Easy book.......2007-03-27
Easiest calculus book ever, wish it had thorough answers in the back of the book.
Not that helpful for trying to teach yourself.......2003-09-21
This book assumes a knowledge that not everyone will have. It has an algebra/pre-calc review section, but the review is very basic (ie what an exponent is). The problems require you to remember about negative exponents and cube roots and whatnot.
The explanation parts are very simple and the problems are much more complex. It's hard to make the connection, and the answers in the back don't explain anything. (Don't buy the solutions manual - it's not any more help.) The answers are also simplified in inconsistent ways, so it's sometimes hard to use even if you have the problem right. Calculus for Dummies was more helpful, and explains a little better. It's still not as in depth as the problems in Brief Calculus, though.
(Sidenote: I'm "trying to teach myself" because my professor is incomprensible and has illegible writing as well.)
Yeah, maybe on the cover.......2002-03-01
I used this book for my high school curiculum and will use the exact same book in my collge calc class. And I have enough experience to say that, although this book seems to be user-friendly, it is by far not. The layout is relatively simple, however is not very in depth. Additionally, this book smashes together several large topics together with very little explanation. This lack of explanation, in turn, makes some of the problems practically impossible due to the fact that you haven't seen any problems like them before. All in all forget this book, and pay attention to your instructor.
Student Friendly Text.......2000-09-07
This is a great book. It helped me pass my business calculus course.

5 STARS!.......2005-09-19
Was shocked by the EXCELLENT QUALITY and EXTREMELY PROMPT DELIVERY of the TEXT!

A bit of disappointment.......2006-08-05
One good thing about this book is that it's a paperback, so it weighs less. Basically, the book is a collection of rules, explanations of how they work and work sheets. "Applied approach" is represented by few problems that try to imitate real life, such as problems with business scenarios, etc.
Overall, it's just another math book that does not stand out in the crowd of other math books on a shelf.

Well written and thoughtful.......2007-05-01
I am a college student taking an Enviromental Science class that uses this text book. All the things you will need or want to know about the Earth's sustainable enviroment and how it shapes our lives is not enough to learn in one semester or quarter, but the author G. Tyler Miller JR. does a great job of condensing a LOT of important information into this text.
One of the great things is that the author invites the students who read his text to send him comments or ask him questions. Miller openly admits in the text that he thinks enviromental science is the most important thing you will learn in your lifetime. It dictates your health; the kind of water you drink and how your food is grown and what is in the air you are breathing right this moment. From how hazardous waste, soil management all the way to the path of sustainability this book has pretty much everything you want to know about the enviromental sciences (albiet condensed). It's even printed on recycled paper.
Has some accuracies..........2007-03-21
Just another text book that promotes evolution as fact rather then (unproven) theory. I personally wouldn't mind a text book including evolution if it were presenting truly and accurately and allowed other theories to be considered rather than promote one theory which any expert would admit there is no hard core proof of at all. No more lies in schools!

Intermediate Algebra.......2005-09-22
I was to start by saying that the seller did specify that this was the instructor's edition of the text and the book was sent timely and in excellent condition. the problem I have is with the book itself. As the teacher's edition it doesn't not meet my needs for the class. The teacher's edition gives the answers but does not break down how they arrived at the solution. Therefore, I have to purchase another textbook.
Thanks
Book Description
In recent years, there has been a great deal of interest and activity in the general area of nonparametric smoothing in statistics. This monograph concentrates on the roughness penalty method and shows how this technique provides a unifying approach to a wide range of smoothing problems. The method allows parametric assumptions to be realized in regression problems, in those approached by generalized linear modelling, and in many other contexts. The emphasis throughout is methodological rather than theoretical, and it concentrates on statistical and computation issues. Real data examples are used to illustrate the various methods and to compare them with standard parametric approaches. Some publicly available software is also discussed. The mathematical treatment is self-contained and depends mainly on simple linear algebra and calculus. This monograph will be useful both as a reference work for research and applied statisticians and as a text for graduate students and other encountering the material for the first time.
Book Description
The focus of Linear Statistical Models: An Applied Approach, Second Editon, is on the conceptual, concrete, and applied aspects of model building, data analysis, and interpretaion. Without sacrificing depth and breadth of coverage, Bruce L. Bowerman and Richard T. O'Connell's clear and concise explanantions make the material accessible even to those with limited statistical experience.

a good introductory book.......2000-08-26
I think this book is a good book for those who learnt some basic ideas of statistics, and who wish to improve their understanding in the applied field of statistics. To start this book, some calculus and linear algebra knowledge (one term each is enough)is a prerequisite. This book starts easily, but it'll come to very deep concepts without your noticing it at all.

Book Description
This volume presents a comprehensive introduction into rigorous geometrical dynamics of complex systems of various natures. By "complex systems", in this book are meant high-dimensional nonlinear systems, which can be (but not necessarily are) adaptive. This monograph proposes a unified geometrical approach to dynamics of complex systems of various kinds: engineering, physical, biophysical, psychophysical, sociophysical, econophysical, etc. As their names suggest, all these multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems have something in common: the underlying physics. Using sophisticated machinery composed of differential geometry, topology and path integrals, this book proposes a unified approach to complex dynamics – of predictive power much greater than the currently popular "soft-science" approach to complex systems. The main objective of this book is to show that high-dimensional nonlinear systems in "real life" can be modeled and analyzed using rigorous mathematics, which enables their complete predictability and controllability, as if they were linear systems. The book has two chapters and an appendix. The first chapter develops the geometrical machinery in both an intuitive and rigorous manner. The second chapter applies this geometrical machinery to a number of examples of complex systems, including mechanical, physical, control, biomechanical, robotic, neurodynamical and psycho-social-economical systems. The appendix gives all the necessary background for comprehensive reading of this book.
Book Description
An applied and concise treatment of statistical regression techniques for business students and professionals who have little or no background in calculus
Regression analysis is an invaluable statistical methodology in business settings and is vital to model the relationship between a response variable and one or more predictor variables, as well as the prediction of a response value given values of the predictors. In view of the inherent uncertainty of business processes, such as the volatility of consumer spending and the presence of market uncertainty, business professionals use regression analysis to make informed decisions. Applied Regression Modeling: A Business Approach offers a practical, workable introduction to regression analysis for upper-level undergraduate business students, MBA students, and business managers, including auditors, financial analysts, retailers, economists, production managers, and professionals in manufacturing firms.
The book's overall approach is strongly based on an abundant use of illustrations and graphics and uses major statistical software packages, including SPSS(r), Minitab(r), SAS(r), and R/S-PLUS(r). Detailed instructions for use of these packages, as well as for Microsoft Office Excel(r), are provided, although Excel does not have a built-in capability to carry out all the techniques discussed.
Applied Regression Modeling: A Business Approach offers special user features, including:
* A companion Web site with all the datasets used in the book, classroom presentation slides for instructors, additional problems and ideas for organizing class time around the material in the book, and supplementary instructions for popular statistical software packages. An Instructor's Solutions Manual is also available.
* A generous selection of problems-many requiring computer work-in each chapter with fullyworked-out solutions
* Two real-life dataset applications used repeatedly in examples throughout the book to familiarize the reader with these applications and the techniques they illustrate
* A chapter containing two extended case studies to show the direct applicability of the material
* A chapter on modeling extensions illustrating more advanced regression techniques through the use of real-life examples and covering topics not normally seen in a textbook of this nature
* More than 100 figures to aid understanding of the material
Applied Regression Modeling: A Business Approach fully prepares professionals and students to apply statistical methods in their decision-making, using primarily regression analysis and modeling. To help readers understand, analyze, and interpret business data and make informed decisions in uncertain settings, many of the examples and problems use real-life data with a business focus, such as production costs, sales figures, stock prices, economic indicators, and salaries. A calculus background is not required to understand and apply the methods in the book.
Book Description
Medical decision making has evolved in recent years, as more complex problems are being faced and addressed based on increasingly large amounts of data. In parallel, advances in computing have led to a host of new and powerful statistical tools to support decision making. Simulation-based Bayesian methods are especially promising, as they provide a unified framework for data collection, inference, and decision making. In addition, these methods are simple to interpret, and can help to address the most pressing practical and ethical concerns arising in medical decision making.
- Provides an overview of the necessary methodological background, including Bayesian inference, Monte Carlo simulation, and utility theory.
- Driven by three real applications, presented as extensively detailed case studies.
- Case studies include simplified versions of the analysis, to approach complex modelling in stages.
- Features coverage of meta-analysis, decision analysis, and comprehensive decision modeling.
- Accessible to readers with only a basic statistical knowledge.
Primarily aimed at students and practitioners of biostatistics, the book will also appeal to those working in statistics, medical informatics, evidence-based medicine, health economics, health services research, and health policy.
