5 out of 5 stars Effective refresher ... Efficient reference.......2007-01-07

I recommend this text to financial professionals I teach ... VERY helpful to clear the cobwebs several years after college!

3 out of 5 stars Great for more advanced courses...........2006-12-12

I bought this book as a study aid for my Elementary Statistics class. Although the book does give you many examples to help solve, it gets a little too complicated for a beginning statistics class. It became hard to sort through the things I needed to gain a basic understanding of the fundamentals of statistics. If you are needing this book for your job or a more advanced statistics course, I would recommend it, but it's one for the beginner to leave alone.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Guide to Statistics.......2006-06-13

This excellent book provides a comprehensive look at statistical methods. It's a great reference guide with 19 chapters, each of which build nicely on one another.

Chapters 1 through 11 lay the foundation of statistical study and the reader should benefit greatly from this framework.

Specifically, Chapters 1 through 3 cover Variables and Graphs, Frequency Distributions and Mean-Median-Mode concepts. Chapters 4 through 6 move on to cover Standard Deviation, Skewness and Elementary Probability Theory. Chapter 7 then discusses Binomial, Normal and Poisson Distributions.

Chapters 8, 9, 10 and 11 delve into Sampling, Statistical Estimation, Statistical Decision and Small Sampling Theory.

The remaining chapters offer practical insights into such topics as Chi-Square test, Correlation Theory, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Time Series Analysis and Statistical Process Control. Much of this appears in the CFA curriculum and therefore is a worthy supplemental study.

True to its format, this Schaum's book helps readers via its question and answer format in each of its chapters. Going through these problems teaches and reinforces concepts taught in the first pages of each chapter in the book.

Great job authors! I'm hoping others will benefit from this book too.

4 out of 5 stars Schaum's Outline of Statistics.......2006-03-03

This is a handy desk guide to statistics for someone who needs a statistical referemce as part of their job but is not a statistician, ie, performance management, data preparation or other information analysis. I compared this book to many others and found it the most comprehensive.

1 out of 5 stars A Failed Attempt .......2005-01-12

This book is sloppily edited, with numerous typos in the equations. Page 91 has two symbolic errors plus a text error.
Overbar omitted twice on page 19 giving a nonsensical formula Z = (X - X)/s

    Book Description

This book deals with a class of mathematical problems which involve the minimization of the sum of a volume and a surface energy and have lately been refered to as 'free discontinuity problems'. The aim of this book is twofold: The first three chapters present all the basic prerequisites for the treatment of free discontinuity and other variational problems in a systematic, general, and self-contained way. In the later chapters, the reader is introduced to the theory of free discontinuity problems, to the space of special functions of bounded variation, and is presented with a detailed analysis of the Mumford-Shah image segmentation problem. Existence, regularity and qualitative properties of solutions are explained and a survey is given on the current knowledge of this challenging mathematical problem. Free discontinuity problems reveal a wide range of applications. The theory embodies classical problems, e.g. related to phase transitions, or fracture and plasticity in continuum mechanics, as well as more recent ones like edge detection in image analysis. This book provides the reader with a solid introduction to the field, written by principle contributors to the theory. The first half of the book contains a comprehensive and updated treatment of the theory of Functions of Bounded Variation and of the mathematical prerequisites of that theory, that is Abstract Measure Theory and Geometric Measure Theory.

      Book Description

One of the major concentrated activities of the past decade in control theory has been the development of the so-called 'H-infinity-optimal control theory', which addresses the issue of worst-case controller design for linear plants subject to unknown disturbances and plant uncertainties.

This second edition features a more streamlined presentation of the results included in the first edition and also contains substantial new material, reflecting new developments in the field since 1991. Among these are the nonlinear theory; connections between H-infinity-optimal control and risk sensitive stochastic control problems; H-infinity filtering for linear and nonlinear systems; and robustness considerations in the presence of regular and singular perturbations. Also included are a rather detailed description of the relationship between frequency-and time-domain approaches to robust controller design, and a complete set of results on the existence of value and characterization of optimal policies in finite- and infinite-horizon LQ differential games.

The authors believe that the theory is now at a stage where it can easily be incorporated into a second-level graduate course in a control curriculum, that would follow a basic course in linear control theory covering LQ and LQG designs.

      Book Description

Sethi and Thompson have provided management science and economics communities with a thoroughly revised edition of their classic text on Optimal Control Theory. Central to the book is its extraordinarily wide range of optimal control theory applications. Chapter 5 covers finance; Chapter 6 considers production and inventory problems; Chapter 7 covers marketing problems; Chapter 9 treats machine maintenance and replacement; Chapter 10 deals with problems of optimal consumption of natural resources (renewable or exhaustible); and Chapter 11 discusses a number of applications of control theory to economics. The book has been successfully used as a professional reference tool and as a graduate course book. Its usefulness lies in its emphasis on building applied models of realistic problems faced in a variety of business management situations.

The new edition has been completely refined with careful attention to the text and graphic material presentation. In Chapter 3, models have been added that use mixed (control and state) constraints, current value formulations, and terminal conditions. Chapter 4 now covers more advanced material on pure state constraints as they relate to mixed constraints. Each of these chapters contains new results that were not available when the first edition was published.

Another important change is the expansion of the material on stochastic optimal control theory, which has become the new Chapter 13. This new chapter provides a brief introduction to stochastic optimal control problems, and it contains formulations of simple stochastic models in production, marketing and finance, and their solutions.

Optimal control methods are used to determine optimal ways to control a dynamic system. The theoretical work in this field serves as a foundation for the book, which the authors have applied to business management problems developed from their research and classroom instruction.

3 out of 5 stars Technical Paper Rollup.......2005-02-08

Book is essentially a compendium of technical papers on specific economics topics subject to the application of Control Theory. The book includes a robust set of useful state equations and associated optimality problem statements, but I would have appreciated a more general discussion of the application of control theory to management science that ties all of the book's subjects together into a single, cohesive framework. The book focuses almost exclusively on the trees rather than the forest. As such, it is best suited as a supplement for graduate-level studies.

5 out of 5 stars An extremely good textbook.......2003-03-27

This is a very good textbook for subjects on optimal controls with management science applications. I have adopted this as a textbook and students love it. Illustrative figures and diagrams are sufficiently provided, and materials are carefully explained.
The use of the commonly available Excel program to solve TPBVPs at the end of Chapter 2 is suitable for the ever increasing demand of "multimedia teaching". I have not seen any other optimal control textbook include such a set of Excel instructions in such a simple and elegant way.
Moreover, the authors made a set of chapter-by-chapter power point files available on the web to supplement the text book for classroom teaching.
I am giving 5 stars to this book anytime.

            Book Description

This book is a supplement for any standard control systems text. It serves to reinforce the learning process for those who are studying introductory aspects of control systems. The authors accomplish this by teaching the use of MATLAB® and its CONTROL SYSTEM TOOLBOX to rapidly solve a wide range of numerical problems. This book also provides the user with opportunities to apply techniques of linear system analysis, which forms the basis for the analysis and design of feedback control systems. This approach frees the user from the laborious calculations required to solve meaningful problems, thus allowing him or her to concentrate on interpreting the analysis and design results. Topical coverage includes both classical control design method and state-space models and design methods. Some specific topics covered are root-locus plots, frequency-response analysis, system performance, proportional-integral-derivative control, and frequency-response design. This updated printing revises the book and code examples (available for downloading from the Brooks/Cole Web site) to MATLAB® V5.
