5 out of 5 stars Packed with problems and solutions.......2007-05-24

This is an updated version of a previous Mathematics of Finance text from Schaums which I used heavily in a finance course. It is very useful to students of actuarial science and finance. For aspiring actuaries I also recommend "Mathematics of Interest Rates, Insurance, Social Security, and Pensions" by Robert Muksian and "Mathematics of Finance" by Cissell. All three of these books are better for self-study than "Theory of Interest" by Kellison.

5 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD BOOK ALSO FOR BUSINESS PEOPLE.......2007-02-03

I am a manager, and sometimes I listen to financial managers without being deeply involved in their technical language. After reading and practicing this book , I am able to use my skills more proactively working with them.

5 out of 5 stars Effective refresher ... Efficient reference.......2007-01-07

I recommend this text to financial professionals I teach ... VERY helpful to clear the cobwebs several years after college!

5 out of 5 stars A Good Reference and a Self-Study Guide.......2006-07-11

As with most of the books from the Schaum's Outline collection, this book comprises the fundamentals so it can be used as a supplement to standard textbooks in class, as a stand-alone study aid, or as a reference for the professional practitioner.

My academic background is in Electronics Engineering, so I really didn't take any courses on finances back in College. When my work forced me to gain knowledge in the area of Financial Math I turned to this book as a self study guide. The text is clear, has a lot of worked problems and examples, and it did its job: Gave me the knowledge I needed.

No wonder that this is actually the Very best-selling book of the whole Schaum's Outline collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Value.......2002-10-18

The target audience of this book is people who want to know how to estimate annuities, life insuarance premiums etc. If you are sitting the actuarial exam(SOA) 2 this is what you need for the Theory of Interest part. It also covers parts of exam 3. The book is affordable and way better than any other else. The methodology is crystal clear.

    Book Description

This text focuses on the relationships among the various types of values that are associated with individual life and annuity contracts.

For the experienced actuary or someone switching careers into the individual life business, this text provides a comprehensive summary of current actuarial practice in the design, pricing and daily maintenance of individual products.

For the student, it illustrates the dependencies that exist among premiums, cash values, reserves, dividends and other non-guaranteed elements when designing individual products. It also demonstrates how all aspects of actuarial practice are linked together in a product management cycle.

This book has been adopted as a reference for the new Fundamentals of Actuarial Practice Course offered by the Society of Actuaries.

It is a valuable supplemental reference for SOA Course 8-Individual Insurance.

    Book Description

From the reviews: "The highly esteemed 1990 first edition of this book now appears in a much expanded second edition. The difference between the first two English editions is entirely due to the addition of numerous exercises. The result is a truly excellent book, balancing ideally between theory and practice. ....As already hinted at above, this book provides the ideal bridge between the classical (deterministic) life insurance theory and the emerging dynamic models based on stochastic processes and the modern theory of finance. The structure of the bridge is very solid, though at the same time pleasant to walk along. I have no doubt that Gerber's book will become the standard text for many years to come. 5 out of 5 stars For the megacities of the world- Tall Building Checklist!.......2000-08-03

for investors, managers, and inspectors of tall buildings, this is an exceptionally useful book. Mr. Graighead combines his Australian roots and his California experience in a clear guide to fire safety and security management of these "vertical villages." I have quoted from this work in forums around the world, and have made this book a special present for colleagues in the fire service and architecture and "authorities having jurisdiction." It is a how- to and why guide to active systems. I recommend it highly. And, given that so many skyscrapers are now being built in Asia and in Latin America, I hope this is translated into Chinese, Korean, Spanish and Portuguese. - Richard A. Book Description

In classical life insurance mathematics the obligations of the insurance company towards the policy holders were calculated on artificial conservative assumptions on mortality and interest rates. However, this approach is being superseded by developments in international accounting and solvency standards coupled with other advances enabling a market-based valuation of risk, i.e., its price if traded in a free market. The book describes these new approaches, and is the first to explain them in conjunction with more traditional methods. The various chapters address specific aspects of market-based valuation. The exposition integrates methods and results from financial and insurance mathematics, and is based on the entries in a life insurance company's market accounting scheme. The book will be of great interest and use to students and practitioners who need an introduction to this area, and who seek a practical yet sound guide to life insurance accounting and product development.

5 out of 5 stars Earth-Shaking Paradigm Shift from a Very Prominent Biologist.......2004-10-28

Ruth Hubbard is a professor emerita of biology at Harvard and a member of the Council for Responsible Genetics, a prominent national bioethics board. In this book (co-written with her son-in-law, Elijah Wald), she takes everything you think you know about genes, genetic health care screening, DNA fingerprinting, the Human Genome Project, and the search for a gay gene and other behavior-related genes, and blows your mind by explaining, point by point, exactly how unreliable, meaningless, and discriminatory each of these much-lauded technologies is. After reading this book, you'll never read a newspaper article about the latest genetic study the same way again. Don't miss it.

1 out of 5 stars Rhetoric Against a Needed Science.......2001-11-18

Ruth Hubbard uses the rhetoric of exaggeration to try to convince us to abandon genetic research. But if genes didn't matter then monkeys could talk and if environment didn't matter then we wouldn't have schools. Obviously they BOTH matter.

Let us use the objective methods of science to document the specifics of what is genetically determined and what is environmentally determined.

Any serious AIDS researcher knows that without genetic research we have no chance of defeating AIDS. Obviously we need to study genetics to maintain progress against disease.

      5 out of 5 stars A brilliantly written book.......1999-10-28

Dr. Hubbard gives her readers much to think about, and she backs up everything she's written. She explains how the popularly-held reductionist view of genetics does not tell the whole story. Her book explains how the public often only hears one side of the story when it comes to the potential of the latest genetic technologies.

2 out of 5 stars The work of a good scientist, an abysmal social commentator.......1999-08-29

Hubbard does deserve credit for throwing some skepticism on "the next big thing" in science, genetic technology. Unfortunately, she combines her skeptical analysis with her hopelessly egalitarian political views, obscuring any positive contributions this book could have. Hubbard goes through every expected cliche - Nazi imagery (social pundits never tire of this), playing the "race card, and discouraging scientific progress as "unneccessary". Read this book only if you wish to glimpse the future of awful politically-correct rhetoric.

5 out of 5 stars The author breaks ranks to reveal the truth about genetics........1998-10-02

A 5-star book. If there weren't so much hype about gene therapy there would be no need for this book. But bad science and misinformation coming from those with commercial or political interests has given the American public the idea that gene therapy has possibilities. To date, gene therapy has not cured one disease. Ruth Hubbard finally breaks ranks to reveal the truth about genetics.

Actuaries are experts in assessing risk, so it is not surprising that over the past few years they have become involved in many new areas of financial planning, including the appraisal of major capital projects. In this collection of essays published to celebrate the Institute of Actuaries' 150th Anniversary, leading experts describe how actuarial concepts have contributed to many important social and financial developments, and how these ideas will continue to make financial sense of the future.Even non-mathematicians will find this book useful in understanding how the scientific bases of the insurance and pensions industries grew up, and how they work today. The authors each write from the perspective of their own special expertise. They include five former presidents of the Institute of Faculty of Actuaries.

4 out of 5 stars Actuarial Overview for beginners.......2000-04-28

I must say that this is one of the most interesting Actuarial books I have come across in a long time. Not only does it give a historical overview of the profession but also gives a candid view on the normally "boring" perception the greater public usually has on Actuaries in general. It gives details of Actuarial dinners held (!) which attendees solve complex probability problems over dinner. With both insights into the actuarial profession in insurance and financial fields to name a few, Life, Death and Money : Actuaries and the Creation of Financial Security, should prove interesting reading on the train or bus.

        Book Description

This book offers a mathematical introduction to non-life insurance and, at the same time, to a multitude of applied stochastic processes. It gives detailed discussions of the fundamental models for claim sizes, claim arrivals, the total claim amount, and their probabilistic properties. Throughout the book the language of stochastic processes is used for describing the dynamics of an insurance portfolio in claim size space and time. In addition to the standard actuarial notions, the reader learns about the basic models of modern non-life insurance mathematics: the Poisson, compound Poisson and renewal processes in collective risk theory and heterogeneity and Bühlmann models in experience rating. The reader gets to know how the underlying probabilistic structures allow one to determine premiums in a portfolio or in an individual policy. Special emphasis is given to the phenomena which are caused by large claims in these models. What makes this book special are more than 100 figures and tables illustrating and visualizing the theory. Every section ends with extensive exercises. They are an integral part of this course since they support the access to the theory. The book can serve either as a text for an undergraduate/graduate course on non-life insurance mathematics or applied stochastic processes. Its content is in agreement with the European "Groupe Consultatif" standards. An extensive bibliography, annotated by various comments sections with references to more advanced relevant literature, make the book broadly and easiliy accessible.
