Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

A very useful book that gathers all the mathmatical formals 'as the title states. As an Engineering Student it is very helpful to have everything in one text instead of getting your old books and digging through them to find them.

As a tabular summary of many useful mathematical relations, the book is very job-specific; however, it contains most of the functions and functional relations that a scientist or engineer might need. The layout is clean and very well organized. It's a useful reference, but does not actually derive anything, so if one is looking for derivations, then try looking at applied mathematics textbooks.

Classic text. Good encyclopedic source of mathematics - pure & applied. Definitely not a picture book and takes a bit of digging to find what one needs. Typical abbreviated index found in British texts of that era.

Excellent for reference and technique. Don't expect calculus on manifolds or forms. But work the "old school" problems and the payoff will be tremendous" For those who want to a more modern (geometric) supplement Spivak is good and there is a book called Visual Complex Analysis that is by Needham (spelling?) that is quite good.

If I could, I would give this book ten stars. When I first sat down to read it, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. This is the only book I have ever seen on complex analysis (or any scientific field for that matter) in which the authors cover so much material (everything from residues to integral equations to elliptic functions and MUCH more) and yet manage to make the whole text fit into a framework which is relatively easy to follow, even for someone completely new to complex analysis. Moreover, the majority of the many hundreds of excercizes in this book range from moderately to nail-bitingly hard, and encourage a true understanding of the material being covered. I would reccommend this book for ANYONE who has mastered basic calculus and analysis and wishes to begin learning complex analysis and the theory of special functions. The book's coverage of the following topics is especially noteworthy: The gamma function (the book uses the INFINITE PRODUCT as the basic definition), the hypergeometric function (and the confluent hypergeometric function), bessel functions (a field in which G.N. Watson was a leading expert), and the Weirstrassian and Jacobean elliptic functions and theta functions (I LOVED the intuitive development of the theory of the elliptic functions, which is made to parrallel that of the trigonometric functions, which are of course familiar to the reader). I would ESPECIALLY recommend this book for those pursuing SELF-STUDY (although it is NOT for the mathematically weak-of-heart, but no book on the topic is), as it is quite self-contained and readable for a book on complex analysisis. Once you buy it, you won't even think to complain about the high pricetag, because you will be way too absorbed in the math to think about anything else.

Neville Watson's mother was Mary Justina Griffith, the daughter of the rector of Ardley in Oxfordshire. Neville's father was George Wentworth Watson who was a schoolmaster, but is more famous for his work as a genealogist. He played a large role in the publication of The Complete Peerage, a 13-volume database of the British peerage, generally accepted as the greatest British achievement in the field of genealogy. The first edition was published in London between 1887 and 1898. George and Mary Watson had two children, a boy and a girl, the eldest being Neville.
Neville was educated at St Paul's School in London where he was very fortunate to have the outstanding teacher of mathematics Francis Macaulay. He mixed with equally outstanding pupils, for Littlewood, less than a year older than Watson, was also a pupil at the school. Having won a scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge, Watson matriculated there in 1904. At this time there were three young fellows of Trinity all of whom had a major influence on Watson's mathematics. They were Whittaker, Barnes, and Hardy. Perhaps the one from this trio who had the greatest influence on him was Whittaker, despite the fact that he left Cambridge in 1906, two years after Watson began his studies there.
Watson graduated as Senior Wrangler in 1907 (meaning that he was ranked in first position among those who were awarded First Class degrees), completing the Mathematical Tripos in the following year in the second division of the First Class. He won a prestigious Smith's Prize in 1909, becoming a Fellow of Trinity College in 1910. This was particularly pleasing to him for he had a great love of his College, and throughout his life he collected prints of the College and of previous Fellows.
After election to his Trinity fellowship, Watson spent four further years in Cambridge before leaving to take up an assistant lectureship in University College, London. From 1918 to 1951 he was Mason Professor of Pure Mathematics at Birmingham. He married Elfrida Gwenfil Lane, the daughter of a farmer from Holbeach in Lincolnshire, in 1925. They had one son.
Watson worked on a wide variety of topics, all within the area of complex variable theory, such as difference equations, differential equations, number theory and special functions. He is best known as a joint author with Whittaker of A Course of Modern Analysis published in 1915. The first edition of the book has only Whittaker as an author. In 1922 Watson published The theory of Bessel functions which was another masterpiece. Titchmarsh wrote of Watson's books (see for example [2]):-
Here one felt was mathematics really happening before one's eyes. ... the older mathematical books were full of mystery and wonder. With Professor Watson we reached the period when the mystery is dispelled though the wonder remains.
One piece of work undertaken by Watson deserves special mention. It involves the problem of wireless waves, which were quickly found to travel long distances despite the fact that theoretically they should not have been able to follow the curvature of the Earth. A mathematical model had been constructed where the Earth was represented by a partially conducting sphere surrounded by an infinite dielectric. Such a model had been used by Macdonald, Rayleigh, Poincaré, Sommerfeld and others. Although Watson was not interested in how best to model the situation, he was, however, very interested in using his expertise to determine mathematical solutions to the given model which others might then check against observations. He obtained solutions to the problem in 1918 which showed conclusively that the model was not a satisfactory one.
In 1902 Heaviside had predicted that there was an conducting layer in the atmosphere which allowed radio waves to follow the Earth's curvature. This layer in the atmosphere, now called the Heaviside layer, was only a conjecture in 1918 but it was suggested to Watson that, having shown the previous model to be wrong, he now look at the model resulting from the postulated Heaviside layer. Watson showed that if the layer was about 100 km above the Earth's surface and it had a certain conductivity, then indeed the solutions obtained closely matched observations. That Heaviside, and Watson, were correct was confirmed in 1923 when the existence of the layer was proved experimentally when radio pulses were transmitted vertically upward and the returning pulses from the reflecting layer were received.
Watson undertook a major project by examining in detail Ramanujan's notebooks, extending his results and supplying proofs. In fact he wrote twenty-five papers relating to results in Ramanujan's notebooks, and he spent many hours making a hand written copy in wonderful script of all the notebooks. He enjoyed numerical calculations and spent many happy hours doing numerical work on his calculating machine.
He was elected to the Royal Society of London in 1919. In 1946 he received the Sylvester Medal of the Royal Society:-
... in recognition of his distinguished contributions to pure mathematics in the field of mathematical analysis and in particular for his work on asymptotic expansion and on general transforms.
Watson was also very active in his support for the London Mathematical Society. He served as secretary from 1919 to 1933, president from 1933 to 1935 and acted as an editor of the Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society until 1946. The Society awarded him their De Morgan Medal in 1947. The Royal Society of Edinburgh elected him to an honorary fellowship.
We find a little of Watson's personality described in [2]:-
He was the university's expert on the timetable; students with unusual combinations of subjects usually had to be referred to him for advice, and for many years after his retirement the dates of the academic year were governed by the "Watsonian cycle". ... He took great trouble with the style of his letters and his conversation and enjoyed finding a pungent phrase to express his points of view or his criticism ... he made no secret of his aversion to cars, telephones, and fountain pens. He loved trains - whose timetables were as familiar to him as those of the university lectures - and unusual stamps.

This is a great book. The mathematical exposition is excellent and the historical footnotes are extremely interesting.
A classic text in theoretical probability.......2005-01-28
First of all I should say that this book was written for those interested in the foudations of probability theory (the same is also true for Prof. Kallenberg's book). Therefore beginners learning real analysis and probability for the first time and those looking for applications should look elsewhere to find out appropriate books (instead of underrating such an important text like Prof. Dudley's book).
The second point to be emphasized is that this book fills in an important gap in probability literature as it reveals numerous links between this branch of mathematics and other areas of pure mathematics such as topology, functional analysis and, of course, measure and integration theory, while most books on advanced probability develop barely the latter connection, which is plainly insufficient for (future) researches on probability theory.
Finally, despite the complaint of some reviewers, the book is extremely well written and amazingly comprehensive. The sole prerequisite to reading it is a certain amount of "mathematical maturity" which perhaps these reviewers lack.

This is absolutely a classic book on real analysis and probability, although it is a little hard to read. Highly recommend to people working in machine learning and/or pattern recognition, since it provides almost all mathematical foundations needed to do deep research in these two fields, for example, on statistical learning theory.

This is one of the best textbooks on real analysis and probability (at the graduate level). You will need a solid undergraduate course in analysis before being able to read this one. In any case, the exposition is quite elegant and clear. All the major theorems are proved. Also provides good exercises ranging from routine to quite challanging. The first half of the book presents the elements of advanced real analysis and topology (including the essentials of functional analysis); the second half presents probability theory (including martingales and stochastic processes). Very comprehensive.

Very good intro textbook. It gives short, detailed preps to various coding areas (linear, cyclic, convolutional). The biggest advantage this book has is that it does not throw at You tonnes of unnecessary info (like many other thick books do). That is, it assumes reader has some basic understanding of algebra and probability theory. Let's say, it gives good theoretical presentation such that the reader gets good theoretical understanding, it is not example-based.

Well, what can I say. I enjoyed this book much more than I normally enjoy mathematics books, and I do have a healthy liking for mathematics.
I believe this is Professor Lewin's life's work, and it shows. Mathematical analysis is not an easy subject, and Lewin has made a genuine effort to make this subject accessible to all students. That is not to say this book is "for idiots/dummies," but for the intelligent mathematical analysis neophyte looking for a book to ease him into higher mathematics. The writing style is informal and straight to the point.
So what can you expect to learn from this book? If you don't know what mathematical analysis is at all, you'll read about that too (as well as the subject matter itself!) The examples and problems are wonderful. They are at just the right level for an engaging introduction that will give you a place to stand to take further courses. You can understand and enjoy this book with a modest mathematical background (high school only, and not necessarily any calculus courses!) and average grades. You will need to go slowly and think, but Lewin masterfully guides you through.
This book is a welcome change from enormous encyclopedic works that present page after page of mind-bending symbols and leave it as an exercise for the reader to figure out what it all means. The authors of these wretched books think a quick paragraph is just fine. I disagree, and so does Lewin. This book is a pleasure to *read*, and you will learn about mathematical analysis, too! This book can serve as a good introduction to higher mathematics as well as calculus. Lewin provides early instruction in the "vocabulary of mathematics" and proofs before getting into the subject matter of the book.
Lewin makes mathematical analysis accessible for everyone, even those with a modest mathematical background, and even makes it a pleasure.
Many examples with a bit too much talk.......2003-07-01
This is actually an excellent text as a supplement for students of advanced calculus. There are many simplified examples and a lot of explaination, perhaps too much. The author starts with logic, which is good since most students have difficulty with understanding the contrapositive, converse, and proof by contradiction. He gives a lot of information on the subjects that are covered (there are a good number of subjects not covered) and talks (perhaps rambles) a lot on these subjects. However if you could dig through the jargon and appreciate a bunch of nice examples and fundamentals this is a book for you. I didn't look at the CD.

One of the authors' stated goals for this publication is to "modernize" the course through the integration of Mathematica. Besides introducing students to the multivariable uses of Mathematica, and instructing them on how to use it as a tool in simplifying calculations, they also present intoductions to geometry, mathematical physics, and kinematics, topics of particular interest to engineering and physical science students. In using Mathematica as a tool, the authors take pains not to use it simply to define things as a whole bunch of new "gadgets" streamlined to the taste of the authors, but rather they exploit the tremendous resources built into the program. They also make it clear that Mathematica is not algorithms. At the same time, they clearly see the ways in which Mathematica can make things cleaner, clearer and simpler. The problem sets give students an opportunity to practice their newly learned skills, covering simple calculations with Mathematica, simple plots, a review of one-variable calculus using Mathematica for symbolic differentiation, integration and numberical integration. They also cover the practice of incorporating text and headings into a Mathematica notebook. A DOS-formatted diskette accompanies the printed work, containing both Mathematica 2.2 and 3.0 version notebooks, as well as sample examination problems for students. This supplementary work can be used with any standard multivariable calculus textbook. It is assumed that in most cases students will also have access to an introductory primer for Mathematica.

Look inside the book! This book has a table of content, with only 5 entries. You you want to look up a thema to repeat it, or to learn a special thing you are interested in, you have to read 50 pages. This is realy stupid!
Accessible book gets to the heart of analysis.......2005-12-18
Bryant's book on analysis is a great illustration of what a textbook should be. He takes what many upper level college mathematics students consider to be the most tedious and boring topic - analysis- and presents it in a clear, interesting and effective way. Calculus at the college undergraduate level is usually taught in 3 semester long classes where integrals and derivatives are seen as tools for finding areas under curves, or volumes of objects, etc. which is the way engineers are made to view Calculus during their scholastic careers. Past that introductory level, in their junior years students of pure mathematics must be reintroduced to Calculus in a rigorous proof-driven way - thus enters the dreaded subject of "analysis", also sometimes called "advanced calculus" and thankfully, thus also enters this book. Bryant starts off assuming that rational numbers behave as we know from elementary school and then constructs the real numbers by adding a completeness axiom. From there he introduces the concept of limits and also the epsilon-delta technique in an accessible way before going on to the topics of differentiation and integration. Even though this is a mathematically rigorous book, the author manages to keep things interesting by introducing topics and theorems in bite-sized chunks. Basically, the book doesn't go beyond the analysis of calculus normally taught at the undergraduate level, but rather reintroduces it properly and puts it on the rigorous plane with which all graduate mathematics students shall become familiar. Along with all that, there's an excellent selection of interesting exercises with solutions at the back. These exercises range from the rather simple to the very tricky. If you are a mathematics major, you will probably not be lucky enough to have this as your textbook in analysis class, but you should buy a copy and read it before and during the class so that you know what is really trying to be conveyed.

Unlike many of the other reviewers of this work, I found Dr. Bryant's informal writing style a hassle. While I can appreciate the conversational approach, I found his writing to be very lacking in detail and too casual to yield in-dpeth knowledge. I suppose this work was intended to introduce Analysis in a non-scary, casual style, but so much substance gets left out because of it. I've always been fond of rigor, and I deperately need rigor when learning higher math. Some people equate rigor with obfuscation, but I have found that you can have rigor wth clarity. I found Kosmala's "Advanced Calculus: A Friendly Approach" (now called "A Friendly Introduction to Analysis") to be a much more rigorous and complete introduction that is also very "friendly" indeed. Although this book will serve as a "breezy" (and somewhat shallow) introduction to Analysis I would recommend Kosmala's work over this one to anyone who wants a complete and in depth treatment of the subject that also gently guides the first time student through it.
Great Introduction.......2002-12-21
This is a text for Real Analysis at the Junior Level (American university level). It goes to extreme lengths to make analysis understandable to people who have no prior exposure. The organization is good. Completeness is introduced early as (the "piggy in the middle"). Proofs are written in detail with fill-in-the-blank spots to force the reader to follow the argument. It has good exercises making it an easy book to teach out of. Excellent for the absolute beginner. Good candidate for the classroom.
Basic Real Analysis unleashed.......2001-10-22
Bryant builds the basic concepts of a first course in mathematical analysis upon the notion of numerical sequences. This approach gives an unified vision and amazing insights. Infinite series, limits, derivatives, Riemann integral are studied in an integrated vision. Clear ideas, illustrations and humor are found across all its pages. Good and illuminating exercises, too. An excellent introduction to basic real analysis.

When I teach computer programming, the sections that raise the greatest amount of interest are those that involve the manipulation of images. Therefore, it is natural to me that any mathematics that involves the manipulation of images would generate a great deal of student interest. I was a working mathematician when the concept of fractals hit the world, and like so many others was caught up in the excitement. I wrote programs to generate them and read all of the major books.
That was almost two decades ago, and the field has continued to expand. In this book, you will read about projects where math teachers have incorporated fractals into the curriculum. It is no surprise to me that it was almost universally a success, the sheer beauty of the fractal images guarantees interest and the increase in computing power has made the generation of images much easier. Many of the first images I created required overnight runs, something that can be done in minutes today.
The fact that the images do model much of the natural world also increases the interest. Nature is irregular and unpredictable in the micro sense, and fractals give us a way to describe and maybe understand it. The articles are all well written and easy to follow, and many different types of projects are demonstrated. Some of the papers describe the structure of courses in fractals, so if you have an interest in creating such a course, you can find your point of origin.
While fractals have occasionally suffered from the common malady of being oversold, they do provide a bridge between mathematics and the real world. Therefore, the study of fractals should be part of the mathematics curriculum, and in this book you can read about how many people have successfully done it. Another quality book on contemporary mathematics, it should be part of the next iteration of library purchases everywhere.
