

    Book Description

Linear Vector Spaces and Cartesian Tensors is primarily concerned with the theory of finite dimensional Euclidian spaces. It makes a careful distinction between real and complex spaces, with an emphasis on real spaces, and focuses on those elements of the theory that are especially important in applications to continuum mechanics. The geometric content of the theory and the distinction between matrices and tensors are emphasized, and absolute- and component-notation are both employed. While the mathematics is rigorous, the style is casual. Chapter 1 deals with the basic notion of a linear vector space; many examples of such spaces are given, including infinite-dimensional ones. The idea of a linear transformation of a vector space into itself is introduced and explored in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 deals with linear transformations on finite dimensional real Euclidean spaces (i.e., Cartesian tensors), focusing on symmetric tensors, orthogonal tensors, and the interaction of both in the kinetically important polar decomposition theorem. Chapter 4 exploits the ideas introduced in the first three chapters in order to construct the theory of tensors of rank four, which are important in continuum mechanics. Finally, Chapter 5 concentrates on applications of the earlier material to the kinematics of continua, to the notion of isotropic materials, to the concept of scalar invariant functions of tensors, and to linear dynamical systems. Exercises and problems of varying degrees of difficulty are included at the end of each chapter. Two appendices further enhance the text: the first is a short list of mathematical results that students should already be familiar with, and the second contains worked out solutions to almost all of the problems. Offering many unusual examples and applications, Linear Vector Spaces and Cartesian Tensors serves as an excellent text for advanced undergraduate or first year graduate courses in engineering mathematics and mechanics. Its clear writing style also makes this work useful as a self-study guide.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for Sophmores in Physics.......2000-05-22

Although the book has a flavor towards continuum mechanics, the necessary concepts of linearity needed for the working physicist are presented in an elegant manner. The problems contribute a major understanding and expansion of the topics presented in the chapter. This book in conjuction with Finite-dimensional vector spaces by Halmos will present the reader the view from the top necessary to continue with topics such as Hilbert Spaces and Quantum Mechanics. I highly recommend this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-08-25

This book really nailed out the nuts and bolts of vector calculus. A must have for anybody taking an electricity and magnetism class in physics at the same time as multivariable calculus.

4 out of 5 stars easy to read.......2007-06-13

good reference book for people who want to study mechanical engineering

    5 out of 5 stars Positives/Negatives of Div,Grad,Curl.......2007-05-19

The book was easy to read and learn from. It draws parallels with electric field "stuff" which really adds to the understanding you gain from the math discussions, even if you are not already familiar with electric fields. The book provides concise discussions on the div, grad, and curl operators; however, it is not organized like a reference book or text book (e.g. it lacks tables of these operators expressed in cylindrical and spherical coordinates). I highly recommend reading through this book if you are at all confused about what div, grad, and curl are, the differences between them, or why you should be interested in them.

5 out of 5 stars Should be a required textbook for all freshman/sophomore physics and engineering students.......2007-02-17

Simply put, this book provides the best explanation of the gradient, the divergence, and the curl in any book I've seen. It really should be a required reference/text for every physics and engineering program in the country. All the mathematics is here, but the author also lucidly explains in words and diagrams the physical meaning of these three operations. Many students learn how to manipulate these operations, but they often have trouble understanding exactly what they mean. This book is easy to read (how many textbooks can you say that about?) and there are lots of problems to illustrate key points after each chapter. The author uses the mathematical formalism to solve some basic problems in electrostatics to provide real-world examples. After working through this book, you'll not only be able to calculate the curl of a vector function, you'll know exactly what it means.

5 out of 5 stars Great way to learn your basics!.......2007-01-03

I had three years of higher-level calculus between my BS and MS in mechanical engineering, and none of these classes have explained the concepts in this book with such clarity and accessibility. The sample problems at the end of each chapter cement the concepts just learned. For me, they were just challenging enough to test and hone my skills, but not so crazy that I felt like I was stroking some intellectual ego instead of learning practical concepts.

I highly recommend it to people of similar backgrounds as myself--people with already decent math backgrounds, but who need to hone their vector calculus skills to enter the world of physics, electrical engineering, fluid mechanics, continuum mechanics, or anything else along those lines (lines! Hah! Pun!). I feel like this book was written just for me! Are there really that many of us?

One tip on this book--get serious with it, and you will really cement your skills. Do the problems, for real--work them out with pencil and paper; don't just skim them while you watch TV. They are, as I've said, challenging enough to be rewarding, but none are the type that would send you sobbing to your prof in office hours. Suck it up, fix yourself a nice cup of tea, get your dog to sit with you, and go for it! It's well worth the effort.

    Book Description

Calculus in Vector Spaces addresses linear algebra from the basics to the spectral theorem and examines a range of topics in multivariable calculus. This second edition introduces, among other topics, the derivative as a linear transformation, presents linear algebra in a concrete context based on complementary ideas in calculus, and explains differential forms on Euclidean space, allowing for Green's theorem, Gauss's theorem, and Stokes's theorem to be understood in a natural setting. Mathematical analysts, algebraists, engineers, physicists, and students taking advanced calculus and linear algebra courses should find this book useful.

5 out of 5 stars Written by the masters! But really tough! .......2005-11-06

Very unfriendly but presented strictly! This book is purely for mathematics oriented students! If you can study through the book, you are one of the greatest!

2 out of 5 stars Unexcited, hazy presentation; at least accurate & coherent.......2001-06-08

Despite the myriad typos and mostly confused presentation, this book has at least couple of redeeming virtues, namely that a few sections, like the point-set topology section, were decent; in general the proofs were mostly rigorous and solid; and the exercises listed many good problems to help our understanding. Most important, the integreation of linear algebra with the calculus/analysis was, as advertised, pretty good. But the text was unexciting and very often completely unhelpful. It gets the job done of presenting the material, but not very well.

2 out of 5 stars Making a complicated subject almost inaccessible.......2001-01-10

This edition is riddled with typographical errors and general computational mistakes. Though some of this text's lack of clarity is due to the subject matter itself, it certainly isn't carefully-edited enough to make it more understandable. Very little is given by way of explanation, and solutions to the many problems in the text are given sparsely. The only positive thing I can say is that the problems in the text are generally appropriate for the material, but as an introduction to the subject, this text leaves you basically on your own.

    Book Description

This text is an axiomatic treatment of the properties of continuous multivariable functions and related results from topology. In the context of normed vector spaces, the author covers boundedness, extreme values, and uniform continuity of functions, along with the connections between continuity and topological concepts such as connectedness and compactness. The order of topics deliberately mimics the order of development in elementary calculus. This sequencing allows for an elementary approach, with analogies to and generalizations from such familiar ideas as the Pythagorean theorem. The reader is frequently reminded that the pictures suggested by geometry are powerful guides and tools. The definition-theorem-proof format resides within an informal exposition, containing numerous historical comments and questions within and between the proofs. The objective is to present precise proofs, but in a structure and tone that teach the student to plan and write proofs, both in general and specifically for the real analysis course that will follow this one. Applications are included where they provide interesting illustrations of the principles and theorems presented. Problems, solutions, bibliography and index complete this book. `Continuous Functions of Vector Variables' is suitable for a course in multivariable calculus aimed at advanced undergraduates preparing for graduate programs in pure mathematics. Required background includes a course in the theory of single-variable calculus and the elements of linear algebra. Also by the author: 'Derivatives and Integrals of Multivariable Functions,' ISBN 0-8176-4274-9.

4 out of 5 stars though concise but thorough.......2002-10-09

I think this is one of the best introduction book to analysis and to multivariable calculus at the same time. it is more intesive than ross elementary analysis but less intensive than spivak and rudins. one reading this book will not need a multivariable calculus background to study this advance topic. though it is reserve for students who lack a some what mathematical maturity, it is still an excellent book, because it makes the students understand the subject.from there a student can advance further. the only problem with this book is that the problems are a bit routine. Guzman should have put nonclassic problems i.e. challenging problems.

    Book Description

This book introduces the concepts of tensor algebras and differentiable manifolds to the intermediate-level student. It describes analytical and geometrical structures built on these basic concepts. Those structures -- which include differential forms and their integration, flows, Lie derivatives, distributions and their integrability conditions, connections, and pseudo-Riemannian and symplectic manifolds -- are then applied to the description of the fundamental ideas and Hamiltonian and Lagrangian mechanics, and special and general relativity. This book is designed to be accessible to the mathematics or physics student with a good standard undergraduate background, who is interested in obtaining a broader perspective of the rich interplay of mathematics and physics before deciding on a specialty.

Reviewer: Gonzalo Torroba from La Pampa, Argentina It's and excellent book where you can see all the power and ellegancy that tensors have in physics. In "Tensors and manifolds..." you study mathematics in a clear and understandable way, knowing it's purpose. Some little points: I think it does not have enough applications about vector calculus (Frenet formulas, scalar potentials, Maxwell equations...).I would have also preffered it to contain more about general tensor theory: pseudotensors, curvilineal coordinates, and also about Riemann spaces.

      Book Description

This book is a new edition of "Tensors and Manifolds: With Applications to Mechanics and Relativity" which was published in 1992. It is based on courses taken by advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in mathematics and physics, giving an introduction to the expanse of modern mathematics and its application in modern physics. It aims to fill the gap between the basic courses and the highly technical and specialised courses which both mathematics and physics students require in their advanced training, while simultaneously trying to promote, at an early stage, a better appreciation and understanding of each other's discipline. The book sets forth the basic principles of tensors and manifolds, describing how the mathematics underlies elegant geometrical models of classical mechanics, relativity and elementary particle physics. The existing material from the first edition has been reworked and extended in some sections to provide extra clarity, as well as additional problems. Four new chapters on Lie groups and fibre bundles have been included, leading to an exposition of gauge theory and the standard model of elementary particle physics. Mathematical rigour combined with an informal style makes this a very accessible book and will provide the reader with an enjoyable panorama of interesting mathematics and physics.
