Book Description
This volume presents a systematic study of the global behaviour of solutions of nonlinear scalar difference equations of order greater than one. Of particular interest are aspects such as global asymptotic stability, periodicity, permanence and persistence, and also semicycles of solutions. As well as exposing the reader to the very frontiers of the subject, important open problems are also formulated.
The book has six chapters. Chapter 1 presents an introduction to the subject and deals with preliminaries. Chapter 2 considers global stability results. Chapter 3 is devoted to rational recursive structures. Chapter 4 describes various applications. The topic of Chapter 5 is periodic cycles, and Chapter 6 discusses a number of open problems and conjectures involving interesting types of difference equations. Each chapter includes notes and references. The volume concludes with three appendices, a comprehensive bibliography, and name and subject indices.
For graduate students and researchers whose work involves difference and differential equations.

Book Description
This monograph aims at promoting original mathematical methods to determine the invariant measure of two-dimensional random walks in domains with boundaries. Such processes are of interest in several areas of mathematical research and are encountered in pure probabilistic problems, as well as in applications involving queuing theory. Using Riemann surfaces and boundary value problems, the authors propose completely new approaches to solve functional equations of two complex variables. These methods can also be employed to characterize the transient behavior of random walks in the quarter plane.

Book Description
For the first time in book form, Analytical Methods for Markov Semigroups provides a comprehensive analysis on Markov semigroups both in spaces of bounded and continuous functions as well as in Lp spaces relevant to the invariant measure of the semigroup. Exploring specific techniques and results, the book collects and updates the literature associated with Markov semigroups. Divided into four parts, the book begins with the general properties of the semigroup in spaces of continuous functions: the existence of solutions to the elliptic and to the parabolic equation, uniqueness properties and counterexamples to uniqueness, and the definition and properties of the weak generator. It also examines properties of the Markov process and the connection with the uniqueness of the solutions. In the second part, the authors consider the replacement of RN with an open and unbounded domain of RN. They also discuss homogeneous Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions associated with the operator A. The final chapters analyze degenerate elliptic operators A and offer solutions to the problem. Using analytical methods, this book presents past and present results of Markov semigroups, making it suitable for applications in science, engineering, and economics.
Book Description
Sobolev Spaces presents an introduction to the theory of Sobolev Spaces and other related spaces of function, also to the imbedding characteristics of these spaces. This theory is widely used in pure and Applied Mathematics and in the Physical Sciences.
This second edition of Adam's 'classic' reference text contains many additions and much modernizing and refining of material. The basic premise of the book remains unchanged:
Sobolev Spaces is intended to provide a solid foundation in these spaces for graduate students and researchers alike.
* Self-contained and accessible for readers in other disciplines.
* Written at elementary level making it accessible to graduate students.

The creation of an ethos.......2005-09-18
A comprehensive exposition of the Sobolev creation: the ethos of the solutions for differential equations. Ethos means dwelling, but much more than abode it means a way of being. The Sobolev spaces are the whole being of the solutions, the way they are. The way they look like.
Adams and Fournier present that ethos with detail. All important and essential properties are studied rigorously and exhaustively. Those dwellings have the convenient property of being complete. This means that they are Euclidean extensions without gaps; they are continuous extensions, no holes, no hiatus. One cannot gain everything, there is always something missing. The lack of the ethos created by Sobolev is huge: the metric limitation does not guarantee scarceness of extension. This is a major problem we have to deal with. A new concept of proximity has to be invented. Also, it is very important to enable reification since a solution living in the Sobolev ethos has to be a vintage solution.
The book is indispensable for graduate student and researcher that wish to struggle along the road of the non-linear differential equations.
An invaluable resource.......2003-08-19
As a PhD student in mathematics focusing on theoretical PDE, I find this monograph to be one of the most useful in my collect. The book is self contained and very easy to read, requiring only a background in real analysis at the beginning graduate/senior undergrad level. This text covers a wide range of topics from the basics of topological vector spaces, all the way through interpolation methods and Besov spaces, but maintains a deep enough level so that most researchers will find this book to be very useful as a reference for the subject. In particular, I really like the completeness by which the imbedding theorems in the book are stated and proved. In addition to the content, the book is also beautifully bound and is printed on very high quality paper.
very interesting.......2003-07-18
A very interesting textbook for people interested in functional analysis. It provides a great introduction for beginners but also clear and rigorous demonstrations of more technical points.
highly recommended.......2003-07-14
I highly recommend this book. It is a valuable reference and a great introduction to sobolev spaces for people interested in functional analysis.

Book Description
Since the 1960s, many researchers have extended topological degree theory to various non-compact type nonlinear mappings, and it has become a valuable tool in nonlinear analysis. Presenting a survey of advances made in generalizations of degree theory during the past decade, this book focuses on topological degree theory in normed spaces and its applications. The authors begin by introducing the Brouwer degree theory in Rn, then consider the Leray-Schauder degree for compact mappings in normed spaces. Next, they explore the degree theory for condensing mappings, including applications to ODEs in Banach spaces. This is followed by a study of degree theory for A-proper mappings and its applications to semilinear operator equations with Fredholm mappings and periodic boundary value problems. The focus then turns to construction of Mawhin's coincidence degree for L-compact mappings, followed by a presentation of a degree theory for mappings of class (S+) and its perturbations with other monotone-type mappings. The final chapter studies the fixed point index theory in a cone of a Banach space and presents a notable new fixed point index for countably condensing maps. Examples and exercises complement each chapter. With its blend of old and new techniques, Topological Degree Theory and Applications forms an outstanding text for self-study or special topics courses and a valuable reference for anyone working in differential equations, analysis, or topology.
Book Description
Partial differential equations and variational methods were introduced into image processing about 15 years ago, and intensive research has been carried out since then. The main goal of this work is to present the variety of image analysis applications and the precise mathematics involved. It is intended for two audiences. The first is the mathematical community, to show the contribution of mathematics to this domain and to highlight some unresolved theoretical questions. The second is the computer vision community, to present a clear, self-contained, and global overview of the mathematics involved in image processing problems. This book will be useful to researchers and graduate students in mathematics and computer vision.

It is my bible!.......2004-07-01
This book not only includes the state-of-art image processig techniques using math methods, but also provides very good numerical schemes for these methods. This book is written by mathematicians, but engineers still can easily implemente many commonly used image processing algorithm, just follow the detailed numerical difference schemes provided in the appendix.

Customer Reviews:
new chap 19 on numerical inverse laplace transforms.......2006-11-03
Chapter 19 is an excellent modern review of the main numerical inverse Laplace transform methods in use today. It does a good job of tying together many of the methods into a unifying theoretical light. Pretty much the only modern review out there, it was written by Dr John Knight, who is a co-author of one of the more important numerical inverse methods (Fourier series method of de Hoog, Knight & Stokes).
The rest of the book is great too.
Great Introduction.......2000-08-04
This well written book teaches by example and will quickly make you proficient in the subject. Davies uses complex analysis to approach the subject which provides a way to visualize the problems.

Book Description
A superb text on the fundamentals of Lebesgue measure and integration.
This book is designed to give the reader a solid understanding of Lebesgue measure and integration. It focuses on only the most fundamental concepts, namely Lebesgue measure for R and Lebesgue integration for extended real-valued functions on R. Starting with a thorough presentation of the preliminary concepts of undergraduate analysis, this book covers all the important topics, including measure theory, measurable functions, and integration. It offers an abundance of support materials, including helpful illustrations, examples, and problems. To further enhance the learning experience, the author provides a historical context that traces the struggle to define "area" and "area under a curve" that led eventually to Lebesgue measure and integration.
Lebesgue Measure and Integration is the ideal text for an advanced undergraduate analysis course or for a first-year graduate course in mathematics, statistics, probability, and other applied areas. It will also serve well as a supplement to courses in advanced measure theory and integration and as an invaluable reference long after course work has been completed.

Ordinary Differential Equations
ASIN: 0387940766 |
Book Description
The present book builds upon the earlier work of J. Hale, "Theory of Functional Differential Equations" published in 1977. The authors have attempted to maintain the spirit of that book and have retained approximately one-third of the material intact. One major change was a completely new presentation of linear systems (Chapter 6-9) for retarded and neutral functional differential equations. The theory of dissipative systems (Chapter 4) and global attractors was thoroughly revamped as well as the invariant manifold theory (Chapter 10) near equilibrium points and periodic orbits. A more complete theory of neutral equations is presented (Chapters 1,2,3,9,10). Chapter 12 is also entirely new and contains a guide to active topics of research. In the sections on supplementary remarks, the authors have included many references to recent literature, but, of course, not nearly all, because the subject is so extensive.
Customer Reviews:
Deprecated and old.......2005-12-04
This is a satisfactory treatment of the theory of functional differential equations. Many of the chapters are not written with students in mind so I could only partially recommend this work to professors of mathematics.
