Book Description
Published April 2004
The 4th edition Convective Heat and Mass Transfer continues the trend of encouraging the use of a numerically based, computational approach to solving convective heat and mass transfer problems, in addition to classical problem-solving approaches. This best-selling text also presents a strong theoretical basis for the subject of convective heat and mass transfer by focusing on boundary layer theory and provides optional coverage of the software teaching tool TEXSTAN.

Book Description
Convective Heat Transfer presents an effective approach to teaching convective heat transfer. The authors systematically develop the topics and present them from basic principles. They emphasize physical insight, problem-solving, and the derivation of basic equations. To help students master the subject matter, they discuss the implementations of the basic equations and the workings of examples in detail. The material also includes carefully prepared problems at the end of each chapter. In this Second Edition, topics have been carefully chosen and the entire book has been reorganized for the best presentation of the subject matter. New property tables are included, and the authors dedicate an entire chapter to empirical correlations for a wide range of applications of single-phase convection. The book is excellent for helping students quickly develop a solid understanding of convective heat transfer.
Book Description
This popular and well-established reference on two-phase flows, boiling, and condensation is now available in paperback. `Convection Boiling and Condensation' is written primarily as an aid to heat exchanger design and is in its third edition. The first two editions of the book were widely adopted in industry, by design and development engineers, and also as a graduate text for students studying this area. The third edition covers the new advances made since the last edition in 1982, and significantly extends coverage to include new problems after each chapter to enhance its use as a text.
Customer Reviews:
A renewed fundamental book.......2000-08-08
Possibly the single problem with the original version of "Convective Boiling and Condensation" by J.G. Collier was that it was getting too old. After the update made in the last versions with the work by J.R. Thome, the book has been renewed recovering the role of a fundamental textbook to be considered for both teaching and research. It is full of the best explanations you can find about several basic heat transfer mechanisms and provides precious suggestions for further reading and more in depth study. A nice book indeed.

Customer Reviews:
Decent Book on Convective Heat Transfer.......2001-03-16
I purchased 3 convective heat transfer books from Amazon on behalf of my company - including this book. IMHO the other two were duds, but this one is pretty good. I myself own 3 other similar books and I can think of only one other (Bejan) that is as useful.
This a textbook for college students, but it is a nice reference as well.
I like that it mixes theory with some computational methods (finite difference), because after all, theory is critical to understanding but in many cases we will compute the results. This not really a book for learning CFD, but the numerical results are a nice complement to the theory - and extend the discussion to geometries without closed form solutions.
For those interested, the authors offer the Fortran source from a website for several programs referenced in the book.
The book is sensibly organized by classes of flows, internal & external for laminar, turbulent and natural convection. Plus porous media and condensation. I particularily like the chapter on natural convection inside of enclosures.
There are several really good analyses and scale arguments developed in this book, a lot of solutions to NSE's for many real situations.
Overall I'd say it is really a good introduction for someone who wants to do more than look up a few formulae.

Product Description
Free Convective Heat Transfer is a thorough survey of various kinds of free-convective flows and heat transfer. Reference data are accompanied by a large number of photographs originating from different optical visualization methods illustrating the different types of flow. The formulas derived from numerical and analytical investigations are valuable tools for engineering calculations. They are written in their most compact and general form in order to allow for an extensive range of different variants of boundary and initial conditions, which, in turn, leads to a wide applicability to different flow types. Some specific engineering problems are solved in the book as exemplary applications of these formulas.

Modern Compressible Flow: With Historical Perspective
ASIN: 0070337217 |
Book Description
This book is designed as a textbook for mechanical engineering seniors or beginning graduate students. The book provides a reasonable theoretical basis for a subject that has traditionally had a very strong experimental base. The core of the book is devoted to boundary layer theory with special emphasis on the laminar and turbulent thermal boundary layer. Two chapters on heat exchanger theory are included since this subject is one of the principle application areas of convective heat transfer.
Customer Reviews:
Good as introduction, but less good as a reference book.......2004-02-19
The book explains the momentum, heat and mass transfer in a quite accessible form. It is well organized and the reader will find quite quickly, what (s)he needs. The book is very pedagogic. It is devoted to the heat transfer theory. Consequently, it contains only a few experimental correlations. I would recommend it for the undergraduate and graduate students. The people concerned with the industrial applications will need to accompany it by a handbook, which provides heat transfer correlations in specific cases.

Microhydrodynamics: Principles and Selected Applications
ASIN: 0750691174 |
Book Description
Laminar Flow and Convective Transport Processes: Scaling Principles and Asymptotic Analysis presents analytic methods for the solution of fluid mechanics and convective transport processes, all in the laminar flow regime. This book brings together the results of almost 30 years of research on the use of nondimensionalization, scaling principles, and asymptotic analysis into a comprehensive form suitable for presentation in a core graduate-level course on fluid mechanics and the convective transport of heat. A considerable amount of material on viscous-dominated flows is covered.
A unique feature of this book is its emphasis on scaling principles and the use of asymptotic methods, both as a means of solution and as a basis for qualitative understanding of the correlations that exist between independent and dependent dimensionless parameters in transport processes. Laminar Flow and Convective Transport Processes is suitable for use as a textbook for graduate courses in fluid mechanics and transport phenomena and also as a reference for researchers in the field.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent research and reference text........2003-08-04
Gary Leal is best known for his work on free surface flows of drops and as such this book shows some of techniques used to solve for such flows although this is in the minority. Overall this book is heavily research oriented with meticulously worked solutions for trasnport processes in fluid dynamics. The book covers asymptotic approximations, creeping flows and some heat transfer as well as some slender body theory. It comprises many, once, research problems in the fluid dynamics field, each of them worked out in detail. It requires good mathematical skill and knowledge as well as a good physical understanding. If you possess these two prerequisites the book is an excellent source of understanding in analytical fluid dynamics. There is much explanantion of important concepts and the derivation of the relevant equations is well constructed. Unfortunately the book is also quite expensive but has provided me with a useful reference in my current research as well as offering interesting examples of various analytical techniques used in fluid dynamics research.
An excellent research and reference text.
For well-prepared students and researchers..........2001-12-24
I've read the book - not the entire content -, it's really a good book. Every line needs deep understanding in physics and math. I want to recommend this book for students and researchers who have deep and strong foundation on math and fluid mechanics. But, I don't think this book is an adequate textbook for just one sememster coursework. It's really difficult!

Book Description
This comprehensive presentation of the whole field of heat and mass transfer makes the reader familar with the fundamentals and enables him to solve practical problems. The basic theory is developed systematically, and the solution methods to all important problems are covered in detail. Therefore, this book will be useful not only to students, but likewise to scientists and practising engineers. All areas of heat and mass transfer are dealt with. Many calculated examples in the text and numerous exercises and elaborate solutions will facilitate learning and understanding.
For the second edition, changes apply to heat and mass transfer correlations based on theoretical results or experimental findings. They were adapted to the state-of -the-art. Some of the worked examples as well as the compilation were revised or updated.
