Book Description
This book has been thoroughly revised and updated to reflect developments since the third edition, with an emphasis on structural mechanics. Coverage is up-to-date without making the treatment highly specialized and mathematically difficult. Basic theory is clearly explained to the reader, while advanced techniques are left to thousands of references available, which are cited in the text.
Customer Reviews:
Great.......2007-08-26
It explains the the hard concepts in a nice way. But the material covers the great extent of FEA.
It is good for reference.
Murat Surucu
Another student prospective.......2007-05-30
The comments left are interesting in that all the people teaching from it find it useful, and all the students find it frustrating...there is a trend here!
I agree that the explanations are great in detail and the content practical, but at a graduate level with minimal support from the professor and no TA available, not having examples or solutions (to the odds or evens at the very least) is infuriating. After spending close to $100 for this text, I had to go out to buy another with some problems to make it through my course. Two stars for readability, will pile the other three onto the review for my other text.
If a professor recommends this book for his course, my suggestion would be to go talk to some fellow students who have already taken the course to be sure you know what you are signing up for!
A collection of papers at best.......2006-06-16
I am a graduate student of solid mechanics and I have read quite a few books on FEA. Of all the textbooks I have read-this is clearly the worst. The authors don't spend any time to make the material coherent and organized. They seem to have published this book just for the sake of establishing their names in the field. It is basically a collection of research papers on the subject. The worst part of the book is that the authors use excessive verbiage to describe extremely inportant concepts with little or no mathematics. This leaves the readers confused and disoriented. This book is not for those looking for an introductory text and is useless to even those experienced in the field. Avoid this book.
Not an undergraduage text.......2006-05-16
This book was used to 'introduce' us to finite element analysis. To say the least, the book is very hard to follow. For an undergraduate text book, I don't recommend it at all. The problems are very difficult and assume you have a lot of knowledge on other subjects. Also there are close to no examples. This would be a great book for graduate classes or those seriously interested in the theory, but not for the intro introductory class, unless you have a super great professor. Because of my bad experience with the book, and how I found it difficult to grasp, I give it only two stars.
In need of a solutions manual.......2004-10-12
The material in this book is great, but I think the problems are difficult. I am in need of a solutions manual. Please contact me at jjoseph86@hotmail.com if you know where I can get one.

Book Description
Nonlinear Finite Elements for Continua and Structures Ted Belytschko, Wing Kam Liu, Brian Moran Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois This book provides a comprehensive description of the major methodologies of nonlinear finite element analysis for solid mechanics, as applied to continua and structures. Treatment of the subject is integrated in such a way that the reader can gain an understanding of the fundamental methods, a feeling for the comparative usefulness of different approaches and an appreciation of the difficulties inherent in nonlinear analysis. In-depth coverage of the following is given:
* Lagrangian and arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian treatments of continua
* many of the material laws used in today's software and research
* solution methods, including explicit and implicit time integration methods and methods for equilibrium problems
* basic concepts such as stability and smoothness, and techniques such as linearization and regularization
* methods for shells and structures
* contact-impact problems
* element technology, including multi-field elements
Ideal for self-study, no other book provides such a comprehensive description of nonlinear finite element analysis for solid mechanics. This is an invaluable reference not only for final year undergraduates, postgraduates, academics and engineers working on sophisticated finite element software and in the field of solid mechanics, but also for all users of nonlinear finite element programs.
Customer Reviews:
Simply the best there is.......2006-06-16
This book is simply the best nonlinear FEA book out there. While most other books stop at the Total and Updated Legrangian formulations, this book goes way beyond that and teaches you some really advanced FEA techniques. The treatment of material is thourough and meticulous. Unlike what some other reviewers have said, this book is NOT a bunch of research papers thrown together, but is very well organized with consistent notation and timely explanations. This book is ideal for self study as well as reference for scientists and engineers. However, watch out for some typos that may throw you off-track. This is the only complaint I have about the book.
A good reference, but need further revision.......2004-10-15
The approach taken by this book is neither too mathematical, which makes the subject untractable, nor too engineering-lized, which missed out important insights. I am an engineer with a master degree in mechanical engineering. I found this book very readable, given enough coffine and a good mood. The subjects covered are self-contained.
However this book needs further improvement to be called classic. First, contact-impact chapter is palely presented. LS-DYNA theory manual provides a more complete description on this subject. Secondly, typos need to be reduced. Thirdly, the language is somewhat boring. Fourthly, I would like to see a Latex-ized version of this book.
The new gold standard.......2004-06-02
This has got to be the best book out there now on how to construct nonlinear FE. For me, the book was worth it even if just for the lucent review of nonlinear continuum mechanics.
Distinguished.......2003-04-15
By systematic way of intuition, the authors successfully grasp the philosophy of nonlinear phenomena. The methods of explanation in TL, UL, and ALE are obviously pronounced. If the books of Prof. Zienkiewicz and Prof.Taylor, Prof.Bathe are treasures of FEM, this book is worth in that place.
Outstanding!.......2002-11-26
Though I had been somehow prepared by the positive comments of the other reviewers before buying this book, I must admit that I was impressed from the very beginning of study. Non linear FE is a "hard" subject, however the authors proceed in the most systematic and comprehensive way, addressing the most important aspects of non linear fem analysis in a single volume. The book contains everything you need from the field of Continuum Mechanics and is ideal for self - study. Valuable references, handy summary boxes and exercises at the end of each chapter are included.

Customer Reviews:
Worthless - too bad no Zero Stars........2007-06-15
Worthless. My class used Reddy's latest FEA book, and the teacher was pretty good with his supplemental notes - meaning they went well with Reddy's book. This book is outdated. I couldn't use to help with any of the hw problems. My advice is to "Search Inside", look at it with Google Books, or better yet find one at a bookstore somewhere and compare to your class text before buying. I've used a few Schaum's before and this is by far the worst (least helpful).
Study Aid.......2007-02-06
The whole Schuams series is an excellent way to refresh your various math skills, and is also a good introduction to any new concepts.
Good Elementary Book.......2006-03-21
It is a good primer book for the newby in Finite Element Analysis. It has good and clear simple examples
Schaum's on FEA Needs to be Updated.......2006-03-21
Schaum's Outline on Finite Element Analysis was a valuable and important source at the time it was first published in 1995. However, in the intervening 11 years, this field has advanced rapidly, and the material in Professor Buchanan's otherwise excellent outline is now seriously dated.
The outline is still useful for some purposes, but anyone who is looking for a brief introduction and overview of FEA as it is done today will be disappointed or even misled if they depend only on this outline.
On the other hand, the outline does provide a number of useful supplementary problems that may help students who are learning to employ modern FEA software and need to build their understanding of the fundamental ideas behind these methods.
Don't waste your money with other books.......2002-12-14
Don't waste your money buying those hardcover books on Finite Element Method. If you wanna learn this subject soon this is the right book. Beside it you should study the book "An Introduction to Finite Element Method" by J. N. Reddy.

Book Description
From theory and fundamentals to the latest advances in computational and experimental modal analysis, this is the definitive, updated reference on structural dynamics.
This edition updates Professor Craig's classic introduction to structural dynamics, which has been an invaluable resource for practicing engineers and a textbook for undergraduate and graduate courses in vibrations and/or structural dynamics. Along with comprehensive coverage of structural dynamics fundamentals, finite-element-based computational methods, and dynamic testing methods, this Second Edition includes new and expanded coverage of computational methods, as well as introductions to more advanced topics, including experimental modal analysis and "active structures." With a systematic approach, it presents solution techniques that apply to various engineering disciplines. It discusses single degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems, multiple degrees-of-freedom (MDOF) systems, and continuous systems in depth; and includes numeric evaluation of modes and frequency of MDOF systems; direct integration methods for dynamic response of SDOF systems and MDOF systems; and component mode synthesis.
Numerous illustrative examples help engineers apply the techniques and methods to challenges they face in the real world. MATLAB(r) is extensively used throughout the book, and many of the .m-files are made available on the book's Web site. Fundamentals of Structural Dynamics, Second Edition is an indispensable reference and "refresher course" for engineering professionals; and a textbook for seniors or graduate students in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, engineering mechanics, or aerospace engineering.

Book Description
Non-linear Finite Element Analysis of Solids and Structures Volume 2: Advanced Topics M. A. Crisfield Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London, UK In such fields as aeronautical, civil, mechanical and structural engineering, non-linear analysis techniques are becoming widely used for the solution of practical engineering problems. Taking an engineering rather than a mathematical bias, this comprehensive book builds on the fundamental ideas explained in Volume One, introducing the reader to more detailed, advanced topics. Large strains and large rotations, plasticity with a range of yield criteria and hardening rules, stability theory and advanced solution procedures including branch-switching techniques, contact and friction, and nonlinear dynamics, are covered in depth. Examples from a non-linear finite element computer program incorporating the advanced solution procedures are included. The computer program is available on the Internet via anonymous ftp, using the URL ftp://ftp.cc.ic.ac.uk/pub/depts/aero/nonlin2/.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Study.......2004-08-05
Crisfield's first and second books are excellent sources for anyone from different disiplines. His success can be attributed to explaining the materials in their simple forms and to his notations that is easy to follow. Starting from 1D nonlinear truss elements to 3D beam-column elements, all concepts are explained in a similar way so once you are into it, it is easy to follow the text. I mostly studied his work on finite rotations, and arc-length algorithms.
Non-linear FEM for mere mortals........2000-07-17
Very elegantly written with excellent notation. Brings the implementaion of things like co-rotational FEM programming within the grasp of people with a mere engineering background. I especially liked the chapter on large rotations.

Book Description
Hybrid Finite Element Method for Stress Analysis of Laminated
Composites presents the development of the partial hybrid finite element method for the stress analysis of laminated composite structures. The authors believe that the partial hybrid finite element method is more efficient than the displacement-based finite element method for the stress analysis of laminated composites. Since there is a great need for accurate and efficient calculation of interlaminar stresses for designs using composites, the partial hybrid finite method does provide one possible solution.
Hybrid Finite Element Method for Stress Analysis of Laminated
Composites is the culmination of the work of three generations of PhD students in the Concordia Center for Composites. Particular points of interest include:
- a new ISO function method and classification of stress modes which allow the systematic determination of stress polynomials
- how the hybrid finite elements and global/local approach allow the stress analysis of laminated composites to be five times more efficient than the displacement finite element method
- a detailed description of three different types of hybrid finite elements for laminated composites.
Hybrid Finite Element Method for Stress Analysis of Laminated
Composites will be of interest to researchers and designers of laminated composites as well as finite element method students and programmers of finite element codes.
