Variational and Potential Methods for a Class of Linear Hyperbolic Evolutionary Processes (Springer Monographs in Mathematics)
Igor Chudinovich , and Christian Constanda Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1852338881 |
Book Description
The book presents variational methods combined with boundary integral equation techniques in application to a model of dynamic bending of plates with transverse shear deformation. The emphasis is on the rigorous mathematical investigation of the model, which covers a complete study of the well-posedness of a number of initial-boundary value problems, their reduction to time-dependent boundary integral equations by means of suitable potential representations, and the solution of the latter in Sobolev spaces. The analysis, performed in spaces of distributions, is applicable to a wide variety of data with less smoothness than that required in the corresponding classical problems, and is very useful for constructing error estimates in numerical computations. This illustrative model was chosen because of its practical importance and some unusual mathematical features, but the solution technique can easily be adapted to many other hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations arising in continuum mechanics.

Optimal Stopping and Free-Boundary Problems (Lectures in Mathematics. ETH Zürich)
Goran Peskir , and Albert Shiryaev Manufacturer: Birkhäuser Basel ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
Accessories:
ASIN: 3764324198 |
Book Description
The book aims at disclosing a fascinating connection between optimal stopping problems in probability and free-boundary problems in analysis using minimal tools and focusing on key examples.
The general theory of optimal stopping is exposed at the level of basic principles in both discrete and continuous time covering martingale and Markovian methods. Methods of solution explained range from classic ones (such as change of time, change of space, change of measure) to more recent ones (such as local time-space calculus and nonlinear integral equations).
A detailed chapter on stochastic processes is included making the material more accessible to a wider cross-disciplinary audience. The book may be viewed as an ideal compendium for an interested reader who wishes to master stochastic calculus via fundamental examples.
Areas of application where examples are worked out in full detail include financial mathematics, financial engineering, mathematical statistics, and stochastic analysis.
Book Description
From the reviews: These two volumes (III & IV) complete L. Hoermander's treatise on linear partial differential equations. They constitute the most complete and up-to-date account of this subject, by the author who has dominated it and made the most significant contributions in the last decades.....It is a superb book, which must be present in every mathematical library, and an indispensable tool for all - young and old - interested in the theory of partial differential operators. Bull. AMS 16,1 (1987). This treatise is outstanding in every respect and must be counted among the great books in mathematics. It is certainly no easy reading (...) but a careful study is extremely rewarding for its wealth of ideas and techniques and the beauty of presentation. ZBfM 612 (1987)

Linear Integral Equations (Applied Mathematical Sciences)
Rainer Kress Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0387987002 |
Book Description
This book resulted from the author's fascination with the mathematical beauty of integral equations. It is an attempt to combine theory, applications, and numerical methods, and cover each of these fields with the same weight. In order to make the book accessible to mathematicians, physicists, and engineers, the author has made the work as self-contained as possible, by requiring only a solid foundation in differential and integral calculus. The functional analysis which is necessary for an adequate treatment of the theory and the numerical solution of integral equations is developed within the book. Problems are included at the end of each chapter. For the second edition, in addition to corrections and adjustments throughout the text, as well as an updated reference section, new topics have been added.Customer Reviews:
The right place to look........2000-05-23
The subject of integral equations is a natural part of analysis which serves to connect several related topics (complex analysis, harmonic analysis, potential theory, differential equations,...) and to use all the power thus gained to solve important boundary value problems of mathematics and physics.
Everyone interested in mathematical physics should get a thorough training in integral equations, and this book is the right place to start. Using a modern and comprehensive language, the author exposes the most important highlights of the theory, up to the numerical aspect, and puts the reader in the track to current research.
The contents of the book are: Normed spaces, bounded and compact operators, the Riesz theory, dual systems and Fredholm theory, regularizations in dual systems, potential theory, singular integral equations, Sobolev spaces, the heat equation, operator approximations, degenerate kernel approximation, quadrature methods, projection methods, iterative solution and stability, equations of the first kind, Tikhonov regularization, regularization by discretization, inverse scattering theory.
Includes motivation for each topic, excercises for each chapter, and extensive references. Suitable for graduate students and advanced undergraduates with a strong background in real and complex analysis.

Problems in Operator Theory (Graduate Studies in Mathematics, V. 51)
Y. A. Abramovich , and Charalambos D. Aliprantis Manufacturer: American Mathematical Society ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0821821474 |
Book Description
This is one of the few books available in the literature that contains problems devoted entirely to the theory of operators on Banach spaces and Banach lattices. The book contains complete solutions to the more than 600 exercises in the companion volume, An Invitation to Operator Theory, Volume 50 in the AMS series Graduate Studies in Mathematics, also by Abramovich and Aliprantis. The exercises and solutions contained in this volume serve many purposes. First, they provide an opportunity to the readers to test their understanding of the theory. Second, they are used to demonstrate explicitly technical details in the proofs of many results in operator theory, providing the reader with rigorous and complete accounts of such details. Third, the exercises include many well-known results whose proofs are not readily available elsewhere. Finally, the book contains a considerable amount of additional material and further developments. By adding extra material to many exercises, the authors have managed to keep the presentation as self-contained as possible.
The book can be very useful as a supplementary text to graduate courses in operator theory, real analysis, function theory, integration theory, measure theory, and functional analysis. It will also make a nice reference tool for researchers in physics, engineering, economics, and finance.
