Book Description

In 1997, Dr. Kaw introduced the first edition of Mechanics of Composite Materials, receiving high praise for its comprehensive scope and detailed examples. He also introduced the groundbreaking PROMAL software, a valuable tool for designing and analyzing structures made of composite materials. Updated and expanded to reflect recent advances in the field, this Second Edition retains all of the features-logical, streamlined organization, thorough coverage, and self-contained treatment-that made the first edition a bestseller. The book begins with a question-and-answer style introduction to composite materials, including updated material on new applications. The remainder of the book discusses macromechanical analysis of both individual lamina and laminate materials; micromechanical analysis of lamina including elasticity based models; failure, analysis, and design of laminates; and a new chapter devoted to symmetrical and nonsymmetrical beams. New examples and derivations were added to the chapters on micromechanical and macromechanical analysis of lamina, and the design chapter includes two new examples: design of a pressure vessel and a drive shaft. The author also added key terms and a summary to each chapter. Updated PROMAL software is available at the author's Web site, updated frequently, along with new multiple-choice questions. With superior tools and complete coverage, Mechanics of Composite Materials, Second Edition makes it easier than ever to integrate composite materials into your designs with confidence.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference.......2006-11-09

As a practicing engineer, I was refreshed to find such a well-organized, no-fluff reference on laminated composites. The examples are presented in a concise, piecemeal fashion; they are worked start-to-finish, right down to the algebra in many cases. No insulting assumptions about your level of competence are to be found.

The section on design and analysis provides an excellent arrangement of fully-worked engineering problems ranging from filament-wound driveshafts and pressure vessels (to demonstrate mixed-loadcase scenarios) to weight and cost optimization strategies for those interested in comparing composites to isotropic materials like steel and aluminum.

While the book provides an excellent overview of classical laminated plate theory, the one thing I found to be in want of was a proper section on the analysis of plates and shells. For that, the mathematically inclined reader is directed to J.N. Reddy's authoritative treatise on composites titled Mechanics of Laminated Composite Plates and Shells.

That is not to say that Mr. Kaw's title is in any way inferior to Reddy's work. It's rather like comparing apples to oranges; as such, to pit the two works against one another is inappropriate. On the one hand, Kaw provides a very digestable (and long overdue) introduction to composite materials, going into great detail about the terminology, sign conventions, coordinate systems, and mechanical behavior of composites without becoming long-winded or mathematically convoluted. Reddy picks up where Kaw leaves off, introducing variational methods like the Rayleigh-Ritz method, as well as energy principles from the likes of Galerkin. From there, the reader is presented with a rich array of analytical and numerical methods of finding stresses and strains under various types of loading and boundary conditions (which is what the practicing engineer is ultimately looking for).

What Reddy's work does for layerwise and shear-deformable theories of plates and shells, Kaw has done for the classical description of laminated composites. Mechanics of Composite Materials effectively bridges the gap between the outdated books of yesterday, and the technical articles that belong in academic journals. I can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a proper introduction to the design and analysis of composites, while still being extremely accessible to the undergraduate.

Book Description

This monograph presents a concise and thorough treatment of release, migration and entrapment of fine particles in natural porous media.
The first chapter treats the practical consequences of release and migration of fine particles in porous media. This is followed by a discussion of the basic mechanisms of release, transport and entrapment of fines. Mathematical and network models for prediction of permeability reduction are subsequently discussed. The last two chapters cover methods to prevent the release of fines and address the consequences for soil pollution.
This comprehensive book is of interest to chemical, civil and petroleum engineers and environmental scientists and can also be used as a reference textbook for courses at senior and graduate level.

5 out of 5 stars From the Experts.......2000-08-16

Fogler and his erstwhile student Khilar have come back to the topic that was the focus of their original collaboration. Khilar's seminal thesis set the tone for migration of fines in porous media back in the 80s. Fogler has had an army of students and collaboartors, from around the world, explored various aspects of particle transport in porous media - like oil reservoirs. This monograph is a succinct and lucid account of their knowledge and work in the area. I recommend it to those want to learn more about colloid stability and interparticle forces and transport.

Book Description

The use of composite materials in engineering structures continues to increase dramatically, and in the seven years since the first edition of this book appeared, advances in materials modeling in general and composite materials and structures in particular have been just as significant. To reflect these developments, renowned author, educator, and researcher J.N. Reddy has thoroughly revised, updated, and enhanced his standard-setting Mechanics of Laminated Composite Plates and Shells: Theory and Analysis. New in the Second Edition: · A new chapter dedicated to the theory and analysis of laminated shells · New discussions addressing smart structures and functionally graded materials · Thorough updates to all chapters and a reorganization of chapters that improves the clarity of the presentation · Additional exercises and examples No other book is as up to date. No other book approaches the subject primarily from the finite element method. And no other book provides such full, self-contained coverage of the theories, analytical solutions, and linear and nonlinear finite element models of plate and shell laminated composite structures.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Text.......2006-01-04

I really appreciate good engineering books, and this is one of the best I've read. The book covers all aspects of laminiated composite plates, from basic tensor math and anisotropic elasticity, to nonlinear and finite element analysis. The material is presented in a complete and very readible way that makes the subject seem less daunting than other texts I have used.

The text assumes that the reader has a generic engineering-math background: differential equations, vector calculus and some linear algebra. Beyond this basic background, math that is indroduced in the book is well explained, and derivations very complete and easy to follow. I particularly liked the succinct introduction to variational methods used in mechanics. Several laminated plate theories are presented. Also, loads beyond basic stress are mentioned (hygrothermal, electro (piezo), thermal, etc.)

I found this book to be much more approachable than books like, say, Timoshenko's Theory of Plates and Shells.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2005-08-25

I am a mechanical engineer, finishing a Phd in the next year. This book is an outstanding resource for Linear / NonLinear Modeling of various plate and shell structures. Complete Equations and derivations are given, which is a rarity in most texts.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2003-03-19

I thought this was a good book, however it is very dense with the theory and can be hard to swallow.

Is an excellent book, full coverage about composite plates, the finite element analysis chapter is very complete.

    Book Description

The theory of composite materials is the study of partial differential equations with rapid oscillations in their coefficients. Although extensively studied for more than a hundred years, an explosion of ideas in the past four decades has dramatically increased our understanding of the relationship among the properties of the constituent materials, the underlying microstructure of a composite, and the overall effective moduli that govern the macroscopic behavior. This renaissance has been fueled by the technological need for improving our knowledge base of composites, by the advance of the underlying mathematical theory of homogenization, by the discovery of new variational principles, by the recognition of how important the subject is to solving structural optimization problems, and by the realization of the connection with the mathematical problem of quasiconvexification. This book surveys these exciting developments at the frontier of mathematics and presents many new results.

The Storming Media report number is A068473. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Exposure for 2 hr to smoke generated from pyrolysis of 100 g of B2- ACM was lethal to experimental animals. Surviving animals showed elevated carboxyhemogobin levels, severe respiratory acidosis, and diminished oxygen transport in the blood, the combination of which was deemed the cause of death. These animals also showed signs of pulmonary inflammatory response. Two days post exposure, animals exhibited pulmonary pathophysiology indicative of restrictive lung disease. The pattern of pulmonary dysfunction at 14 days post exposure was similar, with some measures of lung function returning to normal while others remained significantly different from normal values. Although no deaths occurred, similar patterns of pulmonary dysfunction were evident in animals exposed for 1 hr to smoke from pyrolysis of 55 or 100 g of 132-ACM. These animals also had elevated carboxyhemogobin levels, decreased blood pH, and diminished oxygen capacity immediately post exposure however these symptoms were not as severe as those in animals exposed for 2 hr to smoke generated from pyrolysis of 100 g of B2-ACM. Quantitative analysis of a few selected smoke gases (CO, CO(2), NO(x), SO(2) and aerosol particulate consistently accounted for over 80% of the amount of B2-ACM that actually burned. Calculation of the nominal concentration of the smoke correlated well with the chemical analysis, the bulk amount of B2-ACM used to generate the smoke, and the pyrolysis rate.

The Storming Media report number is A187083. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Exposure for 30 minutes to diluted smoke from pyrolysis of advanced composite material used in the construction of the B2 bomber (B2-ACM) caused an airway reactivity (AR) response in naive guinea pigs reminiscent of a human asthmatic episode. Animals exposed to diluted smoke from pyrolysis of 5, 10 and 100 grams of B2-ACM showed changes in a number of parameters characterizing ventilation, breathing pattern, and breath structure. These changes are considered indicative of bronchoconstriction. The highest exposure concentration also elicited convulsions in the animals, which may or may not be related to the AR response. Upon treatment with fresh air there was recovery period in which breathing returned to normal. However the recovery was transient with respiratory parameters returning to abnormal levels; indicating a "rebound" constrictive event even in the presence of clean air. Animals exposed to diluted smoke from the pyrolysis of 2 grams of B2-ACM demonstrated minimal changes in only a few of the respiratory parameters, suggesting that there might be a threshold for B2-ACM smoke elicited AR response.

          Book Description

Anisotropic Elasticity offers for the first time a comprehensive survey of the analysis of anisotropic materials that can have up to twenty-one elastic constants. Focusing on the mathematically elegant and technically powerful Stroh formalism as a means to understanding the subject, the author tackles a broad range of key topics, including antiplane deformations, Green's functions, stress singularities in composite materials, elliptic inclusions, cracks, thermo-elasticity, and piezoelectric materials, among many others. Well written, theoretically rigorous, and practically oriented, the book will be welcomed by students and researchers alike.

5 out of 5 stars Anisotropic Elasticity: Theory and Applications.......2004-11-23

This is the first monograph dealing with anisotropic elasticity by means of Stroh formalism. The author presented a very comprehensive review of the development of this topic in the last five decades since Stroh's work. Theories developed in this monograph are very useful to the study of general anisotropic problems in crystals and composite materials, such as acoustics, contact mechanics, fracture mechanics. By this method, you are able to express your solution in a very concise while beatiful format, which is almost impossible by other mothods. This method is easily performed by some standard computer codes, although the book seems not interested in this.

I keep this book as a main reference when I study fracture, and wave problems relating polymer composites and other layered structures.

One of the minor disadvantages of this book maybe is that the book did not consider problems with finite dimensions such as layered materials.

To study this monography should have some solid fundamentals of Complex Analysis and Matrix Theory.

It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A566973. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: A pool of liquid with a horizontal free surface is bounded on one side by a vertical solid wall, which is maintained at a cold temperature relative to the core flow region. Strong temperature gradients along the surface give rise to surface tension variations (thermocapillary stress), which drives flow. Thin viscous boundary layers form along the surface and wall. A boundary- layer model is designed which captures the dynamics of the cold corner, applicable for any Marangoni number M and Prandtl number P in the convective inertial regime. Analytical expressions for the velocity and boundary-layer thicknesses are developed, which allow accurate prediction of the flow field. The core flow region (outside the viscous boundary layers) is treated as irrotational flow and Laplace's equation is solved using both a Green's function approach and a complex variables approach in the quarter-plane. The flow along the wall is treated as a plane wall jet. The two dimensional unsteady heat equation is solved using an alternating direction implicit method. Results show that the flow into the corner is strong enough to contain the thermal field, compressing the isotherms along the wall after steady-state is reached. Additionally, a uniform stream function prediction is developed, by matching the inner and outer flows giving a relatively accurate depiction of the flow.
