Customer Reviews:
Reference.......2007-08-13
If you use the charts to look for trades, you have to buy this book. It's an awesome reference for charting.
Good Even for a Random Walker.......2007-07-22
This book is a very well written introduction to the Technical Analysis of the financial markets. It covers a lot of ground and for a text book style layout, it is surprisingly easy to read. Murphy starts with a solid introduction including the philosophy of technical analysis and a defense against the criticisms from academics and followers of the Random Walk Theory. The meat of the book is a comprehensive treatment of the core components of technical analysis including Trendlines, Reversal and Continuation Patterns, Moving Averages, and Oscillators. The author continues to dig deeper with Point & Figure Charts, Japanese Candlesticks, and Eliott Wave Theory.
As a big fan of Malkiel's "Random Walk Down Wall Street," I started reading this book with some healthy skepticism. While I was not converted to the chartist's philosophy, I felt like I did pick up some tools that could still be useful in a buy-and-hold strategy.
Everything a beginner needs to know.......2007-07-07
John Murphy's book explains nearly everything anyone who is looking to understand the technical side of the market could ask for.
PROS: Easy to follow. Starts from the ground up into the complicated stuff. Feels like a year's worth of college courses finished in a few weeks time. This is far and away the best overall stock book I've read to date. I'm making money now!
CONS: Spends a bit too much time on futures trading (for which the book was originally written) Doesn't get far enough into how much time should lapse as a pattern unfolds. Doesn't get much into the psychology of the trader's mind. Somewhat outdated on computer advances (not a big deal)
Classic Technical Analysis Book.......2007-06-28
I received 4 copies of this book during my course work at the NYIF, its an excellent referance manual for anyone applying Technical Analysis to the financial markets.
Excellent introduction to TA - an easy read.......2007-06-27
This is the first book I bought on TA and, honestly, it looked intimidating. It's not. Open it up and it reads cover to cover very quickly. Not too technical - not too basic. Just right. This is an excellent introduction to technical analysis: easy to read language, large print, nice heavy bright white pages. Oh, and the content is excellent as well: worded well, good organization, understandable examples and illustrations.

Good choice for education majors - easier to understand.......2007-10-05
Education majors at the graduate level will appreciate the straight forward approach of this book. Helps to take the "mystery" out of research with a down to earth approach while still getting the important points across to the reader.
Average Textbook.......2007-09-25
This edition has some minor changes from the 6th and 7th edition, mainly just page numbers. If you can find the 6th or 7th edition cheaper, it is vitural the same book
Easy Reading Research.......2007-02-13
Learning how to decipher the technical jargon surrounding research is never easy. This book makes it easy. Along with thorough explanations and an abundance of examples, there is a bit of humor tossed in. The humor helps break up the intense explanations. There are also many charts and graphs that help synthesize the information into an easy learning format. I would recommend this book for anyone who has to learn about research.
An Easy Read!.......2007-02-07
It's everything you need to know to prepare a thesis in a simple, easy-to-read book! I relied on it so much during my research activities.
Helpful Textbook.......2006-08-11
My only complaint about it was that the cover is warped. I bought a new book, had it delivered next-day, and it won't close properly.
The book has a lot of good information in it. I can see why my instructor chose it for the course in which I am enrolled.

Engineering Design: A Systematic Approach
ASIN: 0195134664 |
Book Description
Design education, research, and practice have recently seen considerable evolution as university programs, researchers, journals, and conferences systematize design as a discipline and science. Nam P. Suh's book Axiomatic Design: Advances and Applications contributes to this systematic and scientific base and presents a fresh perspective on design, establishing a rational framework for the discipline. The book follows Suh's successful publication, The Principles of Design (OUP 1990), although the two books are substantially different in both content and approach. The first three chapters of Axiomatic Design cover the fundamental principles of axiomatic design. The following chapters offer a complete treatment of the design of systems, software, materials and materials processing, manufacturing systems, and product design. Suh shows how a scientific and systematic approach to design improves efficiency, productivity, savings, reliability, and quality for industries that currently rely on ad hoc design systems; Axiomatic Design contains the principles and practical knowledge necessary to achieve these improvements. Perfect for senior and graduate design and mechanical engineering students as well as professional engineers, this unique text offers the tools necessary to design with ease and elegance and serves as a stepping-stone in the ever-evolving intellectual science of design. Features BL Applies the principles of axiomatic design to a variety of real-life situations including mechanism design, software engineering, and basic business processes BL Includes numerous integrated case studies using axiomatic design to solve real-life design challenges BL Draws material from consulting cases with industrial firms throughout the world BL Requires no prerequisite reading (The Principles of Design can be read for clarification)
Customer Reviews:
Very questionable science, and many errors in text.......2005-12-08
I bought this book for a readings class this semester. I don't have a suitable vocabulary to describe how poor it is. The text is inconsistent and full of errors. The author blathers on without concluding much. He references his previous work and that of PhD theses (which I can only assume are his own students). I question the underlying assumptions of his theory but it is never fleshed out in sufficient detail to be understood and examined.
Some examples:
Page 8, the author discusses history, "there were no exceptions or counterexamples (to Newton's laws) until Einstein advanced the theory of relativity". Really? How about Maxwell's equations, the Michelson-Morley experiments, the theory of the ether, Mercury's orbit around the Sun?
Page 18, The author uses matrix algebra notation and operations on nonlinear equations. Superposition does not apply to nonlinear equations.
Example 1-13, consists of a redesign problem where one constraint is "no increase in cost", and the solution to the example problem is to add a component to the existing design. And that component is free?
Title of one section: "Reduction of uncertainty: Conversion of a design with time-dependent combinatorial complexity to a design with time-dependent periodic complexity".
It goes on. I made it about 100 pages into it.
What is important here?.......2004-02-22
One of great emerging ideas in the past 20 years is that there are tools to help in the design of robust products and systems. There are other approaches: TRIZ, QFD and other heuristic-based methods. There are also references to Dr. Taguchi's robust design methods (DFSS). The point is that the author here has made his point - DFSS as applied to multi-requirement products and systems... and that includes just about every product/system we use and need... has an overlooked flaw. Read this book to understand what that flaw is and how to address it.
Is the material here ambitious and audacious? Well... yes, wouldn't it be if the author were on to something? I think that the key here is to understand where this information can be immediately used in engineering practice. The principle of design decoupling and Okcam's Razor are not particularly new ideas, but the way that the author is approaching the subject is important. He is trying to get a handle on something that has been to date very heuristically practiced, and often not well executed. If one understands the principles of, for instance, software engineering, it doesn't take long to understand where the author is going with his subject. Suh is a mechanical engineer (MIT), and this fact, in itself, is very surprizing and encouraging. The axioms that Suh present are necessary in order to achieve some sort of order to the discussion. I personally have managed to get past the initial objections to his reuse of certain terms and emphasis on certain axioms. For instance, Suh's principle of "minimum information content" is actually a statement about "less is more" in design from a reliability and design-robustness perspective.
Now for potential buyers: understand that there are applications of this method and theory that are extremely powerful and effective. This method has great implications to the field of systems engineering - it ties the SE discipline to something that you can get your hands on. In particular, look to the application of the method to the design of physical systems and their corresponding manufacturing systems. This isn't a trivial or invalid subject.
People who need ways to handle complexity and the total system design problem will benefit as will designers of common products. Software and hardware designers can both benefit, although the author uses language that is more recognizable in the realm of mechanical engineering and manufacturing systems. This material will take some time to integrate into your own storehouse of knowledge - so don't rush it. Approach this material with a need in hand, but with the understanding that it will likely modify your view of your discipline. Then you will make use of this material. Note the bibliographies; dig into the applications of this theory. You won't be disappointed in the outcome.
A False Science.......2002-03-08
Is design a science? Or, can design be a science?
The author tries to conclude the principles for "good designs" into two axioms, then use them as the scientific approach to conduct the design activities. It is ambitious and audacious. Unfortunately, this is a false science. The paradox of the author's intent lies on the fact that science, by definition, should be repeatable and universal. However, regardless of the two controversial "axioms", which have been refuted in many literature among the design community, they themselve do not guarantee that different people will arrive on the same design. They are, at most, two design principles that may not be 100% true, depending on the cases.
The domain and tasks of design, is too broad and versatile to be abstracted by any "axioms", 'cause design is a mental process of creativity, and so far no one can sucessfully describe creativity in scientific terms.
Therefore, the answer is "no" to the question in the beginning of the review, at least not for this book.

Well written for the beginner.......2007-07-19
This book is great for the person new to Calculus as I was at the time I went through an earlier version. The examples are well written, with the steps easy to follow. Interim steps to the result are not skipped as has been the case with other Calculus books I've read. The book begins very simply, so someone with just algebra can follow. I can not overstate the importance of working through the problems though, that was the only way I came to appreciate Calculus. What I liked most about this book was that it had alot of applications to real life, using economic, business and science examples. I learn best when I can apply the information directly to my work, and this text did a good job of allowing me to do that.
I would also like to state that the way some of the word problems are stated can be misleading. Section 7.6, problem 17, for example is a maximizing problem and if one applies the approach suggested in the book, then area is not maximized, because more area can be derived by applying the circumference to a circle.
Calculus and Its Applications, Eighth Edition.......2005-09-30
Probably I did not read the description of this book carefully, that is why not what I expected. Anyway, the transaction was very pleasant!!!
Very good for a beginner taking calculus.......1998-07-20
Its examples and explanations are very good. It contains the essentials of Calculus and good applications in many fields, e.g. biology, economics, etc.

Book Description
"This is a first-class book dealing with one of the most important areas of current research in applied statistics…the methods described are widely applicable…the standard of exposition is extremely high."
--Short Book Reviews from the International Statistical Institute
"The new chapters (10-14) improve an already excellent resource for research and instruction. Their content expands the coverage of the book to include models for discrete level-1 outcomes, non-nested level-2 units, incomplete data, and measurement error---all vital topics in contemporary social statistics. In the tradition of the first edition, they are clearly written and make good use of interesting substantive examples to illustrate the methods. Advanced graduate students and social researchers will find the expanded edition immediately useful and pertinent to their research."
--TED GERBER, Sociology, University of Arizona
"Chapter 11 was also exciting reading and shows the versatility of the mixed model with the EM algorithm. There was a new revelation on practically every page. I found the exposition to be extremely clear. It was like being led from one treasure room to another, and all of the gems are inherently useful. These are problems that researchers face everyday, and this chapter gives us an excellent alternative to how we have traditionally handled these problems."
--PAUL SWANK, Houston School of Nursing, University of Texas, Houston
Popular in the
First Edition for its rich, illustrative examples and lucid explanations of the theory and use of hierarchical linear models (HLM), the book has been reorganized into four parts with four completely new chapters. The first two parts, Part I on "The Logic of Hierarchical Linear Modeling" and Part II on "Basic Applications" closely parallel the first nine chapters of the previous edition with significant expansions and technical clarifications, such as:
* An intuitive introductory summary of the basic procedures for estimation and inference used with HLM models that only requires a minimal level of mathematical sophistication in Chapter 3
* New section on multivariate growth models in Chapter 6
* A discussion of research synthesis or meta-analysis applications in Chapter 7
* Data analytic advice on centering of level-1 predictors and new material on plausible value intervals and robust standard estimators
While the first edition confined its attention to continuously distributed outcomes at level 1, this second edition now includes coverage of an array of outcomes types in Part III:
* New Chapter 10 considers applications of hierarchical models in the case of binary outcomes, counted data, ordered categories, and multinomial outcomes using detailed examples to illustrate each case
* New Chapter 11 on latent variable models, including estimating regressions from missing data, estimating regressions when predictors are measured with error, and embedding item response models within the framework of the HLM model
* New introduction to the logic of Bayesian inference with applications to hierarchical data (Chapter 13)
The authors conclude in Part IV with the statistical theory and computations used throughout the book, including univariate models with normal level-1 errors, multivariate linear models, and hierarchical generalized linear models.
Customer Reviews:
pre-req: mid-level stats experience.......2006-07-12
I had taken a class in HLM before, and I bought this book to refresh myself on the details. It takes a good deal of attention to detail and concentration to really get the full measure from this book, although it's all in there. Despite the authors' best efforts, there is a good bit of stats jargon in the book, so a reader who is not familiar might have some difficulty. If you're at a point where learning HLM is a logical next step, you'll be fine and I recommend this book. However, if your over-eager faculty advisor told you to learn HLM, despite your minimal experience in stats, you're better off enrolling in a class or workshop.
Good but sometimes skipping ahead too fast.......2006-03-09
This book gives a detailed description of the use of an advanced method to deal with nested data sets.
At a general level the constructs and ideas are well written and can be followed reasonably easily.
However the mathematics is often written very dense, which makes reading and understanding complex.
My main problem with the book, is that in many of the examples they provide, the given formula's, and data skip rapidly to the solution. Thus it is often not insightfull at all, how the data led to the numerical outcome (and I and several of my colleagues could not reproduce all of the example outcomes). A more extensive discussion and a more step-by-step construction of the examples would have been helpful there.
So in short: Conceptually this book is fine, but for practical use mathematics are too dense, and examples are too hard to follow
Useful, but need solid background in stats.......2004-06-05
This book describes important advances in statistical analysis of social science data, circa 1992. Much of this data has a natural hierarchical grouping. But traditional statistical methods proved inadequate at coping. The biggest drawback was the failure of the assumption of independence. If at the lowest level, Items I1,...,In are grouped into sets J1,...,Jm, where m
To handle this, Hierarchical Linear Models were developed. The book gives a detailed treatment. A very comprehensive discussion. Including the handling of meta-analysis, where we wish to combine results across different studies. Which then involves using empirical Bayesian estimates. This method has also seen important usage in evaluating medical studies, conducted by different researchers on the same topic.
The book also illustrates the essential development of non-trivial computer programs to perform the gruntwork.
You will need a solid background in statistics to find this book useful. At a minimum, a year of statistics at the undergraduate level.

needs complete student manual.......2007-09-28
could be better if included the solution manual for all the sections, not only for chapters 1-7
Very clear, great for learning and understanding quickly, a bit slow at times.......2006-06-16
This book is simply clearer than any other complex analysis book I've read, although it's not particularly advanced or concise.
This book is a great text for undergraduates studying complex analysis for the first time. It does not assume a strong background in rigorous analysis, making the material accessible to a wider audience.
At times I find that this book moves a bit slow for my personal taste, but what it loses in speed it makes up for in clarity. The explanations are always clear. I find that I never get stuck in a proof in this book. If there is a certain topic that I absolutely must understand, and I want to understand in a straightforward, useful way, as quick as possible, I turn to this book.
I would recommend this book for self-study as well as a textbook at the introductory level. It is not a particularly advanced book, and is not comprehensive as a reference for more advanced students, nor would it be a great choice for a graduate or advanced course.
If you like a well written, applied, operational kind book........2005-09-28
If you like mathematics but prefer an operational approach instead of the abstract approach, you will like this book.
An ideal complement to Calculus books (like Piskunov, Thomas Jr., etc.) that do not emphasize Complex Variables.
Clear explanations. Many examples. Relatively fast to read, that is, you will not stop the reading trying to demonstrate those boring "easy to show statements".
Pleased.......2005-07-05
The book was in great shape and I liked the math help websites included.
Excellent intro. to complex analysis!.......2004-06-19
This course was my first exposure to the mathematical field of analysis at the undergraduate level, and our school ditched Gamelin's book used two years ago in favor of this book. Just to give you an idea of the difference a book makes (it was the same teacher for both courses, mind you): when Gamelin was used, EVERYONE dropped out of the course; when Brown/Churchill was used, only one person dropped the course and half the class received A's!
Truly, this is a remarkable shift, and this book had a lot to do with it. I thought the organization was flawless (note: you will have to go through the book in order, as many examples depend on previous material), and starting from the beginning with the definition of a complex number was definitely the way to go, as about 1/3 of my class had never seen a complex number before. I loved the fact that there were many examples worked out (never explicitly showing people how to do the end-of-section exercises, but showing them the methods for where to go) and the major theorems were alloted many pages for clear proofs with diagrams and detailed explanations (an entire section was devoted to a proof of the Cauchy-Goursat theorem!). Also, the choices of problems were superb, with some routine exercises meant to get you thinking along the right tracks followed by some very difficult ones. Basically, enough to challenge even the ablest math student, but enough for the average one to get a grasp on the concepts as well.
The book also provides an advantage for the instructor as to what applications to teach. Granted, chapters 1-6 cover almost all the theory, but 7-12 are all applications (7 is "usually" considered theoretical as well, but it is called "applications of residues!") in physics, advanced calculus and geometry, and engineering. So, a professor could choose to emphasize only the theoretical parts and save the apps. for independent study (which my prof. did) or could teach the relevant theories coupled with some of the applications (conformal mapping with fluid flow and heat flow, for example). It truly is a versatile book.
I noticed a complaint on here about not having enough examples or worked-out proofs. Well, to that individual (and any others who might be having the same problem), this book is meant for an upper-level undergraduate course, which means that there are going to be less examples worked out in great detail, the proofs may just be thumbnail sketches, and the problems will not have a quick reference page in the chapter for a formula or method like in calculus, for example; even though the book is versatile, a lot of the learning still falls on the student's shoulders.
My one and only gripe is that the book didn't take a lot of time to spell out how to perform a delta-epsilon proof for limits, which is one of the basic proofs in analysis. But, luckily, I had a very patient instructor who was willing to walk it through with me (most of the rest of the class had already had real analysis, so they didn't need to go over it). But, still, it's not enough to take it down a star, in my opinion.
They say this book is among the canon of undergraduate mathematics, and I can certainly see why. What a great introduction to complex analysis! This book will definitely be accompanying me to grad school!

Decent book on trading systems, however..........2007-09-30
This is not a bad book on trading systems, however, take it with a grain of salt considering the outcome of the authors' trading company - search the SEC website for the last names of the authors, or Google the names with "SEC" included in the search...
I have real reservations & concerns about this one..........2007-06-28
Despite the apparent sophistication of the many diverse trading strategies and systems introducted in this book, none of them seem to back-test well on historical data in TradeStation. By well; I mean any better than most simple moving average cross-over systems! So why bother paying $100 for the book and another $200 for the software CDROM?
I also emailed the author for help getting these sytems to work at all on FOREX. Theoretically, this should be doable by changing profit target and other stop variables. He returned my emails twice promising support but then I never heard from him again.
I'm left with the impression that these systems just don't work on either stocks or FOREX. Buyer beware.
Shop around.......2007-05-08
I have not yet read the book but quickly discovered a couple of things of which you might want to be aware. The software is "included" in that the last 60 or 70 pages (sorry...I have already packaged it for return) are source code. The software is not provided in an electronic format. You are referred to the author's website to purchase the software "pretyped". Figuring it would be worth it to avoid the typing and typos, I went to the website to discover that the software is $199 and the book is $99. Since Amazon listed the book new for $199 and used for around $180, I was slightly annoyed and will be attempting to return the book.
Bottom Line - price shop this!
Alright.......2007-03-28
Lets not get too excited. Not sure how much reading and technical analysis other readers have done, while I think some of the book is useful other parts of it seem to be a waste and pretty basic. It wasnt what I was looking for and the price seems way too high. Seems for whatever reason its out of print in the stores so the author and his company are selling it for a huge mark up. Didnt get the software and the code doesnt work the way it is written in the book, either out of date or needs to be updated TS code.
Unless you really want it, I would pass on this one at the price offered.
Software in book runs perfectly but has not been helpful to me........2007-01-27
I purchased the book in an attempt to jump start developing an automated rule based trading system. The software runs perfectly without problems. Unfortunately I have not found the strategies or indicators to be helpful after testing them on limited historical data. I have found the book (and software on a CD that comes with the book) "New Trading Systems and Methods" by Perry J. Kaufman to be extremely helpful in developing a rule based automated trading system.

Well organized but poor explanations for "on the go" use. .......2007-07-08
Perhaps the biggest short coming of this book is the author's assumption that you will sit down and read the book from cover to cover. He writes each chapter under the assumption that you have just finished the chapter before and completed all prior exercises. Rather than explaining concepts "cold turkey" he references earlier examples and give short, curt explanations for functionality. If you're in the working world and need a quick answer, this is not the book for you. You're better off with another book of even Access help on Microsoft's web site. Although the author clearly knows his material, this book is only best used in a classroom setting and not for real-world reference.
Very useful book.......2007-06-02
Yes, that's a very useful book. And the title don't lies, is a book for people that know the basics of access and wants to walk on the possibilities on data analysis.
For Intermediate Users.......2007-05-12
This book is not for novices. However, slack a bit of deep programming. This book shows you the power inside MS Accesss through the macros and wizards. Show you the first steps in order to master Access to do what you want.
If you seek more programming tips, you will need other book. However, it's a great book.
Great book........2007-04-16
I just bought this book for 28 USD, and when I got it I thought it had not much content. As I flipped through its pages, I found out it only describes how to use Access, but it has not many application examples, if any.
This makes sense, because statistics and its presentation tools as are pivot tables and pivot charts in their varied forms, are user and application specific. So, this book is small with merely 12 chapters in or around 338 pages and the rest of the book to complete the 486 pages of content is made up of apendices, meaning that it's more of a reference book to whet your appetite to use Access as a Data Analysis tool and move away from Excel, which I strongly, strongly recommend you do as soon as possible for the power of Access as a fully functional database software.
Overall, it's a very good book, but I gave it a 4 out of 5, because if you already use pivot tables and pivot charts in Access, you will mostly be using the apendices for reference on formulas and VBA functions, which is a little overpriced for what it delivers. If you already use access to analyze data to the pivot table and charts level, you won't be needing much of its content, so I'd recommend you buy a used copy of the book.
Otherwise, if you're ready to move to data analysis from Excel to Access, this is the book for you to get you started and making you a true expert in managing Access' powerful features.
Very good book.......2007-03-31
I'm a Financial Analyst and I found this book extremely useful. I knew how to buit databases without programming but this book brought me to the next level. I strongly recommend it to a Financial / Data Analyst (not a programmer) interested in automating various business processes.
