A true chemical engineering classic.......2007-08-28
Transport Phenomenon by Bird, Stewart and Lightfoot is one of the most useful chemical engineering textbook ever written. For nearly five decades now, many chemical engineers have lived by what they learned first through this book. The revised edition makes the book current, though 1960 edition is great introduction to the mass, heat and energy and/or momentum transfer problems.
The basis idea of the book is simple: list the equations useful for a system of problems, say in mass transfer; provide set of assumptions used to arrive at those; suggest possible solutions to the differential equations for practical industry conditions; use correlations derived by researchers where real time data is unavailable and lastly, learn how to adapt solutions for different set of conditions. The book attempts to make problem solving into a set of instructions to be followed, and by sticking to the fundamental assumptions and equations allows one to attack a range of problems relevant to fields as diverse as diffusion transport, biochemical processes, condensation problems for atmospheric physics, chemical kinetics, heat conduction, petroleum extraction and flow of fluids relevant to many processing industries.
We often hailed it as the Bible of Chemical Engineering. Every now and then, (nearly a decade after we first read it) I still hear people say: this problem, or something like it, was in BSL, (the acronym awarded to the book after its authors). Be it Transport texts by Deen or Middleman typically used for graduate school courses, or Incompressible Flow by Patton, the recourse to understanding problems first hand through BSL is always rewarding.
The book comes with a number of solved and unsolved problems. There is no short-cut to becoming a good chemical engineer, except by mastering the art and science of attacking problems. By going through the book meticulously right in your first course, (for in most cases, this is the first chemical engineering text encountered), you can ensure that you will do well in your whole education as chemical engineer.
Recommended reference for all chemical engineers.
Reintroducing an old friend in a new suit.......2007-07-22
Most chemical engineers grew up with BSL. For myself, I found out what the graduate students were using. The old red-back version was intimidating. It was hard to use. The calculus was, and is, generally over my head. But... after reading through a few problems, the mathematics seemed familiar, the approach seemed to explain all my questions and the solution was, if not directly applicable, one that I could borrow for a difficult problem.
I remember once working on a product development for Andrew Jergens. My goal was to estimate the production capacity of a stepwise batch process. Others would ultimately use my numbers to estimate the price of the product. I had to get it right! One step involved melting this wax, a synthetic whale wax, over an electric heater. I knew the BTU output but there were several physical constraints. After a few sleepless nights and pawing through the University of Cincinnati library I was stumped. Then, I started looking through BSL.Oui la! There is a problem on de-frosting turkeys ¯ a real life practical application of heat transfer; supposedly, this is how Birdseye came up with the table you see on the outside of turkey wrappings on Thanksgiving.
It did not take me long to see the application. I spent a morning doing lab experiments for my physical properties and the afternoon fitting the measurements to their procedure. The method worked.
The second edition has much better graphics and a good index. The index and table of contents in the first edition made the book unwieldy.
I recently became interested in calculating the heat-up time in a hydrolysis bed. One of the crucial problems was calculating h', the volumetric heat transfer coefficient (BTU/hr-cubic feet-F: h X l). There is an excellent method developed by Shumann in another great book: Kern's "Process Heat Transfer." BSL presents a method for estimating h that can be transformed into h' by:
h' = h X Ac/V, where Ac=cross area; V=volume of bed. With the old version, finding this section of the book was very time consuming. The second edition made it easy.
There is one downside of the 2nd edition. To make it easier to read, the publisher increased its length and width. Unfortunately, as experience has born out, this tends to make a book more prone to shearing along its binding. I intent to wrap this book in heavy plastic to add some reinforcement. I suggest you do likewise.
I will keep you posted as I continue to use this book. I may give my old red-back to some younger engineer ---to knaw on the edges before they ask me for the answer.
Good book, but need solid background to understand.......2006-11-10
Overall this is a good book for learning transport phenomena, however, if you are lacking in some of the fundamentals (fluids, heat, etc) some of the steps in the examples don't make sense. Once you have a grasp on the fundamentals, the book is very useful in breaking down transport problems.
Good boock for class.......2006-11-06
All what we need.
The info is great for university grade solarcship
A must have in ingenering (chemical or biological)
A classic text in a new edition........2006-03-07
Having worn out my original copy, purchased almost 40 year ago,
the new edition includes much new material presented in a clear
and understandable format as well as numerous well chosen problems and examples. An essential reference to all those
interested in transport phenomena.

Book Description
The book is aimed at graduate students, researchers, engineers and physicists involved in fluid computations. An up-to-date account is given of the present state of the art of numerical methods employed in computational fluid dynamics. The underlying numerical principles are treated with a fair amount of detail, using elementary methods. Attention is given to the difficulties arising from geometric complexity of the flow domain. Uniform accuracy for singular perturbation problems is studied, pointing the way to accurate computation of flows at high Reynolds number. Unified methods for compressible and incompressible flows are discussed. A treatment of the shallow-water equations is included. A basic introduction is given to efficient iterative solution methods. Many pointers are given to the current literature, facilitating further study.
Customer Reviews:
good for the experienced.......2002-09-18
hi all,
this book is not appropriate for the beginners to CFD so i don't recommend it for the instructors who are looking for a introduction book. The tensor notation is also not easy to grasp for the not experienced. Besides the language of the book is not clear and not enough to let the reader apply without referring to another book. This is probably because the book has covered a lot of CFD concepts so deep explanation on every item is not provided.
However I would recommend this book for experienced CFD'ers since it covers many concepts and it can be used as a good referring material.

Book Description
This is the second volume of a set of two devoted to the operator approach to linear problems in hydrodynamics (Volume 1: 3-7643-5406-2). It presents functional analytical methods applied to the study of small movements and normal oscillations of hydromechanical systems having cavities filled with either ideal or viscous fluids. The work relies on the authors' and their students' works of the last 30-40 years. The readers are not supposed to be familiar with the methods of functional analysis. The second part of the present volume collects nonself-adjoint problems on small motions and normal oscillations of a viscous fluid filling a bounded region. The book is particularly useful for researchers, engineers and students in fluid mechanics and mathematics interested in operator theoretical methods for the analysis of hydrodynamical problems.
Book Description
Since the publication of "Spectral Methods in Fluid Dynamics", spectral methods, particularly in their multidomain version, have become firmly established as a mainstream tool for scientific and engineering computation. While retaining the tight integration between the theoretical and practical aspects of spectral methods that was the hallmark of the earlier book, Canuto et al. now incorporate the many improvements in the algorithms and the theory of spectral methods that have been made since 1988. The initial treatment Fundamentals in Single Domains discusses the fundamentals of the approximation of solutions to ordinary and partial differential equations on single domains by expansions in smooth, global basis functions. The first half of the book provides the algorithmic details of orthogonal expansions, transform methods, spectral discretization of differential equations plus their boundary conditions, and solution of the discretized equations by direct and iterative methods. The second half furnishes a comprehensive discussion of the mathematical theory of spectral methods on single domains, including approximation theory, stability and convergence, and illustrative applications of the theory to model boundary-value problems. Both the algorithmic and theoretical discussions cover spectral methods on tensor-product domains, triangles and tetrahedra. All chapters are enhanced with material on the Galerkin with numerical integration version of spectral methods. The discussion of direct and iterative solution methods is greatly expanded as are the set of numerical examples that illustrate the key properties of the various types of spectral approximations and the solution algorithms.
A companion book "Evolution to Complex Geometries and Applications to Fluid Dynamics" contains an extensive survey of the essential algorithmic and theoretical aspects of spectral methods for complex geometries and provides detailed discussions of spectral algorithms for fluid dynamics in simple and complex geometries.

Probably the best book on the subject, but a tough slog.......2007-07-25
This book will be of interest to a wide range of scientists and engineers who are studying wave motion in fluids in a variety of terrestrial applications. This book is intended to be a reference for an advanced graduate student or researcher and assumes a considerable amount of background knowledge. I'd say that if you aren't comfortable with most of the material in Landau and Lifschitz (Fluid Mechanics, 2nd ed.), much of this book will be incomprehensible. I only give this four stars for two reasons. First, I found this book to be tough going. My feeling is that Lighthill's style just doesn't suit me so maybe this is a personal, not general, complaint, but I found that he does not explain things well and often obsfuscates key points. Second, I think that the first two chapters (on sound waves and one dimensional waves in fluids) are woefully inadequate. The real meat of this book is in the second two chapters (water waves and internal waves) and definitely worth the price of the book if that is your interest, but the basics of the subject were not tied together well (or clearly) in the first two chapters. This is still an introductory book in some sense (`introductory' to an advanced topic, that is). Finally, be warned that this book deals mostly with terrestrial, subsonic applications (waves in the ocean, blood flow in capallaries, etc.). I approached this book from an astrophysics perspective (i.e. viscous, compressible flows mostly) and found the book less useful.
Note: This is NOT a new edition.......2006-06-17
This is a reissue of Lighthill's original book by the same name. It is simply reissued into the Cambridge Mathematical Library Series. To see the publication documentation page, search the contents of the book using the keyword "published", then select the entry labeled "from Front Matter".
One of the very best books for waves in fluids.......2004-08-02
This book, althought an it's an old one, is a masterpiece.
It covers all one needs to know in order to study wave generation and propagation in fluids. The level of reading is not exactly easy. Ever since the first page, the reader is assumed to have some familiarity with the subject. It MAY appear that it is an introductory book, but it is not. The level of math understanding required to read this book is high. Everything is explained in a coincise form, but sometimes it happens that every line contains a concept, and this will slow down the speed of reading seriously...
Anyway: I like this book, and if you're not a novell, buy it.
All about Waves.......2000-04-27
This book is a kind of a book that is seldom used as a text in universities, but everybody in the fields of math, physics, and engineering, has once read. The most valuable topic in this book would be the theory of aeroacoustics which is developed by the auther. Everything is fundamental, but you can learn a great deal about waves which you cannot from other books. This book is a prerequisite to anyone who wants to talk about waves in fluids.

The Dynamics of Marine Craft: Maneuvering and Seakeeping
ASIN: 0471570346 |
Book Description
Offers an integrated account of the mathematical hypothesis of wave motion in liquids with a free surface, subjected to gravitational and other forces. Uses both potential and linear wave equation theories, together with applications such as the Laplace and Fourier transform methods, conformal mapping and complex variable techniques in general or integral equations, methods employing a Green's function. Coverage includes fundamental hydrodynamics, waves on sloping beaches, problems involving waves in shallow water, the motion of ships and much more.
Book Description
During the past two decades, pseudospectral methods have emerged as successful, and often superior, alternatives to better known computational procedures, such as finite difference and finite element methods of numerical solution, in several key application areas. These areas include computational fluid dynamics, wave motion, and weather forecasting. This book explains how, when and why this pseudospectral approach works. In order to make the subject accessible to students as well as researchers and engineers, the author presents the subject using illustrations, examples, heuristic explanations, and algorithms rather than rigorous theoretical arguments. This book will be of interest to graduate students, scientists, and engineers interested in applying pseudospectral methods to real problems.
Customer Reviews:
This is a guide, not an expository report.......2003-03-01
This book is a wonderful guide to pseudo-spectral techniques which begins its discussion as an extension or more precisely as the limit of finite difference techniques. Unfortunately for anyone who would wish to learn these techniques I would have to recomend another book. However, for someone who already knows these techniques then this book is invaluable. It covers in a clear, mathematical way in which certain pitfalls and problems may be overcome. It does not, however, teach more of the advanced methods that must be used in more complex boundary value problems.
I think that a mathematician will find this book easy reading. I also think that an educated engineer will also have little difficulty following along. I do not recomend this book to anyone who has not taken a course in PDE's as background theory is always more important to application than indiscriminately learning a technique.

Fundamentals of Multiphase Flow
-
Bubbles, Drops, and Particles
ASIN: 0387983805 |
Book Description
This book is an exposition of the derivation and use of equations of motion for two-phase flow, which include bubbly liquids and particle -fluid mixtures. The approach taken derives the equations of motion using ensemble averaging, and compares them with those derived from control volume methods. Closure for dispersed flows is discussed, and some fundamental solutions are given. The work focuses on the fundamental aspects of two-phase flow, and is intended to give the reader a background for understanding the dynamics as well as a system of equations that can be used in predictions of the behavior of dispersed two-phase flows. The exposition in terms of ensemble averaging is new, and combining it with modern continuum mechanics concepts makes this book unique. The book is intended for engineering, mathematics and physics researchers and advanced graduate students working in the field.
Customer Reviews:
Beyond the mundane.......2000-08-30
This is perhaps the very first time multi-fluid modelling was given such a rigous theoretical analysis. It brings what was known as phenomenological and engineering approaches to the level of a scientific subject being operated with mathematical apparatus and opening new windows to examine problems of hyperbolicity, ill-posedness of the model and addressing multi-scale complexity in two-phase flows. It is useful book to have for anyone who want to capture the essence of multiphase flows and attempt to approach it as a scientific matter, either computationally or experimentally.

Book Description
This much-needed monograph presents a systematic, step-by-step approach to the continuum modeling of flow phenomena exhibited within materials endowed with a complex internal microstructure, such as polymers and liquid crystals. By combining the principles of Hamiltonian mechanics with those of irreversible thermodynamics, Antony N. Beris and Brian J. Edwards, renowned authorities on the subject, expertly describe the complex interplay between conservative and dissipative processes. Throughout the book, the authors emphasize the evaluation of the free energy--largely based on ideas from statistical mechanics--and how to fit the values of the phenomenological parameters against those of microscopic models. With Thermodynamics of Flowing Systems in hand, mathematicians, engineers, and physicists involved with the theoretical study of flow behavior in structurally complex media now have a superb, self-contained theoretical framework on which to base their modeling efforts.

Book Description
The book concerns theoretical and numerical aspects of systems of conservation laws, which can be considered as a mathematical model for the flows of inviscid compressible fluids.Five leading specialists in this area give an overview of the recent results, which include: kinetic methods, non-classical shock waves, viscosity and relaxation methods, a-posteriori error estimates, numerical schemes of higher order on unstructured grids in 3-D, preconditioning and symmetrization of the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. This book will prove to be very useful for scientists working in mathematics, computational fluid mechanics, aerodynamics and astrophysics, as well as for graduate students, who want to learn about new developments in this area.
