Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

An easy call.......2003-07-23
Very simply: if you want to know a very great deal about topos theory, buy this book. I mean, seriously, if you plan to make real work on topos theory a part of your life, then grit your teeth and come up with the money. If you do not want to know a very great deal about it, do not buy this book. You can use it at the library as a reference.
If you merely want a professional understanding of what topos theory is, then read Johnstone's earlier TOPOS THEORY. That far shorter book gives a better overview. My Amazon review of it discusses others on the subject. Most are more accessible than Johnstone's books and go more into particular aspects of the theory.
This book is a reference on all the methods, and the latest results, in topos theory. If you want the definition of "split opfibration", it is here, along with some 80 pages of background, examples, and motivation. Johnstone does an heroic job of unifying the terminology and organizing the theorems.
More than that, Johnstone has written down an expert, encyclopedic view of the subject today. It is rare for a top mathematical researcher to give so deep an account of their field. It is rare for anyone to even work out such an explicit, coherent, extensive account of the whole. Not everyone will agree with his view. Some would like to see much less of such logical topics as "allegories", others would like to see the logic more formalized from the start. But Johnstone builds a case for his choices: partly implicit in his success at explaining things this way, and partly by explicit reasons.
If you want to know that much about the subject then you want to immerse yourself in this book.

Ordered structures have been increasingly recognized in recent years due to an explosion of interest in theoretical computer science and all areas of discrete mathematics. This book covers areas such as ordered sets and lattices. A key feature of ordered sets, one which is emphasized in the text, is that they can be represented pictorially. Lattices are also considered as algebraic structures and hence a purely algebraic study is used to reinforce the ideas of homomorphisms and of ideals encountered in group theory and ring theory. Exposure to elementary abstract algebra and the rotation of set theory are the only prerequisites for this text. For the new edition, much has been rewritten or expanded and new exercises have been added.

Lattice Theory Uber Alles?Begin here.......2005-03-27
A set with, at minimum, one binary operation is a groupoid. If a situation involves an equivalence relation or some sort of symmetry, some sort of groupoid applies. If the set has, at minimum, two binary operations, and one operation distributes over the other, you have a ringoid. Ringoids, which include the real field we all use every day, tell us much about number systems.
Let there be a groupoid. Denote its single binary operation by concatenation. Let that operation commute and associate. So far, we have a commutative semigroup. Now add idempotency, so that AA=A. With that seemingly trivial axiom we turn a corner, farewell the groupoids, and find ourselves among the semilattices.
Now let there be two binary operations, + and *, that commute and associate. Moreover, assume that A*(A+B) = A = A+(A*B). A*A=A=A+A is now an easy theorem. What you now have is a lattice, of which the best known example is Boolean algebra (which requires added axioms). More generally, most logics can be seen as interpretations of bounded lattices. Given any relation of partial or total order, the corresponding algebra is lattice theory. Nevertheless, far fewer mathematicians specialize in lattices than in groupoids and ringoids.
Davey and Priestley has become the classic introduction to lattice theory in our time. Sad to say, it has little competition. It is a bit harder than I would prefer, and the authors do not say enough about the value of lattice theory for nonclassical logic. Their book is a classic nonetheless, and here's hoping that Gian Carlo Rota was right when he said that the 21st century shall be the century of lattices triumphant.
Lattice theory is largely due to the work of the American Garrett Birkhoff, writing in the 1930s. He gets my vote for the
greatest American mathematician of all time.
Excellent introduction and something more.......2000-03-29
This book presents an excellent introduction to the subject, but also goes beyond that, presenting with a fair amount of the detail the theory of Priestley representation. The excercises start at the basic level of checking the understanding of definitions, allowing the reader to build confidence out of the practice. The fact that Priestley herself co-authored it is definitely a plus.

adjoints; monads. An extra topic of cartesian closed categories and the lambda-calculus is also provided; a must for computer scientists, logicians and linguists!

It's the glue........2006-11-19
Several years ago I came across an on-line .pdf format of Awodey's manuscript while trying to find a text on Category Theory whose content was not as intense as Mac Lane's `Categories for the Working Mathematician' and it is wonderful to see this book come to fruition. Without a doubt it is true that the available array of Category theoretic texts for mathematicians has been confined to the more abstract texts whose readership is limited to those individuals who are either researching topics integral to Category theory or graduate students of, say Algebraic Topology/Geometry, who utilize Categorical constructs and processes within the confines of their respective fields.
So where does this text fit in? I believe this text can be quantified as "the glue" between Category theoretic texts written for non-mathematicians and the hardcore texts of Mac Lane, Herrlich or Ademek et al.
What features set this text apart from the others? Simple, it is focused. Let me preface my explanation with the following: I firmly believe in the importance of demonstrating or motivating any given subject through the use of concrete examples and, in particular, through the use of several examples that can be built upon throughout the text. Awodey sees the importance of this and focuses on illuminating the abstractness of Category theory by carefully building on or utilizing Monoids and Posets. Such structures may readily seem un-familiar to some readers but, if they pause long enough to compare what they know with the basic axioms for a given set to be a Monoid/Poset, then they will see that the majority of structures in which they have been working are, in fact, specialized Monoids/Posets. Take for example Groups. Any set possessing an associative binary law of composition all of whose objects satisfy the 3-axioms for a group also trivially satisfy the axioms for a Monoid. This is not to say that Awodey has chosen two basic blocks from which all examples are derived, instead, he motivates each topic with a vast assortment of the standard examples taken from a diverse set of available fields.
So who should read this text? Anyone who wants to learn Category Theory from the ground up but lacks the standard assumed breadth of knowledge, namely, familiarity with Topology, in particular Algebraic Topology, as well as advanced abstract Algebra (inclusive of Module theory). As in any case of defining the readership one would state that their text is readable by the illusive and readily undefined "mathematically mature" student. Personally I would assume that you know how construct logically sound proofs and that you have taken courses in set theory (never given in America) as well as Algebra at the level of, say Hungerford's undergraduate text. Furthermore, and as is the case with anything mathematical, you must be willing to suffer through abstractness and be diligent as well as disciplined enough to work through the exercises. With respect to this last point, Awodey does a remarkable job providing a well thought out set of exercises ranging from simple applications of the material to more advanced exercises that will cause you to pull out your hair and possibly throw the book across the room in sheer agony.
As a final note regarding the overall text, I would even suggest this Awodey's book to more advanced student who lack a firm understanding of Category Theory but who have already suffered through someone else's text. Why? Simple, because Awodey's text will help you `see' and hence understand, at the necessary level, Category Theory. After all, one can not become proficient in anything unless they `see' what it is they are trying to become proficient in.
Finally, I would like to personally thank Mr. Awodey for writing this text and for doing such a remarkable job introducing and motivating a miraculous and awe-inspiring subject. Enjoy!

Discrete mathematics, or the study of finite systems, has become increasingly important for students of computer science, and this book is a good foundational text on the subject. This Schaum's outline is much more complete than the average Schaum's, and it is also very clear and instructive. It is not just a good text for discrete mathematics. It also covers the basics of abstract algebra and the basics of the theory of computation.
The first 3 chapters cover sets, relations, functions, and algorithms, including a very good section on the complexity of algorithms. Chapter 4 is on logic and propositional calculus, which is the foundation of artificial intelligence and digital logic. The next three chapters cover the basics of vectors, matrices, counting (permutations and combinations), and probability theory. This material is important in the design and analysis of operating systems. Next are chapters on graph theory, directed graphs, and binary trees, all of which should be covered in any good course on the analysis of algorithms. These chapters include discussions of planarity, traversibility, minimal paths, and Warshall's and Huffman's algorithms. There is a chapter on languages and machines that includes material on regular expressions, automata, Turing machines, and computable functions. There is also a chapter dedicated to the very basics of abstract algebra, and another chapter on boolean algebra.
This text is therefore a superset of what you will probably find in an upper level undergraduate class in discrete mathematics, and is definitely a book you want to keep around especially if you are a computer science student and need additional study material for your core courses of artificial intelligence, analysis of algorithms, operating systems, and theory of computation. Highly recommended.

This is a very helpful outline whether you are taking the class and need a supplement or are just trying to learn the material on your own. The writing is clear and succinct, and there are hundreds and hundreds of practice problems all of which are answered. The topics covered are standard for the topic, so this book will cover everything in your class unless your teacher has some unorthodox lesson plan. My one caveat is that there are occasional errors in the answer keys. This can be frustrating especially if you don't feel confident in your own work. The errors are far and few between for the most part and if you can live with them then you will get much use out of this book. Highly recommended.

After all, an abstract course in discrete structures which is supposed to be the fundamentals of learning computer hardware and software programming need not be made even more confusing. Grab this book and make learning discrete structures more enjoyable and less painful !

I waited several weeks for this book to arrive, and was disappointed to see that its 'just another maths book', nothing special. I didn't find this book any easier to understand than any other maths book, I ended up refering to my other book more.

The use of this book depends entirely on how you define discrete math. The discrete math course I was hoping this book would supplement included just about even thirds combinatorics, number theory and graph theory. The combinatorics is adequate. There was hardly any number theory. The Graph theory was quite extensive and very helpful in my opinion. This book also goes into some algebra, (groups, etc.), which is of course very exciting, but I had little use for it at this time.

I recently purchased this book for a discrete math class I was attending at UMD. This was no help in practicing iteration, induction, or summation. The only good point about this book is that it gives plenty of examples for visuals (i.e. set theory, graphs, and trees).

Computer science has been the primary catalyst transforming the status of this once-obscure field of discrete mathematics into state-of-the-art information, and required knowledge. Switching circuits, programming languages, expert systems and their underlying logic, to name but a few computer-related topics, each rely upon the results from this field as a foundation. There is a proliferation of books on graph theory, discrete mathematics, and even set theory and mathematical logic, for this reason.
A paucity exists, however, of texts facilitating a newcomer in verifying the lessons presumably learned through formal education or through self-study. Schaum's solved problems books are invaluable for this purpose. The more recent n'000 solved problem books are beneficial to any willing to invest the effort and time required to attempt the numerous problems posed.
The discrete mathematics book reviews subjects ranging from fundamentals of logic and set theory, to lattices, combinatorics, as well as abstract algebra and the basics of the theory of languages. There are a variety of questions, from recalling definitions, to number-crunching, to providing sketches or fragments of proofs. These are typically in a progressive problem-solving form, which lends itself to becoming a programed course. The book easily and quietly supplements any standard, classic, or assigned works from the field.
Gradually the questions in this work will be perceived as increasingly basic, perhaps some sections too basic now - however that is only because the book has served its purpose, as a foundation for other more practical, detailed, or complex assignments or problems.
While reading through other works in this field, make note and observe how most have numerous exercises suffixed to each chapter, and yet how few actually provide comprehensible solutions to them. The true value of Schaum's series of solved problems books then becomes more evident.

The problems in this book were arranged the way that leads readers understand simple concepts first, then bring you to problems and applications. In addtion, my professor Dr. Mott (he wrote one of the top selling discrete book) recommanded this book to me as well. I found it VERY helpful.
Yes, I think it servers as an aid to textbooks. You cannot teach yourself discrete math by reading it.
By the way, it doesn't have alot Hamiltionian cycle examples in there.

The easiest refresher of introductory algebra I've ever seen. No cold-turkey review of numerous rules, this! Geek Logic introduces a mnemonic indicationg the order of arithmatic functions, then the fun begins--readers assign numerical values to formulae and calculate personal answers to hilarious life quandries. It's so entertaining, I forgot I was "studying." I hope the sequel delves into more advanced algebraic functions.

As a high school (and later college) student, I always struggled with the utility of algebra, asking the ages old question, "When am I going to use this stuff in life?" Sundem's _Geek Logik_ finally answers that question with 50 equations that provide a mathematical answer to such burning real-life questions as "Should I get a tatoo?" or "Am I over qualified for my job?" The answers may surprise you. Certainly its not the sort of book one takes too seriously, but the process of crunching through the formulae is both entertaining and (to me) fascinating to see how the equations were put together.

Physics is a demanding subject and the problems can be overwhelming... With Physics as a Second Language, I was able to understand concepts as well as how to solve the problems by breaking them down into easier to solve components! I have been using this book for the spring semester and i was just amazed by how easy physics was. It served as an instructor when i got home, the book does not just give you how the solution to a similar problem but it also outlines on how to approach any general problem in that category. i.e. it lays down the thought process, which i believe is critical in solving the physics problems. It was amazing that i was able to average an A in the class, thank to this book.

I took an intro physics course, and this book was offered as the secondary text. Our main textbook was worthless, and this one was very helpful. It is full of example problems. Its focus is examples, not theory, so if you're the type of learner who needs to see how a problem is done to understand it, this book is perfect for you! This book presents a step-by-step development of a rigorous framework for the specification and verification of concurrent systems. Petri Net Algebra takes its inspiration and methods from Process Algebra and Petri Nets, two prominent branches of concurrency theory. Added synergistic benefit is derived from combining their respective advantages.
Petri nets are treated as composable objects, and as such they are embedded in a general process algebra. On the other hand, a generic process algebra is given an automatic Petri net semantics so that net-based verification techniques, based on structural invariants and causal partial orders, can be applied to the process algebra.
The book contains full proofs, carefully chosen examples and several possible directions for further research. A unique aspect is that the development of the Petri net algebra is handled so as to allow for further application-oriented extensions and modifications.

Despite its uniqueness,
Calcolo Geometrico has been strangely neglected by historians of mathematics, and even by scholars of Peano. The book has never been reprinted in its entirety, and only two chapters have ever been translated into English. In part, this neglect has been due to Peano's organization of the work. That is, the section on mathematical logic bears almost no relation to the rest of the book, and the material there was superseded only a year after its publication by Peano's second book. Since all but this first section was generally thought to be expository rather than original work, it was regarded lightly, if noticed at all, and ultimately all but forgotten. Only in very recent years have the book's unique merits begun to be recognized.
Readers of this valuable translation will gain insight into the work of a distinguished mathematician and founder of mathematical logic.
