This is an excellent book for the artist wanting to understand color. It's not a mixing guide though, it's about learning to see and identify the properties of color.

5 out of 5 stars great introduction to color.......2001-03-12

if you are a beginning artist, an aspiring designer or just someone fascinated with color, then this is a great publication to train yourself in the many nuances of color vision.

the format is a small black three-ring binder of 13 white card pages, and 13 small plastic baggies of dull finish color chips, somewhat smaller than postage stamps. each page presents an empty grid of color (light to dark down the page, and dull to brilliant across it) that you must fill in manually by placing each chip in its assigned position. there are no codes or color names printed on the back of the color chips to help you along, but there is an introductory page explaining the basic concepts of hue, chroma (saturation) and value, the three basic attributes of color.

accompanying the binder is a staple bound color primer by joy turner luke. although the production values are pretty modest, this is one of the best overviews of color i have read anywhere, particularly for artists and designers. luke gets into the history of color research, the basics of color vision, the details of color mixing (she has some sobering critical thoughts about the many commerical "artist's color wheels" on the market today), color design and more.

the color chips are fussy to work with; they are delivered unattached to the card pages so that you can sort and rearrange them in various color tests or color demonstrations, but it's easy to mix them up. i found it most convenient to glue them into place, so that they wouldn't get lost and were ready for quick reference. that tedious exercise apart, this is a very instructive introductory resource for young adults and color students of any age.

5 out of 5 stars Great tool for students and professionals.......1999-04-07

This is a great teaching tool for students and professionals. As a student worker for a professor in my Textile and Apparel program at The University of Northern Iowa, I completed the color set and now want one of my own. It helps expand the understanding of hue, chroma, value, and richness

      Book Description

Oriented matroids are a very natural mathematical concept which presents itself in many different guises, and which has connections and applications to many different areas. These include discrete and computational geometry, combinatorics, convexity, topology, algebraic geometry, operations research, computer science and theoretical chemistry. This is the first comprehensive and accessible account of the subject. This book is intended for a diverse audience: graduate students who wish to learn the subject from scratch, researchers in the various fields of application who want to concentrate on certain aspects of the theory, specialists who need a thorough reference work, and others at points in between. A list of exercises and open problems ends each chapter, and the work is rounded off by an up-to-date and exhaustive reference list.

      Book Description

This text offers a clear, efficient exposition of Galois Theory with complete proofs and exercises. Topics include: cubic and quartic formulas; Fundamental Theory of Galois Theory; insolvability of the quintic; Galois's Great Theorem (solvability by radicals of a polynomial is equivalent to solvability of its Galois Group); and computation of Galois groups of cubics and quartics. There are appendices on group theory, ruler-compass constructions, and the early history of Galois Theory. This book provides a concise introduction to Galois Theory suitable for first-year graduate students, either as a text for a course or for study outside the classroom. This new edition has been completely rewritten in an attempt to make proofs clearer by providing more details. The book now begins with a short section on symmetry groups of polygons in the plane, for there is an analogy between polygons and their symmetry groups and polynomials and their Galois groups; this analogy can serve as a guide by helping readers organize the various field theoretic definitions and constructions. The exposition has been reorganized so that the discussion of solvability by radicals now appears later and several new theorems not found in the first edition are included (e.g., Casus Irreducibilis).

4 out of 5 stars A good book for a first date with Artin's version of Galois theory.......2007-07-16

I came to know this book in its first edition and I particularly prefer that one to this second. The contents in this new addition has been expanded a bit, new worked out examples has been added and new details has been given to some proofs, but in my opinion the book has lost some of the lucidity that it claims to have in the preface.

Despite this the book continues being one of the best introduction to Galois theory and I recommend it to anyone pursuing this subject, even abstract algebra itself, for the first time, since it gathers all the elemetary material in a succint form.

But if you really want to get a feeling of the beautiful ideas that ocurred to Galois you must go first to his original writings ("read the Masters" as Edwards recommends), and then come to this book to appreciate the value of the generality of Artin's version of Galois theory in terms of field automorphisms.

      3 out of 5 stars Good Reference.......2003-03-09

This text serves as a good reference, however, it is not necessarily well-suited for self-learning. The exercise sets need some revamping.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet and Concise.......2002-07-28

I used this book as my course text book in my Galois Theory course in my undergraduate. It is pretty self-contained, so even if you forget some of Group and Fields Theory, you will still find it very readable. The little book guides to the Great Theorem by Galois (f is solvable by radical if and only if Gal(f/Q) is solvable) by breaking it into many nice sections. A drawback of this book is that some proofs at the end are omitted because they are put as execrises! Also, bear in mind that this book focus in Q and R (rational and real numbers) field only. In any case, I still recommend this book because it is sweet and concise, for which I can read it like a novel!

      4 out of 5 stars Classical "Artin's" Galois theory.......1997-12-08

From the definition of a conmutative ring to the fundamental theorem to solvability of equations by radicals in 65 pages, 80 theorems and 106 exercises. The exposition, wich follows the now classical tradition of "Artin's" Galois theory, is quite efficient, packing much material in a limited number of pages. The greatest asset of this book is its nice selection of topics, focusing on the fundamental theorem of Galois theory and its application to solbability of equations by radicals, but pausing to make excursions to finite fields or to work out explicitly some iluminating examples. The style is no-nonsense, crisp but nop hurried. The final 40 pages consist of appendices discussing group theory, ruler an compass constructions and old-fashioned Galois theory. This latter appendix deserves special mention, since it is not customary for a textbook of this size and scope to include such a detailed sketch of the historical motivations behind the theory it describes. One can only agree with the author when he wonders how such thoughts occurred to Galois in the late 1820's, and be grateful to him for providing his reader with material for an answer.

        Product Description

Galois theory is the culmination of a centuries-long search for a solution to the classical problem of solving algebraic equations by radicals. In this book, Bewersdorff follows the historical development of the theory, emphasizing concrete examples along the way. As a result, many mathematical abstractions are now seen as the natural consequence of particular investigations. Few prerequisites are needed beyond general college mathematics, since the necessary ideas and properties of groups and fields are provided as needed. Results in Galois theory are formulated first in a concrete, elementary way, then in the modern form. Each chapter begins with a simple question that gives the reader an idea of the nature and difficulty of what lies ahead. The applications of the theory to geometric constructions, including the ancient problems of squaring the circle, duplicating the cube, and trisecting an angle, and the construction of regular $n$-gons are also presented. This book is suitable for undergraduates and beginning graduate students.

To learn a Japanese martial art is to learn Zen, and although you can't do so simply by reading a book, it sure does help--especially if that book is The Book of Five Rings. One of Japan's great samurai sword masters penned in decisive, unfaltering terms this certain path to victory, and like Sun Tzu's The Art of War it is applicable not only on the battlefield but also in all forms of competition. Always observant, creating confusion, striking at vulnerabilities--these are some of the basic principles. Going deeper, we find suki, the interval of vulnerability, of indecisiveness, of rest, the briefest but most vital moment to strike. In succinct detail, Miyamoto records ideal postures, blows, and psychological tactics to put the enemy off guard and open the way for attack. Most important of all is Miyamoto's concept of rhythm, how all things are in harmony, and that by working with the rhythm of a situation we can turn it to our advantage with little effort. But like Zen, this requires one task above all else, putting the book down and going out to practice. --Brian Bruya

        Book Description

Here is one of the most insightful texts on the subtle arts of confrontation and victory to emerge from Asian culture. Written not only for martial artists but for leaders in all professions, the book analyzes the process of struggle and mastery over conflict that underlies every level of human interaction. The Book of Five Rings —which has become a well-known classic among American business people, studied for its insights into the Japanese approach to business strategy—was composed in 1643 by the famed duelist and undefeated samurai Miyamoto Musashi. Unlike previous editions of The Book of Five Rings, Thomas Cleary's is an accessible translation, free of jargon, with an introduction that presents the spiritual background of the warrior tradition. Along with Musashi's text, Cleary translates another important Japanese classic on leadership and strategy: The Book of Family Traditions on the Art of War by Yagyu Munenori, which highlights the ethical and spiritual insights of Taoism and Zen as they apply to the way of the warrior.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Classic........2007-06-18

This book is only a translation of the original. You may not find the extensive commentary you seek. While written centuries ago, Miyamoto Musashi, in my judgment, didn't write a book just about how to fight.

Reading this book with an open mind will surprise the reader. Deep thought and reflection will be needed. The areas to which the principles in this book may be applied (such as lessons in leadership and politics) and the success in said application are only limited to the amount of imagination and study put forth by the reader.

It offers a great deal of knowledge for every day life, and even if you never pick up a sword, or raise your fists, you will find his philosophy extends well beyond the realm of martial arts and battle strategy.

To some readers you will not be able to fully grasp all of the concepts and ideas presented after one reading. This book is invaluable and definitely invites repeated readings as new insight is to be found as your understanding deepens. I'm not sure if a single review could do this book justice because each time you re-read this book your thoughts are guaranteed to be provoked and you will definitely walk away each time with a new form of enlightenment and that is my reason for giving it Five stars *****.

        4 out of 5 stars Worthwhile Strategy.......2007-06-10

This is powerful book to read and UTILIZE in your life. While it can easily be taken for face value as a book on physical fighting strategy, it is more than that. One can take many of the thoughts and translate them to a more theoretical use on strategy. For example, a quote speaking of "the gaze" relating to seeing an enemy and their movements: "It is important in strategy to know the enemy's sword and not to be distracted by insignificant movements of his sword". This could easily be translated to business, sports, etc. Just substitute "sword" for the essence of the thought to apply to "business", "army", "team", etc.

The first 3rd of the book is a historical account of events of Musashi's life, and also includes many images of artwork created by Musashi. They are black and white however. The rest of the book is the actual "Book of Five Rings". It consists of 5 "books": ground, water, fire, wind and the void. It is to be noted Musashi after a time found he did not need to follow any particular "Way" and practiced many.

Regarding the layout of the book, I like the footnotes at the bottom of many of the pages which help describe words or thoughts you may not have easily or readily known otherwise.

        ---*** THE BOTTOM LINE ***---

A good book to have, with worthwhile strategy, although, regarding strategy I prefer Sun Tzu's "Art of War".

        5 out of 5 stars Good advice.......2007-01-09

The only good advice I ever got from a book came from this one: "Do nothing which is of no use" (p. 49). The Book of Five Rings has a lot of good advice, but that's the one that speaks most clearly to my condition. The Book of Five Rings must be read as metaphor, because life conditions today are so different from those of medieval Japan. But Mushashi was a wise and powerful thinker, and his ideas apply well beyond battle strategy. He lived integrity: unity and purity of thought, word, and deed, and his rare qualities are always worth studying and emulating.

        5 out of 5 stars A study of conflict.......2006-08-14

This book is great for anyone interested in personal development. It is a guide in focused self-discipline. It is also a guide to successful navigation of conflict.

This translation is the best I've read. It is free of superfluous footnotes and pedantic commentary. The commentary that is included before each chapter is brief and helpful.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT 17th CENTURAY SAMURAI SWORDSMAN'S ADVICE ON STRATEGY.......2006-07-22

Based on my readings, Musashi's motive in writing his Book of Five Rings had been to correct misrepresentations of his views on swordsmanship by his contemporaries. Having become a legend in his own time, Musashi's reputation was being exploited by ambitious rivals claiming to have adopted the master's martial techniques and philosophies. Thus Book of Five Rings was intended by its author to establish his point of view for correcting misconceptions.

Those in America who've been advocating since 1974 to study Book of Five Rings to gain some business advantage over Japanese businessmen are barking up the wrong tree. Musashi's writings are poetic and thought provoking. Indeed, one can even learn something new and ancient about strategy from the master. It is, however, doubtful that Musashi's words can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. So then those in the 1970s who had originally marketed the book as "the alternative to the Harvard MBA" were barking up the wrong tree.

In addition to the charming and useful writings, the original (1974 English translation) Book of Five Rings includes photos of the master swordsman's quite beautiful art work, now residing in Japan in a museum dedicated to Musashi works.

          Book Description

Group rings play a central role in the theory of representations of groups and are very interesting algebraic objects in their own right. In their study, many branches of algebra come to a rich interplay. This book takes the reader from beginning to research level and contains many topics that, so far, were only found in papers published in scientific journals and, whenever possible, offers new proofs of known results. Book Description

Beautifully written and elegantly presented, this book is based on 10 lectures given at the CBMS workshop on spectral graph theory in June 1994 at Fresno State University. Chung's well-written exposition can be likened to a conversation with a good teacher--one who not only gives you the facts, but tells you what is really going on, why it is worth doing, and how it is related to familiar ideas in other areas. The monograph is accessible to the nonexpert who is interested in reading about this evolving area of mathematics.

4 out of 5 stars Elegant and coherent, but a bit dry and unmotivated.......2006-09-08

This book is elegant and accessible, with a coherent presentation, but is a bit dry and unmotivated. The book would benefit from more applications, which should not be hard to find. I felt like Chapter 8 was the high point of the book, with a discussion of random walks, a matrix-tree theorem and invariant field theory.

The researcher who needs an arsenal of technical results in a clear style will find it here; the student who desires some added perspective may come away somewhat dissatisfied.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource to help explain diversity initiative.......1999-04-06

This book provides a great "big-picture" view of what a diversity initiative might involve. The authors address diversity with a perspective that a diversity initiative is more than an education program, and give explanation to some othe systems and processes that must be addressed in order to be successful at integrating diversity into an organization. A big positive is that the authros do not use the race/gender basis for diversity, but expand the definition to include many other characteristics that almost all people can realte to. I highly recommend the book.

2 out of 5 stars Trite, simplistic and not worth the money.......1998-12-12

Managing diversity is a subject that does not lend itself to simplistic, checklist solutions. Yet, that is exactly what the authors provide - a plethora of superficial recipes. Not particularly thoughtful and not at all practical for real-world use.

Real diversity management is far more complicated than this text would suggest!
