Excellent, full of examples, easy to follow.......2006-09-20
This book is one of the best, most thorough and well explained textbooks I have encountered in the past 5 years of school. The authors, one of whom is teaching my course, present their explanations in a way that is both thorough and accessible. This is not a cookbook by any means - it is a very solid, detailed foundation for power electronics, and doesn't gloss over the important concepts like other books in the field. If you're just looking for a reference book with equations, circuits, and tables, this isn't for you. However, if you're looking for a text to study and understand in detail, you'll be right at home.
This book, when read and studied regularly, is very easy to follow and concepts are driven-home with solid examples. Very well done.

Lots of information with some open ended information.......2004-04-08
I would agree with the other reviewer that this is not a "how to" book. The book approaches the subject from an academic viewpoint. The reader is expected to fill in between the lines with previous experience. It appears that the authors, professors as U of C, supplement the text with worked out examples for their students. I would recomend it to people already versed in the subject and want more information.I found it for half price and this makes it worth buying as a reference.
Execellent Book.......2004-03-06
First off, this book is NOT a cookbook. It will not tell you how to design a power supply for a specific application. But this is not the books purpose. This book is written for those who wish to understand in depth knowledge of power conversion. It is written as a text book. If the reader took the time to understand what is written (and it is written well) then the person would be able to design a power supply for any application using any topolgy. It teaches you the first principles of power conversion in order for you to apply it. Out of all my power electronic books this is my favorite book by far. If you are a power supply designer this book is a must.
Powerfully good.......2004-01-10
Fundamentals of Power Electronics, by Erickson and Maksimovic, has become one of my new favorite reference books for DC-DC Converter design. My library is full of similar books, but most only contain insignificant bits of information, are needlessly difficult, or just plain worthless (but a requisite in the power engineering bookcase). The massive FPE combines the best of them all, exceeding even my former favorites (those by Tater, Billings, or Pressman). Although written as a textbook with the usual exercises at the end of each chapter (and frustratingly, with no answers) it is full of practical, applicable information. It has excellent chapters on inductors and transformers, with practical information such as inter-weaved windings for reduced leakage. It has one of the best treatments of Bode plots than any one book I have contains (I can now retire my old Valkenburg). Thankfully, it does not waste pages with useless Nyquist or other esoteric loop stability analysis methods. Nice index and appendix. I wish Maksimovic had included a section on his famous switched-capacitor circuit, even if not technically a power circuit. I highly recommend this book for any engineer seriously involved in power electronics.

Very useful book - faulty cover!.......2007-09-01
The book is a comprehensive review of 6Sigma tools and 6Sigma Project management life cycle. Hard reading. Recommended if there is no fault with the book! This suppose to be a new book from amazon.com I can not send it back as this is very heavy and I need it!!
Book " Implementing 6 sigma: Smarter solutions using statistical methods".......2007-05-26
Excellent condition of the book, as they mentioned, it arrived on time according to what the deal was, this is an excellent vendor
The must-have on every six sigma shelf.......2006-11-12
I have been using this book for the past few years and it continues to be the most valuable Six Sigma resource on my bookshelf. It is the most complete and practical Six Sigma book you will find, and worth every dollar. Every six sigma black belt I have worked with owns a copy of this book
This book is absolutely packed with useful examples - providing you with both the formulas to solve the Six Sigma tests, and also the solutions.
This is a manufacturing-centric six sigma book. If you are dedicated to service application of six sigma, I would recommend reading "Six Sigma for Transactions and Service."
If you are interested in learning about six sigma, or are a green-belt or a process improvement or enterprise modeler, this probably isn't the book for you. However if you are a black belt and apply six sigma methods on a consistent basis, this is a must-read ...
Implementing Six Sigma Review.......2006-02-28
I have read multiple books on Six Sigma, but "Implementing Six Sigma", is by far the most practical with a perfect balance of statistical concepts and everyday examples. Finally, there is a book that can show Executives, there is a better way, a true management system that links strategic objectives to bottom-line results. This book is a must for all Six Sigma practioners.
This is the only Six Sigma book you will need.......2006-02-26
This is the only Six Sigma book that covers all aspects of the methodology. You will not find another book that analyses every aspect of Six Sigma so deeply and yet, in a way that makes it so easy to understand.
As a professional of Six Sigma, I have been through every book about the subject that deserves attention but none of them comes anywhere close to Breygogle's "Implementing Six Sigma". Not only does the second edition cover the Lean methodology, but it also delves into the Theory OF Constraints and very clearly shows how it can be used for Six Sigma project selections.
No wonder why this book is the only one recommended by ASQ for their Six Sigma Black Belt preperation and no wonder why Breyfogle won the Crosby Medal.
Great book! I give it a 5 plus.

Best available primer on the subject.......2007-01-12
I'm not an engineer, but I've got a lot of telecom experience. The second edition of "SIP: Understanding the Session Initiation Protocol," delivers on the title. Engineers and programmers can look to the text as a good starting point, but will want to go the IETF for more serious stuff. Still, the text provides sample SIP messages and deconstructs SIP message flows. The non-technical reader can still understand the protocol and its uses, and make more informed business decisions (strategy, marketing, product management, finance or M&A). I evaluated all the other titles available from Amazon.com before purchasing and reading this one, and I am convinced this was the best selection available.
Very complete..........2007-01-09
Not a how to guide, but definitly a complete review of the SIP specification. It gives a complete description of the protocol to the point where you can actually implement the protocol.
This is reference book to keep (as opposed to some computer books that you can trash after a few years because they are no longer relevant).
This book will teach you enough about the SIP protocol so you will know how to position the protocol in your architecture, and start implementing!
good book.......2006-06-26
This book is very complet to understand SIP protocol. I found an answer for all my questions.
New second edition available.......2005-12-17
If you are currently viewing the page for the first edition, please note that there is a new second edition of this book available. You can find it by searching for 1580536557
if you're developing with SIP, you need this book.......2005-09-26
I'm a working developer that recently became engaged in a J2EE project where needed to design and build a SIP server for a call center requiring all manner of specialized behaviors. Needless to say I needed to learn all about the ins and outs of SIP as this system would be SIP VoIP based.
I started out trying to use the various RFCs related to the SIP and SDP protocols. Well, I could spend an entire review about how miserable it is to trudge through typical RFC documentation. Online hyperlinked documentation is indeed in some respects a miracle of our modern cyber information age. Yet it's not exactly perfect. In many respects I maintain that the traditional book remains solidly the highest technological invention that mankind has yet conceived - especially now that I can compare book form information vs. its online hyperlinked and searchable alternative.
When it comes to learning and having ready access to the relevant information I'd take a book, such as "SIP: Understanding the Session Initiation Protocol" hands down vs the RFCs. I was making slow and painful progress yet once I had this book in hand, I could quickly whip around in it and cross reference the material presented in it by flipping pages, look for things via by scanning the table of contents, or dereferencing the index. Finally I started to rapidly accelerate my endeavor.
Besides the mechanics of accessing the relevant information, this book was also solidly presented by the author. He indeed has a authoritative command of the subject matter. Many of the scenarios he presents of how SIP is deployed and used were directly relevant to my particular project. It was particularly important to see the full dialog of SIP/SDP protocol exchange and the diagrams that accompanied this were very helpful. Nice visual diagrams of this manner are not to be found in the bland RFC material.
I came to amazon.com and read up on all the reviews posted for this title. Several of them gave the book a low rating. I sensed that what these people were after was a more digestible higher level presentation of the subject matter. There is an O'Reilly title on VoIP that I think might serve some of these folks better in that regard. However, this book on SIP also does a fair job of presenting SIP in light of some of the other VoIP related standards, etc. It's just that the main thrust of this book is to convey the technical understanding of SIP so that one can program systems based on it.
So if one is a software developer and needs to learn the technical ins and outs of SIP then this books is definitely the one to get. It beats using the RFCs by themselves by many leagues.

Theoretical background for Operations Management - setting a new standard.......2006-10-03
This book provides you with the fundamental insights of manufacturing and assembly. Even though I do not like statistics to much, the book is written in a understandable manner and provides the fundamental knowledge to understand what is going on in manufacturing. Based on this knowledge, the flaw of MRP-systems are even explained as well as the basics of JIT/Lean. The book provides mainly the hardfacts of this science and for practical people, reading first Quick-Response-Manufacturing (from Rajan Suri) might be the easier way for many of us and gives you the motivation to take a deeper look later on - as provided by Factory Physics.
Factory Physics describes not only how to describe a single workstation and the interactions between many of them, than as well the great importance of variability reduction in a production line and how to analyse it. CONWIP-lines, as a mix of push-pull, are a central key in this book and a simple way to analyse the performance of any system is provided by the book. This book, together with Quick-Response-Manufacturing (this book includes important softfactores as well) have changed drastically my way of operational thinking and given me a sense, which system to apply (QRM or JIT/Lean) and why. The insight can even be used for services as well. One central point is the utilisation of a workstation and the knowledge, that the more you reduce variability in arrivals and processing, the higher the utilisation can be - still achieving low lead times. You will find as well important and simple laws helping you out in the daily business (Little's law and queueing theory).
As for JIT/Lean, lead time reduction can use the same japanese tools:
- SMED: setup-time reduction (lot sizes for reduction in lead time and WIP)
- TPM: productive maintenance (higher machine availability and decrease of variability)
- ZQC: fool-proof quality inspection for Zero defects (against capacity lost and to decrease variability)
All the books mentionned above, have a big advantage over traditional SCM-books: they provide you with a framework how to trim a single chain-element of the supply-chain and therefore how to built the whole supply chain. The operational strategy should be derived from the overall company strategy and with this new insights you can tailor a unique production system that fits your company's goals - or even give you an advantage over your competition. Anyway, it will not make obsolet the importance of having a sound and consistant overall business strategy (for your markets) first!
Enjoy reading, Best Regards
written with the heart of a teacher.......2006-03-13
Though the two authors are consultants, they are foremost - teachers. What is useful, and kind to a degree, is they put an effort to explain the numbers as pragmatic as possible. That idea made this book very accessible. To the industrial engineers or those who are involved (and passionate) in operations or in understanding systems - next to the Industrial Engineering Handboook, this should be in our library.
Exceptional enlightened and insightful!.......2006-02-18
I found this book to be very insightful. It helps to explain many of my own observations in my factory. The authors did an excellent job of explaining the key concepts using only average use of mathematics and in simple layman's terms. The readers will only need basic mathematics/beginner calculus, and basic statistics. Reading it was like discovering new ideas to implement in the factory to quickly realize efficiencies and cost savings. It was one of the best books I have laid eyes on in a very long time.
I highly recommend this book for every mfg and production engineers working in assembly or automation-driven factory. This book is not applicable to chemical processing, thus may not bring significant values to chemical or petroleum engineers.
Excellent and valuable book.......2005-12-23
This is the best course textbook I have had so far over about ten industrial engineering courses (and I have had some very good textbooks and courses). The book basically describes how to analyze and improve manufacturing operations through examining key areas that include: variability and its sources, push and pull systems, and supply chain management.
The authors approach is to present ideas in a very clear and relevant way. What I particularly like is that they do a great job putting things into perspective in a style that is highly readable. While there is some math involved if one wants to delve into the details that are in side notes, a basic understanding of calculus is more than sufficient. The authors are clearly very bright and, more importantly, are able to communicate very effectively and with a sense of humor.
This book can definitely be read on a stand-alone basis outside of a school environment. Many of the central ideas are very valuable.

Introduction to Airborne Radar 2nd Edition.......2007-06-03
Introduction to Airborne Radar is the revision of the classic book privately published by Hughes Aircraft Company in 1983. The first edition sold more than 40,000 copies. The second edition contains 13 entirely new chapters covering technological advances developed since the first publication. In addition, two chapters considered obsolete were deleted, three chapters were extensively rewritten, and two chapters were given new sections. This is the only text that completely covers the wide range of techniques employed in modern airborne and space-based radar. It fulfills the need of all those who want to learn about radar, regardless of their technical backgrounds. Lavishly produced in full color, the book contains over 1100 graphics. Virtually every concept is illustrated with a simple diagram that appears adjacent to the text it illustrates. Every illustration is accompanied by a concise caption, enabling it to stand on its own. Readers can quickly review a chapter's entire content simply by scanning the illustrations. Another feature of the book is marginal sidenotes that present exceptions, caveats, and other comments without detracting from the simplicity and clarity of the text. They are placed directly opposite the materials to which they apply. Blue panels give supplementary or more detailed explanation of the concepts presented. Readers can skip these notes on their first reading. A popular feature that brings the book to life is the inclusion of real-life examples of airborne radar, including military and civil applications, advanced radar techniques, battlefield surveillance and target acquisition, stealth technology, and more

I'm not a radar expert, but with this book I COULD BE!!!.......2006-03-26
Mr. Stimson's book, "Introduction to Airborne Radar (2nd Edition)," has been one of my most treasured purchases from my graduate school education. I expected a book filled with equations and bad graphs and tables - I was wonderfully surprised by the high quality graphics, easy to follow mathematical treatment, and historical views into past and present radar systems.
I recommend this text to anyone interested in radar - engineering students to laypersons wanting to know more. This book has special meaning to CSPs (Certified Space Professionals) that is not quite apparent - since radar is used heavily to track space vehicles, and space-based radar is a capability the U.S. military wants, it is common-sense that CSPs should know a bit more about radar than "It's very cool and works really well..."
The basics of radar covered is great, along with the different characteristcs (PRF, frequencies, etc.). Some areas may not seem applicable (two airborne targets moving towards each other) until the reader extends their imagination to the High Ground (a RV trying to be hit by a moving 'kill-vehicle'). More techincal radar textbooks exist, but Mr. Stimson's should have a place reserved on your shelf.
No other introduction needed.......2005-05-21
Stimson's second edition is a slight improvement over his first. "Slight" because improving near perfection remains a difficult task. Nowhere else is such clarity apparent in the complex field of radars. Thanks to Stimson this subject could be understood by my grandmother. If only Stimson would carry edition three to the next echelon, extending depth and detail to levels required to actually build and make a working, modern radar. Like applying his talent to the intricacies of adaptive processing, a completion of SAR computational demands and processes (vs. stopping at the digital filter FFT), nuances of ever more important phase noise, test, measurement and producibility of radar systems that shouldn't cost a million dollars per copy, but a fraction of this with proper processes and synergistic integration vs. the "Mister Potato Head" approach of slapping together the latest-greatest-of-every-subsystem-technology still practiced by engineers in just about everything. Unfortunately this may be our last version from Stimson as he's no longer a young man and such efforts are monumental. Even so, he's made himself a national asset creating this magnificent edition, probably lasting longer than any of us in the field today.
Not easy reading.......2004-04-25
I bought this book because I work with radar and would like to improve my understanding of it. This book is a good middle ground, but for a dummy like me, several chapters require re-reads. One of the most annoying things is that when the author describes related material, he doesn't compare and contrast as much as write one paragraph on the attributes of thing A and then another paragraph on thing B using all but two words that were used in the first paragraph. The reader must wade through this writing and then compare and contrast themself.
So, it's a good book and probably a great book if you have a better than average technical background, but it's not as easy as the first few pages (Amazon free preview) lead you to believe.
amazing book.......2004-01-27
This is a very good book. It is interesting to read although you are not an engineer in electrical or eletronics. Very informative. Recommended for all students who interested to study avionics.
Book Description
The third edition of Engineering Design represents a major reorganization and expansion. The revision has resulted from the recognition that engineering students need more structure to guide them through the design process. Chapters have been reordered to be more in the natural progression of the design process. The book is broader in content than most design texts, but now contains much more prescriptive guidance on how to carry out design.

The most practical chemical engineering book ever!!!!.......2007-05-02
If you are a working chemical or process engineer this book is great to check how equipments are really built. If you are a student or a professor, you may not found it very helpful. It shows you for real how equipments are design with several constructive details.
Overwhelming.......2006-11-10
Tons of information but nearly useless for the process design course that I am taking this semester. Avoid paying full price because it is like a big reference book
This is Not Perry's.......2005-04-16
The book starts out with some refinery flow sheets for making 'grasoline' from 'californing' crude. Process control is simple enough. The next section on fluid flow uses non-standard equations which are overly complex. The same goes for heat transfer. Fair does a good job on distillation. Reaction engineering is completly omited from this text.
The most practical chemical engineering reference book.......1997-09-22
For the working chemical process design engineer, this is the best reference I've come across. It tells you how to pick equipment and generally how to determine equipment sizes. As a design or procurement engineer you work with vendors to make final equipment selection, but this book gives you what you need to know before you start talking to the vendors. It bridges the gap between theory you can get from textbooks and detailed applications you can get from sales literature. I'm surprised this book hasn't caught on as a standard in the chemical engineering profession

Disappointed.......2007-04-13
I am about 2/3 the way through the book and am disappointed - not with the book, but with my schooling!
My profs were great and dedicated, but they didn't teach half the stuff in this book, not nearly enough real-world engineering. We came out of school without really knowing how to make a professional, working circuit design.
This great book will help the transition from school boy to engineer.
I highly recommend this book. Tim Williams explains real-world, critical circuit concerns in an easy to understand manner and backs it up with equations. For instance, did your profs ever explain what "ground bounce" really was, and if so did they emphasize how important it is to prevent and how?
The Circuit Designer's Companion is full of great advice and I hope to find more books by this author.
There's a peer reviewer on my bookshelf!.......2006-12-23
What a great set of proven best practices, design guidelines and engineering knowledge! It's like having a product designer at your side to identify the tough problems and show you how to get through them. I recommend it to electronic designers that have even a smidge of doubt in their grounding, protection, PCB design, circuit performance, power supply or any other electronic product concept. You can skim through the book and do a thorough review of your design. Plus, you will learn the "why" and "how" of circuit design, whether you are doing analog, digital or power electronics design.
Splendid resource!.......2006-12-04
I got this book a couple of weeks ago and I absolutely love it. It is very to the point, and has information that I have not seen anywhere else. This book would be great for anyone who is looking to bring their schematics to the real world and have them work. It is definitly not a "here's a schematic and here is what it does book". It assumes you have a decent, but not overwhelming understanding of electronics (I am a high school student if that tells you anything).
It is like a bunch of concepts that would come with years of electrical engineering experience crammed beautifully into 368 pages for you to read.
excellent book to start real-world circuit design.......2004-04-19
This book contains good amount of practical information and is clear and easy-reading. For people who are fresh out of college, this book bridges the textbook education with the real-world circuit design. Get it now to help you make your first job easier.
Must have reference for everyone..........2000-04-14
Everywhere I have worked I've made sure we have lots of copies of this on hand... Many of them walk away because it's such a good reference. If you ever need to design or build a product or just a fun project and have it work, start from here. Everything you won't learn in school, and industry just calls "experience". Combine this with High Speed Digital Design: A Handbook of Black Magic and you have an extremely powerful combination of references, covering all the details you need to know. Very highly recommended.

Need formulas in the middle of the night.......2000-04-11
Norton Lapeyrouse has done a good job accumulating those hard to formulas that you need in the middle of the night. We have all been on location and needed to calculate some aspect in drilling of a well and can't remember the exact formula. Well this book has just about everything you want. It ranks up there with Service Company's Tech Facts books and a more.
