Book Description
Expert coverage of the design and implementation of state estimation algorithms for tracking and navigation
Estimation with Applications to Tracking and Navigation treats the estimation of various quantities from inherently inaccurate remote observations. It explains state estimator design using a balanced combination of linear systems, probability, and statistics.
The authors provide a review of the necessary background mathematical techniques and offer an overview of the basic concepts in estimation. They then provide detailed treatments of all the major issues in estimation with a focus on applying these techniques to real systems. Other features include:
- Problems that apply theoretical material to real-world applications
- In-depth coverage of the Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) estimator
- Companion DynaEst(TM) software for MATLAB(TM) implementation of Kalman filters and IMM estimators
- Design guidelines for tracking filters
Suitable for graduate engineering students and engineers working in remote sensors and tracking, Estimation with Applications to Tracking and Navigation provides expert coverage of this important area.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book on estimation/Kalman filter.......2004-09-29
I don't usually write online reviews but this book is so clear and useful that I really want to recommend it to others. It is well written with a good outline and summary for every chapter. It also has a pretty diverse range of topics on estimation, including an introductory chapter on basic estimation approaches (e.g., ML, MAP, least squares), and very practical extensions (e.g., state augmentation, square-root filters). Even though I am not in EE and some of the examples are thus not particularly helpful to me, I still find this book one of the best of all the estimation/Kalman filter books out there.
best standard book for target tracking system.......2001-05-09
I think any person who major in target tracking system related to the Kalman filter must see this book. This book present the fundamentals of state estimation theory and the tools for the design of state-of-the-art algorithms for target tracking.
The book covers the basic concepts and estimation techniques for static and dynamic systems, linear and nonlinear, as well as adaptive estiomation. This constitutes a one semester graduate course in estimation theory in an electrical/systems engineering program.
The discussion deals mainly with discrete time estimation algorithms, which are natural for digital computer implementation. The basic state estimation algorithm-the Kalman filter-is presented in discrete as well as in continuous time. The use of the estimation algorithms is illustrated on kinematic motion models because they reveal all the major issues and in particular the subtleties encountered in estimation, and this serves as an introdution to tracking.
Guidelines for tracking filter design-selection of the filter design parameters-are given and illustrated in several examples.
At the end of each chapter, a number of problems that enhance the understanding of the theory and the connection of the theoretical material to the real world are given.
And I have this book as text for my paper.

Customer Reviews:
Poorly written book for the engineer. Might be useful for a mathemtician.......2007-10-03
Let me be the first to slam this book as having little practical use. The author uses a very unconventional, inconsistent notation that renders this book virtually unreadable. This is coming from somebody who has taken various courses in probability/stochastic processes, system dynamics, controls, and Kalman filtering.
The "theory" part in the title is dead on, but what about the "for the user" part? What user is this referring to, an ivory tower professor? Most of the problems at the end of each chapter begin with "prove", which in my opinion makes this a math book and not an engineering text. A practical example never surfaces in the text.
good reference.......2007-03-08
This book is a fundamental volume for whoever is interested in identification techniques. Theory is explained clearly.
A Complete Text for System Identification.......2001-09-12
This book is very through in presenting methods of system identification...mathematically. However as with most good mathematical oriented books there are not a lot of practical design type problems. One other mark aginst the book is that similar notation is used for different topics, which can sometimes be a bit confusing. One thing I might recommend, to a potential buyer is that you take a course in random process, and possess a through understanding of signals and transforms. All in all though if a little more meat in terms of practicality were added I'd rate this book a five.
excellent book.......2001-02-20
An excellent textbook for engineers, and a necessary reference for Matlab toolbox (System Identification).

Good Textbook.......2007-03-15
Purchased this for a computer science course since it was required. Great price at Amazon!
Needs a good instructor to go along with it.......2006-05-09
An excellent reference, but it is an embarassment of riches, and as such it can't completely cover every area exhaustively. This would probably be extremely frustrating for a casual reader to absorb. I used this as a text book for a class with an extremely good instructor who backed up the material in the book very well. As such, the class and the book were a joy.
Hard.......2005-10-28
Even though the topics of this book are absolutely great and crucial for any CS student, I dislike the entire book !, its hard to follow the writer, i find it hard to keep with him !
too many complicated information with either Tiny explaination or more complicated explaination ,
its a very big book with many topics , i prefer reading seperate books with specific topics rather than this book,
Nice Book!.......2005-05-25
I just completed a college course using this textbook... the course was tough, but the book was very good and useful. This is one textbook I won't be selling any time soon!
The practice problems provided in the book were usually very good, and the programming problems distributed with it were fun and educational, including topics like Buffer Overflows, Memory Optimizations, and Debugging with GDB, among others.
There are *some* problems with this book, but it doesn't suffer from the devastating flaws that plague most computer science textbooks. Some sections lack thorough explanations and examples, and the writting is a bit unclear at times. Some solutions to the practice problems are vague and don't really provide much insight on how to solve the problems. Luckily, these flaws only creep up in a few places.
Compared to most technical textbooks, however, this one really shines. It's not quite perfect, so I think 4 stars is appropriate.
Everything you need to know as a programmer.......2005-03-25
What a splendid book! I wish I has gone to CMU and take this course. This book is written by CMU professors after teaching Computer Systems course for few years. This book covers broad spectrum of topics from Operating Systems, Compilers, Computer Architecture, Assembly Level Programming, Kernel internals, Linkers, etc from a programmer's perspective (as the title aptly says).
I am searching for words to describe the usefulness of this book. In my experience, I have had hard time learning some of the topics where Operating systems, Processor and Compilers intersect. For example, Linkers and Loaders, program disassembly using reverse-engineering, virtual memory in Kernel etc. After all the hard work, I found the right book which grinds all the famous books in different areas and gives the right juice for the real programmers to taste and digest.
Those famous books are:
[1] Computer Organization and Design Second Edition : The Hardware/Software Interface by David A. Patterson, John L. Hennessy
[2] UNIX Internals: The New Frontiers by Uresh Vahalia
[3] Linux Kernel Development by Robert Love
[4] Linkers and Loaders by John R. Levine
[5] GNU Binutils (GAS, objdump, ar, nm etc) Documentation
Excellent job. I really appreciate the work and content of this book.

Book Description
The latest tested and proven strategies to maintain business resiliency and sustainability for our ever-growing global digital economy
Here is a comprehensive study of the fundamentals of mission critical systems, which are designed to maintain ultra-high reliability, availability, and resiliency of electrical, mechanical, and digital systems and eliminate costly downtime. Readers learn all the skills needed to design, fine tune, operate, and maintain mission critical equipment and systems. Practical in focus, the text helps readers configure and customize their designs to correspond to their organizations' unique needs and risk tolerance. Specific strategies are provided to deal with a wide range of contingencies from power failures to human error to fire. In addition, the author highlights measures that are mandated by policy and regulation.
The author of this text has worked in mission critical facilities engineering for more than twenty years, serving clients in banking, defense, utilities, energy, and education environments. His recommendations for maintaining essential operations are based on firsthand experience of what works and what does not.
Most chapters in this text concentrate on an individual component of the mission critical system, including standby generators, automatic transfer switches, uninterruptible power supplies, and fuel, fire, and battery systems. For each component, the author sets forth applications, available models, design choices, standard operating procedures, emergency action plans, maintenance procedures, and applicable codes and standards. Extensive use of photographs and diagrams illustrates how individual components and integrated systems work.
With the rapid growth of e-commerce and 24/7 business operations, mission critical systems have moved to the forefront of concerns among both private and public operations. Facilities engineers, senior administrators, and business continuity professionals involved in information technology and data center design should consult this text regularly to ensure they have done everything they can to protect and sustain their operations to reduce human error, equipment failures, and other critical events. Adapted from material the author has used in academic and professional training programs, this guide is also an ideal desktop reference and textbook.
Customer Reviews:
Light on content, disorganized.......2007-06-04
This book has some good sections, which are fine by themselves. However, I found the power chapters in the first part of the book to be disorganized and poorly written. The diagrams are not clear at all, and many have a lot of information in them that should have been removed. Almost like they did cut and paste without making them relevant to the text. Many diagrams are missing labels and annotations as well. There is a chapter on power quality that starts with a very dubious analogy about grades of gasoline and sports cars and the importance of using high quality power. Then the start of the next chapter says that modern equipment can use a large range of voltages and really power quality isn't important, availability of power is. Uh...great. So, I feel the continuity of the book was poor. I haven't finished everything, but so far, I am not impressed.
As far as the content that is there, I don't feel this is really an engineering oriented book. I didn't feel there were enough methods to really made decisions about availability or reliability, just general ideas, which we all have anyway (downtime is bad, uptime is good, etc).
I don't feel it really helps you understand WHY things are, mainly it rehashes industry best practices, which in many cases are driven by the vendors who are selling products used to increase services availability. There is an interesting appendix about the national power infrastructure, but it covers a lot of things that are already in the book, which is kinda strange. This is a collection of articles, not a book really.

A basic grounding in one of today's quickly evolving technologies. To gain one's bearing in the whirlwind of rapid development in the digital theory arena, getting a firm grasp of the basics is vital. This book provides a solid foundation in the elements of basic digital electronic and switching theory. Down to earth, yet scholarly in approach, it builds on theory with discussions of real-world digital components, design methodologies, and tools. A companion Web site provides additional information.
Customer Reviews:
Poor Intro to Digital.......2005-05-22
This book was assigned for my undergrad intro digital logic class. It is probably the worst possible introduction to the subject. The material is only mildly to moderately difficult in practice, but the authors managed to make it convoluted. If you are unfortunate enough to have this book assigned, I suggest that you purchase another textbook on the subject, and just get the homework problems from your classmates or from the reserve copy at the library.
A Book Not To Read.......2002-11-01
This book is absolutely horrible. The Professor who teaches this class with this book HE WROTE, is utterly dispicible because of his teaching ability. This professor, at UC Irvine does not know the one bit in teaching a COMPLICATED subject like Digital Systems to a class who has had little to no experiece with this type of work. I hope this book is revoked for any reason, and hope that professor reads this review in order to gain some knowledge about the way he is teaching a class of Engineers in an era where knowledge is not automatically achieved, rather taught by knowledgable instructors.
Tell your teacher to get another book!.......2000-06-26
I used this book for an introductory logic design class. I was able to learn from it, but it was difficult. The teacher didn't even use it much. The book was not well written and hard to understand. I recommend learning from another book.
Good reference, poor for beginners.......2000-03-29
I began learning about hardware design with this book. Now I use it for reference.
But for beginners, this is not a very good book. Although hardware design is somewhat difficult to explain, the book does not analyze subjects in detail or how circuits work. When it does try to explain topics, it does not do so clearly and provides few examples. Unless you have outside help (such as a teacher, professor, teaching assistant, etc.), I would definitely recommend finding another book to learn about hardware design because you will struggle while trying to figure out how things work (if you are a novice).
If you want something detailed, this book ain't it.......1999-05-25
This book is very "bare" when and it doesn't offer enought examples. This book is difficult to understand and takes deciphering the material takes many tedious hours. Therefore, I would like to conclude by saying this is absolutly the worst text book that was ever written.

Too shallow to be helpful.......2005-12-25
Mechatronics is the synergistic combination of mechanical engineering ("mecha" for mechanisms), electronic engineering ("tronics" for electronics), and software engineering. The purpose of this interdisciplinary engineering field serves the purposes of designing and controlling advanced hybrid-systems. This textbook is widely used in classes on mechatronics, but I find it much too shallow to be helpful. It is a good introduction to what mechatronics is, but past that point mechanical engineers will not be enlightened about electronics, as electronics engineers will not be enlightened about mechanics. Also, in my opinion, this book has more of a technician's handbook feel about it than it does that of an engineering text. If you are a mechanical or electronics engineer that really wants to learn about this fascinating field, might I recommend "Mechatronics: An Integrated Approach" by De Silva. It has the content you need to do analysis and design of mechatronic systems. I see Amazon does not show a table of contents for this book, so I do that here for the purpose of completeness:

Customer Reviews:
An excellent book for scientists and engineers.......2006-02-10
The book "Engineering and Scientific Computing" in Scilab,
presents clearly the elements of the Scilab language.
A scientist with some programming background,
even elementary, can readily learn and exploit the
elegant and compact Scilab scientific programming
environment.
However, the strongest point of the book is its tutorial
value. The reader can through the Scilab tool,
improve the knowledge of important signal processing topics,
exploit algorithms for the numerical solution of ODEs and
tackle with optimization problems. Furthermore, the book contains
excellent material on SCICOS (the dynamical system builder
that accompanies Scilab) and a lot of applications.
The CD that is included with the book is also very helpful.
The presented scientific applications are aimed mainly
to the advanced scientists and engineers, although a large part
can be utilized and by undergraduate students of an intermediate
level.
In summary, I liked and enjoyed this book and I strongly
recommend it to all the scientific/engineering community.
Fine book on an excellent software.......2001-07-11
This is a good book describing an excellent free scientific Matlab-like software package available for many computing platforms. It complements well the extensive on-line help of the software and the information available on the Web.
The first three chapters gives a condensed overview of the software. I found the description of the graphics capabilities particularly useful as a reference. The next two chapters describe the use of the software for linear algebra, polynomials, linking to C and FORTRAN, and more advanced aspects. The remaining chapters concern tools and applications mainly of a system oriented nature. The tools are generally of a very high quality and accuracy, but of course slower than in compiled languages.
The book would have been been even more useful if it included more information on how to customize the software and a more comprehensive index. Also, the linking to C and FORTRAN routines does not appear to be completely simple.
Book Description
". . . an authentic magnum opus worth much more than its weight in gold!"-IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, from a review of the First Edition
"The best book I've seen on the subject of Kalman filtering . . . Reading other books on Kalman filters and not this one could make you a very dangerous Kalman filter engineer."-Amazon.com, from a review of the First Edition
In this practical introduction to Kalman filtering theory and applications, authors Grewal and Andrews draw upon their decades of experience to offer an in-depth examination of the subtleties, common problems, and limitations of estimation theory as it applies to real-world situations. They provide many illustrative examples drawn from an array of application areas including GPS-aided INS, the modeling of gyros and accelerometers, inertial navigation, and freeway traffic control. In addition, they share many hard-won lessons about, and original methods for, designing, implementing, validating, and improving Kalman filters, including techniques for:
* Representing the problem in a mathematical model
* Analyzing estimator performance as a function of model parameters
* Implementing the mechanization equations in numerically stable algorithms
* Assessing computational requirements
* Testing the validity of results
* Monitoring filter performance in operation
As the best way to understand and master a technology is to observe it in action, Kalman Filtering: Theory and Practice Using MATLAB(r), Second Edition includes companion software in MATLAB(r), providing users with an opportunity to experience first hand the filter's workings and its limitations.
This updated and revised edition of Grewal and Andrews's classic guide is an indispensable working resource for engineers and computer scientists involved in the design of aerospace and aeronautical systems, global positioning and radar tracking systems, power systems, and biomedical instrumentation.
An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutions to all the problems in the book is available from the Wiley editorial department.

Not enough examples..........2004-03-19
This book is difficult to understand due to the lack of simple examples to illustrate keep points as they are introduced.
There are a few examples in each chapter, however the authors skip too many steps and make you constantly flip around in the book to review previous examples upon which he bases the new examples. The end result is just wasteful trashing by the student.
This is a good book, but it does't have enough textbook examples to be used for an intro class in Kalam filtering.
Maybe this book would be useful as a secondary reference for a person that already knows Kalman filtering.
Most useful text on the subject.......2002-12-03
I have been working with "Kalman Fitering, ... Using Matlab",
2nd Edition, for several weeks, and I must tell you it is by far the
most useful text on the subject.
Kalman what???.......2002-11-27
I have to say this is a strange book on Kalman filtering - the structure of the book is probably as incoherent as the presentation. It is not a good book for a student wishing to learn Kalman Filtering and how to adapt it to practical problems.
I think the authors assume that the readers all know about Kalman filters and as far as introductions are concerned, only need to know the history of it. Indeed it is not until chapter 4.2 that you get any acknowledgement of the actual filter the rest of the book is peripheral information that would apply if you were a seasoned Kalman Filter expert.
The weird thing is that anyone with a detailed knowledge of Kalman Filtering would certainly know everything there was to know about matrix algebra, and so Appendix B has a tutorial or refresher on matrix forms - weird.
The notation also appears non standard and there are many sections where equation variables are not well explained and the examples very obsure and the premable non existent.
This is not a good book for any one wishing to either familiarise themselves with Kalman filtering - there is some good information in this but it is not a text book by any stretch of the imagination.
