Conceptual Physics, Tenth Edition helps readers connect physics to their everyday experiences and the world around them with additional help on solving more mathematical problems. Hewitt's text is famous for engaging readers with analogies and imagery from real-world situations that build a strong conceptual understanding of physical principles ranging from classical mechanics to modern physics. With this strong foundation, readers are better equipped to understand the equations and formulas of physics, and motivated to explore the thought-provoking exercises and fun projects in each chapter. Included in the package is the workbook.
Mechanics, Properties of Matter, Heat, Sound, Electricity and Magnetism, Light, Atomic and Nuclear Physics, Relativity.
For all readers interested in conceptual physics.

Not conceptual.......2007-09-04
My daughter used this textbook in her HS physics class and I was apalled with how much useless information it contained. Little to no historical information about who, what and when it was discovered and how it brought about changed. Her teacher used the chapter on the conservation of energy to talk about energy conservation, an entirely different subject. I agree with teaching the concepts of physics in HS before diving into the math in college, but there are much better texts available!
Not what they stated.......2007-05-19
Well, they made it seem like this is the paperback version of the hardcover. It is NOT.
This is an EXERCISE BOOK and no such description exists.
Be careful when purchasing. The only version of the book itself is the hardback version costing over a hundred bucks.
Incredible textbook.......2007-02-04
Going into intro physics this semester, my boyfriend (who had aced his physics course no problem) was utterly ready to hold my hand through the ordeal. But a good instructor and this very comprehensible text makes everything quite easy to understand. Highly recommended to anyone wanting a firm grasp of physics.
Very useful book for those who would like to learn physics without equations.......2006-12-30
I used Conceptual Physics by Paul G. Hewitt along with a more technical university-level introductory physics book that had a lot of equations but not much conceptual explanation. I should admit that I was not very fond of physics until I started to read this book. It explained physical concepts in a simple language that was easy to understand. Although it did not cover some of the more complicated physical concept, it did cover enough material so that I could understand most of the physics equations in my other more technical physics book much better. Conceptual Physics was even exciting to read and I usually looked forward to doing so. After finishing this book, because I understood physical concepts much better, I started to read other popular physics books. Conceptual Physics is not intended to be used in a course that requires solving physics problems based on understanding equation. So it should not be used as such unless it is accompanied by another book containing equations. But if you would like to learn conceptual physics without equation, it has a tremendous value.
This book helped me learn to hate physics.......2006-12-11
As a college student forced to endure this book for an entire semester of conceptual physics, I can say with utmost certainty that this book should not be be on any teacher's list of useful text books. I chose physics to fulfill my university math requirement in order to broaden my very basic scientific knowledge, as I had never taken a physics course. However, what I found in this book (which constituted the bulk of my instruction) was a conglomeration of random examples with little cohesion, annoying illustrations that were distracting rather than helpful, badly organized chapters that left me wandering through the pages wondering what had happened, and an index that doesn't include standard items such as "static friction" or "watt". Perhaps most frustrating was the appalling lack of mathematical equations that the student is somehow supposed to magically know by the end of the chapter, when they are necessary to solve the problems. Please, if you are a physics instructor, spare your students the agony of trying to grasp an understanding of your subject through this book.

The Physics Toolbox: A Survival Guide for Introductory Physics
ASIN: 0534997236 |
Book Description
COLLEGE PHYSICS provides students with a clear and logical presentation of the basic concepts and principles of physics. The authors include a broad range of contemporary applications to motivate students understanding of how physics works in the real world. In addition, new pedagogy, reflecting the findings of physics education research, has been added to help students improve their problem solving skills and conceptual understanding. The text's flexible, accessible, and focused presentation, coupled with extraordinary text/media integration through PhysicsNow, gives instructors and students the tools they need to succeed. This text, which covers the standard topics in classical physics and 20th century physics, is divided into six parts. Newtonian mechanics and the physics of fluids (Part I); heat and thermodynamics (Part II); wave motion and sound (Part III); electricity and magnetism (Part IV); properties of light and the field of geometric and wave optics (Part V); and an introduction to special relativity, quantum physics, and atomic and nuclear physics (Part VI).
Customer Reviews:
Horrible textbook.......2007-07-27
This book is a terrible, terrible waste of a textbook. The authors spend quite a bit of time talking about absolutely nothing in the book. They oftentimes show examples that are very trite and obvious for anyone to do, but then assign much harder problems. I was very annoyed that they never even bothered to do a complete Kirchoff's rules circuit problem. They emphasize absolutely NO conceptual understanding of the material. I can cite no redeeming qualities of the book except perhaps for decent diagrams.
This is written as a graduate physicist; I am no stranger to difficult physics problems. The problems jump from stupidly easy to difficult in a way that is hard for first years, and I sympathize with their difficulty with this book.
HELP!!!!!!!.......2007-01-11
I am in a beginner physics class this semester and this book is the required text. So far it is like trying to read Greek. I am a relatively good student with the ability to figure out problems but no matter the wording used or the examples given, this book is just plain confusing. The problems at the end of the chapters are rediculously hard and don't seem to be covered in the least little bit within the chapter. The author's attempt at explaining the Pythagorean Theorem was even confusing, shouldn't that be one of the easier ideas? I think I'm in big trouble!!!!!
Books like this are the reason people abandon physics!.......2006-09-24
I am by no means incompetent, as I am an honors student and have no problem getting strait A's in calculus, linear algebra and object oriented programming, but this book is abysmal and almost impossible to follow. The book is horrible on so many levels. First off, many of the chapters start off throwing equations at you, and offer no clarity as to the purpose of the equation. The text very poorly explains concepts and the problems given throughout the book are even worse. The problems given during the chapters literally throw information out at you that was'nt ever touch upon in the entire chapter, and to make matters worse, i've counted 4 problems that have incorrect solutions, and thats only chapter 2! This is a very poorly written, even worse explained book. I dont mind sadistically difficult problems at the end of a chapter, if the book did a good job of teaching me the concepts and computations to answer the problem, unfortunately this book does neither. Whats funny is that our teacher started the semester by saying, he does'nt like the book, but were using it while he researches a better book for us to use. Sadly, I could have walked into a book store, and grabbed ANY physics book, and it would have been better then this one. Luckily I have several other physics books that peice together the missing information for me, but for a textbook that students depend on to learn the subject, it should'nt be required.
horrible text- worst text I've ever had to buy.......2006-09-18
I am a chemistry teacher and I am taking a college physics course as a review for an exam. The text has problems worked out but they are difficult to follow, and the problems at the end of the chapter are entirely impossible. It seems one person wrote the text and a different person wrote the end of text questions and another wrote the solutions. I am using other texts to help but unfortunately my teacher requires me to solve problems from this text. May God bless everyone who has to use this text. Teachers, professors, please rethink using this text.
Sloppy.......2006-08-15
I am not at all impressed with the 7th ed. I am now using another textbook instead of the the College Physics 7th ed required for my class.
The text itself if so-so. The text explanations of concepts are unclear and unnecessarily wordy, not the worst out there but certainly nothing to scream about. One of the irritating tendencies was that simple explanations of even basic concepts were few and far between, and often hidden in the middle of muddy piles of minor trivia. But these are not my major gripes.
What I really dont like: The makings of the text are simply sloppy. Questions covering ideas not mentioned in the book, incorrect answers, or improperly-referenced answers abound. The pages are crammed with so much visual clutter it's hard to find important points. The solutions manual only covers 20% of the questions! Nearly every other textbook covers all odd-numbered, sometimes even ALL of them! Yet this one still costs just as much. You have to submit personal information just to access the "free" website, which doesnt have that much anyways.
For crying out loud, the guy wrote this edition had to come on here to give the ratings for the book a boost! And one other 5-star rater was almost certainly someone from the book's publisher or team. Read through the ratings, you will see which one I mean.

Good book for personal library........2007-01-05
I purchased this book for my personal library, and I was not disappointed by how the material in the book presents math in an enjoyable way.
Excellent Teaching Vehicle.......2006-02-01
Not having paid much attention in school (60 yrs ago) and learning computer programming dicated the need for a refresher course in basic mathematics. The author's approach to teaching is to demonstrate the problem and its various solutions and then provide numerous (up to 60 or more problems for the student to work. Answers are provided only for the odd-numbered review exercises. Chapter tests and cumulative review exercises have answers to all the problems. The text is written in clear language that is easily understandable. As with all endeavors effort is needed on the part of the student. The title is somewhat misleading in that I view this book as a "review" or "refersher" course in basic math not as an introduction to college mathematics which I assumed to be on a much higher plane. At the present I am a third of the way through the book and enjoy it. I highly recommend this book for someone who needs to catch up on their abc's of math. Unlike a lot of books this one has plenty of the hands-on approach to doing math. If you need to learn numbers, this is the place to start.
I hate math but I love this book!.......2005-11-29
at the ripe old age of 45, I had to retake math and for somebody whose math skills aren't above fourth grade, I dreaded the idea. This book made things easy for me. The only reason I do not give it 5 stars is that the algebra section was severely lacking but one math book cannot cover everything. I even used this book in my allied health math class and that book for that class STANK. I resorted back to this book many times as a refresher. My professor for the allied health math class would explain a long, drawn-out version of how to find an answer and a simple shortcut was supplied in this book. I would have the answer before the professor was even half way done with HIS method! I can't imagine ever giving up this book.
Basic College Mathematics.......2005-09-27
I was terribly disappointed as the text received is the instructors edition with all answers noted within the text. As a student of course this text was not what I thought I was purchasing. It was too late to return the text as the semester was in session at the time the text was purchased. I will definitely not use this service again as there will questions as to what I will receive and there is no time for returning and reordering text. Thanx for asking
The best Basic College Mathematics book.......2005-09-10
The book is really easy to read and follow directions.
I like the exercise reviews after each class and the test at the end of each chapter it is very helpful.
I really recomend this book.

Great review book.......2007-09-26
The book was delivered on time, in great condition. This is a great review book for the AP BIO exam. It has very concise review information, followed by sample miltiple choices questions. It reviews each of the 12 required labs, also followed by review questions. Finally, it provides 2 sample tests for students to take and practice for the exam.
Not so hot.......2007-09-09
I used this book as a review for tests in my AP Biology class last year and found it to be somewhat lacking. I thought that it would be a good choice to read this when I didn't have time to read the Campbell textbook. BUT when I did do this, the tests covered WAY more. The Cliffs notes seem to just skim the top layer.
Also, I found the graphics to be extremely rough. I'm a visual learner and the diagrams were just convoluted and messy.
While there are several organized charts (i.e. hormonal glands), I would reccomend the student study quide for Biology. This is made by the makers of the Campbell textbook. Each chapter--each section--is outlined for you so that you can review the key topics.
Nicely Organized.......2007-09-08
This is the most thorough out of all the AP Biology study guides and I really liked the way it is organized. It has both multiple choice and essay questions at the end of each chapter. This is the best AP study guide for biology.
The ONLY AP Bio book you need.......2007-08-10
This book is great. I received a 5 on my AP test, and trust me, my teacher sucks. Phillip Pack offers concise, informative explanations that serve as good preview and review tools for your coursework. I recommend using this as a SUPPLEMENT, as sometimes it does not go into too much detail.
I swear my teacher reads this. Sometimes the lectures are so similar to the same chapter it's obvious.
Purchase this book.......2007-08-07
I found reading this book and answering its questions while covering the material in class to be incredibly helpful. The content is thorough, and it covered several topics that were never discussed in my class (which happened to turn up on the exam). Most importantly, this book is easy and entertaining to read. Buy it at the beginning of the year and let it guide you through your tests and quizzes as well as the exam. I owe my 5 to this book.

Book Description
Built from the ground up on our new understanding of how students learn physics, Randall Knight's introductory university physics textbook leads readers to a deeper understanding of the concepts and more proficient problem-solving skills. This authoritative text provides effective learning strategies and in-depth instruction to better guide readers around the misconceptions and preconceptions they often bring to the course. The superior problem-solving pedagogy of Physics for Scientists and Engineers uses a detailed, methodical approach that sequentially builds skills and confidence for tackling more complex problems. Knight combines rigorous quantitative coverage with a descriptive, inductive approach that leads to a deeper student understanding of the core concepts. Pictorial, graphical, algebraic, and descriptive representations for each concept are skillfully combined to provide a resource that students with different learning styles can readily grasp.
A comprehensive, integrated approach introducing key topics of physics, including Newton's Laws, Conservation Laws, Newtonian Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Wave and Optics, Electricity and Magnetism, and Modern Physics.
For college instructors, students, or anyone with an interest in physics.
Customer Reviews:
Not very useful at all..........2007-08-16
I only bought this book because I needed it for one of my college courses along with a key code for the online homework annoyance called Mastering Physics. I found the online site and this book to be completely worthless, having already studied Electricity and Magnetism with a different textbook and found this one to be much worse in comparison on many levels. The examples, the problems, the way they present concepts...all either generic or pointless or possible flawed in some way.
If you have a choice in the matter, get a different one. Possibly Feynman's Lectures on Physics.
For those who want to UNDERSTAND.......2007-03-27
I read about half of the E&M chapters (E&M tending to be more difficult conceptually than Mechanics) and Knight was incredibly lucid in its explanations. Where Halliday/Resnick left me completely confused and unsatisfied with their random assertions about Gauss' Law, Knight built it up step by step, carefully explaining each, leaving me with a very deep understanding of the concepts. I aced that test.
If you want a bunch of plug and chug formulas and nothing else, look elsewhere. But if you actually have the capacity and the desire to understand, this book will do you loads of good.
awesome.......2007-02-25
the book came in perfect condition and with everything it was described with. fast shipping
The book is easy to understand........2006-07-13
I am a computer science student (well, recent graduate), and am looking to sell similiar books. I used both this book and the Fundamentals of Physics by Halliday/Resnick/Walker. Frankly, I thought this book was very easy to understand (much more than Halliday/Resnick/Walker). I'm not sure how you could want to be a mechanical engineer but not do well with this book. I thought they made it very easy to understand and perhaps spent too much time re-explaining what was covered in a earlier chapters but you can easily skip those parts. A slightly more challenging book was the one by Halliday/Resnick/Walker because it relied more on calculus (at least my professor did) but it too was fairly obvious. I recommend either book.
Knight's Physics Volume 1-4.......2006-06-29
My first two semesters were devoted to going through Knight's Physis's program course. The course is an attempt to provide the answer to the question: "How do you provide a physics education to a class body of 240+ students." Comparatively the textbooks were considered to be average. I would agree with the other reviewers that they tended to be "wordy" and the conceptual explanations were lacking. Many authors stress that learning physics can only be accomplished by working problems. A lot of the example problems lacked a clear explanation. I had a routine habit of referring to Serway Physics (3rd. Edition) to get a better understanding of the problems. The twice a week "online" problem assignments were extremely tedious and much of the time was devoted to the frustrations of inputing answers on the website's graphical user interface. I provided responses to many problems and never received a word from Knight's online program representatives. I felt that a lot of valuable learning time was wasted with incorrect alphanumeric symbolic input. Students always had complaints about the connection between the online problems and tests.

Book Description
Every year more than 230,000 high school students take a SAT Subject Test in Mathematics. The Official SAT Subject Tests in Mathematics Levels 1 2 Study Guide is the only source of official questions and answer explanations for these exams, and it is the only guide developed by the test maker. In addition to two full-length, previously administered practice tests for each exam level, this book also contains complete solutions, answer explanations, and test-taking strategies.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent .......2007-03-25
I think the study guide will be very beneficial to me. I believe I chose the right book...
Disappointing.......2007-01-16
Unfortunately, this book only has two practice tests. It is really tough to adequately prepare for this exam with so few problems. I recommend Barron's book instead.
Not very useful.......2007-01-12
Not very useful if you want to study for maths level 1/2.only useful for part time end moment practice but not worth its money.
Great Book!.......2007-01-10
It wasn't good for review, but really good because it has two OFFCIAL math IIC tests. I used Barron's for review and used both of these practice tests (answers and explanations in the back) to score a 790 on the real exam.
Pretty Good.......2006-12-25
The new Math Level 1 and 2 Book is not too bad. However, it is overpriced. This book is the same price as the SAT book with all the Subjects. Just because it has the answers explained does not mean it should be this expensive. I recommend buying from Amazon, since they significantly lower the price by about 30%.
I took the Level 2, so I do not know what the Level 1 was like. In actuality it only has one test for each; the second one they give is in the old SAT Subject Tests book (the one that's Red, white and blue).
This is a good supplement to Barron's. I took Math Level 2 the first time in October for a score of 720, then retook it in December and got 800 with this book and Barron's.

prolific problem sets.......2005-01-09
In his latest update of this text, Sullivan takes the reader through a high school or undergraduate level course in algebra. Though the title says "College", all of this material is also eminently do-able at the high school level, for advanced students, aspiring to major in maths or science. While at the university level, it appears to be targeting those students not majoring in maths, physical science or engineering.
Why? Because the dividing line is calculus. The book gives a good treatment of what you should know in maths, up to, but not including, calculus. It also has a chapter on probability. Which I don't think is usually considered part of algebra. But, pragmatically and correctly, Sullivan chose to include it.
The text has numerous examples, with only a little emphasis on a strict derivation of theorems. Another indication that it does not target a maths major. Sullivan gives informal explanations that should suffice to satisfy most readers.
Each chapter also has a prolific number of problems; around one hundred. Very suitable and convenient for a lecturer [you?] to assign as homework, since the book only supplies answers to half of these. Enough to keep your students happily [?] busy.

Decent at best........1999-01-06
The book is decent. But is not a great text book. It's highlihgted formulas, etc... are very helpful, but it doesn't seem to explain a lot of things in a way to make them easily understandable. I have used many different math books, and I would not use this one unless you are teaaching extremely bright students.

Customer Reviews:
An awful algebra book.......2007-07-09
For the price, you would expect a textbook that goes over algebra in enough detail to instil the student with confidence and the ability to work with algebra with ease.
Unfortuntaely this is not the case. The textbook does a terrible job explaining concepts, with many not included at all. The book contained a lot of questions, but the type of questions for which one should be able to answer in college algebra are unrelated to the text examples because they are a different type of question.
The organization of the book is horrendous, as it is filled with tidbits of information throughout, going offtopic throughout.
I cannot recommend this book at all, as it just adds to the stress of a math course. Please consider other options if you want to spend your time learning and not frustrated trying to decipher the book.
If you are wanting an easy time with college algebra, I strongly suggest Barron's Algebra The Easy Way and Idiot's Guide To Algebra
Very detailed and helpful.......2006-06-15
This book was very helpful and detailed. I did my algebra class online so I didn't have a teacher right infront of me when I had a question. Luckily, because of this books' specifity and detailed explinations, I was able to answer my own question and not have to go through the lengthy process of e-mailing back and forth with my teacher to get an answer.
