Required reading for any child "labeled" ADD or ADHD or any Teacher!.......2007-08-27
This book is incredible. All of my child's teachers wanted me to drug her to keep her in their style of learning "box". After reading this book, I found many tips and tricks to deal with her visual learning style and also it helped me to realize just how special she is!! It can be difficult raising a child who has been labeled ADHD but this book makes you realize how luck you are to have such a special child and that it isn't a bad thing, it's just different!
This book should be required reading for ALL teachers and administrators!!
The best book on ADD .......2007-01-28
Since my son was diagnosed 2 weeks ago I've been absorbing as much information as I can on ADHD. This book is the one (out of 5) that stands out the most so far. Freed hits the nail on the head with this book. There is potential and brilliance in these children that most schools (even the Montessori school my son is in) just don't know how to tap into. My son loves doing the reading, spelling and math exercises suggested. If you have a child with ADD/ADHD this book is a must!
Required Reading.......2007-01-12
I was treated to a presentation at our school by Mr. Freed. I was so moved by his eloquent explanations of children I see every day in my classroom, year after year. I am a middle school teacher who is presented with children who for years have been misunderstood, and untaught because of a lack of knowledge concerning their abilities, not disabilities. Simply understanding the concept of a right-brained child is tremendously insightful for any teacher, but should be required reading for any teacher of language arts and math. It has opened my eyes, mind and heart to my astounding students.
A Must Read.......2007-01-09
For anyone raising, teaching or otherwise involved in the care of kids with ADD/ADHD, this book is a "must read." As with any text, not every suggestion works for every reader, but those that do evoke amazing success.
Finally a book that has hands on practical knowledge to pass on........2006-10-17
I have been teaching my son, and trying to figure out just how the information is suppose to get in and this book was the lightbulb. After reading this book I thought I would try some of the ideas with teaching him spelling and other subjects. I was not expecting results, wow was I surprised! He has just taken off like a rocket. He can't get enough. He finally says that the subject matter makes sense to him and it is truly just the way in which it was being presented to him. I am a believer. I have a right brained child!

Good for Fourier analysis and much more.......2005-12-04
This Schaum's outline is unique in that you not only get a thorough coverage of Fourier analysis, but of other orthogonal functions such as Bessel, Legendre, Hermite, and Laguerre. The first chapter would be interesting to students of partial differential equations because of its excellent treatment of boundary value problems and of the different types of partial differential equations. It makes an interesting first taste of PDE solution methods. Chapter two is a traditional treatment of Fourier series and its applications. As in the first chapter, it is the applications that make the chapter unique as the Fourier series is used to solve problems in heat flow, Laplace's equations, and vibrating systems. Chapter three has a good discussion of why you would actually care if a function is orthogonal. Chapter four discusses special functions and how they are evaluated. Chapters five and six are all about applications of the Fourier integral and of the Bessel function respectively. Chapter seven uses the Legendre functions to solve problems such as finding the potential interior and exterior to a sphere given a specific charge distribution. Chapter eight finishes the guide with a discussion of Hermite and Laguerre polynomials, more from a properties standpoint than from an applications standpoint. The reader of this guide should already be knowledgeable of Calculus and differential equations, and should probably have some kind of background in physics or engineering to get the most from the book. It would be a good supplement for the student of partial differential equations or signal processing as well as the student of Fourier analysis. I think what really sets this book apart is its ability to act as a stand-alone guide to the student with the required prerequisites and to actually to inspire you to study applied mathematics more. As for my own story, I picked up a previous edition of this book 17 years ago for a coworker that thought it might be helpful in a class he was taking. He decided he didn't want it and so I began thumbing through it. I found the applications sections to be so interesting and inspiring that I wound up going back to graduate school and eventually picked up three master's degrees! If you like this Schaum's outline, you might also want to pick up "Schaum's Outline of Advanced Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists" by the same author. It is also full of mathematics inspired by real world problems in need of solution.
Step-by-step explanations.......2002-08-28
This text is a good supplement to understanding the use of Fourier analysis and how it is used in real-world applications. The explanations are to the point and the solved problems are all fairly easy to follow.
At the end of the chapter, there are exercises to test your knowledge, and most of the answers are in the back of the book. Modeling the exercises on the problems, you can usually work out what you should do for the exercise.
This is a good study guide.
Good study aid!.......2000-03-28
Very helpful to me in my medical imaging and signal processing assignments! A good buy for any student of engineering or science, particuarly useful to the study of signal analysis.
Book Description
Special functions, which include the trigonometric functions, have been used for centuries. Their role in the solution of differential equations was exploited by Newton and Leibniz, and the subject of special functions has been in continuous development ever since. In just the past thirty years several new special functions and applications have been discovered. This treatise presents an overview of the area of special functions, focusing primarily on the hypergeometric functions and the associated hypergeometric series. It includes both important historical results and recent developments and shows how these arise from several areas of mathematics and mathematical physics. Particular emphasis is placed on formulas that can be used in computation. The book begins with a thorough treatment of the gamma and beta functions that are essential to understanding hypergeometric functions. Later chapters discuss Bessel functions, orthogonal polynomials and transformations, the Selberg integral and its applications, spherical harmonics, q-series, partitions, and Bailey chains. This clear, authoritative work will be a lasting reference for students and researchers in number theory, algebra, combinatorics, differential equations, applied mathematics, mathematical computing, and mathematical physics.

A Modern Whittaker and Watson, Buy It.......2004-10-24
This book is great. It is the best overview I have ever seen of the primary special functions, as seen from a modern viewpoint. Buy it and you will spend many happy hours reading the theorems it contains, and doing the excercizes at the end of each chapter.
A book comes close to " A course of modern analysis ".......2001-08-07
Though this book cannot be compared to Whittaker and Watson's classic book. It comes quite close to it. I just want to comment on the the area covers are too concentrated and the rigorous manner which is the hall mark of " Modern Analysis " is lacking. Anyway, this book deserves 5 stars.
clean and concise.......2001-02-11
It has a very good style of writing for the nature of mathematics. It is clean, no unnecessary explanation or examples. In a way, one can feel something similar to Axler's. It is an excellent reference book. One should keep this book just as Axler's Linear Algebra Done Right, Numerical Recipe, DE Knuth's Art of Programming.

Book Description
Translated by Richard Silverman. Famous Russian work covers basic theory of the more important special functions and their application to specific problems of physics and engineering. Most space devoted to application of cylinder functions and spherical harmonics. Also treated: gamma function, probability integral and related functions, Airy functions, hyper-geometric functions, more.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for people who want to actually apply special functions........2006-01-19
As the title indicates, the book is designed with the goal of application front and center. That said, it is also important to note that the theoretical background is developed with full mathematical rigor. You can easily see this from the fact that whenever an infinite series is differentiated, its uniform convergence in the region of interest is always established beforehand. And this is just one example.
Now, given the fact that special functions is a vast subject, and the fact that the book is barely 300 pages long, it is obvious that the theoretical coverage, though rigorous, has to be reined in. By this I refer to the fact that most functions are developed from the point of view of series solutions to differential equations, while solution by contour integrals in the plane is basically absent. But then again, it doesn't matter how you develop the functions, the key is to know their properties and be able to apply them. The book will show you just how to do that. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
For a more broad-based theoretical coverage, I recommend Whittaker and Watson (but of course), and the book "Special Functions" by X. Z. Wang. These two books complement each other like lovers.
extremely useful, very concise.......2005-08-10
Well worth buying, extremely handy, tons of information very much organized for you
Excellent discussion of the functions used to solve PDE.......2003-03-14
Yet another excellect translation by Silverman. I've only been in possession of this book for a few days but it's already becoming a favorite mathematics text. Not a pure mathematics text but certainly a very thorough, lucid and most certainly enjoyable discussion of applied mathematics with a particularly engaging discussion of the solution of partial differential equations (Laplacian, Poisson etc.) by means of separation of variables and integral transforms. Along the way it develops the theoretical essentials of gamma functions, exponential integrals, orthogonal polynomials, Bessel functions, spherical harmonics among others. Clearly written with an emphasis on explaining the process of discovering solutions rather than merely presenting particular solutions (though it does have enlightening examples). IMO, well worth the price.
A good book on this subject.......2002-08-28
Of course this book cannot be compared to " A course of modern analysis ", but as a book in special functions, it have served its purpose. I would also like to make a tribute to Richard Silverman for translating ( not just direct traslating, he translate in a style make it readable to English world. )
Excellent Source of Applications for Special Functions.......2000-06-03
This is a book which I cannot say much about except for the unusual thoroughness, accompanied by detail and depth in treatment of the underlying mathematical properties and applications of Special Functions.
Lebedev is the quintessential mathematical expert in applying Special Functions to problems in Physics and Engineering, being that he can illustrate all important concepts clearly and umambiguously with carefully prepared diagrams as well as words. I was able to cite the solution of the a problem involving a propagating electromagnetic wave along a transmission line for an important Engineering course project. For such a problem, Lebedev offers a far more detailed and precise solution with given Special Functions than anything I have ever seen in other books of the same nature with the possible exception of a specialized treatise by an MIT EE faculty member on applied electromagnetism. He also comes across as meticulous in derivations of solutions to problems worked out compared to many other authors whose works I have read. This is because he hardly ever skips an important step in deriving a solution for any given problem by leaving it out for the reader's imagination. Yet we know Lebedev as perhaps a mathematician who may not be realistically expected to come up with such complete and exhaustive solutions to practical or real-world problems, worked out with clarity as well as precision and depth. There are numerous other examples which he worked out for different applications (e.g, Legendre's and Laguerre's functions) invariably after he took pains to delineate the various mathematical properties of the Special Functions utilized to obtain the closed-form solutions. He also covers various mathematical functions which may not be as familiar to many engineering practitioners but nonetheless have an important place in applied mathematical analysis. In a sense, he saves them for occasions when we as readers may need to probe further into unfamiliar territory.
So if you are looking for depth and precision in analysis of physical problems in Engineering and Science, or are trying to cope with reaearch problems in Applied Mathematics, try out this book by Lebedev. It can initially come across as difficult to understand, but Lebedev expects the reader to follow along through diligence. It is almost one of a kind, being that it is very clear and lucid without noticeable loss in depth and mathematical rigor. I highly recommend it because I believe that few other books can even come close in offering good examples in solutions to real-world problems and, at the same time, demonstrate the power of Special Functions in applications. Of course, it is also very inexpensive.

Just the best book for self study and review.......2005-12-31
This book can help an alien to math understand a calculus concept.
Good as supplemental text book, NOT good as primary textbook.......2004-02-14
There are not enough examples to explain everything you would need to know. I've found I had to go to the web or other more basic Calculus books many times to try to solve some of the problems in there. There are better books out there for those of us looking for complete breakdown of the problems and better explanations.
An excellent introduction and review of Calculus .............2001-07-10
I trudge back to this book again and again, being embarassed at having forgotten some basic idea or technique. This is an excellent supplemental text to a formal Calculus textbook like "Calculus " by Stewart. The writing is lucid and ideas are explained with the novice in mind. I find that reading this book first BEFORE getting into a meatier textbook helps me understand the material.
My experience has been that if I do not "do calculus" at least twice a week I forget the techniques (not ideas) almost immediately. Therefore, if you want a review of Calculus this book is a great tool. If you are new to calculus this book will help you understand important concepts like differentiation vs integration. I also found that reading pertinent chapters in Selby's "Geometry and Trigonometry For Calculus" and then reading related material in this book is a tremendous help.
Another strong point is that for us over 50 the font size and book layout is easy on the eye. So whether you are a novice or someone who has not had the chance to use Calculus in a while; or someone "brand new" to Calculus, get this book. An excellent resource for learning and entertainment!!
Very good value for the budget-minded math student.......2000-05-25
Elliott Mendelson does an excellent job of presenting basic calculus concepts in an inexpensive book. His explanations are very clear, and the book is actually fun to use. Perhaps my only criticism is that this book does not use color which often helps to clarify figures of graphs, but black and white figures are to be expected in an outline. If you're interested in a supplement to your text or if you want a book for self-study, I strongly recommend "Beginning Calculus."
Excellent value; good for self-study........1998-02-26
I use this book in a calculus class I teach on America Online. For the price, it is an excellent review of the subject. It covers the same material found in much more expensive texts. There are many exercises for students to do, with answers in the back of the book. It only lacks the full-color graphics that adorn conventional calculus textbooks.
I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn calculus by self-study. It is also a good supplement to a conventional text used in a class. The best way to learn math is by doing problems, and this book has plenty, including many detailed solutions.

Customer Reviews:
Masterly and excellent.......2000-03-31
What I enjoy about this book is its clear and complete exposition of the asymptotic theory of (mostly linear second-order) differential equations and special functions. The author has not just taken a chunk of material out of his research and redressed it as a monograph. There is a great deal of painstaking care evident in his definition of useful tools for error estimates and in the statement of highly useful and accurate asymptotic theorems. Although the result is necessarily much more detailed, even finicky, than a reader dipping in and out might want, I cannot think of a better reference for asymptotic theorems for linear ODEs, and special functions that solve them, than this one. One of the reasons for this is that the author gives very precise error estimates. Another reason is the concise and pithy exposition which is pitched just right for a mathematical reader (who is at least at the graduate student level). I recommend this book highly as a reference for very accurate, rigorous results in asymptotics, or to browse through as an example of masterly development of the subject of asymptotics.

Book Description
As SWAT has become more established within the police community, a certain language and jargon has also evolved with it. THE SWAT CYCLOPEDIA has been developed as a basic reference for this terminology as well as other state-of-the-art information associated with the police special weapons and tactics function. Within this source is a wide range of technical data pertaining to the tactical topics of training, equipment, deployment, operational strategies, slang, quotes, helpful hints and historical details, along with scores of other informative features. So that a more comprehensive understanding of the world of SWAT can be obtained, such topics as counter-terrorism, domestic terrorism, and international terrorism have also been included. In order to make the book more useful, many of the terms in the text have been cross-referenced. It will be of interest to police officers assigned to a SWAT team, as well as to those individuals who are interested in tactical response operations and what is involved in this law enforcement function. The manual encompasses certain administrative considerations that pertain to the organization and management of an agency¹s SWAT program, and therefore, it is also designed to provide particular assistance to the tactical commander seeking solutions or to the law enforcement executive who may be planning the incorporation of a special weapons and tactics unit within his or her agency.

Don't waste your money.......2007-05-02
As a veteran SWAT officer I can find nothing positive to say about this "Book" Upon receiveing it, you notice it is bound by a cheap plastic spiral binder. It is in a dictionary style format with only the most basic of definitions. The illustrations appear to be drawn by an amatuer graphic artist. Some of the drawings are actually crude stick figures! There is nothing in here that will aid an active operative or an officer who strives to become one. It is especially bad when you consider how much this publication costs. I give it one star only because Amazon has nothing lower.
