A very comprehensive reference.......2007-07-24
This book is basically a collection of monographs, each on a different integral transform (and most by different authors). There are additional sections which are general references, but they are probably redundant to most people who would actually be using this book.
The book is a bit weighted towards Fourier transforms, but I found the Laplace and Hankel transform sections very good also. I also learned a lot about other transforms I didn't know much about (e.g., Mellin and Radon transforms).
This book may be the best reference out there for non-mathematicians regarding integral transforms, especially regarding the lesser-known transforms. There are plenty of other books on Laplace and Fourier transforms, but not so on most of the others.
I liked the worked examples for almost each important property of each transform. For me, that I how I learn these things.
A best seller in mathematics !.......2000-04-15

Book Description
This new edition of a successful textbook for undergraduate students in physics, computer science and electrical engineering describes important contemporary ideas in practical science and information technology at an understandable level, illustrated with worked examples and copious diagrams. The field is covered broadly rather than in depth, and includes references to more extended works on various topics. This new edition is slightly expanded, and includes additional new material in the applications sections.
Download Description
Fourier transform theory is of central importance in a vast range of applications in physical science, engineering, and applied mathematics. This new edition of a successful student text provides a concise introduction to the theory and practice of Fourier transforms, using qualitative arguments wherever possible and avoiding unnecessary mathematics. After a brief description of the basic ideas and theorems, the power of the technique is then illustrated by referring to particular applications in optics, spectroscopy, electronics and telecommunications. The rarely discussed but important field of multi-dimensional Fourier theory is covered, including a description of computer-aided tomography (CAT-scanning). The final chapter discusses digital methods, with particular attention to the fast Fourier transform. Throughout, discussion of these applications is reinforced by the inclusion of worked examples. The book assumes no previous knowledge of the subject, and will be invaluable to students of physics, electrical and electronic engineering, and computer science.

Great.......2007-05-12
Gives a great mathematical breakdown of Wavelets with good references to applications. It easily related the Wavelet transform to the DFT.
Does not review all the sampling methods.......2006-03-02
The data provided is not complete for my application
A five-star book.......2002-03-29
I was appalled at the poor reviews this book has received. It
has been a tremendous help to me as a student and now lecturer
teaching this material at post-graduate level. It is exactly
what the title says - a student guide. It gives a very clear
introduction to the Fourier transform using abundant graphical
examples. Multi-dimensional transforms also get a brief
mention, and the book ends with a simple FFT routine written in
BASIC. Any interested student like myself will find this fun
to play with. Compared with other more expensive, weightier
books apparently written to make the subject as obscure as
possible, James's book is a delightful concise 128 page read. The
reader should gain an intuitive feel for many of the important
properties of the FT which will help greatly before tackling
more in-depth treatments. I think it is much better value for
money than many maths books on offer. Those wishing for the
most complicated explanation of Fourier transforms possible,
with no diagrams, applications or humour could try the book
by G.H.Hardy instead.
Assumes too much from the readers.......2000-11-05
This book consists in brief review of the fourier transform and a few applications. The brief review in the first two chapters is ok Only the essentials are given and the proofs are omitted. The problem starsts with the applications. There are applications to difraction of light to information theory and so on. However too much is assumed from the students with respect to those applications .After reading the chapters the students , i suspect, will ask what they have learned.A little more material explaining what the applications are about would improve the book a lot.It is almost useless in the present form
Not enough detail.......1999-10-28
I was a little disappointed with the book. Wanted a little more details and somemore solved examples. This book only introduces FT. It is a good book for the introductory classes in Physics and engineering, after that it is useless.

Book Description
This textbook describes in detail the various Fourier and Laplace transforms that are used to analyze problems in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. These transforms decompose complicated signals into elementary signals, and are widely used across the spectrum of science and engineering. Applications include electrical and mechanical networks, heat conduction and filters. In contrast with other books, continuous and discrete transforms are given equal coverage.
Customer Reviews:
Not so good........2006-10-12
I got this book a couple years ago even though there were no reviews on it because it was the only book that covered both Fourier and Laplace transforms. The book is dissapointing. It is more like a collection of notes than a text book that flows, explains, or guides. There is almost no formatting; for example, the first time the analysis equation is shown, (the equation that pretty much IS Fourier analysis) they don't even so much as put it in bold. It's just like equation 2.332 tucked in the bottom of the page. Not even a comment on it's importance, meaning or anything. I suppose all the material is in there, but I recommend not getting this book.

Book Description
Recently there has been intense research activity on the subject of wavelet/subband theory and application. Experts in such diverse fields as mathematics, physics, electrical engineering and image processing have provided original and pioneering works and results. But this diversity, while rich and productive, has lead to a sense of fragmentation, especially to those new to the field, and nonspecialists, trying to understand the connections between the different aspects of wavelet and subband theory.
The book is designed to present an understanding of wavelets and their development from a continuous-domain transformation to a frame representation and finally to multiresolution analysis tools such as subband decomposition. The book presents a theoretical understanding of the subject that is intertwined with practical examples and practical applications of wavelets in ultrasonic and biomedical applications. There is special emphasis on applications in communications and compression as well as image processing.
Topics and Features:
* Provides an understanding of the link between continuous wavelet transform, the fast wavelet transform and subband decomposition.
* Algorithms and numerical examples are implemented in Matlab.
* The design of wavelet bases, and how to implement the transform both in hardware and software is discussed in detail.
* Covers the fundamentals and the developments of the links between areas such as time-frequency analysis, digital signal processing, image processing and Fourier and wavelet transform, both continuous and discrete.
Extended mathematical treatment and numerous examples, with particular emphasis to the transition from the continuous domain to multiresolution and subband. The book is an essential text/reference for graduates, researchers, and professionals in electrical engineering, communications engineering and computer engineering. Practitioners and professionals engaged in signal processing, wavelets and Fourier analysis will find the book a useful resource and comprehensive guide.

Book Description
This text is designed for use in a senior undergraduate or graduate level course in Fourier Transforms. This text differs from many other fourier transform books in its emphasis on applications. Bracewell applies mathematical concepts to the physical world throughout this text, equipping students to think about the world and physics in terms of transforms. The pedagogy in this classic text is excellent. The author has included such tools as the pictorial dictionary of transforms and bibliographic references. In addition, there are many excellent problems throughout this book, which are more than mathematical exercises, often requiring students to think in terms of specific situations or asking for educated opinions. To aid students further, discussions of many of the problems can be found at the end of the book.

MUST HAVE.......2007-05-12
If you need a reference on the Fourier Transform. THIS IS IT!!!!!
The best book for Fourier transform.......2003-06-22
When I came to the field of Fourier transform, the book provides me a clear, easy-understanding picture to the field so that I believe any of you can get into the field by use of the book. If you are looking for your first book to Fourier transform, don't waste your time, it is. Even through my life in the research, I depended on it most of the time. It's too great.
Good book on practical, fourier analysis, excellent problems.......2001-05-01
This book is an old classic in fourier analysis - it emphasizes intuitive understanding and uses images a lot to convey information, e.g. the book includes a pictorial dictionary of fourier transforms, and recommends using the method of dragging a strip of paper to get a better understanding of convolutions. The problems are challenging and very interesting, e.g. one problem asks the reader to explain the differences in spectra when reconstructing a signal by linear interpolation vs. sketching a smooth graph between the sample points by hand. (there are also easier problems for to begin with, before one tackles "engineering" questions as the one above) Highly recommended!
excellent on fundamentals.......2000-01-25
If you are looking for thorough explanations with great physical insight - this is the book to get. It is for people who want to know WHY more than HOW. However, If you are looking for how (to implement), I suggest the book "Fast Fourier Transform" by Brigham
unusual and rare symbolism to be an engineering book!!!!!!!!.......1999-09-30
Too confusing...it does not use standard engineering symbols, like for tables, you just need a week to get use to it. For starters...I don't recommend it.

Something every technical profeesional should have.......2003-12-05
An incredibly easy book to read. I found I could go from section to section and extract the knowledge that needed at that time. Sometimes I just pick it up and open it at random and I often get something new out of it. After being exposed to this book you can see how dimensional analysis is something that most of us should be capable of applying to those problems that lend themselves to no other approach. The only reason I gave it 4 and not 5 was because I would have liked to see more financial examples and I don't think amperes should be considered a fundamental unit. One of the best technical books I have bought.

Book Description
Time-Frequency Analysis is a rich source of ideas and applications in modern harmonic analysis. The history of time-frequency analysis dates back to von Neumann, Wigner, and Gabor, who considered the problems in quantum mechanics and in information theory. For many years time-frequency analysis has been pursued only in engineering, but recently, and with the development of wavelet theory, it has emerged as a thriving field of applied mathematics. This book presents the first systematic introduction to time-frequency analysis understood as a central area of applied harmonic analysis, while at the same time honoring its interdisciplinary origins. Important principles are (a) classical Fourier analysis as a tool that is central in modern mathematics, (b) the mathematical structures based on the operations of translation and modulations (i.e. the Heisenberg group), (c) the many forms of the uncertainty principle, and (d) the omnipresence of Gaussian functions, both in the methodology of proofs and in important statements. Topics and Features: * Underlying thread throughout the book is the idea of a joint time-frequency representation and its conflict with the uncertainty principle * Unified and systematic introduction of the mathematical foundations of time-frequency analysis on the basis of classical harmonic analysis to obtain core results. * Emphasis of the interdisciplinary aspects of the subject and its connections to other disciplines within and outside mathematics. * new results in the modern theory of Gabor frames and the quantitative measurement of time-frequency content through the theory of modulation spaces * the role of pseudodifferential operators in time-frequency analysis. Mathematicians, physicists and engineers in signal and image analysis, will find an authoritative, systematic introduction to this active field of modern analysis and applications. Researchers and professionals in wavelets and mathematical signal analysis will also find the book a useful resource.
Customer Reviews:
An Immediate Classic.......2003-02-14
This book is an essential tool for anyone working in
time-frequency analysis. It is so important that I bought
TWO copies - one for home and one for work. Hardly
a day goes by that I do not look into this book for some
gem which clearly explains a difficult topic. This is an
area with a tremendous amount of literature. Some of it
is written in such generality and obscure notation that one
cannot recognize even a familiar theorem in some of these papers.
This book contains all the best and clearest proofs of the
results. It also organizes this subject exceptionally well so
that it all finally ``flows'' the way it should. I could discuss
the book section by section to point out the important
points. But this review would then be as long as the book.
All I can say is that no one should even dream of working in
time-frequency analysis without having this book at their side.
From the moment it hit the shelves it was already the ``classical''
work in the area. And it will be that for a long time to come.
I thank the author for this significant contribution to the
understanding and enjoyment of my professional life.
long awaited mathematical introduction to time-frequency.......2001-03-21
This book fills a long-standing gap in the literature. While Gabor analysis is described on equal footing with wavelets in the early literature on the subject (in the late 80's) the book market on wavelets exploded, while no "serious" (from a mathematician's point of view) introduction to Gabor analysis was available. Maybe the impossibility of having orthonormal Gabor bases was the main reason for this situation (by the Balian-Low theorem). In 13 Chapters the author takes the reader from basic Fourier analysis and fundamental facts concerning the short-time Fourier transform and uncertainty to the foundations of Gabor analysis, i.e. Gabor frames, the structure of the Gabor frame operator, Zak transform methods, the role of the Heisenberg group and to functional analytic results describing the "appropriate" function spaces (so-called modulation spaces), playing here the same role as Besov spaces play with respect to wavelet expansions. Besides summarizing known results and proving things from scratch interesting applications (e.g. to pseudo- differential operators) are provided. The book should be of great interest to mathematicians (e.g. graduate students in analysis) as well as those applied scientist who want to read about the "foundations" of this field without having to consult dozends of original papers. A great book which will have its influence on the teaching of the subject in the years to come.
